ISIS, Al-Qaeda Join The M&A Bubble, Agree To Fight "Common Foes" Together In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Following al-Baghdadi's threats this morning, and General Dempsey's warnings, it appears things are escalating once again in The Middle East:

  • *ISIS, AL-QAEDA AFFILIATE AGREE TO FIGHT TOGETHER IN SYRIA: AP

As AP reports, the deal could be a heavy blow to Washington's strategy against the
Islamic State group
, relying on arming moderate rebel factions to push
back extremists in Syria. It appears The West is "gonna need a bigger coalition."

As AP reports,

Two Syrian opposition figures say the Islamic State group and al-Qaida's branch met last week and agreed to stop fighting each other and work together against their opponents.

The deal could be a heavy blow to Washington's strategy against the Islamic State group, relying on arming moderate rebel factions to push back extremists in Syria.

A prominent Syrian opposition official and a rebel commander say delegates from the two groups met in secret on Nov. 2 in northern Syria and agreed to end months of fighting between them and cooperate on the ground. The two spoke on condition their names not be used for their own protection or because they were not authorized to release the information.

The accord stops short of a merger between the two.

As The Daily Beast reports, this has been looming...

Jihadi veterans known collectively as the Khorasan group, which have been targeted in two waves of airstrikes by U.S. warplanes, are trying to broker an alarming merger between militant archrivals the Islamic State and Jabhat al Nusra, the official Syrian branch of al Qaeda.

The merger, if it comes off, would have major ramifications for the West. It would reshape an already complex battlefield in Syria, shift forces further against Western interests, and worsen the prospects for survival of the dwindling and squabbling bands of moderate rebels the U.S. is backing and is planning to train.

“Khorasan sees its role now as securing an end to the internal conflict between Islamic State and al Nusra,” says a senior rebel source. The first results are already being seen on the ground in northern Syria with a coordinated attack on two rebel militias favored by Washington.

All three of the groups involved in the merger talks—Khorasan, Islamic State (widely known as ISIS or ISIL), and al Nusra—originally were part of al Qaeda.

What's really sad is that after all the flak about supporting terrrurists to fight terrrurists in Syria, they were still arming Al-Qaeda. Their hubris grows by the day. Did McCain personally meet with Al-Qaeda too?

ISIS is smart, aggressive and wealthy. They still have not attacked Israel or America. If and when they do attack America, they will attack the specific people who cause their problems, specificly, politicians, The Fed and oligarchs... unless politicians, The Fed and oligarchs are the people backing ISIS.

ISIS is not stable enought to do anything but defence. They need credibility, law (rules that arnt changed by decree), and time. Otherwise its just a gang of misfits running roughshod over communities and that ends badly.

You are mistaken, in Egypt a major islamist group has recently pledged allegiance to ISIS. Ansar Beit El-Maqdis has already made deadly attacks on Israel across the Sinai border.

There is now a war going on in Egypt. Every day the local papers cover bombings, shootings and beheadings.

Just today the Egyptian navy during an exercise was unexpectedly caught in a flotilla of enemy boats. A heavy battle took place, boats were sunk and 8 sailors from the navy are missing at sea.

In just over a year of the insurgency the death toll is approaching the toll of a decade of insurgency back 20 years ago involving Al Gamaah Al islamiya (they kiled over 50 tourists in one attack, 18 in another). It is also getting worse and reports are that foreign jihadists are now entering Egypt.

Only a matter of time before a coordinated attack kills a few hundred tourists (or a few thousand, if they sieze a few of the big hotels). Lots of places tourist destinations are just ripe for the slaughter. They hate tourism and the revenue it provides the government.

Why would we care?  We have been bombing both of them since the start.  Some media were questioning why we started our campaign against ISIS by bombing Khorasan, of whom no one had ever heard, but whatevs.  If they are all in one place it will take fewer bombs to kill them.  I don't think we have a good strategy for fighting them, but them banding together isn't unexpected.

Awhile back we had an article about how the time is ripe for a new Hitler type to emerge....I think ISIS is it...they seem to have the cool factor with the youth of the world....I keep hearing stories of how westerners are going to join the fight..both men and women....its seem to be quite a fad..and the beheading videos gets the young boys turned on...they love that stuff after playing video games 8 hours a day...I bet their membership grows and grows fast...they seem to have a good grasp of the internet and social programs to recruit and glorify what they are and are doing...they have money too...We from the Christian Religions need to watch ourselves with this bunch...they do not want us around anymore...and they do not abide by the Geneva Conventions either

Manageable war. Just what the pentagon likes.
