Battleships And Helicopters Join Hunt For Missing Submarine: Sweden Prepares To "Use Weapons To Surface Sub"
The hunt for missing October continues.
Recall that over the weekend, one of the less reported stories was that Sweden had deployed its various army, navy and air force units to hunt down what was reportedly a damaged Russian sub that had sunk in the Stockholm archipelago, something which Russia vehemently denied.
Since then, things have escalated and as both the FT and RIA reported, Swedish authorities declared a safety distance of 10,000 meters (5.4 nautical miles) from all military vessels taking part in the search for the alleged foreign sub.
According to the Swedish Expressen newspaper, air traffic over the search area has been suspended. Such a large area of Swedish airspace has not been cordoned off since the '80s, the newspaper added. The fly ban will not affect passenger flights.
Swedish Navy vessels have reportedly sealed off a channel between Nynashamn and the island of Nattaro south of Stockholm. A large number of military vessels and helicopters are reported to be moving southward.
The Swedish Armed Forces first launched a major operation off the coast of Stockholm on Friday after receiving information, reportedly from a civilian, about the presence of an unknown underwater object in the region.
According to the Swedish Armed Forces, there have been three "very credible sightings" of an unknown object off the Swedish coast, suspected to be "foreign underwater activity." Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven stressed Monday that the ongoing operation is "not a submarine hunt," but an "underwater investigation."
But the key question remains, just whose sub is it that is missing? Earlier on Monday, a Russian Defense Ministry source told RIA Novosti that the unidentified object in Sweden could be a submarine belonging to the Dutch Navy.
A spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Navy told RIA Novosti that a Dutch submarine had recently visited Stockholm, but stated that it was no longer in Swedish waters when the "suspicious object" was first observed in the Stockholm archipelago.
Additionally, Bloomberg reported that a distress call caught in Swedish territorial waters on Oct. 17 has been incorrectly linked to presence of Dutch submarine, citing His Majesty’s Bruinvis, Karen Loos-Gelijns, spokeswoman for Defense Ministry says in e-mailed statement. She said the submarine went to Tallinn on Friday morning, stayed there over the weekend. She added that Dutch navy ships Tromp, Amsterdam, Evertsen, Zealand, submarine Bruinvis participated this month in international exercise Northern Archer in the Baltic Sea.
In other words, the Netherlands is refusing to take blame for the sub. As it Russia - recall that previously a spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry denied that the damaged sub belongs to Russia, stating that "there have been no extraordinary, let alone emergency situations involving Russian military vessels."
But while the originating nation of the offending sub, if there is indeed one, refuses to step up, Sweden is starting to lose patience. According to an update by TheLocal.se, battleships, minesweepers, helicopters and more than 200 troops continue to scour the area where they believe the sub is located.
Sweden's military has now been out on the hunt for five days, with the operation moving "across the archipelago" on Tuesday.
More:
Jesper Tengroth, press officer for the Swedish military, told The Local that the focus had switched from just the southern islands on Monday.
Swedish military vessels are now also patrolling open seas in the Danziger Gatt strait, news agency TT said. But Tengroth would not give any further details about where Swedish ships and military units were stationed for "operational reasons".
After three civilian sightings of suspicious activity in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden's Armed Forces have launched a full-scale investigation.
In fact it has gotten to the point where Sweden may simply blow up the offending military equipment just to make the point that "The most important value of the operation - regardless of whether we find something -- is to send a very clear signal that Sweden and its armed forces are acting and are ready to act when we think this kind of activity is violating our borders," Supreme Commander General Sverker Göranson said.
As a result, Sweden's military has announced that if it finds a suspect foreign vessel in the Stockholm archipelago, it is prepared to force it to the surface "with weapons if necessary".
"Our aim now is to force whatever it is up to the surface... with armed force, if necessary," he added.
He added that submarines are "extremely difficult" to find, and that Sweden has never succeeded in the past when it came to tracking them down.
"And no one else has either," he added.
If the sub is indeed Russian, it would be quite a hit for Sweden, which in more than a decade of hunting Russian U-boats in the 1980s and early nineties, never succeeded in capturing one, except in 1981 when the U137 ran aground several miles from one of Sweden's largest naval bases, triggering an embarrassing diplomatic stand-off for Russia.
Early Tuesday afternoon, at least five naval ships were stationed for more than two hours in an area east of Ingarö, the closest reported point to the Swedish mainland since the operation began. DN reported that one of the ships had "made contact" with something, but General Göranson denied the claim.
Göranson's comments to the Swedish media came after a nearly two-hour long meeting with Sweden's defence committee behind closed doors.
They also followed reports in the Dagens Nyheter newspaper that there had been more than 100 reported sightings of a suspect vessel from members of the public in the past day or so. "We're still getting more reports, and I want to underline the fact that we're happy about this," Göranson added.
Here is a cross-section of what has been alleged to be a Russian X-Ray/AC-12 class submarine, the Losharik.
In any event with every passing day, the surfacing of the damaged sub gets closer, assuming of course one exists. And if, as the local Swedish media reports allege, the sub does belong to Russia and the result if a major political humiliation for the Kremlin, will Putin just sit idly by, especially since what is going on close to Stockholm has become a regional spectacle. As the FT reported, "the Swedish military operation is being followed around the region. Edgars Rinkevics, Latvia’s foreign minister, wrote on Twitter at the weekend: “Closely following events in the Swedish territorial waters, may become a game changer of the security in the whole Baltic sea region."
It may indeed, and the answer will be forthcoming. After all there is only so much air a sub can store.

Depth there about 30 meters, you have to be an idiot that in 5 days did not find anything
Good point.
Absolutely. Or to stop any passing through to Tartous
That is great news for the crew, provided that it is a submarine and that there is a crew inside. At 100 feet, the crewwill not need any special equipment in order to effect a climb to the surface. With basic training the crewmembers could even get to the surface on one gulp of air without suffereing the bends. (I did this once from 20-25 meters as part of training back in 1973.)
The "sub" could become wedged amidst outcrops on the seabed, while trying to evade detection and to make an escape. The outcrops could distort the signals bouncing back to the surface ships above. At 30 meters, military divers could be inspecting the area to make certain what's down there.
Aside from all that, the Swedes don't seem too eager to capture, rescue, destroy, or positively identify the "sub". Just as it is with tanks on land, the best way to kill a submarine is with another submarine. I suspect that the Swedes don't want to do anything disruptive. Somebody -if not Sweden itself- should have been able to put a miniature sub down there by now.
If there is indeed a sub, and they can't find it for so many days, then subs are more a game changer then I though were in a current war. I mean, that sub would have plenty of time to sink their whole navy.
subs and manpads make difference in real
Russians are masters of propulsion
>then subs are more a game changer
Yes, they are. Submariners don't call surface ships "target ships" for nothing. I recall the sonar guys/fire control team coming back from a training simulator exercise they did against the Russian Navy. (Think Star Trek - Kobayashi Maru scenario)...
The crew sank the Russian northern fleet. First time apparently a sub crew ever did that in the simulation.
ZH readers, and even more importantly ZH Tylers, should really read this excellent article about the art of disinformation, both regarding the currently ongoing search operation and on previous occasions. It's written by a squadron leader in the Swedish Airforce. (Google translated, but seems fairly readable at a quick glance.)
The article states he used humantarian convoy into Ukraine to mask russian troops intering Ukraine to turn tide of war.....
Does he have evidence or more tinfoil hat conspiracy.
And people blame Russia for being crazy. Maybe he should mention how all of these news are just so recent from each other around the same time the Anti Russian rhetoric is high, and Russia being blamed for nearly everything.
I don't suppose you believe Amnesty either?
http://www.amnesty.org/en/news/ukraine-mounting-evidence-war-crimes-and-...
Nope. Can you identify what that picture shows? As well, can we identify where it was taken and whom it belong to? Yet there is mounting evidence that Ukraine is responisble for killing en mass citizens, mass burials and lying about MH-17. All amnesty is stating that Ukraine is massing evidence, not that the evidence actually proves anything.
Still awaiting for evidence.
Hi Börjesson. I'm Swedish too. I've been in the armed forces of Sweden. I can tell you without even a slight hesitation that all this Russia-hating bullshit must be eradicated from the Swedish culture. That, and the support for the Nazi regime of Ukraine. As for Ukraine, US started that long ago, they paid $5 billion to the Ukrainian opposition, admission caught on tape.
It's time for you and most of my other countrymen to FDISK and FORMAT their brains and start behaving like civilized people instead of paranoid Russia-haters. We are much better off being friends and friendly with everyone in the region. The Russians are interested in trading with their neighbours. We should be too, and stop believing we are in any way superior to anyone. We're not - in fact, we're rapidly drifting backwards.
Well said Kamath. Frankly I'm amazed that any country in your region of the world would not want to be on Russia's "good side". With their vast resources, geographical proximity, and a willingness to freely trade with their neighbors; what's the problem? Fear of Washington, I suspect.
who wouldn't, indeed? well, the truth is, things aren't as simple. i'm writing from a country next to the western borders of russia and the constant paranoia and fear mongering towards east is extremely unhealthy but history has thought us a lesson we cannot ignore - the soviet union. the trust cannot be rebuilt overnight. we have never been a threat to russia as we are smaller than any metropolitan city in the russian federation. i would welcome the friendship and trade partnership between these two countries but we are just too insignificant to be taken seriously by russia, so this will never happen and we will always be the pawn between west and east and this is no good for personal liberties nor anything else in this country. it's one of the worst things to be a small country just next to russia and recently the blame is not solely on their side. thank you, ussa.
russia is the largest country (landmass) in the world and if any of the big players wouldn't have imperial ambitions, they wouldn't be considered a world power. it's just the natural order of things.
I no longer believe anythinh Amnesty says. They have been compromised by the dirty money just as your so called Nobel Prize. You swedes are now a laughing stock with that Nobel Prize because now everyone knows it's all bullshit. Wake up numbnuts.
The Swedish Navy has already admitted to misidentifying the location of that white-looking vessel in the grainy photo.
And so far as the intercepted distress transmission goes
Saying this disinformation must stop, would be no more than pissing down the throat of the MSM.
The information that "bid the soldier" is posting has been out there well before this latest article by the Tyler's. But it is ignored by the Tyler's. As is the initial reports that the photo was taken by a military person but now the story is changed to civilian.
And no civilian has come forward to get in the papers for seeing the sub.
Tyler's are purposefully misleading people to a conclusion that there is a sub and it is Russian. Compromised?
The Russians have politely told the Swedes to check with the Dutch Minister of Defense, suggesting that they knew a Dutch sub had been in Jungfrau fjard.
The Dutch said they had one there a few days ago, but not now.
Of course, the media accepts the Dutch denial and assumes the Dutch are telling the truth while the Russians are lying.
This attitude by the Western Media was recently seen when the Russians arrested an Estonian Intelligence officer in Russia near the Estonian boarder. Estonia immediately claimed it was a cross border grab, although there were no Estonian witnesses to it (or none they had suborned at the time). As of yesterday, the MSM advances the Estonian counter charge and doesn't even mention the Russian side of the story.
It will never get any better. It is time to end all life on this planet.
And 'bid the soldiers' was one of the first to mention them here at zh :o)
Excellent article on misinformation is misinformation itself. Revealing though, to see what the Swedish are also subjected to. The warmongers http://carlbildt.wordpress.com/ are going full tilt.
Have we been here before....
'The strategic submarine "Kursk" that sank in 2000 was sunk by the Americans. This theory was once again raised by the Polish Wprost, referring to information allegedly received from Russian General Staff officer, "Lt. Col. Andrei." According to the authors, the restraint of the Russians made it possible to avoid a full-scale nuclear war.'
So ok the source might be english.pravda so possibly a micron or two of salt required but in view of past performance who knows.

Sweden's evidence looks irrefutable: http://i61.tinypic.com/2s96gxl.jpg
When was that photo taken? And where?
I DUNNO.
what is it? nessie?
It's amazing that, in this day and age of photographing license plates from orbit, pictures like this can be so fuzzy.
The swedish armed forces label it as intelligence operation. Apparently it is a region that sees activity from time to time. Perhaps this time just make a very thorough check of the area in order to see if anything is there or on the bottom, vessel or otherwise.

Funny it will turn out to be that same Russian guy with the remote controlled dildo that spoofed the chess player candidate against Putin
The Swedes are racists for defending their borders.
There are a couple of possibilities.
Russia or Nato or someone else has a submarine in our waters.
Nato wants to bring Sweden closer by making us fear Russia and are faking a U-boat.
The Swedish Marine wants more funds or new equipment and are faking a threat.
A military supplier needs cash or the owner wants the stocks to go up before he sells.
My bet is that Russia would not be stupid enough to risk another military encounter in Europe at the point in time when sanctions may be lifted. They have very little to gain from such an operation.
Its American.
I as a swede, and probably 90% of the rest of us dont give a flying shit.
Well one reason is that a big part arent swedish at all, just happen to have the nationality or permanent residence because some war down in the islamic republics.
The other reason is that noone in sweden gives a shit about the country anymore as nationalism and brotherhood belongs to the past. Why care about someone who´s spitting you in the face? It wont take long until the last productive and useful people leave this godforsaken country.
One of Swedish ancestory told me there is more real Viking blood exists in one region Russia than average of Sweden anymore..
That's the truth right there.
All the vikings are a bunch of pussies. I lived a while in Denmark and Sweden and had a swedish girlffriend that lived with me when I moved back to the states. All the males have been emasculated. A bunch of Euro fags. I had my way with the hot women because they wanted to be fucked by a real man. This was 25 years ago and my swedish friends were already complaining about the muslim immigrants from the iran-iraq war that the jew influenced liberals were importing. I still don't get it - how can people - esp. the men - not have balls and do something ? Fight for your view of the world , don't let the subhuman press make you a slave.
You speak for yourself only, and certainly not for any 90% of the population. Most of us Swedes haven't given up on our native country yet, and we never will. "Alla meddelanden om att motståndet skall upphöra är falska."
Well then, we should've shot down or forced down the US Air Force jet that violated our airspace a while ago, right? But no, the Russia-haters only want our armed forces to open fire on Russians. (Oh, and still zero proof of any Russian intrusion, and the only submarine ever damaged in Swedish waters dispensed a surface marker used by US submarines. Back in 1982. Guess that was a super-special triple-maskirovka by the Soviets though, the crafty bastards probably reverse-engineered the US surface marker and dispensed when hit by a 600kg mine. Or not.)
If 90% in real, how is the problems?
not given up, but not take action?
90% claim would imply single minded purpose...
then how to explain?
You sound like Boris, except you are not funny.
That you find it necessary to say: "Most of us Swedes haven't given up on our native country yet" tells me there "is" a problem within Sweden that some people (previous commenter random999) have given up on because they've had enough of it, and others (you etc) have not yet given up.
Let me guess that the problems you both refer to were ALL caused by the political elites. Whether they be immigration, economic, high taxation, excessive government, too many laws/rules/regulations, abuse of police power etc etc. It goes on.
Am I Right?
Government is rarely the solution to any problem, it's nearly always the cause.
At university I made friends with some Swedes. I cherish the memories I made hanging out with them. THe Swedish are good people.
Barbara, is that you??

The nationalism and brotherhood that was common in Germany in the 40's belongs to the past. You are the one spitting people in the face when you talk about people as having to be useful or productive to count. I have heard hundreds of guys whine just like you. Most of them in their 40's, living at home with mom, blaming their own problems on someone else. Stop being a victime!
If the water tastes like mint, then the sub is British!
Is this Sweden's "Gulf of Tonkin" incident?
Sweden should be concerned with the enemy already inside the gates!

I'd like to see, once and for all, a list of say the top 10 news channels and news papers and news magazines in the US, Canada, UK, Scanidnavia, France, australia, etc.
Then, I'd like to see which are owned by Jews or managed, or have 'disproportionate ' [say more than 20% to be abundantly fair] of senior editors and/or writers.
Supposedly in Germany before ww2, Jews owned most of the newspapers. As they had before ww1 - despite being under 10% of the population, at very most.....
It begins to look like a concerted, international effort by organized "Jewry" to control entertainment and news media....every night I watch TV and watch the credits I am amazed - look, some fo my favorite comedians and actors and directors are Jews - but 2.5% of the population appears for be "boxing out" non-Jews, from us nastyle European white types to other ethnic minorities.
And they have convinced the majority of people that while its kosher to discuss "white privilege" as Jon Stewart did wlast night - to parse it further, and more accurately and precisely as to Jewish privilege and power would make one - suddenly - full of "hate" - not someone seeking economic and cultural "justice."
Cute.

White Rabbit has produced a blockbuster, “The Antiracist Hitler.”
could it be Russia is testing their new stealth sub? if so the Swedes will never find it largely because it's most likely long gone.
another suggestion was Moscow is mapping the area looking for good spots to hide underwater assets in preperation for a large scale conflict which will include the baltic.
but it wouldn't surprise me if it is a US boomer they are hunting...it's not as if Washington doesn't have a long sad history of stirring the pot.
to be continued....

Swedish Navy reported headed to Loch Ness after they get tired of sub hunting....they expect to have better luck finding Nessie.

I am wonder how much of their Navy is looking...
is this real?
maybe should rethink all the blustering at Russia
Recently, Sweden decided to reverse the decision to let a German company (HDW, later ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems) build submarines for the Swedish navy at the Kockums shipyard in Karlskrona, Sweden, which the Germans had acquired in 1999. When the Germans said that they should either get more pay for submarines produced in Sweden or move production to Germany, the Swedish government decided to let the Swedish military equipment manufacturer Saab hire the Kockums engineers and let them design the next generation of Swedish submarines. On July 22, 2014, Saab also bought the Kockums shipyard so that future submarines could be built there.
My impression is that the reason why the Swedish government did that was that they (and NATO) wished to prevent that unemployed, Swedish submarine engineers would be hired by Pakistan, for instance. (I don´t think that the underlying motive for the Swedish government was that they were concerned about Swedish high-tech. They usually don´t care about such aspects.) Swedish submarines fitted with stirling engines can operate underwater a far longer time than ordinary diesel electric submarines and are also a more silent and harder to detect. These submarines can be described as poor man´s nuclear submarines. The combination of nuclear missiles and a larger version of the Swedish style submarines would be a lethal combination. The Germans have built five similar submarines for the Israeli navy.
Perhaps someone feels that the Karlskrona shipyard should also get some orders for surface ships as well so that no engineers at the Karlskrona shipyard have to be laid off? You need surface ships if want to chase midget submarines.
The largest party in the new ruling coalition government, the social democrats, poses no threat to the Karlskrona shipyard. But the other party in the coalition government, the Green Party, does not like to spend money submarines, surface ships or aircraft unless they are forced to that. Leading members of the Green Party may also feel that it is not that important to prevent Swedish submarine engineers from working abroad in countries like Pakistan. The ex-communists, which support the coalition government, probably think that Swedish engineers working for Pakistan is no problem from strategic defense point of view (they are probably more concerned about unemployment among blue collar workers that may be laid off at the Kockums shipyard).
However, I don´t understand why Russia should feel that it is important that Pakistan won´t be able to hire Swedish submarine engineers. The submarine U-137 which stranded near Karlskrona back in 1981 was a Soviet submarine. The midget submarine which was chased by the Swedish navy in 1982 (The Hårsfjärden incident) was a NATO submarine even according to Swedish mainstream media, http://www.expressen.se/debatt/sannolikt-att-det-var-en-natoubat/ . Visiting NATO ships had left a slower midget submarine behind and that sub was mistakenly identified as a possible Soviet intruder like the U-137. When the Swedish navy had been informed about the mistake it was too late and a naval minefield had to be deactivated secretely for a while in order to enable the NATO midget submarine to escape.
Another plausible theory is that Russia doesn´t like the recent agreement with NATO that allows NATO to deploy troops to Sweden if the Swedish government invites them and that Russia wants to demonstrate that they don´t like this agreement.
Which the Germans deeply discounted to the Israeli navy.
battleships? lmao tyler im so disappointed in you
The Swedish navy has about five surface warships. They are about 200 ft (60 m) long. Sweden has never had any battleship (a typical WWII battleship was more than 800 ft long). The cruisers were decommissioned in the 1960s. One of them was sold to Chile back in 1973. The last frigates and destroyers were scrapped in the 1980s.
Let's put this in perspective.
To answer Timmy's earlier question: The West will not let it be, whether it exists or not.
The nations of NATO are out to convince their peoples that Russia became as aggressive as the USSR.. And America the Spiteful is out to get revenge.
LA VENDETTA.
What happened after Obama pulled his negroid penis out of his pants and spat into the open mike to Medvedev, 'I'll lick yours if you lick mine. After I'm re-elected?'
Here's what happened.
Russia gave asylum to Snowden, the alpha and omega of the West's problem with Putin today. Snowden landed in Moscow around June 23, 2013 and here's what happened after that
a) The 'false flag' gas attack near Damascus on August 21, 2013.
b) On September 20, 2013 the Greenpeace mob from the Arctic Sunrise attack the Gazprom's platform, and the Russians are vilified for doing what every Western country would have done if their platform were boarded. Did Timmermans tell Kumi Bugaboo to send the Arctic Sunrise to the Gazprom platform?
c) On October 8, the deputy Ambassador to the Netherlands is arrested, beaten and detained and 'cleped a drunkard', ("Hamlet" Act I Scene 4). A short time later the new Dutch King visited Moscow. Everything seemed fine.
d) Two months later Victoria Nuland expelled 200,000 nazis from her fallopian tubes and in February 2014, the Ukrainian revolution ripped that country from Putin's hands.
e) Sanctions begin
f) July 17, 2014 MH17 went down and Russia got the blame, nevermind that the ATC tapes never saw the light of day.
g) And now a strange off shore sighting, misrepresented by the Swedish military who say they have no idea what kind of craft or what nationality it is, but which doesn't stop an orgy of corrupt reporters and editors with their limp innuendos dragging in the gutter, getting extra pay every time the words Russia and Putin are mentioned.
h) Sikorski's infamous statement on Sunday that he heard that the Russian president told Donald Tusk, then the Polish prime minister, that Poland should “become participants in the divide of Ukraine” during a Polish delegation's 2008 visit to Moscow. He has since recanted this.
All of the above (not to mention the law about 'gay propaganda') to embarrass Russia and Putin in the eyes of the world and weaken both their positions in the community of nations.
I don't doubt some of you don't think Snowden is the cause of this.
Probably an isis sub
The answer to whose sub was sighted is really quite obvious.
DUH
