Close Encounter Between NATO F-16 And Russian MiG-31 Caught On Tape

Tyler Durden's picture

Once upon a time, the only place where a western fighter jet could come within meters of a Russian MiG was on Top Gun.

However, according to a video released earlier today by the Norwegian Armed Forces, that is no longer the case.

In the clip, a Russian MiG-31 "suddenly cut in front of one of two Norwegian aircraft sent up by NATO to intercept Russian aircraft in international airspace north off Norway. “What the hell,” says the Norwegian F-16 pilot in the video, as he dodges the MiG-31 passing him at a distance estimated to be closer than 20 meters (65 feet)."

According to the WSJ, the release of the video on Sunday follows a series of publications by Norwegian defense authorities regarding encounters with Russian aircraft this year, and it marks another sign of escalating concern among North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies over Moscow’s increased military activity.

The Norwegians are angry:

Norwegian Armed Forces spokesman Brynjar Stordal declined to say when the incident occurred, but said close calls such as this are rare. “We could have had a collision between the aircraft,” he said. “The pilot has a spontaneous reaction in the video, and both his comment and the evasive maneuver indicate that this is unwanted … We don’t know if this was a mistake by the Russian pilot, or a sign of a more aggressive behavior by the Russians.”

Or perhaps it was just aggressive behavior by Norway? After all, the Norwegiansdecided to intercept the Russian aircraft in international airspace on behalf of NATO.

It is now a provocation to fly in "international airspace"? Actually, it isn't. "“I don’t think there’s a special need for worry, but we are of course monitoring the activity,” Minister of Defense Ine Eriksen Søreide said in an emailed statement. Ms. Søreide said it was legitimate for the Russian military to exercise, also in international airspace, but that “Russia, like everyone else, must abide with international aviation laws and regulations. It is unacceptable that Russian planes create dangerous situations in European airspace….”

Wait a minute, according to that clip, it was the Norwegian behind the Russian not the other way around. And last we checked with any insurance company, it would have been the Norwegian's fault if a "dangerous situation" was created. Sadly, it increasingly appears that NATO's only motivation these days is to create as many "dangerous situations" involving Russia, as possible, with hope that one of them finally escalates into more than just jawboning. After all, one can't stimulate plunging "Keynesian" GDP with mere harsh words or John Kerry-esque "diplomacy."

Was this an F-16 shot down by the Syrians because they do not want the USA in their airspace?

What is scarey is the timing of this, since Obama (and supposedly Turkey) are talking about a "no-fly" zone in Syria.

Hmmm... perhaps the Syrians and their friends have a "no-fly" zone of their own...

Did anyone spank Ronald Reagan for this:

On September 1, 1983, Korean Airlines (KAL) flight 007 was on the last leg of a flight fromNew York City to Seoul, with a stopover in Anchorage, Alaska. As it approached its final destination, the plane began to veer far off its normal course. In just a short time, the plane flew into Russian airspace and crossed over the Kamchatka Peninsula, where some top-secret Soviet military installations were known to be located. The Soviets sent two fighters to intercept the plane. According to tapes of the conversations between the fighter pilots and Soviet ground control, the fighters quickly located the KAL flight and tried to make contact with the passenger jet. Failing to receive a response, one of the fighters fired a heat-seeking missile. KAL 007 was hit and plummeted into the Sea of Japan. All 269 people on board were killed.

Commander-in-Chief Reagan would not let the pilots answer the Russian fighters. To be forced down in Russia and have the cameras in the Korean plane discovered.  So Reagan sent 269 people to their deaths.

Reagan was a bigger nigger than Obama.

I was thinking of another interception in international airspace (but this story was quickly put to sleep): July2, 2013, the plane carrying President Evo Morales of Bolivia was not just intercepted but forced to land, on the unfounded suspicion that a certain Enemy of the State might be on board.

Your assumptions about aggressive behavior and analogies to cars and insurance companies are off the mark and do not apply here.  To fly an attack aircraft along another countries airspace boundaries is aggressive behavoir.  To give that aircraft an escort is normal practice.  To behave in the way the Russian fighter behaved is aggressive, reckless or incompetent.

Right.  And when the Americans do it they are often met by escorting aircraft.   It is customary that both parties then act carefully and not recklessly.  That is why this is exceptional.

If patroling fighters in international airspace is not a provocationin the North Atlantic, then is it still not a provocation in the baltic sea? Off the coast of Konigsberg?  In the bering sea off Kamchatka?

I am curious because last week's ZH articles - not ancient history, only DAYS,  were saying that Nato fighters in Poland - hundreds of miles from Russia - were a provocation, and that a small exercise that Russia was originally going to attend, and had full knowledge of, that occured five hundred miles from Russia was a provocation.

I don't give a crap what the standard is as long as it applies to everyone.

If on the other hand this is about one side or the other saying 'I own you! You will do as I say!', then I say this, "Fuck you both.  LIfe isn't precious enough to have on those terms".

Can't we just have a return of the plague, or something, to kill off all these assholes on both sides?

"Are the US, EU and NATO going to launch an invasion of Russia from Ukraine?"

Yes, this is the general plan.

The US GGOV Procurement office had opened offers for bids for the construction of the NAVY bases in Crimea and the military bases near Kiev, Ukraine in 2012-2013. The gov canceled the offers only in the beginning of 2014. If NATO gets the nuclear capable military facilities  near Kiev, it will be able to bomb Moscow in about 20 minutes time.

Needless to say that Ukraine would become a ground zero for a nuclear war in this case, but the majority of Ukrainians are incapable of thinking logically.

Some things has me intrigued. Not only for that particular meeting. The radar on the ground did not identify the Mig, why not? There radar platforms in flight watching the F-16? If there was, how did not identify the Mig? Recently bought a mobile phone that is popular in Brazil, uses open system Android ™ 4.4.4, KitKat® and Glonass system location. Sorry, but there was no "cut in front of" behavior.

-----

It is possible the guy in the F16 was dozing off, or just not paying much attention to what is near him, in which case it can be startling when you all of a sudden notice another aircraft relatively nearby.

This other airplane briefly visible is on an approximately parallel flight path, and there was never any danger.  It could be the F16 purposely feigned this whole situation and his reaction for PR purposes.  But we can't know that for certain either.

One thing is for sure, if the F16 pilot was surprised as he indicated, he demonstrated absolutely horrific situational awareness.  Also known as "asleep at the wheel".
