O'Bummer was a bit weird in terms of chewing gum on international
television, but O'Bummer is a hip dude and he happens to be the President
of the USA. I thought it showed a certain degree of low class upbringing
somewhere along the line. Clearly, the USA and China are at odds and perhaps O'Bummer was attempting to look cool and relaxed as he mugged for the camera lens? Posturing was what O'Bummer was hired for so it may be that he was told to chew gum and act like a punker, we don't really know. Very interesting two-step at this Apec meeting. Your President was sidelined, but then sat comfortably with the host Premier Xi at the other ritual events. Yes, he was not given face in one photo event and the Chinese press made much about the gum (having a laugh).
However, a bigger and more serious faux pas was when Mr Putin laid his hands on Mrs Xi to give her a blanket. She let it fall and her aids gave her a coat. The Weibo etc went wild with comments, after all he divorced his wife and is now single. The censors scubbed any mention of this or photos of this break in protocal and the prevailing ethics.
