Symbolic "Arbeit Macht Frei" Gate Stolen From Dachau
If "work set you free" in the Nazi concentration camps of WWII, then it appears in this consequence-less society in which we live, stealing is the new normal. As CBS reports, 5 years after a Swedish neo-Nazi was found gulity of stealing the symbolic concentration camp sign from Auschwitz; a wrought-iron gate bearing the Nazis' cynical slogan "Arbeit macht frei," or "Work sets you free," has been stolen from the former Dachau concentration camp, police said Sunday. "The theft of such a symbolic object is an offensive attack on the memory of the Holocaust," said Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.
Security officials noticed early Sunday morning that the gate measuring 75 by 37 inches -- set into a larger iron gate -- was missing, police said in a statement. Whoever stole it during the night would have had to climb over another gate to reach it, they added.
Police said they found nothing in the immediate vicinity of the camp and appealed for anyone who noticed any suspicious people or vehicles to come forward.
Dachau, near Munich, was the first concentration camp set up by the Nazis in 1933. More than 200,000 people from across Europe were held there and over 40,000 prisoners died before it was liberated by U.S. forces on April 29, 1945. The camp is now a memorial.
Memorial director Gabriele Hammermann condemned the theft of the gate, which she described as "the central symbol for the prisoners' ordeal," news agency dpa reported.
She said a private security service supervises the site but officials had decided against surveillance of the former camp with video cameras because they didn't want to turn it into a "maximum-security unit." That decision may now have to be reviewed, she added.
A blog posted by Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial wrote that "while we do not know who is behind the theft of the sign, the theft of such a symbolic object is an offensive attack on the memory of the Holocaust."
In December 2009, the infamous "Arbeit macht frei" sign that spanned the main gate of the Auschwitz death camp, built by the Nazis in occupied Poland, was stolen. Police found it three days later cut into pieces in a forest on the other side of Poland.
A Swedish man who had a neo-Nazi past was found guilty of instigating that theft and jailed in his homeland. Five Poles also were convicted of involvement and imprisoned.

Imagine the sickening irony if Hitler was actually right. The universe has a habit of pulling stunts like this on the hapless human. Just imagine though that jews being jews and their propensity to look out for only jews, do business with only jews, marry only other jews (not very civic really, is it?), imagine if fate would have it that they do get into positions of absolute power. Then yes, we might just be on the losing end of that bet. If you frame the above thoughts irrespective of jews, just any ethnic group then the question becomes, am I right. Would it be advisable to put some checks and balances on what positions of power this group holds knowing that when a certain critical mass is reached things might turn ugly for those who are not part of that ethnic group. Then the next question is, do jews fit the description? There's no clear cut answer either, we can only talk in statistical terms which makes these trains of thought very difficult for people to process. There's plenty of jews who just want to live and let live and who would be indistinguishable from anyone else, in belief, attitude, compassion.
Look at Sunni's and Shiites in Iraq, pretty sure the Shiites thought they were getting the short end of the stick for a while. Look at Hutu's and Tutsi's, sure the Hutu's thought they were getting the short end of the stick until they took tragic counter-measures. I think we're talking basic human nature that groups/tribes of people try to protect their own. While the western world has to some extent moved on from this (TO SOME EXTENT I SAID) I suspect the jews are still bringing a somewhat primitive attitude from a mid east civilisation still locked in the dark ages. Maybe this is all it boils down to. Arabs are still pretty much stuck in the mid east so we don't really give a shit about their tribal allegiances. I visited Dachau in 2003, it was one of the worst places I have ever seen or been. It is hard to imagine what went on there. I cannot imagine the experience at the true death camps like Auschwitz.

My Father was a machine gunner with the 42nd Infantry Division and part of the forces that first entered the camp in 1945. I have his first ahdn accounts of what they found.
In 1947, with a pregnant wife and little work in rural South GA, he re-enlisted and moved on the Quatermaster Corp from Infantry. In 1949, he was transferred to Dachau as a part of the re-construction efforts, where they trraded in scrap metals, opened laundries and sewing factories, and a number of other tasks. I started school there, and our German Housekeeper from there visited us in the US several times, as recently as 1991. We later spent 2 more tours of duty in Germany, and I started college there, too. There have been many discussions in our household with people who lived through the war and experienced it first hand - both German Nationals and Americans. I am not Jewish, not a banker, not wealthy, and not stupid. What happened in these death camps is not fiction. End of story.

More than 188,000 prisoners passed through the heavy gates of Dachau in its 12-year history. Although 28,000 were known to have died, there were many, many more victims who have never been accounted for.

On my first visit to a concentration camp, which actually was Dachau, as it happens, I felt weak at the horror. It was many many years before I came to realize that whole experience was a well-crafted performance designed with two main objectives: Fleece the Germans for reparations and to render Jews generally immune to criticism.
