Just one thing for those celebrating the drop in gas prices at the pump as some tax cut for the consumer (which it is not - it merely allocates the same aggregate spending dollars from gas to a different consumable - leaving aggregate spending just the same - or less in fact should consumers, as in Japan's balance sheet recession, choose to minimize debt as opposed to maximize profits or living standards with their extra cash)... this is what happened to home electricity bills last year... Not true.....the peaks of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Haleakala get that low in Farenheit even in the summer as they range in elevation from 10K-13K feet.

Been to sunny California several times and even contemplated moving there in my less sane younger years. Have in laws there as well. I just couldn't get over how much it reminded me of the time I spent in South America (minus the friendly locals, clean air, and general lack of obesity). I'd much rather freeze for 3 months than spend my time admiring the barbed wire on interstate signs, graffiti, and incessant tv ads with black actors saying how nice the free phone they got for mom helped them stay in touch. Oh, and enjoy the absurd taxes, in your face butch dykes and newly polluted aquifers! .gov at its finest.

I read with interest what you have written and do not discount it as such.
The problem with climate warming is that it is called climate warming and this is to some degree contentious but more importantly it is divisive.
My preference would have been to state the problem confronting humanity as one of pollution and resource depletion. I do not believe anyone would argue with this approach and in the process of reducing pollution and and curbing resource depletion, any contribution (IF ANY) by man to climate warming would also be diminished.
Net result everyone better off including our planet.

I don't actually agree that the warmer pacific ocean temps are a result of global warming but they certainly are affecting arctic ice. Not less ice on the planet by the way the antartic getting larger, however all the climate change sceptics on here are wrong to downvote someone for posting a logical conclusion/arguement.
The bigger concern is the release of methane gas from northern oceans, and potential effect on gulf stream.
Global warming is a testament to the arrogance of man, the earth could release a big volcano and change the weather more than we could in 1000 years.

Yeah, OK, Global warming? I am not so sure about that after last winter and am less sure about the start to this one. We have more than a foot of snow on the ground and managed to get below get below zero last night in Minnesota. Like I didn't know that it would be this way but this winter is early and IT WILL NOT LET GO. That storm that rolled in last week basically said to me, "I have a huge set of balls and you are fucked." Indeed. We got rocked...bad. It has not let up at all. The streets are still frozen in ice some six inches deep in places and have been for a week. That storm was ruthless.
The wind blew like you would not believe here and drifts piled up. I am not saying that not is normal for here but it is not normal for this time of year. Now it is pure January like cold. The only time I have seen anything like it was 1991 but it warmed up. Not so this time. I checked the national news but no one mentioned a word. I guess they figure that we don't matter too much out here.

The last 6 months were the hottest since record keeping began. 13 out of the 14 years of this century were the warmest in recorded history. The last two and half decades were the warmest ever recorded. The result of all this are drought, floods and extreme weather events. The amount of energy present in the atmosphere and in the oceans is beyond human comprehension. Oceans store a huge amount of heat and CO2. That energy gets swirled around the planet. So how come it gets so cold now then? Dunno, I am not a climate scientists but something is not right. Is the Atlantic conveyor belt slowing down?
One can ignore the warnings about climate change but one cannot ignore the consequences ignoring the warnings.
So the warmer it gets the colder it gets? I think someones pulling my leg, this climate stuff is tricky.

Temperature and precipitation will witness extreme variabilities and that will lead to weather extremes. The climate is a wild beast that science only now is beginning to understand. Cold temperatures are normal in winter but this sudden onset and the spread over such a big geographical area is not normal.
The crowd here on ZH is in majority climate sceptic but one cannot deny that the climate is doing some funny things. Are humans to blame? Even the most sceptic scientist will not deny that CO2 and other gasses have 'green house effect' properties (the ability to absord and rerelease heat).
The world needs an energy revolution. That would put an end to increasing emissions of CO2 and will also end geopolitical and geo-energy games. And the latter will prevent the energy revolution because too much for TPTB is at stake such as keeping the dollar as the word's currency.
Get real! There are a bunch of things that are far more likely to get you next year, (radiation, pesticides, pharma, your local cop, etc) than something that may or may not happen a hundred years from now. Even if it does get warmer, ( I fucking hope so) you'll jave plenty of time to move.

What I have read climatologies are saying that these local events are stimulated by changes in the climate. So it may get intensly cold in one region but the overall climate is getting more energetic and warmer.

In our fast moving world some stories that should be noted often are overlooked and ignored. We all saw and heard about hurricane Sandy, in addition to flooding the subway system of New York and halting financial trading Sandy may of even tilted the Presidential election.
If Sandy had indeed made a difference in the election outcome one might say Sandy has had the impact of also altering our future. While we are becoming more use to these uncommon "weather occurrences", it is possible that we should be viewing them as a warning of worse yet to come. More on this subject in the article below.

I have built a couple of these, they do work. It is not instant heat, it takes a while to begin radiating, but it will heat a 10X10 room.

Now, on the good side, fuel oil may be cheaper due to the collapse of oil prices. But I am building these since they are cheap, and I rely on a heat pump when in the US.
Why not buy some cheaper fuel oil and supplement your heat with these simple devices?
Also, it will obviously cut the electric bill if you use shore power for energizing your domestic heater.
Too bad kerosene is still sky high. It doesn't get more clean and efficient that kerosene and the no-electricity kerosene heaters are always for sale used cheap.
