Putin "Prepares For Economic War", Buys Whopping 55 Tonnes Of Gold In Q3

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as China is buying 'cheap' oil with both hands and feet, so Russia, according to the latest data from The World Gold Council (WGC) has been buying gold in huge size. Dwarfing the rest of the world's buying in Q3, Russia added a stunning 55 tonnes to its reserves, as The Telegraph reports, Putin is taking advantage of lower gold prices to pack the vaults of Russia's central bank with bullion as it prepares for the possibility of a long, drawn-out economic war with the West.

Russia bought more gold in Q3 then all other countries combined...

*  *  *

*  *  *

As The Telegraph reports,

Vladimir Putin's government is understood to be hoarding vast quantities of gold, having tripled stocks to around 1,150 tonnes in the last decade. These reserves could provide the Kremlin with vital firepower to try and offset the sharp declines in the rouble.

Russia's currency has come under intense pressure since US and European sanctions and falling oil prices started to hurt the economy. Revenues from the sale of oil and gas account for about 45pc of the Russian government's budget receipts.

In total, central banks around the world bought 93 tonnes of the precious metal in the third quarter, marking it the 15th consecutive quarter of net purchases. In its report, the World Gold Council said this was down to a combination of geopolitical tensions and attempts by countries to diversify their reserves away from the US dollar.

By the end of the year, central banks will have acquired up to 500 tonnes of gold during the latest buying spell, according to Alistair Hewitt, head of market intelligence at the World Gold Council.

"Central banks have been consistently adding to their gold holdings since 2009," Mr Hewitt told the Telegraph.

Furthermore... Where did I state this?

"You claim that the US Government does not have its pedophile and pederast priests?"

I OFFER MY 'UNIVERSAL APOLOGIES' to all people out there who think that I have something against:

Your post above is where you reveal your own duplicity. You attack organized religion and declare the atheists superior when that is not the case. They are subject to the same immorality.

If you are duplicit in one claim then that really kind of...sort of...IMPEACHES YOUR ENTIRE TESTIMONY.

Your lack of respect for the written word, whether is is the Bible, or, the US Constitution, is most remarkable.

You swear an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States as you are a cop.

Yet your oath which you swore was meaningless as you celebrate the Constitution's upcoming suspension.

As all liberals you will follow orders and not the laws you have sworn to uphold.

As an atheist you suscribe to the belief of Moral Relativity and forsake any Moral absolutes.

Then you sit and wonder why that your Authoritarian State is not supported and subject to be reviled.

When the Oil Refineries are enflamed and the pipelines explode, within the homeland, you will reap the destruction of which you have sown abroad.

This Republic was designed for a Moral People, that of which you are lacking.

Yes you may have some support for your sacreligious prayer as there are misguided atheists. But while the support your atheism the would be reviled at your authoritarian statist views. Actually it is rather revolting.

And, at that point, when you reveal your true nature, just whose side do you think that they will choose?

hiya Tall Tom-

What if atheists became a majority? The first thing they would do is this:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under no god, indivisible, with freedom and justice for all.”

I bet that would make some folk -including you, -madder that a pit-bull chewing a wasp.

I do not pledge any allegiance to your Government...."under God"...or not.

I don't pledge allegiance to the flag either.  Here's why...

The definition of:

pledge:

1 a :  a bailment of a chattel as security for a debt or other obligation without involving transfer of title b :  the chattel so delivered c :  the contract incidental to such a bailment

allegiance: the obligation of a feudal vassal to his liege lord

So much for a "free" country!

I really like Putin.  I really do.

From the Dollar Vigilante...

The legalization of marijuana by some US states is not in line with international drug conventions,  according to the  communist UN anti-narcotics chief.  He [Fedotov] said he would be addressing the issue in Washington next week, underscoring the lack of true sovereignty in the US.

Although residents of Oregon, Alaska, Washington and Colorado have voted to allow the use of marijuana, the UN believes its will is most important, regardless of how voters feel. They are too dumb to know what’s best for themselves, anyway, right UN?

"I don't see how (the new laws) can be compatible with existing conventions," Yury Fedotov, the Russian executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), told reporters.

Fedotov said he would be raising the problem next week with the US State Department and other UN agencies. Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Colorado: You're in big, big trouble...

For you Putin lovers here, this action demonstrates the Control Freak Psychopathy which Putin actually has. He is just as statist as that fucking asshole in the White House. There is NO DIFFERENCE. The Director is on Vlad's payroll and Putin pays him to act in Russian interests.

No Putin is not any better than Obama. They are ALL FUCKING PSYCHOPATHS and anytime that they act they do so in their own best interests.

The sooner that the fact sinks in then the better off you will be as you will stop looking for someone to lead you and become a leader yourself. LEAD YOURSELF.

I want to be part of the reconstitution of the Soviet Union into its latest iteration.  Sure, there will still be gulags (ask Mikhail Khodorkovsky), a state-controlled media (see, e.g., Russia Today), reduced life expectancies (almost a decade behind the good old USA) and the traditional diminished GDP per capita die-hard Soviets have come to know and love (the current Russian per capita GDP is a fraction of US per capita GDP), but we'll have a kick-ass president who invades neighboring countries in the morning, shoots bears in the afternoon and judo-flips placid, compliant flunkees in the evening!  What more could we want?

My limited understanding still brings into the realm of my knowledge...the fact that sanctions have forced the Russians to buy up their own mining production.

That also explains why they said a week or so back that "Russia may sell some gold".  They are likely buying domestic production beyond their own planned purchase schedule.  Hence sitting on "extra".  One way as well to bypass the sanctions...or am I being too simple?

The ratings company said it has a stable outlook in Twitter's credit, to reflect the company's high growth potential over the next several years, including expectations of healthy monthly active user (MAU) and revenue growth. However, S&P does not expect Twitter to pursue shareholder activities such as buybacks and dividends. S&P also issued a BB- rating and a "3" recovery rating on the company's $1.8 billion in convertible debt issued in September, which indicates expectations for a meaningful recovery of as much of 70% of principal in the event of default. Its shares fell 5.2% to $40.33 in recent trade."

I was kind of waiting for the usual pack of Russophobes to show up and mock the outdated, easily-defeated vacuum-tube Russain technology.

The story is partially true - the Su-24MP is the EW version and they probably slapped a set of KNIRTY jammer pods on it. It would have serously messed with the Cook's SPY-1 radar and AGEIS ship defense systems that close in. Those jammers are damn powerful - EMP in a can.

When you think about this though, you have a 34-year-old, maybe $20M Russian swing-wing figher-bomber able to penetrate or disable the AGEIS system and air defense radars and get close enough for a kill on a state of the art $1.8 BILLION dollar Arleigh Burke–class destroyer. It actually took two Russain aircraft - there would have been another one at a much higher altitude and further away providing complementary jamming for the low one.

The U.S. has similar capability with the E-6 and F-18. The one thing we don't have is experience with really high-powered radar. Russians have always loved to build them. The KNIRTY jammers are like a bunch of ultra-high powered industrial microwave horns that are operated in a phased-array manner through a dialectric lens. That means they can steer almost all the jamming power into a narrow beam directly into, oh, say a SPY-1 radar. They have to water-cool the jamming pods when they test them on land, otherwise they would get hot enough to melt.

The layered defenses of the Arleigh Burke destroyers are designed to intercept aircraft far enough out so they never get close enough to wreak havoc with the jammers. The Russians figured out a staggered approach technique with dual-jamming that supposedly defeats the long-range radar and any on-board terminal radar on a SAM.

The original article (from a Russian site, I believe) claimed a bunch of Donald Cook's sailors resigned after the incident. I doubt that and wonder how well the Russian techniques actually worked. Of course, nobody - especially the Donald Cook crew - is going to say either how well the ship's defenses actually performed or if they were blinded by the jammers.

Talk to anyone who crews one of these destroyers and they'll insist it's radars are absolutely invinceable. On the other hand, Soviet-era radars on the old MiGs were reportedly powerful enough to smoke rabbits and other assorted rodents anywhere near the runway when they fired them up. Brute force isn't pretty, but it works.

The event happened and AP had a story on it. It was posted on ZH.

The concrete facts are that the Donald Cook was deployed to the Black Sea for a couple of weeks and, at one point, buzzed by the Su-24. The Cook then made a port call in Romania and then left about a week later.

Everything else about the incident is speculation. Nobody knows.

We do know that putting an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the Black Sea is a provocation on par with the Cuban missile crisis. The Cook can carry nuclear-tipped cruise misslies - Russia didn't care to have it bobbing around their back yard.

I have never understood this 'gold' thing, but now I am starting to understand it and its relationship to real money which is backed by gold.

When a currency is backed by something that represents 'value' as in gold, the currency has value too.  The words on a green back or any other country with fiat, does not amount to anything if a country goes broke or experiences hyper inflation.

If you have a currency backed by gold, it will always be worth more than toilet paper.

Until Russia backs its currency with Precious Assets (Carbon fuels plus Gold), the Fork in the Road has not been reached.

I.e., Appearances and posturing aside, it is still LIKELY** that both Russia and China are not opposed to a "NWO", but are merely positioning themselves for a fair deal at the NWO and SDR table.  There cannot and will not be global acceptance of the SDR until these two (and perhaps India) get their seat.

The current allocation of currencies backing the SDR is a joke:  USD, EUR, JPY, GBP.  It's a joke, insofar that the UK has a share (bigger than Germany's share via the EUR), when China, Russia and India do not.

For the SDR to be globally acceptable, there has to be a G10 to G20 participation.  TPTB in the West are clinically insane, if they think even for a minute that they can impose their sociopathic will (to rule the world), w/o the participation of the BRIIC countries.

** Note Putin’s recent speech and his 10 Points, at the economic forum in Sochi, Oct. 24:

“10. There is still a chance to construct a new world order that will avoid a world war. This new world order must of necessity include the United States—but can only do so on the same terms as everyone else: subject to international law and international agreements; refraining from all unilateral action; in full respect of the sovereignty of other nations.”

We know the physics behind it well enough to know the energy expenditure is much, much higher synthesizing gold from other elements than it is from mining. There's no magic alchemy that's going to change the physics. It'd take a manhattan-project level investment just to create the machinery to make a few ounces, and that's not even counting energy costs.

In other words, it will never happen until we can harvest an entire star's energy and there is no available gold whatsover in the entire solar system.

Yes, gold can be created artificially in a particle accelerator or a nuclear reactor.

The downside to the reactor approach is that the produced gold is radioactive, and possibly unstable.

The downside to the accelerator approach is that the cost of the electricity needed to power the process is orders of magnitude greater than the value of the gold produced.

If we do get to the point where gold can be efficiently created in particle collisions, that will mean that humanity will have learned to harness controlled nuclear fusion and/or matter/antimatter reactors.

I don't think wasting money on gold is such a good idea. Certainly not a good idea if the underlying motivewas to prepare for war.

Putin would have been realy smart if he used that money to buy graphite and other "rare earth" metals. These are what will be worth more than gold, once sanctions turn to embargos and blockades.
