However, it is extra-ordinary how in America (Land of the Free?), the word 'liberal' has become a pejorative. To have a liberal attitude implies being tolerant of change, not bound by authoritarianism and in favour of self-regulation. We are all innately free, the question is whether we can accept the freedom of another to speak their mind.
Both left and right have become such fragile creatures that they feel hurt by words and careless of meaning - too lazy-minded to enquire into their own prejudices or where they got their moral perspective from.

The difficulty is that meaning requires context to be shared. The word 'bow' is a good example - an action after a performance, used to project arrows or the pointy end of a ship?
What I was commenting on is a uniquely American perspective on the word liberal - which you reinforce. In the rest of the English speaking word it's meaning is taken to be as found in the dictionary, and has evolved with our language over hundreds of years.
As Swimnguy points out in a later comment, language is being intentionally shaped - memes are created - as a form of social control. One way of asserting liberty would be to take back words like liberal and not mindlessly follow where you are being led.

If you are trying to engage in communicative action, speech where you are trying to be honest, listen to the other side's truth, and reach consensus, and the other party wants no part of it because they feel betrayed and gave up hope long ago, what's next? They define the situation regardless of how you and I might talk about how meaning is X or Y or Z.
I think that is what you are staring at with some of the commenters here.
I used to self-identify as a liberal. Then I understood that some folks are not reachable by logic or compassion. They are intractable. I have to have a response to that which is flexible and includes a stage where force is acceptable and even embraced. People want formulas and dogmas and rote definitions, black and white, because they don't want to think about it anymore, they want to be safe. To some the liberal formula looks like staying "open" at all costs. To some the conservative formula looks like staying closed, even when it isn't needed. The real answer is case by case, neither stance is good all the time. That takes a lot of effort, most would rather not do that.

It actually has NOTHING to do with a definition of one who 'believes' in a 'power' (except in the most esoteric senses of 'going to Church RELIGIOUSLY every Sunday, Saturday, Friday, Wednesday night, or whenever).
Some of the discussion threads seem to be focused on the creation of their DISSENT (sort of like arguing about how many Camels can pass through the eye of the Needle).
'Liberals' and 'Conservatives' (by 'modern definition') have exactly the SAME goals now (their only true difference seems to be the methods of achieving these goals). DEATH TO HUMANITY IN GENERAL (but, not in MY neighborhood, eh, Satan?).

Turning the word "liberal" into the pejorative "Liberal" is the crowning achievement of Frank Luntz, as William Safire's was the creation of the meme of "Liberal Media Bias." It's all about shaping and sabotaging political conversation in America, and even eliminating the potential for political conversation in America, to right-wing partisan advantage. The trick is to introduce alternate meanings of words, and to create artificial constructs that can be applied at any time to derail a conversation. It's the equivalent of constantly saying, "I know you are, but what am I?"
American Liberals aren't liberal, and American Conservatives aren't conservative. The mainstream, corporate media is not "left-wing;" it supports a very narrow agenda favored by a coaliition of corporate interests and corporate sypathizers embedded in government. Safire even admitted there never has been a left-wing bias in American journalism, but that creating that theme played well to white resentments, regional antagonisms, and anti-intellectualism, and got Nixon and Reagan elected twice. Since then it's grown to cartoonish levels. US media is among the most aggressively pro-Empire and pro- the merger of corporate and government power of any in the world, and the amazing part is, it isn't overtly government-controlled. Still, the levels of support for open Fascism in US "free" media would be the envy of Mussolini, if not He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named under Godwin's Law.
To put much weight into the distinctions between self-described "Liberals" and "Conservatives" is to fall into the trap, and to use binoculars backwards. They may fight each other over spoils, but they're both keen supporters of the merger of corporate and state interests, the military-industrial-governmental complex, the security/surveillance state, and the diversion of public resources for the enrichment of connected private interests, enforced by government legal muscle and state-sanctioned violence.
Frank Luntz, William Safire, James Carville and their ilk have won for now. Americans are so far from real political understanding and debate, words are used to mean other than what they mean, and most of us can't even see true cause and effect in our politics and economy. It'll take a crisis completely outside the scope of what's permitted in our current public discourse to shake us to our senses and get us to focus on reality rather than contrived PR manipulations with a made-up play language.

The world's most dangerous virus is in fact LIBERALISM. We have two parties, Dems and repubs. Dems are 100% liberals and Repubs are 70% liberals. So what we have is fact a one party system when it comes to policies, where the Dems put in place policies are that are onerous and reviled by the masses and the Repubs pretend to be be against it but do nothing to reverse these polices when they are in power. Just watch, if the Repubs win the Senate, nothing will happen to reverse the Dems policies and in fact the Repubs will pass bills on Immigration, spending etc. to insure that they (repubs) stay in control of the MONEY.
The only people fighting for the little people are conservatives and Tea Party and they are being pilloried in the press for that simple reason.
Liberalism has infected the masses. The masses are sold ideas and policies of "good intent" but given that there is no accountability in govt, all the bad outcomes are simply overlooked. What we end up with more and more debt and bad policies until it all collapses under its own weight most probably via deflation.

I have to wonder how much the vast majority here actually knows about Islam? Saudi Arabia has given it a very bad name. But Islam, even in Saudi Arabia has no real central leadership, as such, in a formal recognition. There is no "pope" or bishops to direct the billion+ people who follow it's precepts. The Wahabbi movement cannot be reined in because they have seized power in Saudi, and that relates directly to who controls the money and that money is oil money. The US is pretty much the whore for Saudi as we obtain roughly 17% of our oil from there, as carefully as this idea is avoided.
