Reuters has published the result of what is being touted as the Ignorance Index. The one question as an example: “Guess how many U.S. girls aged 15-19 give birth each year. Go ahead, guess. If you calculated the number at 3 percent you’re correct; if you guessed 24 percent, you’re American.”

I rarely watch TV. If I do, it tends to be national news – never local that think a burning house is news or some guy shot his wife in a domestic dispute. I was at dinner and the TV was on. I could not believe the TV advertisements for the elections. They are all NEGATIVE calling the other a liar or misrepresenting the facts on everything. One said the candidate cut the number of police, made the streets more dangerous and then shows a picture of ISIS and then said she raise taxes. Then the very next advertisement flips and calls the other a liar for something or another. There was ZERO advertisement about anything other than vote for me because I lie less that the other liar.

It seems that the Ignorant Index may be more tied to the bias and lack of integrity of the media. They focus on sensationalism to gain readership and in the process focus of one thing and create false images in the minds of the average person.

A classic issue is immigration and Muslims. Americans, according to the Ignorant Index, “significantly miss the mark on the proportion of the population that is comprised of immigrants, guessing 32 percent against the true number of 13 percent. Americans also overestimate the number of Muslims in the population, 15 percent versus only 1 percent in reality, and underestimate the number of Christians, 56 percent to 78 percent. ”

It seems as if the problem is not that Americans are ignorant, they are being fed nonsense by the media to sell newspaper and TV advertising. We have fallen into a cycle of Yellow Journalism that was begun by Pulitzer. It was Pulitzer for created the Spanish-American War by making up shit to sell newspapers. The famous Pulitzer Prize given by Columbia University is named after the father of Yellow Journalism – go figure!

One good place to start is OUTLAW negative advertising. COMPEL political candidates to state what they stand for rather than calling their opponent a liar. Then if they do not vote for what they profess and knuckle under to party rule, that should be FRAUD and time for a vacation in the “Big House” (Penitentiary named after a place you were supposed to be silent and do penance).. We seem to elect people for no reason and then wonder why nothing changes. Obama’s vote for me for real change has been a joke – he kept the same people Bush had in place. This is why polls place politicians at 7% trust factors. The days of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Maggie Thatcher who at least stood for what they believed in regardless of what people thought, are over. They were at least ethical.

At what point does revolution take place? It does not appear to be a percentage in our review of history, but the economic trend. In other words, turn the economy down and the percent of discontent rises exponentially. So beware – not ghosts and goblins, but politicians 2015.75-2020. So perhaps Americans will wise up only when the economy turns down and the Internet provides a greater proportion of real news compared to mainstream media. Indeed, the younger generation under 40 rely on the internet and those who subscribe to newspapers or watch the TV news are diminishing rapidly. This in itself will be a dynamic shift that restores freedom of the press and only then perhaps we will see Americans rise in the Ignorance Index.

I just realized something about this total piece of shit article, and the "Ignorance Survey" it cites. Here are the questions the survey asks:

What Percentage of Girls Age 15-19 Give Birth Each Year?
What Percentage of People Are Muslim?
What Percentage of People Are Christian?
What Percentage of People Are Immigrants?
What Percentage of People Voted in the Last Major Election?
What Percentage of People Are Unemployed and Looking For Work?
What Is the Life Expectancy of a Child Born in 2014?

Sorry, but I'm going to force you to think. What is the common characteristic of these questions. They are almost all about demographics.

Authoritarian Progressives prime focus is identity politics: White vs black, men vs women, Rich vs poor, etc. Therefore, Progressives immerse themselves in demographics.

What is an alternate descriptions for the "Ignorance Index", then? A "Progressive Index". Thank God the US is 2nd on the Progressive index. Since Progressives are total fucking pieces of shit, it shows we still have hope in this country that we haven't succumbed to Progressivism.

I like the amalgam of Authoritarian and Progressive and its implications for those ar the other end of the fulcrum : Anarchist and Regressive. 

So in this binary type of reasoning all progressives are authoritarian and all conservatives (or regressives, as immobility means you move backwards relative to others) are anarchists... and love to maximise entropy. 

Maximise entropy in an "every man for himself" Ayn Randish world and wadhya get for the 99% ?  : another day older and deeper in debt!

Good question : how will History typify the US century since 1900. 

Lets put it this way : the US was created on the basis of an ideal inherited from the Enlightenment. An extraordinarly provocative ideal-- life, liberty and "pursuit of happiness"-- to say the least. No divine rights of kings !

Since 1900, under the impulse of unfettered capitalism and industrial revolution; thanks to a nation the size of a continent, where all indigenous population has been "cleasened out"; where slave labour imported from Africa has planted the seeds of cotton and tobacco agriculture; the Greatest Nation on earth lost its soul in the pursuit of Greed, fed on the "sky is the limit and we be exceptional" hubristic meme. (Whence the birth of a middle class in that process based on Lincoln's Gettysberg speech heralding an age of free men under DEMOCRACY).

Not saying that the implosion of the European model, from 1914 to 1945, as in Japan, did not fuel that US hubris of "exceptionalism", as evident saviors of the modern world.

But becoming top dog of Universe, like Charles V of spanish Habsburgs, had the same effect on the US elites : they shoved their ideals down the toilet! 

And this disease has now been spread to the rest of the world, just like it did during the religious wars of the Habsburgs.

We are into a paradigm invented in Capitalist/industrial USA which is now hitting an asymptote. And no amount of "more of the same" is gonna resolve that issue.

We need a new paradigm and its not the one promoted by Pax Americana. 

And its not the vision of the Ayn Rand meme so prevalent as a cherished Miserly dogma here on the Hedge. 

Think back to the origins of western civilization and you may find a better answer. 

History repeats.

The unbridled Progressive attack on the concept of "American exceptionalism" compares to any of our military's "Shock and Awe" attacks post-911. Yes, I'm congratulating Progressives for their "No quarter" attacks on the US.

I read your linked article. Sorry, but it failed to move me viscerally, and appealed not at all cerebrally. It seemed more a mish-mash of disconnected quanta of historical facts and weak tea than a reasoned essay.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness

The finest words ever written.

Progressives deplore American exceptionalism. Even though the reverse is not true, imo, if we poll all those who deplore American exceptionalism, I think the majority would call themselves Progressives.

What do Progressives (eg, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, FDR, Obama) want? A gov't run by experts; ie, some super bureaucrat like Obama appoints experts to gov't, and these experts make all the decisions.

Goodbye, our Republic. Goodbye, our Democracy. The reason that the USA is exceptional is our committment to the above-cited phrase from the D of I. When the US stops paying fealty to those sentiments, it certainly isn't exceptional. If the US is transformed into a Progressive Wet Dream, it will become exactly the same as all other dictatorships and tyrannies which have existed throughout history.

To Progressives, it's self-fulfilling: "American is not exceptional because we'll do every fucking thing we can to make sure the US in not exceptional!!"

Good read of the situation!  NOT being the king of the world is hard to swallow.  As is to have no more land to pillage.  We are in the midst (start?) of the great worldwide equalisation, where western civilsation, that plundered the riches of many others over the years is in the decline, and many others are on the rise.  

I can only imagine the reaction of those less "fortunate" around the world to watching American media entertainment and wondering just where do Americans get the riches presented on the tube and in movies.  Well it was somewhat (a lot?) on the back of others, and they want it too!  

So as China's middle class develops, as does India's, the USA declines.  Limited resources are a bitch.

I totally agree a new paradigm is required.  Getting there is a different story as all the different people' in the world's timelines are different.  Perhaps one day, and likely not in my lifetime, the world will become one (and no - I am not talking about NWO).  Why is it that the Nordic countries seem to be much more able to have relatively stable, socialist leaning economies and still are able to welcome refugees.

Yes, I also agree the Ayn Rand paradigm is not going to help us progress.  But when we are used to being Kings, it is difficult to change - and we would like to go back to the "good old days".  Those days are gone.

On  more personal level, I have realised (finally at 58) that happiness does not come from "stuff" and riches.  In fact, the weathiest friend I had over the years, who was a very successful institutional commodities broker and had to leave Canada quickly as the tax men (federal and provincial), were after him.  He bought a renovated chateau in France, had a cook and groundskeeper, and died alone, and without love.

I have shed an awful lot of stuff, married 3 years ago, work at a job that is interesting enough (but at less money than years ago), have bought a little hours in the 'burbs, and am happier than I have ever been.  The "west" and especially a lot of Americans need to seriously reevaluate what birngs happiness.  And it is not being Kings of the World.

While I always listen attentively to what you have to say, in this case I'm afraid that the America we knew is no more.  In days past we could be certain that Americans would only take so much, but 50 years of brainwashing has created two generations of kids that actually think that collectivism is not a bad thing.

The powers-that-be have won that battle just as they won the battle to take over our courts.  I'm no longer sure that there's a way out.  The only logical method to reassert out Constitution is for States to stand up and say, "enough!", and nullify all the unauthorized fed govt crap.  But States don't seem to have the balls anymore.

All we have left is our guns and Bibles, and they're not much competition for DHS with billions of rounds of ammo waiting for us.

People don’t want this system to collapse.

I’m in this subdivision.  There is a retarded kid who lives across from my house.

Every morning I watch the retard get loaded into the school bus by the driver, a 15-minute exercise.  I guess it takes 15 minutes to unload at school and another 15 minutes to reload and then another 15 minutes to unload back at home after school.  About an hour in just transport. 

The bus driver is handling ‘special needs’ and is probably certified to handle these types. The average bus driver in this area earns $600.00 a week, special needs is probably more. 

Parallel to this, everyone in this subdivision pays county taxes for winter snow removal.  However, the snow does not get removed.  Each household in this subdivision must pay an additional $40.00 annually to a makeshift HOA for snow removal.  The ‘taxation without representation’ is accepted. 

Every weekday morning I witness the retard across the street consuming our snow removal resources. The parents of the retard have off-loaded their responsibility onto the community.   I started to describe this scenario to one of the other members in this community.   Whoa! I will not do that again.

I hear ya pookie. There are so many that do not seem to understand that resources are being consumed at an unprecedented and increasingly unsustainable level. Healthcare, education, you name it. If granny never worked a day in her life, how can she get new knees every 10 years, cataract surgery, 15 prescription meds, hearing aids, etc.

Something has to give. Less and less people work and more and more pile onto the wagon of freebies. My wife is a nurse and has some stories. There is a retarded woman who comes in every few months. She will swallow a rock or a bolt or a pencil trying to kill herself. She is one of many regulars that consist of drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. who are spending the nation's future labor and wealth.

I discovered that the school system had employed a full-time teacher exclusively to instruct one Hispanic student, newly arrived, because he did not speak English.

Needless to say, I crossed Jackson Hole off my list of prospects.

Of course they are retarded!  I've found the mildly retarded people, to be some of the best people I know.  At our large plant , we use a community organized group of them to supplement our janitorial staff.  They are moved around as a group, performing their tasks in an area and whenever I run into them, they are so enthusiastic with their greetings.  They shout Hello and Good Mornings and I am caught up, and respond likewise.  It makes my day.

After work, my buddy and I have a shop in an industrial center, where we work on vintage cars and there's a young black man, about 35, who is mildly retarded.  Mike lives across the street and his entertainment is going around to the shops,and seeing what's going on.  He loves old cars, fast cars and people in General and all of us at the industrial center enjoy his excitedness and rampant enthusiasm for our crafts!  He loves seeing a burn out and he'll hoot and holler, heck, I've given him rides (as others have) in my '74 Corvette Stingray and he'll. Be in the passenger seat, expertly imitating the clutch and gear shifting action and just loving the experience!

I think the best part of retarded people, is their innocence, their carefree outlook and as mentioned, their enthusiasm.  I like retarded people.

Long ago, the culture was a generic, diluted Protestantism, one big enough for Catholicism, Jews and atheists, as long as Protestants remained in the forefront.  Everyone shared, or at least understood, the dominant values.  Dissent was allowed, as long as it was quiet, or closeted.

This in itself will be a dynamic shift that restores freedom of the press and only then perhaps we will see Americans rise in the Ignorance Index. And what percent of those under 40 are going to internet sites such as Huffpost? My nieces and nephews, most in their 20's have no clue. Mostly because they've been indoctrinated in school.  4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.

We call it government seizures, tax liens, "forfeiture" Public "law" 99-570 (1986); Executive order 11490, sections 1205, 2002 which gives private land to the Department of Urban Development; the imprisonment of "terrorists" and those who speak out or write against the "government" (1997 Crime/Terrorist Bill); or the IRS confiscation of property without due process.


 

 

 5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.

The Federal Reserve System, created by the Federal Reserve Act of Congress in 1913, is indeed such a "national bank" and it politically manipulates interest rates and holds a monopoly on legal counterfeiting in the United States.   This is exactly what Marx had in mind and completely fulfills this plank, another major socialist objective.   Yet, most Americans naively believe the U.S. of A. is far from a Marxist or socialist nation.


 

 

6. Centralization of the means of communication and transportation in the hands of the state.

In the U.S., communication and transportation are controlled and regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established by the Communications Act of 1934 and the Department of Transportation and the Interstate Commerce Commission (established by Congress in 1887), and the Federal Aviation Administration as well as Executive orders 11490, 10999 -- not to mention various state bureaucracies and regulations. There is also the federal postal monopoly, AMTRAK and CONRAIL -- outright socialist (government-owned) enterprises.   Instead of free-market private enteprrise in these important industries, these fields in America are semi-cartelized through the government's regulatory-industiral complex.


 

 

7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.

While the U.S. does not have vast "collective farms" (which failed so miserably in the Soviet Union), we nevertheless do have a significant degree of government involvement in agriculture in the form of price support subsidies and acreage alotments and land-use controls.   The Desert Entry Act and The Department of Agriculture. As well as the Department of Commerce and Labor, Department of Interior, the Evironmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Mines, National Park Service, and the IRS control of business through corporate regulations.


 

 

 8. Equal obligation of all to work.  Establishment of Industrial armies, especially for agriculture.

We call it the Social Security Administration and The Department of Labor. The National debt and inflation caused by the communal bank has caused the need for a two "income" family. Woman in the workplace since the 1920's, the 19th amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, assorted Socialist Unions, affirmative action, the Federal Public Works Program and of course Executive order 11000. And I almost forgot...The Equal Rights Amendment means that women should do all work that men do including the military and since passage it would make women subject to the draft.


 

 

 9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.

We call it the Planning Reorganization Act of 1949 , zoning (Title 17 1910-1990) and Super Corporate Farms, as well as Executive orders 11647, 11731 (ten regions) and Public "law" 89-136.


 

 

10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. etc.

People are being taxed to support what we call 'public' schools, which train the young to work for the communal debt system. We also call it the Department of Education, the NEA and Outcome Based "Education" .

Do you tell people or not, if you do nobodys going to do any real work, companies go broke, and then the asteroid misses. If the people are not told, it doesn't matter if it hits or misses.

Same here for the US Finaicial System. So being Irresponsible is only true if it's 100% certain and other number and there is chance it may not happen. In both cases it can only be 100% certain hours before it actually hits.

Armstrong, although he sounds a little whacky from time to time, is generally on the right track, and you Aquarian, are partially correct.  At least about the voting part.  I stay home and let Diebold do the voting for me.  Like, if I actually went to vote, Diebold will still do the voting for me, so why go?  It's a waste of time.  Besides, all there is to vote for is a choice of 2 politicians/liars vetted by TPTB.  No choice there.

As for TV news, Armstrong is right.  I stopped watching the National Industrial Strength Propaganda Networks (NISP-TV) a long time ago.  100% of my news is from different sources on the net (I'm 56 y.o., BTW, so Armstrong's range of ages is wrong about me, so he should do a little more homework).

Does DHS have better guns than we do?  Yep!  But we outnumber them by millions.  DHS may be able to push us around a little, but as for control, forget it.  Like ISIS, we'll pick the superior weapons from their cold dead hands should the time ever come.  So, you should do a little more homework Aquarian.

We all agree that a bad time is coming, due to an economic catastrophy.  Call it Judgement Day, or just call it a good day for the majority to wake up and smell the coffee, it doesn't matter.  After that bad time, things will get better, they always do.  Central Banks won't exist, the new owners of Goldman Sachs and JPM will be walking that fine line as the old owners are hanging from lamp posts, and politicians will actually fear the people.  Public schools will only exist locally, and hopefully the United States will consist of a confederation of 1000's of City-States, each responsible for themselves and their future.  We may all chip in, for interesting US projects like NASA and other scientific agencies that use our money (gold/silver) wisely.  Welfare will be left in the perview of the the churches and community organizations which will only care for the truely needy.  As for the rest, it'll be almost biblical...if thou shall not work, thou shall not eat.

I could ask for your vote, aquarian, but I don't want the job.  I'm happy designing I&C Systems, so I'll stick with that.  As for the gist of your comment, I believe you to be a pessimist.  I'm an optimist, waiting for the time of change.

Unfortunately I think America is physically too big for a revolution. The only thing I can imagine working in the US is local secession - on an individual, small group and hopefully political basis - which if it spreads enough might bring the old order down but which even if it doesn't might provide a refuge from the flood. If it works the individually seceded chunks could get back together again after.

Progressivism is Authoritarianism. I would be JUBILANT if civil war broke out in the USA between the socialist parasites & the earners that the parasites feed upon. Then we earners could cleanse America of the vermin hordes of aliens & entitlement tit-sucking parasites & thieves.

Very disappointed that it has not happened yet.

Wondered why not. So I made an intensive study of the USA Civil War from the perspective of ordinary people, from diaries, letters, etc, to find out what finally made them willing to go kinetic, and I made an interesting discovery:

While there are always practical headline reasons or justifications for the outbreak of civil war, eg ending slavery, preserving the union, etc, the actual commitment by individuals to taking up arms in live fire civil war CANNOT occur unless and until the two major factions have built up intense unreconcilable unbearable burning HATRED of each other, ie they need to go FULL emotional.

Genuine Americans, especially the earners, the productive, the creators, the entrepreneurs, have not been insulted, robbed, ignored, subordinated, lied to, cheated, betrayed, invaded and over-voted enough yet for these pussies to get emotional enough to go kinetic.

When the "Tea Party" first emerged, I was hopeful that they were going to be the "verbs" that got the revolution hot, but they were usurped by loonies & religious fascists and have become mostly about acting as the american christian taliban, turning people off rather than on.

I am hoping that the inevitable hillary witch bitch in the White House will finally tip the scale.
