Tim Cook's decision to openly discuss his sexual orientation is dominating the news cycle with many hoping it can be a watershed moment in the acceptance of openly gay people in the workforce. While it appears nothing but a positive in the United States, there are still stunningly many nations around the world (including Iran, where Apple is trying to sell to now) where Tim Cook's admission is considered "morally unacceptable" by the great majority.

I have nothing at all against gays, but I view homosexuality as a mental defect (their brains are definitely "wired" differently). If this was standard operating procedure amongst our species, we would no longer exist. Pretty hard for Tim Cook to call it a gift. The whole premise of humanity is to procreate and further the species (as is the goal with any animal).
I think it's likely standard operating procedure for some portion of all mammal populations. At least that's what I've gathered from my time spent on family farms.

I do not believe Mr. Cook did this on his own without being pressured to do so, either tacitly or implicitly, and I suspect it was both.
