Gun Violence In America (In 6 Uncomfortable Charts)

Tyler Durden's picture

A recent report, The Annual Review of Public Health, summarizes the basic facts of firearm violence, a large and costly public health problem in the United States for which the mortality rate has remained unchanged for more than a decade. It presents findings for the present in light of recent trends. Risk for firearm violence varies substantially across demographic subsets of the population and between states in patterns that are quite different for suicide and homicide. Suicide is far more common than homicide and its rate is increasing; the homicide rate is decreasing. As with other important health problems, most cases of fatal firearm violence arise from large but low-risk subsets of the population; risk and burden of illness are not distributed symmetrically. Compared with other industrialized nations, the United States has uniquely high mortality rates from firearm violence.

SUMMARY POINTS

1. The overall fatality rate from firearm violence has not changed in more than a decade.

2. Suicide is the most common form of fatal firearm violence (64.0% of deaths in 2012) and is increasing. Homicide is decreasing.

3. Homicide risk is concentrated to a remarkable degree among Black males through much of the life span. Mortality rates from firearm violence are very high and unchanged in this group.

4. Suicide risk is highest among White males beginning in adolescence. They also account for most fatalities from firearm violence and have increasing mortality rates.

5. As compared with other industrialized nations, the United States has low rates of assaultive violence...

...but uniquely high mortality rates from firearm homicide and suicide.

Well, the USA has a LOT of guns.

Accidents happen.

"What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty.... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins." (Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment [ I Annals of Congress at 750 {August 17, 1789}])

It was our liberty which made us historically prosperous. Notice how things are changing.

Right on Target Metastar!  Firearms are merely the tools that insure we Americans our cherished Liberty and individual freedoms , that we enjoy.  In truth Firearms are LPS's =Liberty Preserving Sticks. How can all of these anti gun zealots not understand history?  Stalin and Mao CONFISCATED all of those "evil guns" in their countries and what happened? Stalin kills 20-30 million, Mao kills upward of 80 Million, of their own citizens.

The second amendment was not placed in the bill rights for hunting. It was placed there to insure that WE THE PEOPLE would remain in charge of OUR government. It is necessary to thwart another Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Castro etc.

" The tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of tyrants and patriots."

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

Of course the anti-gun crowd is mostly "pro-choice". If they actually mean that then suicide is a "pro-choice" issue as well. Can't have it both ways. Eliminate that and a big chunk of the gun control arguement goes away.

From our friends at WHO (emphasis added)...

"Suicide by firearms is a highly lethal method, accounting for the majority of suicides in some countries, such as the USA (47). Available data show a close correlation between the proportions of households owning firearms and the proportion of firearm suicides (48). Legislation restricting firearm ownership has been associated with a reduction in firearm suicide rates in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom. Possible legislative and regulatory action to reduce firearm-related suicide includes tightening of rules on availability of firearms in private households and of procedures for obtaining licenses and registration; limiting personal gun ownership to hand guns; extending the waiting period for purchases; enforcing safe storage requirements; decreeing a minimum age for firearm purchase; and implementing criminal and psychiatric background checks for firearm purchases. Community education on regulations is also imperative in countries where guns are a familiar element in society (49)."

Do they include "suicide by cop" or "death by cop" in these firearm statistics?  For that matter, what is the percentage of police shootings in these numbers?  Probably a much higher proportion in the U.S. than in other "civilized" nations.  Let's take those out and re-run the numbers.

And in the "mortality rates for homicide and suicide," maybe Americans are just much better shots than the rest of the world.

"Compared with other industrialized nations, the United States has uniquely high mortality rates from firearm violence."

After a very short while it becomes simple to predict your way backwards from one sentence in a propaganda piece all the way back to the source

Since you compare apples to apples. Not apples to oranges. In this quote above the organization is trying to highlight something that doesn't compare equally as a means of sending a message. For example the usual propaganda points for various criminal organizations around the world working together for a common agenda. So let's say gun control, needs for significantly increased assessment of everyone for mental health, division by race as some of the keys. All points made directly, indirectly through statistic, charts or graphs to highlight these areas. Sound like the usual talking points of almost all false flags in all western countries lately?

So then you have a working theory of who is generating this and why. So then you look up the organization behind it. Founders, Management Team, BoD, backgrounds, schools, employment histories, etc. I found it interesting that the BoD link is dead. But it was easy enough to find out who they were. Any guesses?

You'll find the usual cast of characters up to the same old bullshit. But putting lipstick on the pig by creating a nice non-profit, all wrapped up in a nice package pretending to be all about public good and helping their fellow man blah blah

It really is amazing how many of these things are out there and operating. Probably somewhere in the 10's of thousands as an estimate. All doing their god's work. Their god that will fail as she always has and always will

These graphs are not comparing apples to apples.  If suicide is the highest form or firearm violence in the USA, then if you include suicide by other means from other countries, it is very likely that the US lead disappears.  Naturally in a country with strict gun control most suicides will be by other means, but gun control is not likely to reduce the suicide rate.

This would have been more helpful if the deaths from suicide were culled out to compare person-on-person violence with firearms.

It's 2 am
The fear is gone
I'm sitting here waiting
The gun's still warm
Maybe my connection
Is tired of taking chances

Yeah, there's a storm on the loose
Sirens in my head
Wrapped up in silence
All circuits are dead
Cannot decode
My whole life spins into a frenzy

Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse
Feels like being cloned
My beacons been moved
Under moon and star
Where am I to go Now that I've gone too far

Soon you will come to know
When the bullet hits the bone

Soon you will come to know
When the bullet hits the bone

I'm fallin' down a spiral
Destination unknown
Double-crossed messenger
All alone
Can't get no connection
Can't get through; where are you?

Well the night weighs heavy
On his guilty mind
This far from the border line
When the hit man comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated

Help I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse
Feels like being cloned
My beacons been moved
Under moon and star
Where am I to go Now that I've gone too far

Actually I'm all for suicide if that's what it takes. I don't have anything against guns per se but if I did own one, I can almost guarantee how the next incidence of road rage would end. I remember being in Chongqing, China last year and there was a gun homocide/bank robbery. The cops closed down the whole city to get the guy. But outside of a couple of western provinces I never see any violence of any sort, even at rowdy bars where everyone is drunk.

Right?

But wait, they all did.

Every last one of them was currently seeing or had been diagnosed by a shrink-therapist, was on or off their prescribed psychotropic medications or had been brought to the attention of Big Brother well before the dastardly deed.

I would just like to say to the author of the article -- "Urine Idiot."  He's taken a few factoids and charts and made self serving false conclusions and cherry picked his own interpretations.

I wouldn't call suicide by gun, gun violence. It's more like self-euthanasia and a painless way to go because you're dead before you hear the sound and I thought a lot of liberals were in favor of euthanasia, assisted suicides, and abortions to get rid of 'useless bread eaters', anyway. These bleeding heart hyupocrites don't get to have it both ways and complain when people decide they don't need assistance.

And Chart #1 with a cherry picked 'Summary' indicates "No change in the past decade in gun violence" -- but one could also summarize that exact same chart by saying "Gun violence has decreased more than 30% over the last one third of a century".

If you eliminate the real gun violence from blacks and hispanics one quickly realizes that gun violence among whites in the last two centuries in the USA and Western Europe. Blacks in Europe have similar crime stats as in USA but there are fewer to skew the stats. For example, in the UK, blacks make up 10%of the prison population but only 2% of the general population -- a 500% higher rate than whites -- the same as in USA.

Some of you aren't going to like this, but I was sitting in coffee shop one day and these guys came in wearing holstered guns.

I don't carry one and I didn't like the feeling, sitting there in a coffee shop with a few people who felt they needed the 'protection'.  I am not a prude when it comes to guns, bought my first Lee Enfield when I was 12.  I was 32 when I gave my last gun away.

You didn't identify WHO these guys wearing guns were CP, so the assumption is, just regular ole people. One is left with the conclusion that if they had been cops you would have felt very differently about seeing people armed.

Not everyone who looks at a Robo Cop (dressed in black, weapons hanging off every inch of their frame, as though they've just lept from the movie screen to the coffee shop table next to you) thinks that way.

Some see those as a potential threat to their life & liberty.

cherry picker,

I can't agree with your conclusion (last line) but I understand the sentiment of feeling uneasy.  I think it's part of our conditioning.

I have spoken with the most avid gun rights supporters and they have expressed similar uneasiness at seeing people open carry.  These same people have also expressed uneasiness with the fact that they felt uneasy about open carry.  It's just flat out unusual in our society but that doesn't mean we need to ban them--instead, we need to ask why we feel uncomfortable.

Personally, I think we need more open carry to change this mentality and conditioning.  Unfortunately, I think it's unwise for one reason:  it makes you the first target.  I'd rather have the tactical surprise of concealed carry.

Using the term:  "Gun Violence",  associates two completely seperate ideas in an Orwellian, non-sequitor manner.   That association is more dangerous to your own thinker than just a gun or a car or stairs.

Car Violence?  How many are killed by automobiles?

Stair Violence?  Those dastardly homo sapien killers?

Ambulance Violence?  Probably hidden amongst the other automobile stats; after all,  how many Gun Heros are silently included and used to support the Gun "Violence" stats.

Most of us do not like violence. Why do they associate this Orwellian term prejudiciously with guns when other high-horsepower objects are not commonly associated in this manner.  What's the motive?

There is no problem of gun violence. There is a problem of violence and it became pretty bad in Belgium recently but US has nothing to be proud of either. So let’s fold all those charts from this report into one and what do we see. We see dependence of level of violence, including state violence, on political and economical condition of a nation, such as, natural and man made disasters, wars, depressions/recessions booms and busts, all fueled by propaganda machine

But those are only variable/periodic components stimulating violence in society. So what accounts for secular component, almost unchanged for multiple decades?

In simple terms, it is simmering injustice down deep in the society which is fueling hidden, shameful communal/domestic violence, driven by moral and economic propaganda of rampant individualism, replacing direct intimate human relations with ones negotiated by money, physical and/or mental power and egoistic greed.

The system of beliefs in law and justice, equality of chances for success and definition of success itself, neutrality of government, freedom of choice, fairness of market system, independence, self sufficiency via hard work etc., was constructed for one purpose alone, to cover, under veil of propaganda, true face of economic, political social, cultural repression and exploitation we all suffering, a war of one human being against another human being, we suppose to fight till death, in very personal, intimate ways, as commanded by ruling elites.

We  really only differ in ways how we respond to same oppression. With violence as expected from us, or by rejecting violence and temper our ambitions for sake of peace.

So what about gun violence? When violence is diminished, gun violence will be diminished and popularity of guns will be diminished as well.

Yes, instead of looking at gun violence, let's look for the underlying cause of VIOLENCE period. But we won't do that because societal values implies social responsibility, which has been claimed sole proprietor by our progressive government. Why not ask WHY people feel the need to own guns (I know I do)? Yes, big brother is running this show, driving our values through educational indoctrination and every channel they can possess.

The charts presented do a good job of supporting the "low brow" point of view.

The author badly misinterpreted the charts.

It is also clear you have not read the many intelligent comments here.  If that is your mode of operating, why even read this or any other blog?

I'm not very uncomfortable with these charts. A rifle behind every blade of grass.

Everyone who blabbers about how hopeless the plight of the average American citizen has become is just kidding themselves. When the shit really hits the fan, armed Americans represent an *immovable force*... the largest insurgent army on Earth (by far) that would lay waste to any and all opposition. The concept of any domestic or foreign forces(s) ever occupying America at gunpoint is laughable. They'd be shot to pieces in short order.

Snipes: We're safe around here.

Connery: You call this safe?

Snipes: Rough neighborhoods may be America's last advantage.

Snipes: May I suggest a strategy? Don't stare at these guys. They don't like big arm movements. They might shoot you. Keep your voice calm... better still, don't say shit.

"A rifle behind every blade of grass."

That phrase is not applicable anymore.  We are not the agrarian/blue collar society we were in the 40s.  We certainly don't have cohesiveness as a society.  And, people have weak stomachs.  Most Americans would faint at the sight of chicken being slaughtered.  They're certainly not going to shoot another person.  A rifle behind every blade of grass does no good without a person manning it.  This country has a lot of firearms, but the number of households that have firearms has been steadily decreasing for decades.  Firearms are concentrated among gun-owning households having multiple firearms.  I disagree with your premise that the concept of an occupying force is laughable.  We are not living in the 40s.  Your neighbors are more likely to rat you out to gain "points" than they are to stand next to you and fight.  My opinion, anyway.

If the ignorance, criminality, and carelessness of others is grounds for violating my rights, I have no rights.

Finally, what possible reason is there for thinking that people in govt can run our lives with force better than we can live our lives ourselves? Most people who work for govt do so because they were starving to death in the real world. How many govts have there ever been that did not exoploit their citizens?

2nd amendment gun rights come from G-d, not the government. They are inalienable rights.

What does inalienable mean?

It means the government cannot abridge your rights.  Congress cannot legislate away your rights.  Chucky Shumer or Bloomberg cannot talk you out of your rights.

Say you don't want your rights?  Can you give them to Chucky Shumer? Can you "go all libertarian" and sell them?  No.  You're stuck with them.

What if I don't believe in G-d?  You're stuck with them.

If you can't enjoy your rights, your neighbor probably will, and there is nothing you can do about it.

The 2nd amendment gun rights are derived from the fact that the state militias were necessary to the security of a free state,,,it was added to pacify a few states that had misgivings about leaving the Articles:

" A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state" ....

then of course it naturally and logically followed that:

"the rights of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

The militia,,, Like everything else We the People have given up,,, required the Peoples participation which most wanted nothing to do with marching around and shooting guns once a month or so.

So the national government changed the constitution without amendment, re-configuring the militias out of practicle existance and inserting their standing army National Guard as a subsitute... and no one cared.

Then they removed the states participation with the 17th amendment... and no one cared.

Then they removed the Peoples money and replaced it with a private banks debt notes with the Federal Reserve Act... and no one cared

Then they made slaves of us by taxing our production and hard work with the 16th amendment... and no one cared.

Today, since the 1st part of the 2nd amendment was voluntarily given up by the lazy citizens of yesterday, they want to finish nullifying the second part. From governments viewpoint, it is only logical.

No dear readers, rights, god given or not, are not free and must be constantly guarded dearly and sometimes, unfortunatly, blood must be spilled to ensure the psychopaths we always seem to place in government know and keep their place. If one doesn't agree with these principles then one must accept the government and society sure to come about.

It is,,, always has been,,, always will be,,, our choice... individually and collectively.

I said that's great but why are yo crying?
She said that for all her life she was against guns but finally had to admit she had been wrong. It really tore her up.
To console her I said, "most of us who own guns never wish to use them on anyone. It's for protection pure and simple."

I also said welcome to the club.

Funniest thing about this is that she has a black belt in karate. Go figure.

Can we please stop with the comments here about the gov't trying to cease weapons or limit rights?  The EXACT OPPOSITE thing has occurred in the US the past 20 years.  There has been no meaningful federal law passed on gun restrictions in 20 years, states have massively expanded the rights to carry, and SCOTUS has overturned several gun bans/restrictions in the last decade.

Only delusional people who live in a pararrel universe act like it hasn't.  Gun rights and the ability to cover them are in some cases greater than at any time in US history and certainly anytime since the 60s.

The fact that regularly the same people attempt to break into your home and robbed you and are only defeated in their efforts by your resistance to repel them, does not minimize the risk or deny the attempt. There has been continual conversations by majority held houses of congress and the presidency to outlaw private gun ownership, even so far as to use the UN to advance these goals. The fact that they have not yet succeeded does not negate their goals. Without resistance we would have NO guns.

Make no mistake, they have every intention of taking our guns away and they will never stop. Ever. So there will never be a time to be complacent about one of the most important tenants of our constitution. It is there for a reason.  Be careful of being misled about statistics and charts and graphs and also stop repeating it. Nothing is believable any more. There have been significant restrictions to 2nd amendment rights in many parts of the country. They need be no law or even Supreme Court decision used to end these rights. All that is required is that local and state laws restricting these rights are allowed to stand. This has been what has happened to defense of marriage laws around the country, as every lawsuit put forward to stop local courts from throwing out local laws has failed to be heard by the Supremes. If the Supreme court refuses to hear a case, they have effectively passed judgement and we are left with no recourse. This is how the Federal government has defeated most of the constitution thus far, and with signing orders and executive orders becoming ever more contrary to the constitution, this problem will get worse.

You make a good point, however, you support my larger point: this article is crap because it's lacking the the finer scale information that gives context to the numbers. We decide morality by context; shoot someone and kill them--it's a homicide--if you do it defenisively and in a manner allowed by law, then you are 'good.' Shoot someone for the contents of their wallet, then you are bad.

Without that contextual information, these data are meaningless, or worse, distorted for political gain.

We should ban living. When you walk down the street, and some thug wearing a costume demands your papers, and beats you to death if you don't want to, he's the communist. Are you clear on what a totalitarian dictatorship looks like? It looks like kops killing with impunity (and a central bank to finance it). You're living in one.

No one is free to rob and brutalize me. I am very difficult to rob and brutalize. Why exactly do I need kops to charge me for checking my papers, writing me speeding tickets, and dgenerally doing nothing? Have you ever needed a kop? I have. Guess what, they don't show up to break up crime, that's in the movies, All they do is show up later and write a report, then do nothing, then charge you for it, then ask you for your papers.

Stop being a tool for the left.  It makes you look like a pussy.

I'm a tool for no one. And if you think I'm a pussy, you should see me in person. I look like the biggest pussy you've ever seen. But I have character, and honor. And I am full of surprises.

Just wait and see what the homicide rate is when the country finally goes broke and welfare dries up.  Except then the blacks will be killing whites, or that is the liberal unarmed whites that think they are protected with a 5 iron, or a phone call to a big fat assed cop sitting in a Duncan Donut shop.  I guess you saw the article on this site about the most obese professions?---cops!

Yep---The blacks totally wrecked a south Louisiana Wal-Mart in just a few hours when their welfare plastic didn't work.  Just think what is going to happen when you cut them completely off.  Gunfire will erupt across this country.  Will you be able to protect yourself?---Not if you live in Chicago, DC, Kalifornia, MA, etc.

"Except then the blacks will be killing whites"

Until Whites finally slough off their Jewish-imposed racial guilt. Once that happens it'll be a turkey shoot.

Abortion rates among blacks are sky high too. Add those into your satistics, but for God's sake never talk about it because you'll need to be reeducated by the Sharpton School of Sensitivity.

What the fuck does this have to do with Guns???????

It is very difficult to provide for a child if you cannot provide for yourself... so are you saying these pregencies should be carried to term so the government can take care of these children... or maybe we as a society should watch them starve???  Given a choice of these three options I would much rather see a pregency termated.

"the rate of unintended pregnancies was more than five times higher among poor women than among women whose income was at least twice the federal poverty level."

Be glad of those black abortions. Would you prefer to see double the numbers of 'yoofs' rampaging through the cities?

Suicide should be removed from gun statistics.  If a person wants to commit suicide, they will find a way, the gun is irrelevant. Knives, rope, pills, etc.

There are three kinds of humans- the sheeple, the sheep dogs and the wolves. Life can be explained as sheeple or those people compared to sheep in being docile, foolish, or those easily led who make up the majority of the population. The sheep dog protects the sheeple from wolves using power like police, government and religion. The sheep are preyed upon by wolves in guises of sheep dogs using power like police, government and religion.

A basic thriving society organization is simple. Most sheeple who live in an orderly flock (god’s rules) prosper. However, to remain prosperous the herd must find leaders (the sheep dog’s) to present gods rules for their offspring (family), sheeple must find leaders (the sheep dog’s) to keep gods rules of the pasture fair and balanced (government), and leaders (the sheep dog’s)  to find grass that is greener (job).

Sheep dog run institutions which kept America strong in the past like the government, banks, business, press, church, schools, police, courts and military are now filled with wolves. America’s big inner cities and suburbs have broken down as these wolves feed on the young sheeple. Without a strong foundation of institutions in America all kinds of violence including gun violence will become more prevalent in our sheeple. Firearms are not the problem they are only indicative that a once thriving society is crumbling…

Social engineers and statists of every strip will NEVER give up on disarming the american people. Never. Lies, damned lies and statistics. Fact is, a growing, healthy young society is usually a chaotic, brawling and frquently dangerous place to live, but also exciting and full of opportunity. On the other hand a sclerotic, senile, declining society is always obsessed with safety, unwilling to accept even the smallest risk. Everyone disarmed, drugged, compliant, grinning stupidly through the fog of their psychmeds. Real life and real living is risky, dangerous. So those of you who choose a living death, gorked out in front of your TV mind-control device, rejoice, your 'day' is at hand. After guns you can be sure it will be: computer driven autos (so safe), need a license for all knives (already happening in Braitain), no more mousetraps, basball bats, drain opener. Orwell couldn't even dream up this shit...

I am sure that the race-baiting maggots like Fat Albert and Jagoff Jesse would like to see those US firearm murder stats broken down by race... and by areas with anti-gun laws... wouldn't they????  Oh, I almost forgot... it is the fault of the PO-leece... right?

Summary: Old white guys are dangerous to themselves. Young black men are dangerous to everyone. But politicians are more dangerous than both of them put together.

I notice that the suicide rate has a nice hockey stick 2007 and beyond.  Why am I not surprised.  Thanks Fed, banksters, two party system knotheads, neocons, neolibs, ziocons and fascisti globalists everywhere.

In all respects, Canada looks like a pretty safe place... until you do a short search and find that its population density is 3.8 persons per square mile. US is 35/sq.mi.

Also, there are countries missing, like India. 421 persons per square mile, many in poverty, and it doesn't even make the assault rate chart? Seems there are possibly countries that don't report their figures. Or people living in them don't bother to report assaults.
