CDC Holds 11am ET Press Conference Following Second Ebola Case In US: Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Tom Frieden will provide an update at 11 a.m. ET Sunday on the response to the second case of Ebola in Dallas, the first person-to-persion transmission on US soil. As reported earlier, a health care worker, who cared for Liberian Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, tested positive for the disease, hospital officials announced Sunday. Duncan died on Wednesday. The CDC will conduct confirmatory tests on Sunday and share the results after the patient, who has not been identified, is notified, according to a CDC statement.

Here are the punchlines from CDC's Tom Frieden:

  • "We don't know what happened in the care of the index patient, but there was a breach in the protocol." i.e., the nurse's fault.
  • "Unfortunately, it is possible that in the coming days we will see additional cases of Ebola." i.e., when more Ebola patients are revealed, it will all be contained.

If the video doesn't appear, follow this link to the source.

It is reported that the infected nurse in Spain only entered the Ebola vicitims room twice and for very brief periods.

There are also reports of persons being infected with Ebola and being asymptomatic while still able to transmit the virus to others. There are also persons who are reported able to treat Ebola victims while remaining immune to the virus.

These incidents suggest that individuals may have varying degrees of susceptibilty with something in an individuals biochemistry or prior viral exposures rendering them either relatively immune to the virus or highly suspectible to the virus.

In GunsGerms, and Steel , Jared Diamond argues that Europeans were assisted int their early conquest of the Americas by the fact that Europe was a complete cesspit (crowded living conditions, little of no sanitation) and the Europeans therefore had aquired immunity to a wide range of disease. The native Americans lived in much healthier conditions and their bodies were highly susceptible to the disease strains carried by the early European explorers and they dropped like flies with a near 90% population reduction.

It is possible that this same process is now operating in a similar fashion with regard to Ebola. In the current case Ebola developed in sub-standard conditions in Africa and when it is encountered by persons in the west they have zero acquired immunity and the potential for transmission is high.

---

Anybody know what happened to the homeless man who used the ambulance after Duncan was transported in it? Great disease vector there, one that will transmit through a neglected population until it suddenly bursts into the open.

How long can Ebola remain dormant outside a host?  I mean, will the survivors be able to acquire all the property of the dead and live like kings?  Or will they be forced to burn everything to the ground and live in squalor?  I mean, if this thing takes off then most of us won't need to know the answer to that question, but I thought the answer should be established well in advance because I'll be really pissed off if the survivors have to work their guts out for nothing.

I move quietly, mostly unnoticed through the crowd. I watch my victims entertain themselves with war, it amuses me to see them playing with resources, tanks, jets, puppets, gold, pawns, crackers, blood, assets and guns. I am not evil as the concept of sin eludes me and I don't discriminate against any particular individual. I will not judge on race, religion, status, morality, nationality, intellect or age. I am not on a mission and I don't know my purpose, my only instinct is to multiply and I am the same with everybody. I don't know if I was modified, created or manufactured. I do, however, know my name. Some, they call me Ebola, I prefer my title, Destroyer of Worlds.

My wife, an ER doctor, is 8 weeks out from delivering our second child.  We bought some acerage in the Cumberland Ridge section of middle-TN.  The site has a well, septic, and electricity.  It takes 10+ hours to get to the site from our home in central Florida.  We have a 43' motorcoach filled with 150 gallons of diesel in storage.   The plan was, once panic started to set in, we'd head for the hills with our fully stocked escape capsule.

Something tells me the panic will set in before the first week of Dec.  If that's the case, I'm in a real pickle.   She works at the only level 1 trauma center within 200 miles - so our "first case of Ebola in FL" will probably happen there.

I thought I'd planned for everything, but the baby's due date is really causing a dilemma.

This is getting out of hand, but not that bad, yet.

Can she get some kind of medical thing to let her stop working, for the sake of the baby. Her ankles sure look too swollen to me and I'm sitting all the way over here! ;-)

TU'ed.  Thanks for the hint.  I guess it's better than nothing.  Would be neat to have an email with a link back - but I guess that's a feature request that goes unanswered.

Wife's ankles are actually not as bad this time as with our first (18mo now).  She's a go-getter, and wants to work right up to the due date.  Though, this whole scare has her seriously re-evaluating everything.  I can just see 6 weeks from now, with an Ebola patient in every state, the last place we want to go is to a busy, big hospital.  It doesn't help that our first born spent 11 days in the CVICU not wanting to breathe on his own.  The fear of the second having a similar issue pretty much excludes the idea of delivery outside of a hospital.

Oh well... I have another 8 weeks to come up with some kind of a plan, I suppose..

I have about two months of food stored in the coach.  I've never hunted.  There are packs of wild boar - 50-100 of them, some over 400lbs. - that walk my property in TN.  The locals (if you ever find any) say it's the best meat you've ever tasted.  Gonna head to the local gun range in two weeks with one of my ex-military buddies to load up on some rifles.  Hope to get them before the world learns that the DA won't seek and indictment for Darrin Williams (Ferguson cop).... I expect that to be a possible black-swan event.

Carry a pistol if you go walking in the woods and be READY to shoot them if they come out at you. I'm serious. Look at some of the you tube videos that show how they attack and their tusks do major, major damage.

Good thing about it, just butcher 'em like any ol' hog, put them in the smoke house, and you've got some tasty ham and bacon. g/luck w/new baby!

Take a look at this Vice report from Liberia...http://youtu.be/ANUI4uT3xJI

The reporter is an idiot, but that's not the important part.

I don't see panic or desparation among the Liberians...I see despair.

I think we need to rethink how Americans will react.

Those of us on here are aware of what's going on and may be planning some degree of isolation, but I tend to think most sheeple will go about their lives as if nothing is happening around them. They don't watch/read the news. They just don't have a clue what's going on outside of FB and reality TV.

To be honest, it's not the people I fear.  It's our government, and any strong-handed, knee-jerk reaction they may undertake.  For example, if it gets to the point where hosptials can't accept more patients, I can see the national guard or military being used to isolate states.  Just getting out of FL is a 5 hr drive for us.  I-10 makes a great choke-point.  Getting past Atlanta (CDC) en route to TN would be another.

If that were to happen, I think the only way to avoid it is to get mobile BEFORE it happens.  Hopefully there would be enough clues dropped to make the decision to leave that much easier.

I have enough military and ex-military friends that are privately getting their stuff in place - and they've warned me to do the same.

So if you are a survivor, are you going to stay in your hovel forever?  Or would you like to know when it is safe to move about?  Yes, my original question can sound quite tasteless, but whether you are good or evil, you still need to know the answer.  It's all in the context.  I sacrificed clarity for entertainment value, in this case I lost.  Sorry to those I offended, but good or evil, if you are a survivor then you will want to know the answer.  Can you just wait?  Or do you need to incinerate every city?

They admit their numbers are under estimated. The guys who collect and bury bodies are saying that many are coming in that never went to the hospital because there was no room at the hospital. If they die at home or in the street alone, there is not as great a probablity that their death will be recorded as an ebola death. They have trouble testing the living, never mind testing all the corpses and risking infection to "get accurate stats."

The truth is we don't have accurate numbers, we cannot have accurate numbers.

The math needs a few more months before we do it. Geometric expansion doesn't look as impressive at the macro level early on. It looks the worst when it is already breaking down because the population of unaffected individuals starts to dwindle. I don't know of any credible sources of data on the West African spread. The WHO data shows some positive signs such as regions that had been affected with no new recent cases. But does anyone around here believe that WHO wouldn't fuidge the data when the going gets tough?

Frieden is a scumbag, lying motherfucker - petition to have this piece of shit fired and prosecuted:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/10/12/5236988/cdc-protocol-breach-...

"Frieden tells CBS' "Face the Nation" that all those who treated Duncan are now considered to be potentially exposed. Frieden couldn't give an exact number.

Health care workers treating Duncan were to follow CDC protocol that included wearing protective gear.

Among the things CDC will investigate is how the workers took off that gear — because removing it incorrectly can lead to a contamination."

Oh REALLY? FRIEDEN ALREADY KNOWS/IS CLAIMING THAT THERE WAS A BREACH IN PROTOCOL IN REMOVING PROTECTIVE GEAR, WHICH CAUSED THE NURSE'S INFECTION?

Lying piece of shit. I want to hear the nurse and medical staff completely eviscerate Frieden's ugly, lying face.

We have approximately 160 passengers arriving via air travel from West Africa in the US each day (media reports, NPR and others). Presumably, these persons are coming via Frankfort, Bonn, London, Paris and Brazil, all of which have flights connecting directly to West Africa.

The current 'wisdom' is to screen incoming passengers for fever, and to interview those who have one with a quarantine officer, who then makes a determination as to their status. JFK airport began this procedure yesterday (11 October).
1. No airports are equipped with quarantine facilities for humans, certainly not where biological pathogens are involved.
2. Passengers with a fever are directed, presumably, to a room where they wait for their interview with the q-officer. Since the vast majority of travelers with a fever do NOT have ebola, the worst thing there is that they infect one another with the flu or whatever else they are carrying. HOWEVER, let's assume that the room, at some point, contains one passenger who is carrying ebola. They cough, sneeze, or otherwise expose everyone else in that room to ebola.
3. Because the rest of the people in the room did not originate their travel in West Africa, they are then released to continue their travels. Because they are now potential carriers themselves, they go about exposing everyone else they come into contact with to the disease.
4. 8-21 days later we begin to see cases 'mysteriously' pop up all over the place, and the gig is up.

It is quite clear to me, and to my friends at Homeland Security, that the current plans for dealing with this epidemic are worse than woefully inadequate. They are so ill-conceived as to be criminally negligent at best. The fact is that we have zero plan for dealing with this, and are clearly ignoring the advice of both history and what we have learned so far from experiences in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

In the wake of the bubonic plague in Europe, Asia and Indochina during the years from 1300-1600, there was no viable economy in many places (everyone in many cities was dead), and protocols were put in place which did in fact safeguard the cities and ports where commerce and travel were able to continue.
1. No ship was allowed to come to the quay until it had been searched and its crew examined for signs of 'the pox.'
2. There was, and is, in every port, a holding area used for ALL incoming traffic.
3. Any ship showing signs of the Plague had the choice of leaving or being burned at anchor in the harbor (a bit draconian for today's tender mercies, but you get the point.) NO crew were allowed to disembark. In this way, many ports were able to remain operational and plague-free.

At the end of the day, shutting commercial transportation from West Africa remains the simplest way to begin getting this pandemic under control. At the current rate of expansion, there will be in excess of 8 million cases in a year's time (8000 cases currently doubling every three weeks). Assuming that the rate of West African travelers arriving in the US remains constant at 160 a day (58,400 people per year), and a 1% infection rate, we absorb 584 cases in a year's time, at a variety of places, and from people with a variety of contacts. If 584 people are waiting in rooms at airports, each containing 25 people waiting for their interviews with the q-officer, we are then releasing 14,600 potentially infected people (40 people/day) annually into the interiors of our cities and nation. After that, you can just forget about containment. If the mortality rate stays at 50%, we're talking 185 million corpses in three years, just here. All because some pack of Wall St.-owned idiot politicians didn't want to upset the economy.

In short, the protocols our government has begun using at a handful of airports only do one thing - they absolutely guarantee that we will have a crisis of unprecedented proportions, for which we are not prepared. Don't you think maybe the press corps ought to be raising a bit of stink?

Yes but with all due respect Jared Diamond is a drooling hack whose whole purpose is to curry favour with the elites by rubbishing any notions of European exceptionalism and praising any features of non-European cultures that might conceivably be spun into a form amenable to progressivist prejudices.

Europe had been an open culture, trading with peoples across asia minor, africa and even the far east, for its whole history -- of course it had accumulated diseases from across the whole of the then-known world, and its population had gained (partial) immunities to them by the only means possible, viz. by lots of people dying in the past.

The American indians on the other hand hadn't had any contact with anyone outside north america for thousands of years.

In sum: bigots mourn amerindian deaths from "european" (i.e., world) illnesses, while ignoring the fact that the europeans themselves must have died in similar if not greater numbers, though over a much longer period, in order to acquirew their partial immunities.

The standard position for people in power is to maintain the perception of having control and a plan.

The larger the Org in question, the higher are the odds of the bureaucracy having absorbed people with dubious ability or value.

Most companies and orgs will not reveal their real agenda or real goals until they choose to, lest people front-run them and make their agenda and plans impossible to accomplish. E.g. "There will be no more layoffs". Until there are.

Hedge and plan accordingly.

This seems what we're dealing with.

Duncan first went to the Hospital September 26th, he was contagious then. He returned September 28th, he was still contagious. Just for shits-n-giggles, lets do some maths here. Basic maths. He was contagious prior to the 26th, thats why he went to the hospital, he was contagious on the 28th for sure and he continued to be contagious. Now given the incubation period until contagion, this nurse fell ill well before the incubation period. So, next week should be a good indicator as to how bad this will be. October 16th, 17th, and 18th are the dates that fall within the 21 day period. Seeing a couple cases a week early, isnt a good sign.

Shouldn't there be redundancies and additional personel to provide more layers, so at least 2 or 3 people have to make a mistake for the disease to get out?

I don't know anything about Parker, but I've noted the insane theories people like you came up with for Boston [specifically meaning that the injuries were fake]

I was in Boston.  I know the "truthers" are not only wrong, but can't be bothered talking to any number of treating personnel.  Yes, just my word - but there were hundreds of witnesses to real bloody injuries at some of the best hospitals in the country.

It's either paranoia or an attempt to smear all conspiracy theories.  But the claim as to fake injuries in Boston is not only false - anyone not sure can easily find out.   But they can't be bothered doing anything but assuming fake injuries and accusing everyone who disagrees  of being in on it or a 'disinfo agent.'

Sorry to burst your bubble - you're either overly paranoid, or you're actually deliberately poisoning the well of all "conspiracy" theories and truths.

There were some top-notch EMTs present, that's for sure! Like the one who put "Jeff Bauman" (who was a paraplegic BEFORE BB) in a WHEELCHAIR!!!! Sure, basic first-aid says put the guy who just had his legs blowed off in a wheelchair so that "the cowboy" could, um, er, could what? Wheel him over to an ambulance? Wouldn't they drive the ambulance TO him? And not a drop of blood on the wheelchair nor a trail behind. He must have bled out- but he's still conscious! WOW!!! As for Sandy Hook, where to begin? Birth and Death Certificates are public domain. Take the names of the SH alleged dead and search the CT database. They aren't there. You must not have seen the picture of Gene Rosen (shivers) with a mobile sign behind him which read: ALL VISITORS MUST CHECK IN. Check in? To a school shooting? It was a DRILL!!! On the morning of 9/11/01 air traffic controllers in the US were engaged in a DRILL which simulated hijacked planes being flown into buildings. Can you imagine the confusion when it went live? It doesn't matter how much this program costs, since the trillions are being printed and livestock are the ones that ultimately pay for it. The government's resources are substantially unlimited.

It's impossible to determine what is truth and what is false in every disaster. The government and its media feed on that.
