Second Texas Healthcare Worker Tests Positive For Ebola

Tyler Durden's picture

And then there were three.

As the Texas Department of State Health reported an hour ago, just three days after the shocking announcement that the late Thomas Eric Duncan had managed to infect one nurse in the first person-to-person transmission of Ebola on US ground, a second Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital worker has been infected with the deadly virus.

From the official statement:

Second Health Care Worker Tests Positive for Ebola
News Release
Oct. 15, 2014

A second health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States has tested positive for the disease.

The health care worker reported a fever Tuesday and was immediately isolated at the hospital.

Health officials have interviewed the latest patient to quickly identify any contacts or potential exposures, and those people will be monitored. The type of monitoring depends on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus.

The worker was among those who took care of Thomas Eric Duncan after he was diagnosed with Ebola.

The preliminary Ebola test was run late Tuesday at the state public health laboratory in Austin, and results were received at about midnight.

Confirmatory testing on a separate specimen will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to contaminated objects such as needles. People are not contagious before symptoms such as fever develop.

Surely the CDC's Tom Frieden will say this is perfectly expected: after all the CDC, which promised it would "stop Ebola in its tracks in the US" just two weeks ago, changed its tune and said to expect more cases.

As of this moment, equity futures are not happy, and certainly not transports, which after a seesaw session in which airline stocks rebounded following a deep oversold condition, are about to become even more oversold as the US public responds to increasingly unpleasant Ebola pandemic news by deciding to "just stay home this weekend."

And now we await the CDC to explain how this is all due to another breach in protocol for a disease which still is clearly not airborne.

Knew there was something gravely wrong when they started diverting emergency response from their ER (one of the busiest in Dallas).  Turns out they are now monitoring approx. 70 workers.  Few are talking, not wanting to jeopardize jobs (or healthcare if they actually come down with it).  What a clusterfuck.

Assuming that ebola is not the most massive psy-op ever released (remember, many of us didn't immediately spot 9-11 for what it was), then it's already too late.  The virus had to be stopped in Africa, and instead it was exported intentionally to other continents.  No way it'll be stopped now.  Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

If it is the most massive psy-op ever, however, I believe it will also be the last by the current global elite power structure.  The end is near for them, thus the desperation.  But I often underestimate the power of human stupidity...

Still waiting to see which of the above scenarios makes most sense to me.

Officials from National Nurses United declined to specify how many nurses they had spoken with at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. They said they would not identify the nurses or elaborate on how the nurses learned of the details in their allegations in order to protect them from possible retaliation. The nurses at the hospital are not members of a union, officials said.

Here's a look at some of the allegations the nurses made, according to the union:

Thomas Eric Duncan wasn't immediately isolated.

On the day that Thomas Eric Duncan was admitted to the hospital with possible Ebola symptoms, he was "left for several hours, not in isolation, in an area where other patients were present," union co-president Deborah Burger said.

Up to seven other patients were present in that area, the nurses said, according to the union.

A nursing supervisor faced resistance from hospital authorities when the supervisor demanded that Duncan be moved to an isolation unit, the nurses said, according to the union.

At first, protective gear nurses were wearing while treating Duncan left their necks exposed.

After expressing concerns that their necks were exposed even as they wore protective gear, the nurses were told to wrap their necks with medical tape, the union says.

"They were told to use medical tape and had to use four to five pieces of medical tape wound around their neck. The nurses have expressed a lot of concern about how difficult it is to remove the tape from their neck," Burger said.

At one point during Duncan's care, hazardous waste piled up.

"There was no one to pick up hazardous waste as it piled to the ceiling," Burger said. "They did not have access to proper supplies."

Nurses got no "hands-on" training about using protective gear.

"There was no mandate for nurses to attend training," Burger said, though they did receive an e-mail about a hospital seminar on Ebola.

"This was treated like hundreds of other seminars that were routinely offered to staff," she said.

The nurses "feel unsupported, unprepared, lied to and deserted."

So why did the group of nurses -- the union wouldn't say how many -- contact the nursing union, which they don't belong to?

According to DeMoro, the nurses were upset after authorities appeared to blame nurse Nina Pham, who has contracted Ebola, for not following protocols.

"This nurse was being blamed for not following protocols that did not exist. ... The nurses in that hospital were very angry, and they decided to contact us," DeMoro said.

And they're worried conditions at the hospital "may lead to infection of other nurses and patients," Burger said.

A hospital spokesman did not respond to the specific allegations, but said patient and employee safety is the hospital's top priority.

"We take compliance very seriously. We have numerous measures in place to provide a safe working environment, including mandatory annual training and a 24-7 hotline and other mechanisms that allow for anonymous reporting," hospital spokesman Wendell Watson said. "Our nursing staff is committed to providing quality, compassionate care, as we have always known, and as the world has seen firsthand in recent days. We will continue to review and respond to any concerns raised by our nurses and all employees."

The Dallas mayor declined to comment on the accusations against the hospital.

"I don't comment on anonymous allegations," Mike Rawlings said

Ebola Outbreak Boosts Odds of Mutation Helping It Spread

The Ebola virus circulating in West Africa is already different from previous strains.

While scientists don’t fully understand what the changes mean, some are concerned that alterations in the virus that occur as that pathogen continues to evolve could pose new dangers.

Researchers have identified more than 300 new viral mutations in the latest strain of Ebola, according to research published in the journal Science last month. They are rushing to investigate if this strain of the disease produces higher virus levels -- which could increase its infectiousness.

So far, there is no scientific data to indicate that. The risk, though, is that the longer the epidemic continues, the greater the chance that the virus could change in a way that makes it more transmissible between humans, making it harder to stop, said Charles Chiu, an infectious disease physician who studies Ebola at the University of California at San Francisco.

“If the outbreak continues for a prolonged period of time or it becomes endemic, it may mutate into a form that is more virulent,” said Chiu. “It is really hard to predict.”

Three hundred mutations doesn't sound like a lot, consider that the ebola genetic code only contains around 6000 codons, so nearly 5% of them are likely to be different than previous strains.  Ebola only encodes seven proteins, thus each protein has probably survived multiple successful mutations already.

It was pretty obvious that US hospitals were incompetent before ebola was here, mrsa, TB and the sheer number of deaths attributable to poor sterile procedures back that up.

Massive panic will result unless someone competent is put in charge and puts an end to the madness of allowing ebola into the country.

WHO extends ebola incubation period to 42 Days.

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/ebola/14-october-2014/en/

"Incubation period

The period of 42 days, with active case-finding in place, is twice the maximum incubation period for Ebola virus disease and is considered by WHO as sufficient to generate confidence in a declaration that an Ebola outbreak has ended.

Recent studies conducted in West Africa have demonstrated that 95% of confirmed cases have an incubation period in the range of 1 to 21 days; 98% have an incubation period that falls within the 1 to 42 day interval. WHO is therefore confident that detection of no new cases, with active surveillance in place, throughout this 42-day period means that an Ebola outbreak is indeed over."

It is behond stupid to put ebola patients in a hospital.  They need a special ward or building.  Risking our health care system in this way seems extremely unwise.  Of course if it starts to spread here at exponential rates it won't matter what efforts are devised or made.  Have cash on hand and a shopping list for your self quarantine.

Problem with the conspiracy.

The claim is that elites profit through vaccinations. No vaccination for ebola by big pharma. The simplist and effective way to treat ebola is plasma transfusion from survivors. That is the conspiracy that should be followed. Why isn't this decades old treatment given more attention?

My personal opinion is that the CDC is totally incompetent because it is political as most centralized agencies are.

Also Friedan's BS talking points about containing the disease by allowing free travel, Orwellian double speak.

Freidan posits that preventing travel will spread the disease by limiting the ability of aid workers to enter and leave the country and prevent materials from entering the area as well. Ok presuming that is the truth;

- build a secure facility at the airport with a isolation ward for NGO and other aid workers to quarantine in until the 21 day incubation period is over , cease commercial flights, establish a clean area to store and move supplies into a transition area that is between the clean and contaminated sides those on one side or the other do not breach clean/ dirty protocols, finally control the border. Pretty easy solution and Freidan is an Ivy League ass and can't figure this out?

Also the director of the WHO stated that the traditional means of containing the disease were not working, possibly now airborne transmission of the disease. Also the WHO director had similarly indicated that controlling the border would cause a further spread of the disease and she worried about the negative economic impact that an isolation of the area would have on the global economy.

I will certainly agree that he is a bad actor with a far left political agenda. While he would likely be replaced with another similarly focused jack ass, it would be hard for the regime to maintain their meme that all is well.

More over if Friedan were criminally prosecuted for either criminal negligence or criminal malfeasance it would be a speed bump at the least to those set upon destroying this country.

Playing devils advocate, this EBOLA shit is just too perfectly timedIf I was TPTB, this is exactly how I would implement a controlled demolition on the US economy and collapse of currency. Screw the healthcare system as many of you noted it will collapse. That's just perfect to implement a "revised" - "new-and-improved" - National Obama Kare in the next two years. If you can keep folks from the polls in November as they don't want to be standing in line with an Ebola infested illegal immigrant with voting rights, this all seems pretty obvious to me.  Just send in a small army of African descent voters dressed in traditional garb.   That'll clear the deck for a Democrat Party landslide.   Mission accomplished.

I do agree, or at least I understand what you are saying. It is to run cover for the impending collapse that they can no longer fend off or control with FED printing.

I think that this perspective of yours does establish a scenario in which TPTB could establish martial law, have cover for their economic treason and gain even more control of the public WITH their consent.

"Sorry folks we did not want to do this but the public begged us to do it"

I wouldn't be surprised in this scenario if TPTB blamed the introduction of Ebola into the US on the Russians as well.

Once this gets in the sewer system, rats, bats, etc this is going to be a mess. Congrats go to CDC and POTUS for instigating the first and only ebola outbreak on american soil in humans. By the way they knew this shit from chimps that were brought over in the 60's for medical research, same thing happened, possible transmission by air. That is why medical research chimps were bred here for years instead of imported. If one of these people dies, our potus and CDC just killed a labrat or two, problem is we're the lab rats.

Ebola goes endemic in animal populations, rather like rabies.  Dogs can be carriers without being visibly ill but can spread the virus to humans.  So it is here now, like the hunta virus.  It will naturally mutate to  the environment and hosts.  This is probably the best argument for travel restrictions, which now, sadly has become a mute point.

Meanwhile,  Fukushima is spewing Strontium 90 into the Pacific at 25 million times the EPA's limits.   Strontium 90 causes bone cancers and lukemias. We are also told to move along here, there is nothing to see..........
