2nd Ebola Patient's Akron, Ohio Family Home Cordoned Off
Having now identified the 2nd health care worker infected with Ebola as Amber Joy Vinson, and discovered she (against CDC advice) traveled across the nation to her family home in Tallmadge (near Akron, Ohio), we now find out that, as WKYC reports, police have cordoned off the home of her mother and are allowing only limited access to the residential development.
Dallas nurse Amber Joy Vinson spent last weekend in Tallmadge, an Akron suburb, before testing positive for the Ebola virus.
Summit County Public Health officials are still trying to determine who Vinson may have seen and where she went while she was visiting family. A family member has already self-quarantined himself in a Tallmadge home following Vinson's positive test.
Interviews to determine Vinson's whereabouts are expected to take time, said Summit County Public Health Medical Director Margo Erme, and people will be interviewed twice to determine whether or not they were in contact with Vinson.
"We have been in there all day to see if there are additional contacts and to see where those additional contacts may be, and also the nature of those contacts," Erme said.
Quarantine needs will be determined on an individual basis, Erme said.
Health officials learned the Vinson had been in the county at around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Police have taped off a home in Tallmadge they believe belongs to the mother of Ebola patient Amber Vinson.
The home is on Stonegate Trail, in the Stonegate Reserve housing development.
At one point, about seven police cars were outside the home and later, that number went down to three.
Police are only allowing limited access to the development for residents.
Officials say Amber Vinson stayed at a home in Tallmadge #Ebola

That's a vector. Can't have that either.
Vector Victor. I made this up without thinking much about it...so simple. I have read in Africa the cabs and motorcycle seats were spreading the Ebola.
E-Z Ebola Transmission Vector
Warm moist foam (sponge) seat cushion or couch where Ebola virus survives for hours, on a bus, bus station, plane, airport, train, train station, cab, waiting room, hospital, doctor office, restaurant.
Coupled with patient sweating and various liquid emissions (blood, gas, bowel) into the cushion seat. Then next victim sitting in warm cushion in it and touching it and wiping it.
That specific seat is probably 'contagious' for 24 hours or more...the seat and virus kept warm and moist.

People may think you are jesting but buzzards are a real health risk in spreading disease.
A few years ago I read about the Zoroastran "sky burials" in India. They place the deceased on a platform for the carrion eating birds to bury (eat). Not unusual there to find a partly eaten body part on nearby balconies.
How many of us have cats and dogs that regularly leave dead birds and other critters at our doorsteps? Wait until they bring home bits of Ebola flesh.
This has the possibility of getting pretty freaky.
That we know of.
I'm quite sure that there are numerous cases out there that just assume they have the flu, will pop an acetaminophen and go to work the next day.
Yes, but it's VERY hard to catch. Omaba just said so. That's why guys in space suits board aircraft to take your temperature.
Well if I'm destined to get Ebola I just hope it's Ebola Lite and I don't lose too many calories.
They are going to blame everything including housing market Doom on this. What a great timing.
Ebola is the new "snow in winter" excuse
That's a bingo! Right before holiday shopping season
At what point do you decide to go on full lock down with your family? 10 more cases? 25? 100? I suppose it depends on their geographical location, but damn this thing could really get crazy.
Thanks alot Dr. Frieden....
Sometimes lock down is not the best strategy.
Being adaptive to the situation is a much better idea.
It's FrankenSTEEN not Frankenstein.
And that's EYE Gore....not eeegore.
Frieden, another "appointed" dual citizen.
And that's Frau Blucher.
(Horse whinnies in the background.)
You mean he has two passports? His other country had better watch their borders when this guy shows up.
10 in the state, or 1 at my wife's hospital if there are 5 in Phoenix. She trusted me with this decision before we were engaged, and if it gets to our little rural area, we are bugging in. I'll take the hit later....we can live here for at least a year with what is onsite.
'sub-prime' er Ebola is 'well contained'
Why are these brain dead moronic thickos still in charge
Listen Select Zero's.
This is how it's done. "QUARANTINE" the fucking USSA McCustom Homes!
Listen Bangawhore.
When this disease hits India, even Vishnu will be buying a respirator. So, you better check yo'self before you wreck yo'self fool.
No worries. When the disease hits India then the Pakistanis will have the excuse to Nuke India out of existence.
Nuclear Fire is the most efficient way of killing this disease.
And as for those dehumanized, radical, Muslim, psychopathic bastards there could not be a better excuse.
If I were in India I would be digging a Fallout Shelter...or...er....it is just as good as my own grave I guess...as Pakistan does have the preEMPtive Nuclear strike as the primary Military Option.
That will be a Pakistani Cordon Sanitaire. It will ensure that no Ebola goes through the Khyber Pass.
What's the difference between Akron and Liberia?
Not much apparently.
Actually it's much easier to contain this in West Africa than in the USA.
In liberia they take your temperature and interview you before you travel.
"We have been in there all day"
So we can go back out and spread it to all the other people we come in contact with.
Duh.....
This just shows how easily this will NOT be 'contained'...

Obama - mission accomplished - it's not about Iraq
What's the phone number on the sign ??? I'm looking to buy some cheap investment properties.
This is pretty amazing..even the nurses dont know a thing...who you gonna call...now watch one of the police who just shut down the house and block catch it...and its on in Akron
Don't forget the neighbors !
Professionals only know what they've been taught. Health care is maybe the biggest example of that.
A majority of health care workers I know are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.
Kinda like teachers.
How would you like to be one of the people who sat in her seat on the plane's next flight?
it's new normal - no one will tell about this seat to anyone in the plane.
I believe the ISIS JV team could have managed this deal better than what we have witnessed thus far from our 'leaders'. Total comedy of errors.
Is that your hemorrhoid bleeding or are you just Ebola to see me?
Interesting -- about 20 min from my place ...
I recommend checking for blood coming from your anus hourly. Just saying.
Why? What on earth are you doing to it?
Lots of NE Ohioans here. I wish I could hang with you nearby fellow ZHers, instead im in the family room on the computer while the wife watches Dance Moms on DVR. Yeah its true.
I feel your pain. DWTS here.
Ah, but at least you know you're completely safe -- no virus could live through that show.
I was born in the same town and went to the same university.
Not exactly a lightweight.
So, on Monday 10/13 when she traveled back to TX, she was contagious, and I'm sure her family hugged and kissed her when she left to go to the airport or when they dropped her off at the airport.

Interesting study on the reactions of HCWs to a deadly outbreak.

"Just before 9/11, the military and intelligence community simulated a smallpox attack in Oklahoma City and found that 20 percent of doctors and nurses would fail to report to work out of fear of contamination," he said. "Last week, it was airport cleaners at LaGuardia refusing to clean an airplane out of fear of Ebola and walking off the job. If more people become infected with Ebola in the U.S., I think you're going to see an increased number of health care workers who choose to stay home."
Unexpected fear manisfestation = black swan
It won't be just health care workers. Taxi drivers, bus drivers etc. or anyone who has to deal at close quarters with the public will likely call in sick.
Just think what will happen if/when ebola gets into the prison system.
If Katrina is any indication, a bunch of unguarded prisioners locked in a building left to die.
Have to wonder if they'll station guards with rifles outside the complex to keep in escapees. Truly messed up situation.
Or the rat population in NYC.
When they said they had it contained, they meant contained to earth.
It's funny but nearly every time there is some Ebola fuck-up the CDC is an active participant.
CDC does not want flying restricted from West Africa.
CDC monitors Dallas situation and knows nurses have no training, supplies or even normal and customary infectious disease protocols.
- watches nurses treat Patient Zero unprotected and THEN make rounds around hospital.
- watches nurse #1 get sick and nothing.
- nurse #2 runs temperature during voluntary lock-down - asks for vacation - CDC APPROVES!
Now the CDC is chasing after what 1,000+ people with all this airplane travel?
CDC does press conference stating "you can't catch Ebola riding the bus, but infected people should not ride the bus for fear of infecting others?"
The man power to run around and notice and question the contacts with these clusters is going to overwhelm the system BEFORE Ebola hits.
Rumors are they are building a Dallas Ebola containment center already and another in Houston.
The DHS/FEMA guys must be creaming their jeans.
Dallas County Public Health set for big reveal tomorrow?
Another week of this nonsense and it will be clear the CDC WANTS Ebola in America.
Ebola might be Obama's Katrina Legacy.
Who would have guessed government could fuck this up so bad. But let's not forget that Texas Hospital. They took in a full blown Ebola African, and already TWO of his nurses have Ebola. What does that say about management at this hospital? Pathetic level of management talent. I have noticed in my years of work at various jobs, that management on the supervisor level tends to draw the lazy, stupid, arrogant cunts. They shoot for a supervisor job to escape work, and to lord it over others. Maybe 1 out of 10 supervisor people I have ever met meet the level of decent and competent. If the work force is good, they can make up for their shit supervisors, if the workers are bad, then there is no hope. I say this Texas Hospital may have no hope.
Ye Olde Professor's First Law of Levitation:
In a sufficiently large organization, the scum always rises to the top.
Same as the military: Everyone is promoted to their level of incompetence (although the Commander in Chief went way higher than that).
"What does that say about management at this hospital? "
For profit.
I'm not claiming that everything is good at the Texas hospital, but maybe they should be given some slack because Duncan wasn't really straightforward with them about his previous Ebola exposure. He did tell them he had been in West Africa, but he didn't tell them that he had had close physical contact with an ebola victim three hours before her death. If he had told them that, it might have made a big difference in how they treated him.
As it was, the hospital wasn't really expecting ebola and it let nurses treat him for two days without protective gear before the results of his ebola test came back. Of course, they really should have had the nurses in protective gear from day one if they even suspected ebola. But it looks like they only viewed Ebola as a remote possibility.
The other US hospitals knew from day one that an Ebola patient was coming in and were able to prepare accordingly.
"Who would have guessed government could fuck this up so bad. But let's not forget that Texas Hospital. They took in a full blown Ebola African, and already TWO of his nurses have Ebola."
Well, what do you expect? Take one patient infected with a BioSecurity Level 4 pathogen and then treat him in a hospital rated at BioSecurity Level 2 with BioSecurity Level 1 protocols. What did you expect would happen?
dupe
"Who would have guessed government could fuck this up so bad."
This was sarcasm... right?
Jack Burton - I so look forward to your too infrequent posts.
Thought I''d share part of a feedback letter I sent to the local hospital after a 4 day stay there last April. Just anecdotal, but it is an example of the competency of our for-profit healthcare system. (btw; sooooo true about supervisors.)
tl:dr - the nurses were awesome, the doctor was a fucktard. If the E comes here, last place I'm going is a hospital.
"A bit after, I heard that the house "Doctor" had recommended I be discharged that night or Friday morning -I still hadn't seen him yet. Nor had I had any professional consultation on my test results - I was just a suffering body in a bed, going to be discharged, in a hospital that was cutting nursing staff hours because of too many empty beds. Discharged with no test results - not important, I guess.
Dr. Kellen, "My/Our Doctor," finally shuffled in around 1700 Thursday and introduced himself as The Doctor and asked me if I had any questions. I made a mistake, took him at his word, and opened with a question concerning other tests that might be done, while I was there, and they were drawing blood every day, had a lab, etc.
The response surprised me. He jumped on me about asking about a test for Lyme's Disease. I'd not brought it up before with anyone, but it seemed to me, while I was there,... why not? My father, who I'm living with, exposed to the same environmental factors, had tested positive a year before and taken a round of antibiotics for it. To Dr. Kellen, this was blatant evidence of my stupidity, and he had no problem plainly laying it out for me.
"YOU CAN'T CATCH LYME'S DISEASE FROM ANOTHER PERSON!!!"
wtf I read up on it when my father was diagnosed.
"YOU DON'T HAVE LYME'S DISEASE!! IF YOU DID, YOU'D KNOW IT!!
He was rude and insulting, and made no effort to be anything like professional. It was just a question about a test, that I hadn't talked about with anyone else. But now I'm an idiot, for asking about a service his employer might provide. This is "the Doctor", apparently, for the entire facility. The only one I saw outside of the ER, anyways.
<3 those ER Docs. Thanks again.
"YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS OF LYME'S DISEASE!!"
This was a clue. I asked him if he'd read my charts, if he knew why I was even there, lying in a hospital bed. He said no, he hadn't, he'd just scanned the first line for an impression.
The term I'm looking for, as a patient and a customer, is, I think, "Aghast."
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/aghast
I'm being rudely insulted, by an employee, who doesn't even know why I'm in the store, but he apparently has crucial, final say on my healing diagnosis and prognosis.
Yes, "aghast". Horrified and amazed.
A brief picture, if you haven't met Dr. Kellen. He is a tall black man who appears to be in his 80's. But he has the white coat. He doesn't appear able or willing to elevate his neck above 30 degrees to horizontal, so his face is always pointed at the ground. He is not the picture of health, rather infirmity. A poor ambassador for your corporation's services on the visceral level, and a rather terrifying one on the technical level. I suspect he gets minimum wage to wear the coat, and use some degree/cert from the 1940's.. The overall impression I got was a (nasty) Walmart greeter. The only "doctor" in charge of my fate inside your facility.
This is in stark contrast to 2012, when every specialist in the building dog-piled onto my bill, taking turns coming in every day to ask "if I was me," and "How do you feel?" but never answering a question - they showed up on my bill at $120 to $200 per 15 second visit. I heard you got in trouble for that with Medicare, but I never saw it in the paper.
I think your current system is just as ineffective and fraudulent as the old one, but even worse for PR.
Today, Friday 4/18/14 I was ready to be discharged, feeling stronger from the nursing staff's care, the pharmaceuticals chosen for my situation, and the fasting that this hospital's food induces. I was ready to go. Motivated, even.
So Dr. Kellen ambles in about 1100 hrs, says I should be discharged today. I asked if I could get the results from my tests before I left: the X Rays, the CAT scans, the EGD, and the stool cultivation. He says he doesn't know anything about that.
WTF?
"You still haven't read my charts yet, have you?"
"Well, ummmm, welll....No, I haven't."
"I've been here for 4 days, came in here in bad shape, and you don't even know how I got here, is that right? I can be discharged without getting test results? I'd at least like to know if the stool culture showed C. Difficile or any other problem."
(Walmart greeter - just shake their hands in a white coat.)
It was Lyme's Disease all over again.
"YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE THAT TEST!!"
("You idiot, ignorant, asshole!" being heavily implied.)
"Errr, I didn't ask for that test, but it was done, by your staff, and I thought I might see the results, since it's on my bill. Maybe you should look at my charts for once... EH? How the fuck do you know that I don't need that test if you don't know why I'm here?"
So he asked if the EGD tech had come to me to discuss the results from Thursday - nice dodge, no, he hadn't, hmmm strange, he usually does...
So he said he'd look into it,and hobbled out of the room.He spent the next couple hours at my nurse's comp looking at my notes it seemed. He came back in about 1400 with handwritten notes on my test results- he read them to me, and did a workable job explaining them to a 10th grader, and explaining the one prescription, a PPI. But why the abuse? It doesn't need to be that hard, does it? He said a diagnosis and prognosis summary printout couldn't be included in the discharge documents, because of reasons.
He said the med records would be available after maybe months and I could buy them or have them sent to other medical corporations. But no written summary of his hand-written notes could I get with my discharge.
This guy is past due for retirement. Unless,... maybe...you want an ignorant asshole to be the face of your corporate efforts. Endangering customer's lives. WTF. I mean, it's not hard for any patient to spot.
Like I remarked to a staff member,
"This guy is ready for the beach."
"That's a good way of putting it."
Nursing staff is outperforming! but doesn't (can not) make up for rot from the top. "
It is well established that many managers/supervisors rise to their "level of incompetence," and no further. Also many managers/supervisors are promoted based primarily on considerations of loyalty, friendship, ass-kissing, and non-threatening to higher-ups; competence is not a factor.
Hey! Das racis'
Have you ever experienced the feeling of sitting in your chair and farting, then feeling the warmth of it on your balls? I think it helps if you're leaning forward. Just happened to me, not sure if I enjoyed the sensation or not. Also, I'm commando at the moment, so now I probably have shitty balls. Anyway, back to the Ebola stuff...
E-Z Ebola Transmission
Warm moist foam (sponge) seat cushion or couch where Ebola virus survives for hours, on a bus, bus station, plane, airport, train, train station, cab, waiting room, hospital, doctor office, restaurant. Coupled with patient sweating and various liquid emissions (blood, gas, bowel) into the cushion seat. Then next victim sitting in warm cushion in it and touching it and wiping it.
That specific seat is probably 'contagious' for 24 hours or more...the seat and virus kept warm and moist.

You know, I think I did enjoy it a little. Is that bad?
Very good for the Ebola. Not so much the hosts.
Gotta start carrying around large wax paper roll and explaining to everyone why and not to touch any old 1yard-1yard paper sheets.
In a few weeks there will be Ebola soaked paper protector sheets flying around Manhattan streets at night and in Chicago. Don't let the paper (s)hit you in the face.
You mean for when you ride in the peasant wagon? With the public?! Ugh, no way.
Guys, I have developed a 4 point plan on how the CDC can get this thing under control.
First, if they will quarantine the whole da.... OMG! Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the Oscars!!!
Anyway...what were we talking about?
Dancing With the Stars
I thought it was Dance Moms.
You know, they shoudl a have a Really Hot Dance Moms of Dallas TV show. I'd watch that.

Our two children living in a house we purchased them are still going strong attending University of Akron classes. Both computer science majors.
No issues reside, just the same prostitution rings, drug, and home break in's three miles away. Akron is a mini Detroit.
Kids are fine, they have very nice guns.
Amusing. Given it’s a 90% commuter school, and few in the metro area actually live in the city proper since the rubber companies left decades ago (except the ne’er-do-wells you mentioned), AND given housing costs and crime in nearby suburbs are ¼ that of most of the country, you could have set them up in an apt. or house in Stow, Hudson, Silver Lake, etc. and, even leaving a “we’re gone, please come in and take all our stuff” sign on the front door each day, the only thing missing would be their algorithms.
"Akron is a mini Detroit. " Now what have the two cities got in common? (Scratchin' ma haid).
Quarantine Washington D.C. and Goldman Sachs. I paid 122 dollars to take the bus everyday this quarter and there ain't no ebola in this world gonna stop me. Next quarter I do believe I'll be driving by myself. It is a toss up as to which will get me first; the 405 or the ebola. Wish I could use spaceships like back home.
You getting your DOT commuter subsidy Partner?
They are hoping that this will generate a sympathy vote for the Democrats. Bless their hearts; they are trying their best but everything seems to be going wrong!
Typical suburban neighborhood, all the better. I can hear the bleating getting louder and more insistent. Good
Ms. Vinson went to Akron to plan a wedding; I wondered if it had occurred to her that this may be a moot point given that she was well within the incubation period.
It seems planning a possible funeral may have been more apropo given the circumstances? And while this is sad what is more sad is that this young lady was a health care professional, and it never occurred to her that she may be infected and could be a possible vector for transmission?
This selfishness is indicative of our society; young and carefree, me, me, me. We need a vigorous education campaign in w. Africa? It would seem that we need one here as well!
But then again she didn't do anything that Nancy Snyderman didn't do for F-ING take out food! Plan a wedding ever here of a phone, or a computer Jesus! I agree this is going to be a slate wiper.
And permission from the CDC a pseudo government private business, why get permission from this gaggle of morally bankrupt ideologs.
CDC? Should change their name to the CDP Centers for Disease Propagation!
There is no way that this is mere incompetence, even an idiot can figure out that this has to be brought under control NOW!
This woman's state of denial is typical of most people. How many smoke tobacco or use illegal drugs and think it won't affect their health when they know these substances kill thousands every day? How many drink and drive because "accidents happen to other people".
She's just like them: "It will not happen to me because I'm different!"
It would be irresponsible if Ms. Vinson had kept her temperature secret and not called CDC for guidance -- but she did not.
The CDC is the FU here. This is the CDC is trying to scapegoat another nurse because she called the CDC several times and the CDC told her it was OK. The CDC have declared themselves the ultimate authority on Ebola so she got her medical advice from the very top, and they were wrong again.
CDC: "A plane is just a bus in the sky, right?"
She called the CDC and told them she had a fever. They said,it wasn't high enough for concern and told her she could fly. That's not selfish. That's insane.
Once they have got Ebola well and truly started in this country I have to wonder if they will stop the campaign fund raising dinners. Because I can certainly see someone who catches it and is pissed enough to suddenly become a big campaign contributer just to get in the same room as the people that allowed this to happen.
So are they going to have TV camera thermometers on the doors to the campaign dinners and be screening the participants? They better start doing it now.
"... We got them surrounded on all three side of us..."

I owe this nurse an apology for the comments I made earlier on what I believed was her irresponsible behavior. In fact, she did follow the protocols set out for her by those in power who should have known better. She is not to blame here, but she is a victim of the unconscionable idiocy that seems to be rampant in our local, state and feral governments. Let's hope she doesn't pay the ultimate price for trying to help someone with a lethal infectious diease. Close the damned borders. I believe that Southern Command General was not far off the mark when he said that it would likely really get in through our porous southern borders. I'm not a racist, just want to survive, if it comes down to it.
"I owe this nurse an apology..."
You don't owe her anything.
For god's sake man, puzzle it out:

Ebola. Another gift from Africa that just keeps on giving.
It turns out that there is a vaccine against Ebola. Pentagon scientists were developing it for 30 years, and all the rights for the drug belong to the government of the United States. Two infected US medics received injections of the vaccine and they started recovering from the disease immediately. Why has this been made public only now?
Why is it that the USA holds all the rights for the use of the vaccine? There can be two most obvious answers to these questions. As one can see, Ebola is a perfect biological weapon: it spreads quickly and gives nearly 100% mortality rate. Those having the life-saving vaccine can dictate any conditions to others.
The second answer is a purely commercial interest. It is enough to arrange panic with the help of the media, as it was the case with several epidemics before, such as avian flu. Afterwards, it will be possible to sell the life-saving medicine at any price.
However, Russian scientists doubt that the Americans created the medicine indeed. Russian scientists also conducted the research to study the nature of the virus to be able to create the vaccine against it. Soviet scientists, for example, Professor Alexander Butenko, was a member of the joint Soviet-Guinean expedition in 1982 and spent nearly a year in the rain forests of Guinea, when the then unknown virus was discovered.
Strategy of Biological WarfareOn Dec. 10, 1974, the U.S. National Security Council under Henry Kissinger completed a classified 200-page study, “National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests.” The study falsely claimed that population growth in the so-called Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs) was a grave threat to U.S. national security. Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine. Brent Scowcroft, who had by then replaced Kissinger as National Security Adviser (the same post Scowcroft was to hold in the Bush administration), was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, as were the secretaries of state, treasury, defense, and agriculture.
EBOLA Biological Warfare – Is India Prepared ?You've spammed the same shit in half a dozen places in the last few minutes.
What Soviet-Guinean expedition in 1982 discovered the then unknown virus in the rain forests of Guinea?
What two infected US medics received injections some vaccine and they started recovering from ebola immediately?
You're like a Nigerian scammer peddling poorly written doom porn for the gullible.
Ebola virus is so small (0.8-1 um x 0.08 um) that it can be spread even by the smallest droplets produced by a human breathing, talking, coughing, sneezing (smallest respiratory droplets are 5 um or smaller).
In this sense it absolutely is possible to be infected by droplets via air, and in addition the virus stays infectious for upto 90 minutes on surfaces. Anyone denying this is lying.
Lube up, here comes the Congressional probe of the "Response"... or lack there of.
