World Awaits Russian Response As Obama Makes "Lethal Aid" To Ukraine Legal

As we reported over the weekend, in the tumult surrounding Citigroup's annexation of Congress with the passage of the theatrically dramatic $303 trillion derivative quid-pro-$1.1 trillion spending quo, what most missed is that Congress also unanimously passed the The Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014, which not only expands Russian sanctions (read the details here) but far more impotantly, provides "lethal assistance to Ukraine’s military." And as we explained, passage of this law is just the pretext some Russian legislators needed to push for a full-blown, preemptive military incursion in east-Ukraine.
“The decision of the US Senate is extremely dangerous. If it is supported by the House of Representatives and signed by their president, Russia must reply with adequate measures,” Mikhail Yemelyanov of the Fair Russia party told reporters on Friday.
"It is quite possible that we should return to the decision by our Upper House and give the Russian president an opportunity to use military force on Ukrainian territory preemptively. We should not wait until Ukraine is armed and becomes really dangerous,” the lawmaker stated.
Yemelyanov also noted that in his opinion the US Senate’s decision to arm Ukraine had revealed that Washington wasn’t interested in the de-escalation of the Ukrainian conflict. He then said that US actions gave him the impression they was seeking to turn Ukraine into some sort of an “international militant targeting the Russian Federation.”
“In a few years Ukraine will turn into a poor and hungry country with an anti-Russian government that will teach its population to hate Russia. They will be armed to the teeth and Ukraine and US reluctance to recognize the Russian Federation within its current borders would always provoke conflicts,” the MP said.
Furthermore, we asked if "this means that what was a lingering proxy cold civil war in east Ukraine between NATO-armed Ukraine troops and Russia-armed Separatists and local militias is about to escalate into a shooting precursor to something greater? There is still hope an all out escalation can be avoided" and we cited White House press secretary Joshn Earnest who last week said that "the administration hadn’t finished reviewing the language and isn’t ready to take a position on the legislation. He said the administration wants to ensure that the U.S. and its European allies are working together, that any sanctions are effective and that they minimize harm to U.S. and European companies. “This is delicate work,” Earnest said."
Apparently, not delicate enough, and moments ago we got confirmation that the epic collapse in the USDRUB is just a jovial preview of the main event. To wit:

What the western, and certainly NATO, response at that point will be, is far beyond our meager prediction skills.

Highly unlikely. Putins actions are seldom the ones that were expected. He acts in the interests of Russia, not from emotions. Much more likely he will do something totally unexpected. He might move into Ukraine, but only as a last resort, if not doing so would have worse consequences.

so what changed?
I can't help but note that this happening right when the cease fire appears to be actually taking hold and both sides have largely stopped shooting at each other. so I guess this tells us that Washington is not happy about things finally settling down because it doesn't serve there purpose of creating an unstable situation right on the Russian border. in other words DC has more of an interest and need for this conflict to stay hot then Moscow does, despite all the propaganda spewed in our media insisting it's the other way around.
as has been pointed out already this 400 million is most likely on top of whatever they have already shipped to Kiev. there are local journalists in the Ukraine who have reported that Kiev has been receiving lethal aid from, or being paid for by, Washington since this summer despite multiple reports and statements even by Kiev officials that they already had plenty of armaments and more weapons wasn't really what was needed.that was the line, at least right up until Russia launched there stealth "invasion" of the east, only after that did Kiev start crying bullet poverty.
we all know for Washington and NATO this was never really about a free and democratic Ukraine anyways, they are just cannon fodder in the larger war against Putin and a strong, independent Russia. what's disconcerting now is that it appears DC is now attempting to force Moscow to do what it has thus far managed to avoid, moving military forces directly into the Ukraine. this would, of course, allow NATO to further paint Russia as the aggressor and give them the excuse to pile in as many military assets into eastern Europe as they can scare up including that missile defense shield, as now they could drop the pretense that it was "not pointed at Russia" seeing as they are the bad guys again.
as far as not imposing any new sanctions Obama is a notorious liar and only a fool would take him at his word on that and Putin is defiantly not a fool. though he may not impose them right away, at least not until the teleprompter tells him to.
in any case this sends a clear, if insane message to Moscow that Washington has absolutely zero interest in any type of peaceful relationship and is now dropping even the pretense of wanting one. if I were a Russian leader I would absolutely interpret this as an extremely hostile act, and when coupled with the existing sanctions an act of war.

As Obama and NATO do not have the overwhelming weapons needed to wage a war against Russia, only the unauthorized action of allies of the West, e. g. Israel, ISIS, could cause a Western casus belli and start "The Big One."

Sure, but my thinking is that if/when the USG lethal weapons now being supplied to Kiev begin to change the course of the civil war in favour of Kiev, that could mean they re-establish control in the East.
At that point, Kiev /NATO forces could then be lining up on the Russian border and he's more surrounded - the very scenario that Putin decided was never acceptable. And it prevents Russia from supporting/re-supplying East Ukraine. Putin wants to prevent that.
IMO Putin would seek to prevent this and the only sure way of doing that is to put his own forces inside East Ukraine before Kiev/NATO get there.
As you say Putin has not responded to a lot of provocation so far. The question is whether this move by Washington is a step too far. I believe it's intended to be, but Putin may wait to see what lethal weapons are being supplied and then decide.
No chance at all. Russia will not act unless regular forces cross their border or shoot stuff over the border or fly over and bomb. NATO will put their forces in place and then do what ever they want with any who still support Russia in the adjacent countries, while the Israeli/US companies plunder those same countries.
These forces will provide protection for covert insurgents who cross the border to commit terrorism. Deeply embeded covert agents will strke deep within Russia. The population may get tired and turn from Putin for not being a real chess player and preventing this.
Putin wants to negotiate a place for himself and the Russian elites at the big table and will never risk a hot war. Russia will be sacrificed by their elites.

If I was young, I would pack my sniper rifle, go to Ukraine and bag some Russkie invaders myself. There are very few thrills in life that compare with exploding a head at 800m, then taking down the surrounding shocked comrades before they react. Another enjoyable tactic is only gut-shooting one guy so that he can still call out for help and then nailing all the comrades who come to help him.
Go back to Russia and you will not have any problems with the "nazis" in Ukraine. Ironically, Vasily Zaytsev was a hero to me and I aspired to his exceptional skill. The sad tragedy is that the Russians are exceptionally capable people, I have great respect for them, but their leaders always seem to be doing stupid shit trying to control and dominate neighbors by force, and some tragic defect in the Russian people makes them feel compelled to follow their domineering leaders.

I don't have anything against Russians, I admit to liking the ordinary people a lot. Russians have many excellent qualities and achievements, eg good soldiers, good mathematicians, good space technology, good fighter aircraft technology, etc.
I just hate invaders. I also sided with the Irish fighting for independence from the English invaders in Northern Ireland. Once you have experienced being invaded yourself, you hate all invaders, everywhere. So the Russians in Ukraine should just go back to Russia, then everyone will be in his own country and can make whatever mess of their own country that they want, and leave others to make their own mess in their country. Simple.

Since April the West through its control of Ukraine have been trying to trigger a Russian invasion of the Donbas region to no avail. Why?

The reason the US is cozying up to Cuba is to prevent Russia from sending missiles to Castro. I still see Putin sending missiles (or missile capable ships) to Cuba - or at least threatening to.
Putin could also agree that Russia will help Syria fight Obama's declared ISIL enemies - what could Obama do? Then Russia could declare 'no fly zones'?
The easy thing for Putin to do is pass the exact same law as the US and simply declare - for every tank the US sends to Ukraine we will send 10. For every bullet the US sends, we will send 100.
I do not see Putin actually invading Ukraine - that is what Obama wants.
