Broke, Living In A Basement, With "Negative Savings": This Is What Millennials Spend Their Money On

Tyler Durden's picture

When work is punished, homes are unaffordable, the American Dream is over, Milennials are burning through their assets or going into debt to survive... So just what is it that they are spending their hard-signed-up-for-benefits money on? We have the answer: Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the freemium app in which you climb up to the A-list next to Kim Kardashian, made $43.4 million in Q3.

As Vulture.com reports,

She hasn't hit the projected $200 million just yet (and might not), but Glu Games just announced that Kim K's iPhone game, Kim Kardashian Hollywood, took in $43.4 million in Q3.

According to the earnings call, the infamous game has been downloaded almost 23 million times and played for almost 6 billion minutes.

*  *  *

Is it any wonder, with all this 'game-playing' the average American needs to spend less time working and more time sleeping...

Distract, distract, distract...

The reason why Millenials are stuck at home playing video games all day is what else can they do?

No one wants to hire them. The few businesses that do offer $8 an hour at 20 something hours a week. Then that paycheck is obliterated by withholdings, so what little is left can only afford 99 cent apps.

With these dead end jobs, they can't afford to travel anywhere.

They take up some hobby, but hobbies cost a lot of money, that they don't have.

They can't get involved in church, because the churches are all scams where half the sermon is about raising funds for the rotting building, meanwhile, the pastor rolls up in a brand new $70,000 car with his oxymoronic NOTW bumper sticker on it.

They try to start a club, but 80% of the time is dealing with corporate and government red tape, instead of actually meeting up and having fun.

They get involved in politics, but get stonewalled because as that Princeton study revealed, the US is an oligarchy and grassroots efforts has ZERO effect on policy.

They are brain damaged from 12 years of public school brainwashing, so they have to "unlearn" all of the lies they were told.

Their Xer parents are at work all day and used the TV to raise them.

Their boomer grandparents only talk about their last doctor's visit and what meds they are on. The only positivity their grandfolks have is that they gambled away their retirement at the Indian casino slot machines like pigeons pecking a button in a Skinner Box.  So much for the "wise elders" that traditionally helped humanity.  They are all heavily medicated, immersed in their own matrix, then eventually warehoused away.

Tyler Durden summed up the millenials and especially the Xers correctly:

Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

Sensationalist graph at the end, in terms of the #hrs and time scale. In the shown period, the average went from 8.70 hours at the beginning to 8.575 hours at the end. That is a delta of 7.5 minutes. Sure, I can make a 1 minute delta look like a fucking mountain, if I zoom in far enough. The delta in sleep is 18 minutes.

Compare that to farcebook, twatter, and the jillion other social thingies that actually take up the majority of work hours.

HH,

you're a terrible, awful, horrible and patently wicked human being (and i love you for it)...looks like somebody forgot to check their white/male/Christian privilege at the door.  what kind of children are you raising, HH?  i mean to say, something is fundamentally wrong with you if you're not instructing them to loathe everything they are.   white-middle-class-Christian is the most menacing force ever unleashed on planet earth; and so the responsible parent should do everything in their power to invest in their children a deep and abiding insecurity for it. shame on you, HH!  i'll take it a step further, double-shame for procreating.  it's bad enough that we exist in the first place, but it's inexcusable to breed more of us into the earth.  face the facts, HH: we're evil, and there's nothing you can do to change it.

well, looks like 'someone' is once again playing nasty tricks on janus...i can't type due to this ridiculous delay...brand spankin new computer and 'someone' can't resist the temptation to monitor my every key-stroke.  listen up, langley faggots -- janus knows your envy and its resultant enmity...i told you worthless cunts when i started that you couldn't do a goddam thing to stop me, and i've proven it.  now, go and monkey around destabilizing some backwater nation of mongrels and quit lusting...

anyway, with respect to the race issue, i came across something not long ago that radically reshaped my understanding of it...i've now concluded that all peoples (broadly defined) should have their own place.  there are in this life natural and inevitable disequilibriums that result from human interaction; and since we've devoted ourselves to this fatuous inanity of 'equality', there is therefore the imperative to neutralize those disequilibriums thorough social engineering and the law itself.  certainly, on its face this balderdash appeals to people's sense of decency...but it's a horrid and disgusting lie.

here, let me share the clip from youtube:

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkpUyB2xgTM

i literally wept when i first saw this...and so, commies & central planners, are you proud of your 'accomplishments'?  in an effort to promote equality, you've consigned an entire race to understand themselves as inferior and wicked.  nice.

i really-really-really hate you central planners and 'equalizers'.  you are the bane black-america's self-esteem; and so the next iteration of your strategy is to immolate the soul of whites?  i guess you thought janus was speaking hyperbolically when i said you're going to be lined-up and executed...i wasn't.  there can be no peace or happiness in the world with you in it.

say yer prayers, swine.

janus

When will some creative programmer make the games we really want to see?

Make THESE:

  • Sniper: Kardashian Hunt
  • Grand Theft Federal Reserve
  • Call of Duty: Defend the Constitution
  • World of Warcraft: Fall of the Oligarchs
  • Resident Evil: Democrats vs. Republicans
  • Assassin's Creed Honey Boo-boo <-- OK, that's a bit over the top. I apologize.
  • Minecraft: Wood Chippers and Politicians

Spot on Paveway! The sniper game should include the ability to work up and test custom load data, and test fire each, with all of the real-life data input, including barrel length & twist, all powder, primer, and bullet combos, etc...

I love your games, I really do, if I played I would want most of the live action versions not the virtual ones. However, I do see issues:

  • Sniper: Kardashian Hunt; Too easy, the whole lot of them would be blown away in no time. No challenge if it is realistic at all.
  • Grand Theft Federal Reserve; too complicated, most folks just won't understand. And if they do, they will go insane, kinda like us.
  • Call of Duty: Defend the Constitution; again, they have to understand the implications of the Constitution to know how to defend it.
  • World of Warcraft: Fall of the Oligarchs; they are too well hidden and defended. What fun is the game when you are not even sure if the one's you see are the real targets?
  • Resident Evil: Democrats vs. Republicans; I'll play this one if you let me be a libertarian with a grenade launcher and a Barret 50 cal.
  • Assassin's Creed Honey Boo-boo <-- OK, that's a bit over the top. I apologize. I'll play this if you let me go after Mom and her child molesting boyfriend. This is your best game idea, let's make this happen. These people are dumb enough to help us advertise it. We can base the game on the new reality TV series. It can be on The Learning Channel too.
  • Minecraft: Wood Chippers and Politicians; okay. This one is clear.

I suggested two:

  • Inflation is a hidden form of taxation
  • Civil Forfeiture Laws

I gave her several links to some great articles here on the hedge.

She said she didnt have time to read those.

I told her if she cant dedicate the time to read and understand a few well laid out articles, she deserves to fail the assignment.

Now get back to pecking on your iPhone.

This is true. A daughter's boy friend, staying over with us in the country, plugged my bathtub drain and then broke the drain lever. He said he'de pay for the plumber as he felt bad about breaking the mechanism. I said, give me a minute, stripped it all down to parts, replaced the broken bit and put it back together. Then snaked out the drain pipe as it had already been slow for awhile. I think kids don't know anything because they have no man in their lives to show them the simple fixes. Note, his father is divorced from his Mom, she spoils and babies him. It shows! Also, I taught the kid how to shoot a pistol and my shoot gun. My daughter and I practice shoot every few weeks, he was shocked to be learning to shoot in front of a girl who had done it for years! Again, the boy has no father, just an overbearing mother who spoils him. The kid also lacks respect for adult men, nobody ever taught him respect. This is America, the nation women wanted so bad to be like this.

Don't assume all those millenials are living in their parents basements, playing the Kardashian game and working part-time at Mickey D's. A lot ARE, but a lot more are more independant than that. If they ARE living in the basement, they are very likely to be working-perhaps off the books-and contributing to Mom and Dad.

In 'Boomer-day', a career, home, family, were the foundations of what we called 'Life'. Millenials are more mobile, nomadic even. The 30-year career of our youth no longer exists, and most millenials will become serial-employees. There is reluctance among them to start families, which means no demand for mortgages. So the three things WE considered so important don't have the same meaning to millenials.

They are adjusting to the New Normal, that's all. They aren't being 'lazy', or acting 'entitled', they are merely looking out at their world and figuring out how best to navigate it. Just like WE did to the world WE looked out at when we were their age. But those worlds are very, very different, and we shouldn't be surprised if they make very different choices than we did. The 'serial employee' who changes jobs every year may, to US, seem flighty and irresponsible, but he may in fact be doing the best he can in today's world. And the reluctance to settle down and be good little suburbanite homeowners may not be a sign of refusing to 'grow up'. It may be a practical decision NOT to get entangled with the kind of burdens and grief his parents had.

I partially agree with your assessment.  A lot of youth 13-16 don't even want a car.  It's too much of an expense.  Family?  No thanks.  But we cannot simply deduct that they are just trying to navigate differenr waters.  That generatin was over-indulged and this behavior is a tribute to that as well lower prospect of financial autonomy.

very fair comment - they are trying to survive in a difficult environment - but they also have more inclusive group of friends outside their families  than the boomers - so they dont need to create a family

"Friends are the family you choose for yourself."

Bravo. Good to see someone at least 'gets it'.

While there is probably a higher percentage of shit heads than generations past, most of us are adjusting to the new normal… we did not get to be in on that massive home equity explosion fueling the economy since the early 2000's; for us, housing looks unattractive, even in spite of some of us making it into a 6 figure income by now…

Jobs are more fleeting by their very nature now. Most companies are so obsessed with the bottom line that they are happy to let skilled employees go to the competition rather than stump up some extra coin to retain you. By being nomadic and mobile I have managed to double my income by seeking out companies that want to expand production without big capex into new facilities. The harder I work, the more I make, and the more they make.

It ain't pretty, but it's the hand we were dealt, and most of us are doing the best we can with it.

Tell me about it. Worked for a technology company that was literally destroyed by this. And by short term executives buying back shares to skew the value of their options. Totally disgraceful and as far as I know there were no personal repercussions for them.

The young have been dealt a deck of cards. It is not the same hand we who are over 50 were dealt. Our was better in many ways, and much worse in others. But we had so much more career potential than todays kids. Nobody I knew as a youth, who were motivated to learn and work, ever failed to make a good life and good living. It was there for anyone willing to work for it. I know that we can't say that today!

35 years ago I found myself returning home to start over. Stupidly I chose to major in a subject which provided no work for a BS degree. My parents made it hell. I re-tooled - I worked during the day and took MS classes in CS at night to the point I could get an entry level programming job.  That change afforded me years of great pay/opportunity. What do these kids today have to build upon ? Social media ? That's like saying you are good at watching movies/playing games. We have a whole generation that has contributed very little. Where is the innovation ?

We have an entire political system that seems to hate what Amerika used to stand for.  I used to be a sr. software engineer till I was forced to train my little foreign national replacements and they sent my job over there.  I was able to shift over into a different career but it was a close call ... good luck dude.

The earlier post on here about my generation was terrible to read. I find myself asking "How do this people my age either flat bum broke or own new house, car, kids, and vacations constantly?" Well 90% either live outside their means in credit realm, parents foot bill, or luck. Almost 100% out of personal / school debt (done in Feb. 2015 completely), I rent and buy very little and try to save all I can. Yet I can not even fathom purchasing a house, car, vacation, etc. It's just mind blowing my generation is either at home or in their over priced unaffordable about to lose it home.

Stupidly obvious question: Where is the incentive for young people to do anything else?

They can go to school, work hard, get good grades, get out and get two minimum wage jobs while wistfully eyeing 3/4 of a million dollar dilapidated shacks instead? Fuck that.

Young people know the shit sandwich they've been handed and while they still have to eat it, fuck actually helping society prepare it for them.

My kids took me to their favorite scenic spots in the Rockies that are accessible by car because I have a gamey leg and I was appalled at the piles of junk scattered around the empty trash cans.

I made a joke about the stoners can't even hit the trash cans and they told me it was the stoners who came and picked the places up after the beer drinking farmer rednecks trashed it.

Ah, get ready guys, what you will see over the next few years will turn the heart to stone, or break it into a thousand pieces.

Some 20 years ago I attended a piano/pot-luck for my daughter.  After the recital, I fell into a conversation with the husband of the piano teacher.  He had just retired from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, family services department.  He reported that, at the time of his retirement, there were 600,000 open cases pertaining to child support in LA county.

I estimated that this represented 1 in 3 child-raising families in the county; that a ratio of 1 in 20 was a disaster.  If this is so, what kind of disaster is 1 in 3?

A few months later, I called the DA’s office for Orange County for the same info.  The woman who answered said, ‘Just a minute”.  She returned and said, “105,000”.  By my estimate: that was 1 in 6 child-raising families in the county.

I asked, “Why?”  The retired lawyer blamed it on the apathy of the large immigrant population of LA county.  The woman from the OC office, ‘we are restricted in what we can do by due process procedures.’

It is kind of odd: strict due process for behavior that ruins lives; and pure inquisitorial procedures for someone who offers an alternative to a system that financially cannibalizes children.

Just think, between ratios of LA and Orange counties, what should be expect on a nation wide scale… 1 in 4… 1 in 5 families?

It all comes down to the verdict of history proven over and over, ‘Taxes and regulations are always laid on the weakest members of society.’

If you call your local DA's office for the same info, leave the answer as a REPLY.

It's not just the fact that the houses costs six figures, or the jobs just aren't there unless you're doing the boss or letting them do you, land is expensive, the building codes are bubble boy overkill and the financing rules say unless you already have the money, you can't get the money.

So what's a kid to do?    Well, start learning skills with your hands.    Learn how to make shit instead of buying it.   Learn how to sew, boys and girls both.    It will serve you well in combat and in clothing.    Figure out what you really need and find a sucker for the rest.    Make personal connections, they'll mean more than facebook likes.    Force yourself to meet people and learn how to tell the crap from the honest.

School of Hard Knocks.   Coming to all of these kids before they know it.    But the rich won't care as long as theres slaves to clean thier sewers, mow their grass and pump their pool.    The rest of us need to worry about simplier lives and learn how to aim well and shoot straight.
