Spanish Ebola-Infected Nurse Is First Case Of Contagion Out Of Africa; Salzburg Activates Ebola Emergency Response

Tyler Durden's picture

By now it should be clear to everyone that any myth that the Ebola epidemic, which has clearly gone global, is contained is about as real as the S&P 500 at 2000. And if it isn't, the latest confirmation came moments ago from BBC which reports that a Spanish nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Madrid has contracted the virus herself in the first case of contagion outside Africa, health officials say.  What is different about this case is that the nurse contracted the virus in Madrid while she was part of the team that treated Spanish priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, who died of Ebola on 25 September, despite being treated with the same drug regiment that previous is said to have worked on US Ebola patients.

The priest died in the hospital Carlos III de Madrid after catching Ebola in Sierra Leone. He was the second: another Spanish priest, Miguel Pajares, died in August after contracting the virus in Liberia.

The nurse was admitted to hospital on Monday morning with a high fever, Spanish newspaper El Pais said.  Doctors isolated the emergency treatment room, the report said.

Once again questions emerge just how the virus is transmitted, because if the nurse, who obviously took every possible precation against the world's most dangerous virus that is supposedly non-airborne, contracted it, then it clearly leads to speculation that Ebola may be transmitted by means other than what the population is being told.

And while the media will surely try to downplay the seriousness of this latest contagtion, it will likely fail:

  • SPANISH HEALTH OFFICIAL SAYS HEALTH WORKER WITH EBOLA STARTED TO FEEL SICK ON SEPT. 30
  • SPAIN MONITORING 30 MED STAFF WHO WORKED WITH EBOLA PATIENT
  • SPAINISH EBOLA PATIENT ENTERED ORIGINAL PATIENT'S ROOM TWICE
  • SPAIN EBOLA PATIENT POSS HAD CONTACT W/OTHERS BEFORE SYMPTOMS

But the punchline:

  • SPANISH HEALTH OFFICIAL SAYS HEALTH WORKER WITH EBOLA WENT ON HOLIDAY THE DAY AFTER SPANISH PRIEST DIED AND HAS BEEN ON HOLIDAY EVER SINCE

Well, good luck finding everyone she interacted with.

And if that wasn't enough, perhaps the safest and sleepiest city in the world, Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg, hours ago activated its emergency Ebola response after a 15 year old refugee from Liberia was exhibiting Ebola-like signs. From German ORF google-translated:

In the Salzburg State Hospital, a 15-year-old from Liberia is examined for the Ebola virus infection. The young man was picked up on Monday night at the Wals. He claimed to have escaped alone.

In the Salzburg Federal Clinics (SALK) Monday had therefore first the existing emergency plan for the handling of a suspected Ebola are capitalized: The young refugee from Liberia had been taken up in a Flachgauer community. Since Liberia is a country affected by Ebola area, the young man was admitted immediately for evaluation in the country's hospitals. This was confirmed in the evening Salzburg hospital and health speaker Governor Deputy Governor Christian Stöckl (ÖVP).

And cue panic prevention mode:

"It is absolutely too early to speak of a suspected case. The patient must first be examined for possible symptoms throughout. However, the emergency plan has been activated as a precaution in the Salzburg Regional Hospital, and the case is treated as a suspected case. It has paid off, that a meticulous contingency plan for the entire country and in the state hospital in an Ebola-Team was established in the fall of last year by the Regional Health Directorate. The probability that there is an Ebola patient in the refugee may be small, but we have taken all measures to be fully prepared. The crisis team has gathered in a short time and will advise the next steps, resulting from the initial examination of the patient, "said Stoeckl.

Finally, all this is happening as America's own Ebola patient, Thomas Duncan, is in deteriorating, critical condition.

The map in WHO's Oct. 3 situation report shows that in many areas, there have been no new infections in the past 21 days, and only in one area was there the introduction of ebola where there had not been cases prevously.  Assuming the data is reasonably accurate, my take away was that it is hopefully starting to wane. That said, if it becomes easier to transmit, all bets are off.

It is not accurate.  They are turning away MOST people at the ebola centers.  WHO has openly stated their official numbers are AT LEAST 2-3 times under reported.

I'll try to find a link but I did hear something on the radio the other day suggesting that people are dying before they can get tested which is causing the number of reported cases to decrease.

The contagion rate is a 2 and the incubation period is less than or no more than 21 days.....

That means that the number of cases double every three weeks or even faster.... and in three weeks, more people will die from the virus than the total number that had it 3 weeks ago.

I live outside Dallas and, I'm not worried about that case... I'll be worried when it gets to Mexico... we won't be able to do contact tracing on illegals so easily.... also with cold and flu season coming and ebola having the same symptoms as the flu... there's a lot more potential for missing cases and contacts than we have now.

Interesting.  My limited understanding is that the cytokines released by those with the disease cause increased permeability of blood vessels and other tissues, resulting in the internal (and then external) hemorrhaging.  Based on reading about wheat's effect on the body (via cytokines), it seems like the mechanism is similar, but far more potent.  In which case, an anti-inflammatory approach might help.  Makes me wonder if the use of steroids, which are effective against some types of sepsis, might help.

Realistically, those McMansions and even old mansions would be impractical. Nobody needs or uses that much space, and the maintenance is nightmarish. A farmhouse with farmland would be much more useful. Who wants to have to be a sodbuster when there are fields already prepared?

On a serious note, we've been developing a lot of places that would have originally been used as farmland for a while now.  The actual mansions (well built for a lot of $$ a few decades ago,) that I'm thinking of are where there is water even without electricity on land that was likely farmed 100 years ago.  Hell, there are still a few farms near them.

But I hear ya on the maintainance.  Besides, where I am, one expects to pay more for a house that is made out of mud;)

A few years ago I bought a book detailing how to build your own home out of cob (like adobe a mixture of sand, clay and straw, but not made into bricks). Here in the north, straw bale construction for insulation in at least some of the walls apparently works better They seem eminently practical, with thick walls that, that because of thermal mass are warm in winter, cool in summer. It doesn't burn and bugs don't eat it. There is something quite attractive about them.

I think the biggest threat to the US is the fear response to a significant albeit relateively small outbreak.   You may not be quite in real danger from ebola yet but if the grocery stores are cleared out and everyone stops going to work... it is not like we have a strong economy or society that can weather that.

This is precsely why they need to be as honest as possible. People panic when they feel they are being lied to and ZH is a microcosm of such sentiments. Ebola was a microbe studied in a secure lab a year ago and now there is talk of an outbreak. I think it will most likely be small, but I am planning for the worst. Yup, build immunity and health before you get sick. Melatonin and Vit C Lots of it. No guranatee you won't get sick, but substantially improves the odds you won't.

I don't think is as much a 'de-population' event as it is fear mongering to sell whatever toxic cocktail they have waiting for fear levels to ramp up. If they're willing to willy pete an entire city they'll stop at nothing.

CDC has lost any credibility it may have had with many people.

"The CDC is lying to the public when it says catching ebola requires "direct contact." It does not. You can catch ebola through indirect contact by coming into contact with the blood, saliva, mucous or other body fluids from an infected patient. This can happen over short distance through airborne aerosols, where the ebola virus hitches a ride on small particles of spit and mucous floating around in the air, for example."

The "official" numbers from West Africa don't confirm that though. Just looking at the pictures of bodies in the streets and overcrowded hospitals, to no hospitals in the bush I would argue the official number of +/- 6600 infected is bogus. Has to be higher already. But if it was airborne, nobody would risk their lives traveling to the region either to help or to report back.

Is it transmitted by an insect maybe?

My beef is with Arrogant DRs.  I hold the medical industry in almost the same disdain as the WS financial industry.  A large part of the reason why US healthcare is so functionally technologically backward is for no other reason than the God Complex DRs and their fear of not being in control or being countermanded.

Whatever their industry gets in the future, they deserve...

1. Plant a tree.

2. Help an old person.

3. Get involved in a community group.

4. Teach children how to read.

5. Promote and embody sustainable living.

6. Meditate and share your insight.

mcsean - you make some good points. However your view of ZH is about as black and white - no middle ground - as the intolerant ZH views you complain about. I've been here 4+ years and the reason I keep coming back and posting is that there are an awful lot of free-thinking, intelligent people here - as well as any ordinary family's share of crazies and misfits. Think of Thanksgiving dinner and the "discussions" around the table - especially between the cynical old farts and the young idealists.

As I said - you have some good points, and I understand the fun in taunting people who have a hair trigger, but if you want to make a lasting contribution, here or anywhere else, don't make the rudimentary mistake of lumping everybody together. Unless you're simply here to cause trouble in which case others have set a very high bar for you, and most of them are long gone.

"don't make the rudimentary mistake of lumping everybody together"

That's a fair point but nevertheless, as a non-american it's hard to stomache some of the garbage that appears here.  I think people around the world want to see America set the standard but when the land of the free has the highest incarcaration rate in the world and drops bombs on children, things are not quite right.

It's nice to get a counter-argument but for me this place seems to have developed a mob mentality.

All the hysteria about ISIS is ludicrous.  It is shocking and terrible but look in the mirror.

From the late Harry Browne, on identity traps.

"In the first trap, you necessarily forfeit your freedom by requiring yourself to live in a stereotyped, predetermined way that doesn’t consider your own desires, feelings, and objectives.

The second trap is more subtle but just as harmful to your freedom. When you expect someone to have the same ideas, attitudes, and feelings you have, you expect him to act in ways that aren’t in keeping with his nature. As a result, you’ll expect and hope that people will do things they're not capable of doing."

Yes, sometimes it does seem that ZH can be a self-reinforcing echo-chamber of negativity.  I usually move through life with gratitude and love, but can't help but notice that in some quadrants, one and one doesn't add up to two.  As a history buff, I think I see parallels to other times and trends that were not net positive for humanity.  If I listen to the "regular" news, the reality that I see and what is projected don't mesh.  At least here, whether I agree with all viewpoints or sentiments, I know that I am not alone in seeing and sensing that some current macro trends are not conducive to the human spirit/condition and what I define as liberty.

A recent email from a dear friend in Michigan who is a RN of many years and extensive experience, including as a surgical nurse:

"This is one of my constant concerns - that hospital staff have a problem asking if the patient has traveled recently. I got caught in that web when I accidently overheard a patient state that she had just returned from China. The admitting nurse didn't bother to be concerned although the patient had a cough. Turned out, she had TB - and we all had to be tested. She had been placed in a semi-private room. Two weeks ago I attended an infection control meeting where not word was said about Ebola. When I present the minutes to the meeting, it's going to be at the top of the list of things to consider."
