Ebola-Handling Healthcare Worker Currently On A Caribbean Cruise Ship

Tyler Durden's picture

It's almost as if the administration is doing everything in its power to spread a panic (come to think of it, when is the last time there was any Ukraine civil war coverage, or ISIS for that matter?).

While one of the big Ebola updates overnight, in addition to Obama being open to appointing an Ebola czar - because clearly the CDC is unable to handle the epidemic, best to have one on top of it all -is that some schools in Ohio and Texas are closed today after students’ potential exposure to a nurse with Ebola furthered fears of the disease spreading, this is nothing compared to the just released revelation that a health care worker who may have handled a specimen from the Liberian man who died from Ebola in Dallas is on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.

Just in case an Ebola-infected nurse traveling coach cross country doesn't do it?

From USA Today:

Industry giant Carnival says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified it late Wednesday that a passenger on the Texas-based Carnival Magic was a lab supervisor at the Dallas hospital where Thomas Eric Duncan died from the disease earlier this month.

Carnival says the unnamed woman has been placed in isolation on the ship and has shown no signs of illness.

"At no point in time has the individual exhibited any symptoms or signs of infection, and it has been 19 days since she was in the lab with the testing samples," Carnival says in a statement sent to USA TODAY. "She is deemed by CDC to be very low risk."

The Carnival Magic is one of the largest cruise ships in the Caribbean with a capacity for more than 4,000 passengers. It sails with more than 1,000 crew members.

Carnival says it in close contact with the CDC, and "at this time it has been determined that the appropriate course of action is to simply keep the guest in isolation on board."

So here's hoping for the best. If, however, the worst case scenario unfolds, here is where the next Ebola hotspots may well be, deep inside Latin America:

The Carnival Magic is on a seven-night cruise to the Western Caribbean that began Oct. 12 in Galveston, Texas. The ship called at the island of Roatan, Honduras on Wednesday and Belize City, Belize on Thursday. It's scheduled to visit Cozumel, Mexico today and return to Galveston on Sunday morning.

Finally we get the Breaking Bad joke:

Belize's 7 News reports the Belize government refused a U.S. request Thursday to let the Dallas health care worker disembark in Belize so she could be flown home by air ambulance from a local airport.

How long until Americans, of which half already announced they would not fly international due to the ongoing Ebola scare, also decide to delay that holiday cruise until next year?

Typical fake Christian:  “Let all malicious bitterness and anger and wrath and screaming and abusive speech be taken away from you along with all badness.”—Ephesians 4:31.

Don't recall Jesus or the 1st century Christians using profanity.

Passenger dies on Nigeria to JFK flight after vomiting.

“The CDC went on the plane, examined the dead body and said the person did not have Ebola,” King said.

“It was what I was told a cursory examination. The Port Authority cops and personnel from Customs and Border Protection were there, and they were told there was no danger because the person did not have Ebola,” King said.

But their concern was, how could you tell so quickly? And what adds to the concern is how wrong the CDC has been over the past few weeks.”

WHO is alarmed by media reports of suspected Ebola cases imported into new countries that are said, by government officials or ministries of health, to be discarded as “negative” within hours after the suspected case enters the country.

Such rapid determination of infection status is impossible, casting grave doubts on some of the official information that is being communicated to the public and the media.

In Pentagon case, person was declared negative based on questioning them only. No test results yet. Heck, were tests even ordered? (Also, a first test can come back as a false negative.)

Pentagon case: no test results, just an "all clear" based on questioning the person.
Takes 48 hours and 2 tests to know. (Per WHO guidelines)

Funny about comparing Ebola to Flue.

What is the death rate of each?  50-70% vs ?%

How many peopple have died with either?

How many people have gotten flue vacinations?

How many people have had reactions to vacinations?

The flu mostly kills the elderly and the weak, kind of like the Plains Indians culling the buffalo herd.  Ebola kills indiscriminately, like the Pioneer hunters shooting all of the buffalo from a train.  The former improves the viability of the herd, while the latter causes its extinction.

Dear Mr. President,

I would like to nominate myself to be the Ebola Czar.

Background: I gave you maximum donations in both your campaigns

Action Plan: Order 300 million aquamarine ribbons to raise awareness, organize fun runs nationwide with proceeds going to help airlift victims who were being monitored back to the locations they were supposed to be, bring all the sick Africans to America for treatment to diminish the impact the disease is having in Africa, send all our Special Forces to Africa and have all americans with fevers this winter quaranteened in Fema camps.

I can' t wait to get started!

Delta D.

Well, no, I think they just believed the USG bullshit and did not do any personal research.

I was lucky to have worked on a certain US military base years ago doing the electrical work on the containment systems.

The scientists had removed all the pathogens so we could work.

One of them told me if Ebola-which I had never heard of- got loose, mankind might be doomed. He said they were working on a antidote.

I am taking the precautions he said one should take if it ever got loose.

Be careful out there, ZH Brothers.

Wheter ebola is really loose in the US or not, we're headed to fewer liberties if any. That is the overall plan. Plus maybe keeping the american spring from coming. Really, if  you wanted to kill a population, now would be the time. Flu season coming right up, quarantine the shit out of millions for "symptoms". Economy crashes, it's not wall street's fault, it's ebolas fault. JIT delivery fails cause all those selfish workers won;t come to work where people are ill with gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea, tis the season). People starve, martial law, refugee camps (FEMA, yeah!) and, most of the country too cold to grow more than brassicas and even then, not for a few months. How many people have enough food stocked until you can start eating kale and peas in May?

Or, of course it could be, look over there, it's ebola! And, the market crashes while you're worrying about shitting blood and dying. Usually when it's this in your face it's something else. They didn't hype 911 but they knew it was Bin Laden's work before even the tower fell. Anthrax in the mail followed by the "patriot" act. Ebola followed by...OTOH, ebola shows up in my community I'm bugging out. I will give one warning shot at first, but if they come too many or it lasts too long no warning shots.

What are they thinking?

A travel ban for return from the major African countries with Ebola should be enacted as soon as possible.

Why has the CDC and the NIH been wasting their budgets on funding fruit and vegetable availability? Emergent viral diseases like ebola and marlburg represent a serous risk to out nation, and there is a clear need for diagnostics and therapeutics.

Why do we not have a simple test strip for Ebola? It should take 10 minutes to get a color reaction, and determine that a person is or is not shedding Ebola virus and is infective. The CDC should have 10 million test strips, this stuff is easy. We would be able to restrict travel based on actual infected persons, not just travel origin, or fever. How has the FDA and CDC impeded or prevented the development of diagnostics like a test strip? Why do we depend on a diagnostic test that takes 3 days? This is criminal stupidity.

Why is there no immunization, or effective antiviral medications for Ebola? The US patent data base shows plenty of claims for treatments, why are these potential new treatments not developed and available?

The CDC is in charge of preventing emergent diseases from destroying American society. They have failed on their primary task.

I called this in a ZH comment posted within the past 10 days.  Good news is, if the exposed gets Ebola and nobody else on the boat does, the virus is NOT contagious.  OTOH, if Ebola sweeps thru that ship like grease thru a goose, .gov will surely have killed an industry, as well as a 100s of vacationers.  I'd be concerned if I were a Carnaval employee (note I did NOT say executive, since they're all set for life financially).

The CDC I was told is NOT a fully government organization. If this is the case than they can have litigation brought against them for damages and death which resulted from their mismanagement.

Someone should file a class action lawsuit against the CDC and MR. Friedan individually as well and sue them into oblivion.

Get this, from Boston.com:

>>10:15 a.m. Ebola gets a “czar”. President Obama will appoint Ron Klain as the Ebola “czar” for the United States, sources told CNN. Klain left the White House as Vice President Joe Biden’s chief of staff in 2011 to become president of Case Holdings, a firm that owns shares of other companies’ stock. Particularly of note, Case Holdings oversaw the business and philanthropic interests of the former AOL chairman Steve Case. So maybe Klain knows a thing or two about managing money.<<

Assume no one from Goldman Sachs was currently available for the position.

Wonder if Klain has shares in Ebola vaccine companies.
