Cramer Does It Again: 4 "Irresistible" Stocks

Tyler Durden's picture

Just 7 short weeks ago, no lesser guru of gains than CNBC's Jim Cramer proclaimed for all retail-stock-investing moms-and-pops that "through the end of the year, I am pegging Twitter, GoPro, Tesla and Netflix as the four stocks that investors will find irresistible." Things are not going well...

Via CNBC from September 2nd 2014,

Given circumstances, Cramer sees money rotating out of multinationals, especially those with significant European exposure. Therefore, he's skeptical of big industrial giants as well as many global technology companies.

Cramer believes companies with little to no exposure to the crisis in Ukraine, or the resulting ripple in Europe, are most likely to attract investment.

"Therefore, through the end of the year, I am pegging Twitter, GoPro, Tesla and Netflix as the four stocks that investors will find irresistible," Cramer said.

Not only are they relatively isolated from overseas woes, but Cramer says they each have specific catalysts that should drive gains.

"Twitter's turned the corner ever since CFO Anthony Noto got there to add discipline and ways to make money. GoPro's got an eco-system with the hottest product for the holiday season and we always jump that gun in September. Tesla's just a really well-run company, and unlike the other car companies I follow, it is almost all domestic. And, As more movies are added to streaming and more productions come on line I can see Netflix powering higher."

*  *  *

And then this happened... TWTR -17%, TSLA -18%, NFLX -21%, GPRO +20% (but collapsed from +70%)

*  *  *

Of course Mr.Cramer was not alone in this call...

So ... does that imply there the real money maker is doing the opposite? Anyone ever do a contrarian-Cramer index that buys when he sells and sells when he buys?

Curious what that looks like ...

Many a PHD have been minted on the "Cramer effect", also known as the Newsweek curse and formerly known as the WSJ widowmaker and/or Barons Bust. In short: When your story needs to be sold on national television, you are 1 step away from a Home Shopping network infomercial, and that means your idea if it had any proprietary value in it's core strategy is pretty much "open source" now.

Net/net? If you fade the Cramer calls and get your timing right (2-weeks is the statistical mean), you make about 5% on a call if you pull the Media report and overlay them for the period 1945-2006. For the love of god do not use this as a stock tip to go fade everything on 2-week bear-spreads.

Some products, like retail products are designed for mass adoptions and need that consumer education, but stock valuations are not one of them.

Cramer would be a great show, if he just pulled out the CFA textbook and went through 1-page a day, and did valuation math but on real-companies, for "homegamers". Sadly, that makes PBS level TV. So going buy/sell on charts is all the show runs at/and for. If cramer says something, it's good practice to recheck all the models/assumptions because the 2-day vol. will uptick badly.

I honestly want to know, does Bill Ackman pay CNBC to show up and follow him around? He's like the Taylor Swift of institutional investing. How does he do any work at PSQ if he spends about 3 hours a day doing PR?

Out of curiosity, how much would be made/lost if you sell his recommendations against buying same dollar value on the S&P, putting the trade on at worse of close that day or open next day?

They don't call it the Boob Tube for nothing...

Cramer seems to be the chief financial boob for the last how many years and he's still there in spite of these continued collapses in his predictions.

Whomever is shaping this segment of the collapse seems to be letting Cramer spout the most beneficial financial advice.

We just need to determine who the beneficiary is to all this mumbo jumbo.

Well a hush fell over the NYSE Floor
Jimmy Cramer come boppin' in off the street
And when the cuttin' were done
The only part that wasn't bloody
Was the soles of the big man's feet
Yeah he were cut in in bout a hundred places
And he were shot in a couple more
And you better believe
They sung a different kind of story on CNBC
When big Jim hit the NYSE floor now they say

You don't tug on superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with Yellen…

From his fabled Cramer/Berkowitz, where he was so hated he needed bodygaurds. His wife did all the trading, He was the scumbag that led bear raids with lies to drive stock prices down.

Then who can forget his Top Ten picks for the new millenium? Many sheeple lost their entire investments on that one.

Who can forget his epic Bear Stearns call, the week before they went under?

I cannot imagine anyone taking him serious. The man should be in prison but on CNBC lying is part of the job  desription.
