Tyler Durden's picture

McDonalds might be a lesson for investors...  As is Exxon...  If mighty companies like THEM get into trouble for political or other BS reasons, what protections would YOU have?

Invest in Russia, bwa ha ha.  Some of the pro-Russian commenters here are not, ahh, confidence inspiring about outsiders placing money there...

There is a whole world out there to invest in.

If say 20 years ago a person(capitalist) invested a thousand dollars in McDonalds stock they would be a millionare today because of government growth inflation policy. A McDonalds "worker" making minimum wage 20 years ago and is still working for McDonalds corporation  is poorer today than he was 20 years ago because of government growth inflation policy.

McDonald's traded at $10/share in 1994.  It's currently trading around $90.  So your $1000 investment would be worth $9000, plus dividends.  Not that this has anything to do with the utter hypocrisy of ZH when it comes to Putin the Great.

Not hard to take your point, which I find pointless.  It really detracts from your message when you get your facts bollixed up:  2014-20= 1994 vesus "80's".  $9,000 or so versus $ miliions.

oh--ok--nevermind. sorry sir IDK maybe there was a point there--hmmm... maybe there is something to this lopsided battle between capital and labor?

I do know that a lot of ZH posters like to adhere to old school Austrians that wrote when labor had the upper hand. I don't know if you have noticed--some people say it is cyclical...but it seems to me that capital(and governments) have had the upper hand for awhile now wouldn't you?

Deflator -- if you've ever read my posts, you will realize I am not anti-labor.   But Putin banning McDonald's is not going to help labor, and it is utterly hypocritical for the anti-government types on ZH to applaud him for doing what they would consider treason against capitalism if anyone in the West did the same.

I didn't invest MY money in Russia!

I saw the 'Big Mac' gap coming DECADES ago!

If I can't stroll down a street in Novosibirsk and duck into a McDonald's and order a Crappy meal and sit down and warm myself and taste the 'Special Sauce' in my Big Mac (whatever 'royale' they like to call it), and slurp on a 33.8 ounce 'Coca-Cola', and dip my oversalted and soggy Idaho 'freedom fries' in a pre-sealed and processed aluminized pouch of Kerry-Heinz Ketchup, while arranging the next 'glasnost disarmarment' by coordinating Summa Corporation employees to work in conjunction with the Sikorsky Design Bureau, then I might as well resign (and take up COSCO on their lucrative offer).

Bejing (or Peking, or Nanking, or whatever) STILL has McDonald's 'restaurants', don't they?

I'd like to know what is the breakdown between company-owned stores and franchisee owned stores that the regulators have acted against. I think there are only a handful of franchise shops since the Rosinter deal was announced in 2012. But if Putin the Great's minions are picking on the local business owners in order to settle scores with a multinational corporate behemoth or the USSA, then they need to be reigned in and redirected.

excellent remark and questions. a further question: do Putin's minions care if they are hitting on a megacompany or on small/medium local franchising business people?

Authoritarian Rule is seldom nice to Small Biz. Top-Down approaches find it much, much easier to find supporting agreements with Big Biz. The very reason for fascist or crony-socialist or crony-capitalistic setups, all three corruptions of conservative, socialist or (classic) liberal setups

My personal litmus test for how authoritarian/corrupt a country is... is actually how Small Biz fares. That simple. The small entrepreneur is the one individual most at risk from politics of corruption, in his business and as individual

The Worker can find some shelter in masses, trade unions, socialist politics. Big Biz can move offshore, can bribe big style, can buy whole media outlets, the works

The Small Business owner? He depends from the two other great forces to set rules that don't choke him

If you miss your McDonalds burgers in Russia, you can buy a 14 year supply today and you are covered:

14-year-old McDonald's hamburger looks almost new

A Utah man says he's hung on to a McDonald's hamburger for 14 years, but even stranger than that --the burger looks almost new.

David Whipple claims that he first bought it in July, 1999 as an experiment to show friends how enzymes work in preserving food, ABC News reported. Whipple kept the burger in the original paper bag from the fast food chain before forgetting about it in his coat’s pocket. Two years later his wife, Beverly, discovered there.

“We looked at it and said, ‘Oh, my gosh.  It’s two years old, it looks like it’s brand new,’” he told ABC.  “I said, ‘I wonder how long this thing is going to last?’”.

They didn't have much time to think about it.  The father of seven says he got caught up with life's other priorities and the burger was placed back in its wrapper and forgotten about again until closer to six years later, around 2006.  After moving house, they discovered it again.

Russians have absolutely no excuse even looking in the direction of this suicidal establishment. This shit is absolutely disgusting, poisonous and debilitating, not to mention that this zombie food is owned by the empire that is encircling Russian lands and would do anything in order to destroy and loot it. I’d rather eat my old sandals then abusing myself with these cancer pumped substances.

Many fast food ingredients come from local vendors. Since the food in Russia is much healthier than in the US, same fries, same burgers, same pretend-beef and vegetable oil will not do as much harm, but it's no excuse to endulge in fast food regardless. Over time these types of establishments begin dictating how the food is grown and processed. If fast food joints become popular, you can be sure, the farms next door will eventually start planting GMO seeds, the cows will move from open fields into concentration-camp barns and everything else will go to shit.

McDonalds is an enabler of certain business practices. It destroys the food industry much like WalMarts destroy self-sustaining small businesses, and much like Stabucks drives every non-Starbucks coffee joint across the street out of business.

If fast food goes away, I won't miss it one bit... but it won't. Not here at least. Russia is still early in its assimilation process, so it has better odds of kicking this relatively fresh habit. I wish them luck.

If Ronald offers you a helping hand, kick him in the balls and walk away.

I had a sausage biscut break fast in the mountains of California yesterday, just remodeled store in high end area. The biscut was hard as rock, the orange juice tasted about 50% more watery than the last time I remember and the sausage patty was 1/4" thick. This was at 8am not like 11am last call breakfast with old stuff. The cost?

$6:50 something

I swear I just laughed. I don't normally eat crap breakfast, but we have been slammed busy and my helper eats 7-11 microwave egg a muffins and they were 300% percent better at 7-11, the two I actually ate last week. The sausage was way bigger and way juicier. I think the food at 7-11 is better and you can buy booze and beer there too.

I make a delicious 'Blini Borodino".

The blini, which are fried, are 50/50 white flour and buckwheat, as not to overwhelm the taste of the Beluga caviar.  Creme fraiche and finely chopped hard cooked eggyoke and onion round out the dish.

I served them at the beanfest we had to celebrate the 200th anniversary of that famous Franco-Russian battle a couple of years ago.

Next time you're in Southern California you must come over and try them.

The Y/Y chart perfectly matches the increased suck factor of McDonalds' food.  The last time I ate a Quarter Pounder after not eating there for two years I thought that it had the texture of sawdust as I took my first bite.  Three days later I learned that it really was sawdust.  I'll never eat there again.  I get better burgers for a whole two more dollars at a local burger joint.

Russia will be better off in the long run.

The problem is, the-powers-that-be will re-write history to show something far from the truth, just like Stalin did.

In fact, they've already started.

Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize after only one month in office. Since then he has bombed at least 8 countries that I can think of, and has boasted about how good he is at killing people (with drones).

This is not strange at all. Russia is using the sanctions as an excuse to go after McD's for healthcode, food quality, and other violations. They can easily state it is to safeguard health - high fat, HFCS, and all that nonsense.

Love them pancakes, wrapped around a slice of ham, mushrooms and cheese...

Yummy...
