Images From A Dark Detroit: "Major Cable Failure" Sparks Widespread Power Outage
Just 15 months after Detroit's Black Out 2013 debacle, spokespeople for the city and DTE Energy confirmed at around 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday that most of Detroit’s municipal grid is offline:
- *DETROIT CITES 'MAJOR CABLE FAILURE' FOR POWER OUTAGE
- *DETROIT: OUTAGE IS AFFECTING ALL CUSTOMERS ON THE PLD GRID
The outage is preventing power from being delivered to police stations, schools, traffic lights and other city-run facilities and services.
According to Detroit Press Office shortly before noon:
"The city's public lighting grid suffered a major cable failure that has caused the entire grid to lose power at approximately 10:30 this morning. The outage is affecting all customers on the PLD grid. We have isolated the issue and are working to restore power as soon as possible."
As RT reports,
“It looks like the entire Detroit Public Lighting system is down. Affecting about 100 buildings, places like The Joe, Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, fire stations, schools.
We were notified about 10:30 a.m. We’re working with them to help resolve the situation. We’ll help investigate the problem and make repairs. It’s too early yet to determine what has caused the shutdown,” Scott Simons of DTE Energy Co. told the Detroit News.

An estimated one in seven appraisals conducted from 2011 through early 2014 inflated home values by 20% or more, according to data provided to The Wall Street Journal by Digital Risk Analytics, a subsidiary of Digital Risk LLC. The mortgage-analysis and consulting firm based in Maitland, Fla., was hired by some of the 20 largest lenders to review their loan files.
The firm reviewed more than 200,000 mortgages, parsing the homes’ appraised values and other information, including the properties’ sizes and similar homes sold in the areas at the times. The review was conducted using the firm’s software and staff appraisers.
Bankers, appraisers and federal officials in interviews said inflated appraisals are becoming more widespread as the recovery in the housing market cools. While home prices are increasing generally, their appreciation is slowing, and sales have been weak despite low interest rates. The dollar amount of new mortgages issued this year is expected to be down 39% from last year, at about $1.12 trillion, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

my first big stock market score was the chrysler bailout so i followed the auto industry pretty closely back then. the big three had a 1500 dollar/car cost advantage over the growing japanese imports they complained about incessantly at the time. instead of using that cost advantage(that grew through the eighties because of the stengthening yen and is why honda and toyota opened their first usa plants) to protect market share they put all that money in their pockets for this quarter's numbers. both toyota and honda even voluntarily put a quota on usa auto exports because they did not want to grow so fast in the usa without having the proper infrastructure first. the usa automakers took another 15 years to get their act together and have not caught up yet. that is what happened to detroit.
The issue simply put was this:
in the 70s, we had an oil shock but that was only part of the problem.
The workers got militant and very diversified.
Quality was not just bad....it was horrendous. Cars built on monday or friday were worse than midweek.
And to top it off.....dealers salivated everytime a new car got brought in for "service". You got serviced alright....good, long, hard and deep. And they didn't even use lube.
Engineering designed cars to fail. Workers built them to fail. And YOU got to pay for it. Thru the fucking nose.
The trauma of that experience was so bad that even today, liberals (who claim to support unions) won't buy a domestic car. Go to Cali and see for yourself.
The domestics had homefield advantage, referrees in their pockets.....and still fucked it up.
That is the lesson of Detroit.

I just drove through part of the electric debacle in Detroit and am back in my suburban ranch house. Having worked in Detroit most of my life we are all well aware here of Detroit’s city owned electric grid that is now in shambles. It is a classic case of Democrat socialistic greed gone from good to destroyed.
In the beginning the Detroit city owned electric grid was called a gem. It was called a model for cities all across America to implement. And then the public union’s arrived on the scene with their stifling wage and work rule demands. New electric workers on the grid were limited by work rules causing 60 hour work weeks. The 20 hours over time was paid double rate. Next came the fancy health care plan, large pensions and up to 6 weeks off a year.
As the union demands became the norm, the electric grid fell into more and more disrepair as the city could not meet them. This forced layoffs and more poor grid service. To counter this loss of service, multiple times in the past, the state urged the city to privatize the grid. But the greedy city politicians refused. Now in bankruptcy Detroit can no longer ignore the problem and will be privatizing the grid to Detroit Edison. Edison said it will take up to seven years to replace the aged neglected cables in the grid and restore the grid to “average” service. This is another example of how Democrat politicians and public unions continue to destroy America…
