That sounds about right Urban Redneck. I couldn't agree more with your comment.

I like Win7. I switched back in '09 from XP. I'm getting ready to purchase some more PC's and want windows7 PRO on them.

I really like Linux though. I love all the free apps. and software. I can move adobe files from Windows and Icetea(linux) runs them just fine off my USB stick. I didn't even have to partition my hard-drive. That's off a 16GIG usb stick!

The one other really useful feature with Virtualbox, particularly for "work" programs is that the disk image is completely independent of the Linux OS, so regardless of whether I boot Kubuntu, Redhat, Kali, or even if I decide to switch to a new a new OS next month I don't have to reconfigure all the crappy Windows programs. I just install Virtualbox and import the the Windows image and I'm back in business.

That's really a plus. Although I'd still probably flash a system image on my external drive once a week.

I'm still not completely sold on "cloud storage". I like autonomy and privacy.

The other nice thing about a virtual image is that you can back it up and when WIndows gets blown away by some patch or whatever, just use a copy of the backup and you're good to go - much faster than Microsoft's lame attempts at checkpointing...

WINE is not a transfer program, it's an emulator program.  Use "Linux_FileReader.exe" for getting files off of a Linux hard disk partition and onto a Windowz NTFS partition.

Let's face it; we all like Linux, (a lot); but WINE is a failure. but I don't need it. if whatever it is doesn't operated under firefox, I don't need that either.  Linux Mint is for people like me who don't know nuthin; and people who are tired of mud wrestling microshit should really try it; it's just point and click, honest !.  And it has huge range of applications that download themselves; (basically), and just work.

Great idea - that's what I do on my desktop system.

But it becomes more difficult when, for instance, my preferred browser Firefox Palemoon just announced an end to XP version updates. Same thing happening slowly but surely with other programs.

Which is it - Firefox or Palemoon? You do realize they are different, right?

More to the point - what difference does it make if you can't get updates? Who the hell updates their browser until it starts freezing every time you try to watch a vid or refuses to display British websites correctly?

And if you simply must update FF or PM, go to their legacy download page and download the next higher version, rather than using the honking huge button on the splash page.

"Which is it - Firefox or Palemoon? You do realize they are different, right?"

No, they're not different in the way you imply. Palemoon is Firefox with 4-5 features removed (eg: parental controls) for those who don't want/need them and one or two other minor GUI differences. Palemoon is described by Moonchild (author) as "Firefox, Palemoon Build". All plug-ins that work in Firefox also work in Palemoon.

On updating, I always get my updates directly from http://www.palemoon.org/ and instal them manually, never thru the update option inside Palemoon.

My point is that it won't be long before the final XP version of Palemoon on my desktop PC fails to correctly load some websites as it becomes more and more out of date.

Fortunately my laptop has Win7 on it and I will keep Palemoon updated on that.

Guess what?  At installation the Windows 10 Technical Preview tries to force you to create or use your Microsoft account.  As in, make your Hotmail or Outlook email and password your system log in or create one.  How secure is that going to be?

You can create a "Local" log in but it is "not recommended".

Tracking?  Yes, it tells you it will track your online activity and link to "One Drive" (their cloud drive) and link your Microsoft account with your system log in, and vice-verse.

Yup, they just can't let go of the "Big Brother" routine.

I've run Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and they are very good.

There are some programs they just won't run though, and the Girlfriend would be lost.

If it weren't for .gov running everything on Microsoft O.S. and Office they'd have to do better.

This is exactly the point.  With every iteration of Windows you are progressively locked out of your own machine.   Even in Windows 7 there are several system related tasks that have become harder to access and overall, system administration tools have not been improved since Win95/NT4. It is very much about locking you out of your hardware and denying you any meaningful control of the system.  To this day, Windows does not have a decent command line environment, and the command line administration tools are a complete joke.  This is also the main reason Windows is such a malware magnet, very easy to infect and real hell to clean.   That and general MS dumbfuckery.

Great comment.  It IS irritating.  The workaround is to open a second instance of Excel from the Start Menu, or if you have a shortcut on your desktop.  Then within that you can use File/Open to open the other workbook.

Russian Processor:

http://www.mcst.ru/

Open Source. OS Russian or Chinese

Adiós to IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Intel, AMD etc.

Maybe some guys in NY continue drooling in the Big Brother bag, spending money we do not have on products that will just fuck them privacy.

Europe and Brazil have already developed the Linux masterfully.

I'll give some examples:

Linux does not appear the MAC address of my network card, the city where I am connecting because my modem is configured, my IP, My Network, Gateway, Netmask etc., all reconfigured.

Yet some morons try to access my machine.

Sweet illusion!

I never trusted in Thor, I always thought the thing coconut pudding made ??available by the NSA.

Some of you may try using a bootable Linux, no need to install, you download it on the Net, recording a DVD or CD or a USB flash drive and turn on the computer.

The machine gives boot Linux without hurting your OS, it works only with the processor and the memory installed, very interesting.

It is the same principle that Operating System "Kolibry" that the Russians have developed in the Cold War.

In Network you only see the tip of the iceberg, 10 or 15%, the rest is much, much deeper than the vain imaginations of you can conceive.

hehe.

You just have to get used to what you're pointing and clicking, but you don't have to type computer gibberish in the terminal.

These tablets we have seem to work pretty well.  We have an Ipad2 which has worked well for years and recently bought some Polaroid tablet with Android because I got sick of the kids fighting over the Ipad2.  The kids can't seem to fuck up either one of them.  We have been running that Apple for over two years now with no problems and the Polaroid is only about one month old but no problems.  That's pretty good but here is my problem.  I am an adult male and I have larger fingers than most females and children.  If I go to try to type anything on one of those tablets it ends up looking like this; Iop dfopnm';tr llkijer tyhjiusa.  Sitting there and fucking around for half an hour just trying to write a sentence is bullshit.  Even a woodpecker would be pissed off.

Tablets seem to be the way the market is moving.  I still like my laptops and my keyboards.  There will always be a market for them.  I know that you can add a keyboard to a tablet but tablets are way too small for old male people like me to read and way too big to put in your pocket.  Why can't one of these manufacturers take something like Android and put it into a 17 inch laptop configuration with some actual RAM capability and a hardrive that actually has some space on it?  Maybe they do but I have not seen one in electronics stores for sale.  It's just more and more tablets and smartphones.

the words "Microsoft" and "We finally fixed everything" are mutually incompatible terms. MS rarely fix anything, they simply move on to a new version.

When the epitaph of Microsoft is written it will simply read:

Windows 10 = MS has to accelerate the upgrade treadmill to get extra cash because they cannot transition from the traditional PC to other electronic computing resources.

In 10 years you are going to wonder why 'Windows' was such a big deal, and why anyone ever bothered re-buying their OS and office system every 2-3 years.

I do science, engineering and write software.  For 10+ years all my PCs had AMD processors (8-core CPUs for the past couple years) and all but one runs a linux OS.  The fact is, macroshaft is utterly obsolete, and the only reason one of my PCs runs windoze 7 is to support solidworks and my favored schematic and PCB layout software.

From what I've heard, most "regular folks" have moved away from Intel CPUs, windoze OS and from PCs almost entirely.  Apparently they increasingly find their stupid smart cell phones (or ipad) accomplishes [almost] everything what they want or need, and I suspect this trend will continue to the point where Intel CPUs, windoze OS, and PCs become nearly obsolete for most "regular folks".

Of course, scientists, engineers and application developers will still have PCs, and depending on how various issues play out, perhaps rabid gamers will continue to buy high end PCs for another 10+ years.

It is very difficult to predict much beyond 10 years in the realm of "gadgets versus computers".

only you are making that prediction. or as the WSJ noted in its review of OS X: "Why anyone still uses that antiquated OS (Windows) is beyond us"

you sound like you think the world is still flat.....Mac use Intel processors and can run Windows Natively, not emulated-works even smoother than on a PC

I run both, when i need Windows-and as far as the PC is concerned, the OS running on a  SONY or Toshiba or Intel computervia  dual booting

and then you have Bill Gates explicit permission to use Windows Backdoor. The NSA and FBI are suing Apple, because it cannot be cracked by them

My 84 year old neighbor got a new desktop with 8.1 and no touchscreen. What a disaster. Tried to set up a Win 7 drive for him but the new hardware was all ported solely to 8.1 and had no drivers for 7, so I had to rebuild the 8 and let him deal with it.

The purpose of 8 is to go the Apple route and eventually make it impossible for end users to modify their systems. That and the cloud will eventually put everyone back into the "hopelessly dependent on large institutions" box that the old XT clone set the world free from.

That's why I never liked Apple. If they had their way, computers would still cost 10,000 a pop.

If only windoze was as good as the airplane metaphore shown.  I vastly prefer working on linux, and only retain one working windoze 7 computer for those few applications that aren't available in a linux version (for me that means solidworks and my favored PCB layout software... period).

Even with its quirks, linux is vastly better, and gets more "moron friendly" every year.  Not to mention the fact that linux isn't purposely designed to enslave and destroy you.

Exactly. Now why couldn't I say that. Cause you're better at this than me, that's why. Linux Mint is finally what they've been promising forever; it's actually moron usable. I know; I am one. It's just point and click, people, I promise. Typically when you wipe a hard drive from a PC and install Linux Mint the machine runs twice as fast. typically. and then it doesn't slow down; because it's not collecting every virus in the world, and because half the operating cycles are devoted to reporting back to Bill Gates everything you're doing. Try it, you'll like it !!

Somewhere along the line Micro$soft forgot how to tell its story.  Basic marketing 101 and they have seemed to failed.

My first machine was a Toshiba T2100 laptop with two 720k 3.5" floppies (I couldn't afford the 10Mb hard disk model) running Dos 2.1? I had an integrated WP, spreadsheet, database and something else package, and my machine never crashed once. It was an orange gas-plasma screen and I loved it.

I had a dot-matrix printer probably 75dpi resolution.

Who did I give that laptop to, I bet you it still works fine.

"IBM/Intel/Microsoft" PC/laptop technology hasn't really moved forwards since the 286; it always has only three wheels.

No I dont agree Windows 10 has done a good job as it appears from what they say.

Especially about load sharing on processors in graphics/game apps.

And closer to metal directx12 But what I expect from them is ray tracing in the next directX & in next windows.

Also I expect windows to be compatible to heads on gear like Oculus , Samsung gear, sony VR etc. so that the next Windows is a wearable 3D OS built on a graphics engine. And bye bye , for you all will start living in a Matrix (Controlled by HomObbama on weeds)
