"Whatever We Decide Is A Disaster For Us" France Admits Putin Is Winning, Europe "Blinked"
While the analogy of Vladimir Putin playing geopolitical chess (while the rest of the world plays checkers) has been a popular one, the French ambassador Gerard Araud has a different - somewhat stunningly honest - persepctive: Putin "is more a poker player really, putting all the money on the table; saying, 'Do the same' and of course we blink. We don't do the same." As Bloomberg reports, Araud goes on to express entirely un-Juncker-like, how Putin has outmaneuvered his opponents and humiliated Ukraine. Simply put, he adds, the Russian president "has won because we were not ready to die for Ukraine, while apparently he was," leaving the ominous question, "when is Putin going to stop? Whatever we decide is a disaster for us."
Vladimir Putin has outmaneuvered his opponents and humiliated Ukraine by continuing to back pro-Russian separatists and flouting a cease-fire, making it crucial that sanctions on Russia remain firm, France’s ambassador to the U.S. said.
The Russian president “has won because we were not ready to die for Ukraine, while apparently he was,” Ambassador Gerard Araud said yesterday at a Bloomberg Government breakfast in Washington... Echoing the view of other European envoys in Washington, Araud expressed concern that the Ukraine conflict has hit an impasse, leaving Putin the winner by default.
Poroshenko is “kneeling in front of Putin with the cord around his neck and saying, ‘You know, you have won,’” and Putin is still not backing down, Araud said.
While many observers have called Putin a geopolitical chess player, he said, the Russian leader is more a “poker player really, putting all the money on the table, saying, ‘Do the same,’ and of course we blink. We don’t do the same.”

The economic sanctions against Russia must stay in place to prevent Putin from going further, said Araud, who moved to Washington in September after serving as the French ambassador to the United Nations.

“The question is there on the table: When is Putin going to stop?” Araud said. “That’s the reason that we need to keep the sanctions” because, “let’s be frank, it’s more or less the only weapon that we have. We are not going to send our soldiers in Ukraine. It does not make sense to send weapons to the Ukrainians, because the Ukrainians would be defeated real easily, so it will only prolong the war” and lead to a “still bigger Russian victory.”

I work with loads of Russians and they are very smart, very dedicated and absolutely play to win. They are also some of the most depressing people I have ever talked to. A large dose of realism and a fair bit of fatalism describe their point of view. I don't believe I've ever met an optimistic Russian.

Generally speaking, it is impossible for the vast majority of the people, and therefore their "leaders," to think in sufficiently different ways about militarism. I think you are right on the money here! The US are looking for new allies everywhere. Someone to do their dirty work. Other countries that can put pressure on Russia, soldiers in Libya, send aircrafts to Syria and so on. Russia started going away from the petrodollar and everything turned to shit. Does it matter? It's not about who has the biggest pile, it's who uses it to back an international trading currency. The rouble, dollar and yuan will still exist, still be used and not be gold-backed. They don't have to be. Captive audience and all.
Ridiculously contrived example: If Russia and China one held 1/10th the gold of the U.S. but used their gold to solidly back an intenational trading currency, then the USD is finished as THE reserve currency because nothing backs the USD. Nobody believes the US and EU and there's no way they will allow a physical inventory even if they do claim to back the existing currency in response. Russia and China don't expect anyone to trust them (they won't even trust eachother) - the inventories will be audited and verified independently to assure the world that the currency is backed. The only thing they need to replace the USD is a currency that has actual value: the Altyn (or whatever they end up calling it).
If the U.S. threw every last ounce they supposedly have to back the USD, it would be maybe two or three percent backed. When they confiscate everyone's gold, it will bump it up a few more percent, but it's still worthless fiat. Even the Swiss Franc is only 15% or so backed nowadays. Maybe in a decade the Swiss will bump it up to 30% or 40%. Big deal. If China and Russia issue a 100% gold-backed currency then EVERY other currency on earth will be measured against it for international trade. Let's see the banksters try to rig cross-rates against a gold-backed currency. They can only rig rates between worthless fiats.
People will still carry on international trade in USD or CHF, but the only thing that will matter is the USD or CHF cross-rates against the Altyn. Let me offer something counterintuitive, something from the heart, about the Russian people.
I'm a student of WWII. Born in 1945, WWII still resonated when I was growing up.
Wikipedia: During World War II, Nazi Germany engaged in deliberately genocidal policies towards Soviet Union prisoners of war (POWs). This resulted in some 3.3 to 3.5 million deaths, about 60% of all Soviet POWs. Again Wikipedia, Total US WWII deaths: 407,000. Do the math. The US suffered 1/8th the deaths just the Russian POW's suffered, and maybe as miniscule as 1/100th the deaths the USSR in toto suffered.
It fucking chokes me up every time I think about it, and I think about it a lot.
Now for something different. The Japanese banzai charge became one of the icons of the Pacific war. Used during early battles, the Japs largely abandoned the banzai attack by the time the US invaded Iwo Jima and Okinawa, so I've had difficulty trying to determine the number of dead the Japanese suffered solely in banzai attacks. Unfortunately, the published figures are not that granular. My guess? Let's say 80,000 died.
Now, think about this: How many Russians died in banzai attacks? What? Russians doing banzai attacks? Of course, they did. Particulary during 1941, Russian soldiers flung themselves against the mightly Wehrmacht just to buy time for the Soviet Union to rearm, and those fucking stupid, noble Russian banzai warriors died by the hundreds of thousands. Fuck the pitiful Japanese banzai attacks. The Russians did it far better, and suffered far more.
The Russian people from time immemorial have always deserved better leaders than they've had. If the USA sucks absolutely due to the leaders we have now -- and it does so suck -- then Russia does, too.

At the end of the day everyone knew this to be the case once the going started to get tough. Russia, a miserable and corrupt petrol station of the world, wasn't exactly expected to react or retaliate. It is a weakling after all. Its reasoning for doing so is obvious though.
