Crude Carnage Contagion: Biggest Stock Bloodbath In 3 Years, Credit Crashes

Tyler Durden's picture

We leave it to Jack to explain what happened this week...

Quite a week!!

  • WTI's 2nd worst week in over 3 years (down 10 of last 11 weeks)
  • Dow's worst worst week in 3 years
  • Financials worst week in 2 months
  • Materials worst week since Sept 2011
  • VIX's Biggest week since Sept 2011
  • Gold's best week in 6 months
  • Silver's last 2 weeks are best in 6 months
  • HY Credit's worst 2 weeks since May 2012
  • IG Credit's worst week in 2 months
  • 10Y Yield's best week since June 2012
  • US Oil Rig Count worst week in 2 years
  • The USDollar's worst week since July 2013
  • USDJPY's worst week since June 2013
  • Portugal Bonds worst week since July 2011
  • Greek stocks worst week since 1987

Some serious intraday volatility this week as hope kept shining through but in the end, reality won. Despite spiking euphoria among US Consumers, concerns over Greek elections, Japanese elections, the GDP-plunge-driven collapse in oil prices (with neither OPEC nor non-OPEC willing to blink yet on cutting production), and contagion to high-yield finallly caught up with stocks after they blindly followed the mainstream media narrative that low oil prices are unequivocally good for every muppet.

First things first... 2014 so far... "why would you buy a Treasury bond when you can buy stocks with dividends?"

Here's why crude matters...

No Hindenburg Omen today but it appears the Dow & S&P are pressing down to test their 50DMAs...

On the week, The Dow was the laggard... NOT OFF THE LOWS

And Energy sector the worst...

The Russell 2000 closed the week negative year-to-date...

VIX surged this week (ignore the excitement over percentage moves)...

Treasury yields collapsed...

Leaving the decoupling at epic levels... between bonds and stocks..

and between credit and stocks...

The Dollar slipped a little today to end the week down over 1%

Gold and Silver had great weeks - very stable as the rest of the markets turmoiled - while oil prices

Crude is now down 25% from the initial OPEC leaks...back below $58!!

Makes you wonder eh? The decoupling began when QE3 was hinted at...

and energy credit is near 1000bps now... and is starting to spread to rest of the HY markets...

notably worse than stocks (for now)...

*  *  *

But it's all about the fundamentals!! Great Jobs Data, Great Retail Sales Data, and Great Consumer Confidence Data - unless that's all totally manipulated bullshit?

Charts: Bloomberg

Bonus Chart: How much longer can this go on?

Well....that certainly is the 'smart' thing to do. But it might not be the right thing to do.

For some people the object is not to 'retire' with a nest egg, but to get out before the nest egg is swallowed by the fox.

However I agree there are consequences.

Mr. Hammer is likely rolling it into a self directed account with margin and will simply borrow from himself rather than incur tax penalties.

Huh?

If you haven't realized, it's nearly year end.
So if he liquidates it next year, assuming he will have no to very low income next year, he will not add progressively to that taxation rate.

And the other question you're conveniently ignoring is if he will still get any 401k payout or anything of value for those payouts when he turns 59.5 years.

"Liquidating a 401k while you're working is nuts. It's taxed at normal income PLUS 10% penalty off the top."

Some people say I was nuts and yes they did tax it like that (IRA).

But the beautiful thing about it is, no one can "digitally" remove it from my possession now. No changing of law will do it, no court order, no edict, no moar progressive taxation, no insurance, no fees, no statements, no records...just gone...poof!

I can now drop my cell phone in a small box to California and arrive anywhere I please, unnoticed, untracked, unaccounted for.

Its very liberating ;-)

If I roll it into a self-directed Ira we can't live on the property per ridiculous tax law, so I'm liquidating. It's worth the freedom. It's the only sure thing out there. The land, water, seeds, and sun will survive the money changers.

Or there's the alternative... watching it evaporate when the market crashes or retirement accounts are nationalized (stolen).

I personally liquidated a 401(k) account in 2007 and took the 10% penalty.  My boss (at the time) told me I was crazy to do it.  I bought gold at $655 and silver at $14.85.  I've never regretted it.

Maybe a little late on this thread but here's my advice--

Look at nothing but bank owned properties. They are so desperate to get out from under country foreclosures that they give them away to anybody with cash. Mine was a 10-year-old log-sided triple modular wuth a 20,000 metal roof that had never even been lived in on 40 acres, with well, septic, phone, electric and a barn. We offered 54 on Friday afternoon and the head bank office out in Missouri accepted it on Saturday morning. So fast that I kicked myself for not starting at 50.

My previous country estate was raw land that I developed from scratch. Cost me a lot more, took a lot longer, and I got a lot less for all the extra effort.

Trust me, buy an existing pad and modify it to suit as you please afterwards. Short sales are murder and take forever, by the way. Bank owned properties-- solid gold and you'll be country in a month.

Isn't it? I finally found a sawmill a while ago and man I'm glad I did. The mailman told me about it but I couldn't find it. It's an ancient thing way down a dirt road and the mailman told not to sneak up on them. Really nice guys..I told them what I wanted and he said he'd call me back with a price....400 bucks...delivered. ALL solid oak posts (6X6), beams, planks. Unbelievable. So I asked him to bring me 200 bucks extra. The brought me so much I changed plans and made it big enough to fit the tractor LOL! All done for 600 bucks including metal roof from the Mennonites, cement, hinges, fasteners. It's very solid...we love it. Larry is an inspiration to us at "Half-a-Day Farm".

Belize apparently has a bunch of Mennonites.

They will build you a house for a fairly cheap price on your land. Seems very doable. I'm not sure Belize is the right place... but you can look at the pictures of what they do on the internet... Starts simple so that is what we want.

Looking at houses in Belize, I'm not sure about the locations and the size of the house... but it is a project so you have to make decisions.

To meat hammer: started four years ago with my little farm in oregon, planted a large orchard with  many varieties of fruit trees and berry bushes like currants and sweet european gooseberries.  Put up a large ground mounted solar system, refurbished the greenhouse, and got a 15kw generator that my diesel powered tractor drives and now have sales to restaurants and the cider industry.  You can do it if you avoid the pitfalls of the large farms which compete with large ag. businesses directly.  Grow that which you love and know  is good for people and do go organic.  I am now starting aquaponics (fish farming with the water going to the hydroponic system) to increase my efficiency in food production.

Took the 20% hit on 401K and went to seeking out a more self sufficient life.  Didn't completely unshackle myself from the slavorading mode until 2010.  Oh it's a wonderful feeling to not pay squat into the corrupted criminal system.  In 2015 I begin drawing whatever I can from social insecurity for however long.  May not even get one month but don't need it anyway.  The food storage; guns and ammo; barter-able real money physically in hand silver eagles galore, and a partridge in a pear tree were locked down long ago.  It's great for you Hammer.   Likely you won't miss the long pole of the system ramming up a free jiffy lube daily while your bent over in sphincter puckering position.  Nice to see another get a spine; stand upright and walk away from the slavorading shit hole.

I bought 20 acres in Missouri. Property taxes are rather cheap.

Added bonuses: 3/4 acre stocked pond, 40x80 outbuilding housing the saw mill and woodshop, tornado safe room, plus I get to shoot weapons off my back porch anytime time I want. A lot of homes up for sale in the area, just depends on the amount of space you think you'll need.

Probably as close as I will get to heaven on earth during my lifetime.

I live 4 acres in eastern Missouri, just on the edge of where the middle of nowhere begins an hour away from St Louis. I like to pee outside in the morning, with the birds and the fresh morning air and no worries about the neighbors being able to see me. I'm in the process of finding my own acreage, if you search carefully you can find land as low as $600 an acre depending on where you want to be.

I cashed out and paid off debt and moved to AK. Still in the hole a bit, but things are in way better shape now and my job should be around until I die which is somewhat comforting.

And this one doesn't make me contribute to a 401k, which is a nice perk!

I've sincerely wondered how I could actually do that myself.  I'm in my late thirties with several kids (pre-school to mid teens) and wife with some health problems.  I'm not exactly handy, but can build some things and have liquid investments to pay those who can build.

I don't think there was a "last straw"...it's something I've been planning to do for awhile.  The biggest obstacle was convincing Mrs. Meat that we don't need "services".  She thinks the police protect us and that we need the fire department even though we've never ever called them.  She then mentioned having a medical emergency and what do we do then?  My response: "Oh, you mean like having a heart attack from the stress of the rat race?  How about we go live in peace and if we drop dead one day, so be it?"  She got on board after that.

Cities make me nervous. Having lots of people around makes me nervous. Having drunks standing on the streets makes me nervous.

But I'm not exactly a country man either. But have been walking in the woods this year... reminds me of hunting. Walking in a park or wherever is very meditative... and as it gets cold you never see anyone.

I have a relative that says country living is great as long as you are at least 1 hour or 2 from the Walmart or big shopping places.

Thanks to everyone on this thread. Good pics and channel.

Inspires. I'm in an old house with problems. But largely not in the rat race or stocks... never learned options well enough... so not an investor. Might consider starting a biz, building a house, installing a generator, or relocating including overseas... but lately don't see going to a foreign country so much... might consider working in a bank to learn more...

I'm retired at this point. But not happy about the world as I see it. Not at all. Have to be dead to like the system.

"learn how to garden, can, use solar, wind, etc"

We canned another ten cases of about ten kinds of veggies this year. After we get through with most of last years vast assortment, we will crack into the new batches sometime in Spring Just in time to plant.

There is so much to share around all that. One key deal is, if you are going to garden, go wild with at least 100X100 feet to start with. You can eat from it all spring, summer, and fall and then can for the winter. One only goes to the store for a few basics and eats very well most of the year.

Moar about gardening, but one last key to ponder. If you are in the sticks, there are most likely critters. After you roto-till your oversized space, put up a 8 foot fence and garw around it, and ten high if in Alaska. Those crazy moose can really hop!

You have to electricize the top wire to keep the crawlers out, including your average bear. Once they get a taste of the ZAP!, they comes around no moar. Besides learning to defend your hard worked for goodies in the garden from four-leggeds, you will have to learn to defend it from the two legged also.

Thots to ponder...support from tranquillity base.

Kudos to all on board tonight.

Bless.

On a side note just remember that there will be collateral damage out there when things fall apart. A lot of good people will go down with the ship. If you can be generous to the young. I worry about them. I am sure they will adapt but I can't imagine being young and knowing your generation was screwed by the very people who portend to care about you. Boehner rammed his bill in to bail out the big boys before the S hits that's who his crowd answers to and no one else I doubt he rammed it through because he feared the soon to be sworn in newly elected members, since the donkey party would free up more votes for Boehner if the newly sworn in elephants dont go with the program Not all the newbies are anti Boehner, but it is useful to the establishment to continue the charade IMHO this was planned a good time back - before the election. I believe you are right about being planned a good time back. I also think the CIA torture report was released at this time to keep the water cooler crowd focussed away from the budget bill putting us on the hook for $303 trillion in derivatives. Congress should be disbanned- they do not represent us so let's stop pretending. How much could we save on salaries and lifetime benefits. If Detroit pensioners are forced to take a cut then former Congress members can enroll in Obamacare- the Affordable Care Act. We can't afford to pay not only for Congress members' salaries and travel but their staffs' compensation too. Anyone out there know how much Congress costs us per year- including everything- security- upkeep on buildings- it would be interesting to know.
