"Whatever We Decide Is A Disaster For Us" France Admits Putin Is Winning, Europe "Blinked"

Tyler Durden's picture

While the analogy of Vladimir Putin playing geopolitical chess (while the rest of the world plays checkers) has been a popular one, the French ambassador Gerard Araud has a different - somewhat stunningly honest  - persepctive: Putin "is more a poker player really, putting all the money on the table; saying, 'Do the same' and of course we blink. We don't do the same." As Bloomberg reports, Araud goes on to express entirely un-Juncker-like, how Putin has outmaneuvered his opponents and humiliated Ukraine. Simply put, he adds, the Russian president "has won because we were not ready to die for Ukraine, while apparently he was," leaving the ominous question, "when is Putin going to stop? Whatever we decide is a disaster for us."

As Bloomberg reports,

Vladimir Putin has outmaneuvered his opponents and humiliated Ukraine by continuing to back pro-Russian separatists and flouting a cease-fire, making it crucial that sanctions on Russia remain firm, France’s ambassador to the U.S. said.

The Russian president “has won because we were not ready to die for Ukraine, while apparently he was,” Ambassador Gerard Araud said yesterday at a Bloomberg Government breakfast in Washington... Echoing the view of other European envoys in Washington, Araud expressed concern that the Ukraine conflict has hit an impasse, leaving Putin the winner by default.

Poroshenko is “kneeling in front of Putin with the cord around his neck and saying, ‘You know, you have won,’” and Putin is still not backing down, Araud said.

While many observers have called Putin a geopolitical chess player, he said, the Russian leader is more a “poker player really, putting all the money on the table, saying, ‘Do the same,’ and of course we blink. We don’t do the same.”

...

The economic sanctions against Russia must stay in place to prevent Putin from going further, said Araud, who moved to Washington in September after serving as the French ambassador to the United Nations.

...

“Whatever we decide is a disaster for us,” Araud said, again expressing his personal view. On one side, he said, lies France’s credibility as an arms supplier who delivers on contracts, and on the other, the difficulty of delivering a weapons system to Putin, who might use it against Ukraine or a European ally.

Araud concludes - rather ominously - and far too honestly for a paid-up member of the European elite:

“The question is there on the table: When is Putin going to stop?” Araud said. “That’s the reason that we need to keep the sanctions” because, “let’s be frank, it’s more or less the only weapon that we have. We are not going to send our soldiers in Ukraine. It does not make sense to send weapons to the Ukrainians, because the Ukrainians would be defeated real easily, so it will only prolong the war” and lead to a “still bigger Russian victory.”

2. The Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Donetsk Alexander Zakharchenko allowed residents of DPR not to pay loans to Ukrainian banks and not to repay debts for utility services.

LOL!   This guy is so cool.  He is like a Slavic Steve McQueen.  Another truth teller like Putin.   He said people could stop payment until martial law is ended.

Maybe the Ukrainian banks aka Kiev Junta needs a Linda Green signature on their mortgages.

Gotta love watching the Weekend Okhrana caper with glee at the idea that France is afraid of Mirova Putinova. So what if they are? It isn't the froggies who are garroting Russia financially but that ineffectual weakling Barack Hussein Obama. Still, even his half-hearted efforts devoid of European enthusiasm and support are already turning Russia into a beggar knocking desperately on the Chinese gates for help.

Help which will come only if it is in China's interests to provide and at a price that China will set sans negotiation with the Kremlin supplicant and future client state. Good thing Putinova does all that karate stuff. Keeps him limber enough to grab his ankles when the Chinese Ambassador comes to call.

But you guys are welcome to worship him if you wish. The clouds gather and there are signs everywhere in the skies.

Paul Craig Roberts on Putin's Valdai speech: "...These are the remarks of a humanitarian political leader, the like of which the world has not seen in my lifetime. Compare Putin to the corrupt war criminal in the White House or to his puppets in office in Germany, UK, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, and you will see the difference between a criminal clique and a leader striving for a humane and livable world in which the interests of all peoples are respected..."

The Ukraine is on the doorstep of Russia, just as Viet Nam is on the doorstep of China. Russia and China are invested in their own doorsteps ... kind of like the US would be invested in Canada or Mexico or France might be invested in Belgium.

France cares nothing about the Ukraine or the Ukranian people. To France, the Ukranian people are just toys and tools to be used and played with.

There is the difference.

Ukranian people no matter how much where attacked by criminal Putin regime goons, stay together. They are robbed by ex-president who was Putin's puppet and stole wealth from country. But still, somehow people stand strong no matter what. Bless them! May they win those Putin's goons and this brainwash that Putin regime media and so called alternative media (not all but like Zerohedge) that is controlled by Putin regime - looses. Because truth will win them in the end!

In 2012 a majority of people in Ukraine voted for Yanukovich and the Party of Regions. The majorities were much larger east of the Dneiper, and the majorities in the regions along the Black Sea were smaller; But collectively, these votes were able to overcome those who voted against a Russia-oriented Ukraine as much as for a German-oriented regime. So the "Ukrainian People" are very much divided. But every 5 years, they get to vote. And during the interim, they have a Rada (parliament) to make the laws.

In 2013, Ukraine's president tried First to get economic aid from the EU, in return for which he would align his country with the European Union and with NATO. All the EU would offer was a 1 Billion Euro loan. That was nothing compared to the more than 100 Billion Euros that the EU gave to Greece+Portugal+Spain in both grants and loans. And it would not pay for more than 3 months of energy from Russia. So Yanukovich went to Russia to see what it had to offer.

Putin offered Ukraine a guarantee on all debts issed by the government up to 15 Billion Euros. And he offered Ukraine a 30% discount on the price of gas that Russia was charging to the European nations, and supported existing trade relations with Russia, which included 0% tariffs on Ukrainian goods exported to Russia. So, Yanukovich took Putin's offer.

Now what kind of moronic bigot would cry "FOUL" and "Cheat" against Yanukovich and Russia over this arrangement? Only one so consumed with hatred for Russia, and so infused with ignorance that he would prefer "His?" countrymen to be poorer and his country's resources to be sold to foreign capitalists!

After 3 months of riotous demonstrations, which were openly supported by the US, Yanukovich agreed to hold early elections. But the Maidan rioters would not take the chance (the probability) that elections would turn out pretty much as they had in 2012. So, the riots turned into a rebellion, which became a coup d'etat against the elected government and against the majority will of the people. And you are going to call Putin and Yanokovich "Criminals"?

Yup, it was pretty obvious to anyone who read more than headline news that the Russian deal was much sweeter than the EU deal.  Plus, EU demanded freedom for the oligarch Timoshenko and Russia did not.  But we never hear that in the western media, only that Yanukovich leaned toward Russia and therefore was a Russian-loving stooge.  No, it was only that he was negotiating for all Ukraine could get.  Now the Ukrainian people will suffer for a generation or more because of the junta and the coup.

The thing about trying to take the morale high ground with someone like Putin you got to be honest and truthful.

Erm, every western nation fails on fraudulent and corrupt behaviour at the highest level so it makes it "really easy" for Putin don't ya think?

The comparison is the difference in the lesser of 2 evils ... your own government or Putin.
