The Doom Boom: US Families Increasingly Prepared For "Modern Day Apocalypse"

Tyler Durden's picture

From the outside America may seem to be a land of endless optimism and confidence. But, as Sky News reports, an increasing number of Americans seem to think it is danger of falling apart, and they're preparing for the end. "We're not talking about folks walking around wearing tin foil on their heads,; we're not talking about conspiracy theorists. I'm talking about professionals: doctors and lawyers and law enforcement and military. Normal, everyday people. They can't necessarily put their finger on it. But there's something about the uncertainty of our times. They know something isn't quite right."

A now-privately-held ex-nuclear-missile base in Kansas has been turned into luxury "post-apocalyptic refuge for the very rich"

"It's an undergorund complex straight out of a bond flick"

As Sky News reports,

They call themselves preppers. Mainstream suburban Americans hoarding supplies and weapons while leading otherwise perfectly normal lives.

...

[they are] afraid of some impending catastrophe but also what that will do to American society.

"I think that is what I'm scared of the most," he told Sky News, "Not the actual events. I've already prepared for that. It's the aftermath, when there are no police, there are no military to protect us, we're going to be protecting ourselves."

The trigger could be a terrorist attack, a monetary collapse, cataclysmic failure in power generation, or a natural disaster. Preppers fear what comes next and have no faith in either their government or human nature.

"Once people use up all their resources, they're going to come after the people that prepared and had more resources. So basically we have to take care of ourselves."

...

"We're not talking about folks walking around wearing tin foil on their heads," Jay tells Sky News. "We're not talking about conspiracy theorists.

"I'm talking about professionals: doctors and lawyers and law enforcement and military. Normal, everyday people. They can't necessarily put their finger on it. But there's something about the uncertainty of our times. They know something isn't quite right."

Jay is a celebrity in the strange but increasingly mainstream world of preppers, writing prepper books and touring America, speaking at prepper expos where a bewildering range of survival supplies and techniques are on offer.

...

But it's also arguably a sign of a country coping with economic decline. The end of the American Dream has left people more uncertain about their future, and their country's.

Katy Bryson is in Jay's prepper network. Prepping, she says, puts Americans back in charge of their destiny.

"They're not in control of whether they lose their job or not but they are in control of whether they are prepared. So I feel like that's why the industry is just booming right now for preparedness," Katy added.

Of course if you come upon a bug out spot full of Lesbians, you boyz had better take cover.   Viscious women adept at using firearms and other weapons will probably overtake most unsuspecting male gangs using standard hetero intimidation tactics.   I'm being serious here... have you ever watched feral cats fight large dogs - it's not the cats running away in most cases.

It is just prudent to recognize that we will be and must be the first responders for our families, neighbors and ourselves. Police and Fire and other services will take reports and deal with the aftermath, probably overwhelmed by any wide scale disruption. We all need to reduce the stress on social services during a crisis by being prepared and responding effectively first. P.S. The sad reality is that in a major disruption, many will not be properly prepared. You must avoid the intersection of those with guns and no groceries and those with groceries and no guns. The ugly side of humanity may emerge after 3 days without chicken mcnuggets and no ac.

Well, we don't have a bunker, but we do have an entire small town in rural NY state where we know everyone with a full farm and enough hunters, medically trained folks and supplies to get through. Wish we had a bunker and we have talked about something like that....prep on!

I thought I was gonna get the crap junked outta my post with snide remarks about how .gov was gonna summarily FEMA the country and us along with them. They'll be in bunkers. Half the town is family too. If it's nuclear strikes, I'd say no one survives. We prep for grid down event. That is what will happen....I hope. Next prep we get is a solar generator for basics. Thing runs off 12v 110AH deep cell battery. Besides keeping up with food and basics, we should be good. We have about 15 horses for town transport. As much as I'd like to think it'll be a breeze, it won't. Been learning to grow food as well. Wife is an NP. We have med supplies. That's a biggie. Prepping and then falling to an infection would be ironic. I think we all know what's coming. The reckoning.

Prepping for a "grid down" was what I did. A week of grid down would be enough to have people killing each other in the streets when their I-crap stops working. Nukes and Bio-warfare aren't neccessary. Live away from the cities. Solar backup for my well was cornerstone for me living in a desert.

Big Berkey - really.  Stock up now on your "candle" filters (which last for years) and you are good to go. You can pick up a good size BB unit with 2 filters on Amazon these days for $300 +/-.  I've been using BB's up at my bugout spot for years to filter well water, but have used them with pond water and rain water with no ill effects.   If you are really paranoid, add a 10 drops of iodine tincture 2% to every 2 gallons of unfiltered water in the upper chamber of the BB (I never do and am still living to write this, but like I said, if you are really paranoid about water quality, the iodine will kill what the filters don't).   If you are worried about radiation, there are filters out there which fit the BB which supposedly rid the water of radioactive elements.   I don't own these and I figure if the water is irradiated to an undrinkable point then I'm probably already on my way to the grave due to radiation poisoning.

"Ours is 500 feet"

500'...wow. Solar is do-able with the right pump and a low gpm rating, a generator is probably more cost effective. Long term storage of fuel is the problem, so either diesel or propane is the answer. I have a dual fuel propane/gasoline generator for emergencies. Nice thing about propane is it's cheap and stores essentially forever and it doesn't wreck your carbeurator like gasoline.

It is rumored that some of the original Moses matzo was found in the Sinai and looked like the stuff you could buy at the supermarket. They also double as roofing material.

Funny thing is most of these prepper types will be the first to go.. survival is more than some MRE's canned food a gun and metals...it's a mindset and will slowly eat away at the flabby placid mindless spoiled murikan prepped or not... whats that saying ...  on a long enough timeline... you know the rest LOL.   hollywood and teevee have made evryone a "survivalist"  don't kid yourself I teach this shit and is sad to watch these flabby idiots in tears after 3 days without running water or powered appliances especially when the get woke in the middle of the night very un-expectadely ....  Like I said keep dreaming unless you live it you'll never make it.  If indeed it ever comes after 3 weeks 1/8 of the Pop will expire after 3 months 1/3rd are done for ...so for all you "doom" lovers best think twice or find a way to mentally prepare thats where the real prepping takes place.   Dark cold always looking over your shoulder rogue gangs mucking about children crying wife nagging you get the picture.. current life suck as it may is still way to cushy so cushy that even your imagination of a long term SHTF scenario is not even close ... Just remember I told you so and it's the truth.  It's a mental war once the shit hits if indeed it does, once again the only way to have a grasp and survive it is living it.   Suicide rates among collapsed "empires" has historically always been high...hmmm didn't you ever wonder why???

Lots of tough guys around here so I ask this ....How many of you arm chair warriors ever faced combat (not bragging up the ussa war machine here just an honest question) and of those who had to see the face of the man on the receiving end of that down range lead?   Now there's some "mental gymnastics" for you to ponder .... Like I said bunch of tough guys ...to much teevee and hollyweird...  once again theres more to this than some canned food water and metals.  Might wanna think through some of the shit ya spew and like I said I'm ready are you really???

Admittedly experience counts, but as we see daily there are plenty of murderous fucks out there with no training at all. The point you raise is valid and there is no doubt when faced with life and death situations you can have weapons out the ass and still freeze up and not be able to function. All lot of this is simply shooting...a lot., and conditioning your mind as to your purpose. Even in military training lots of people wash out and really just can't do it....but of course that's why they like young people, as they are a bit easier to manipulate. A sixty year old college professor or admin might have a harder time adjusting. When the shit hits the fan will be a test of our REAL preparedness, but I would most definitely give the navy SEAL or Ranger a better chance than most. My pessimistic side tells me that regardless, the least deserving will end up on top.

I think the whole tenor of your posts is pretty fcked up.  If people have not faced combat, what, they should lay down and die?  The Minutemen generally had very little combat experience, and if they did it was dealing with Indians.  Of course people who haven't been specifically trained would likely have a very steep learning curve in a worst case scenario.  And even if you did receive training and even experience, the mental edge will atrophy rather completely as time passes from said training and experience.   Add the fact of families as the primary social unit rather than a military combat unit, and there is a mountain of emotional worry that will in themselves likely contribute to less reasoned (tactics imbued) reaction to a given threat.  You seem to be sneering rather than providing the benefit of your training/experience.  JMO

I'm thinking I painted this with to broad a stroke... yes being able to "dispatch" someone is a hard pill to swallow thats only one aspect that you are focusing on... when I say it's a "mental game" I truly mean that in every sense of the word.  when all is lost (comfort wise) shit goes sideways really really fast kind of like a bad family vacation on steroids.  Do you see where this is going?  Angry cold/overheated family members chewing on your ass and each others , neighbors with no clue no water food or guns etc. etc.  The mental ability to "hold" all that shit together bearing down on you is stress most can't handle and don't know how to even begin breaking their "loved ones" let alone neighbors of it.  Hell most "families" can't cope as it is, as it stands these days the easy road is to blame the other guy or something else,  what I'm pointing out here is "How are you going to handle the brunt of all this shit ?"   the mental aspect of being in dire straits is more over whelming than most will admit to... even when pushed.  I'm not sneering... Just that I don't pull punches... tough love someone said .. anyway subjecting yourself to extremely stressful situations (not life threatining as I am not responsible for anyone doing stupid shit)  is key ie: If you smoke quit with no drugs or nicogum etc thats just a small stresser I can't write a book here just trying to get an idea across.  Like I said thinking food and guns and having some PM's is reassuring but only 1 tenth of the big picture.

Talk about tough love but absolutely true. As I teach my kids and build their preps, my overarching message is that we are planning for survival not camping. It is going to be a rough road with limited resources, medicine and help. But, at least getting started and learning and practicing is better than waiting for help which never comes, going out backward. If we can just convince everyone to get started with some basics, without scaring the crap out of them. Great New Year Resolution.

Just been thinking about how to get at them.  Have to know where they are first- Internet rumor mill is good for this.  Denver Airport.  Ozark, Arkansas.  If some town reports unexplained rumblings on a somewhat regular schedule that is a good clue too.  But what about all the other, more secret or remote locations?  Maybe the contractors will talk about the bases after the revolution.  Or maybe the Illuminati will invite them into the base.  They gotta have food/slaves/concubines/sacrifices/just someone to lord it over.  They will pretend to make it consensual.  Above the base entrance they will write "Abandon hope, all Ye who enter here" in Sumerian chicken scratches.

Suppose there are rumors of a base in the area.  How to go about finding it?  How to find all the secret exits, air vents, etc?  Getting any kind of image of anything underground is really difficult.  Maybe track micro earthquakes from rock settling, then make a GIANT metal detector coil and swing it around by helicopter?  Maybe use one of those vibrating trucks they use for oil exploration?  Any vets around here know how Halliburton looked for Saddam's hidey holes?

For power, a base could go for deep geothermal but they would have to ditch the waste heat somewhere.  Same with nuclear.  Question is if they ditch the heat in more rock (likely), in an underground river, or in vented air (unlikely- too obvious).

So what are the signatures to look for?  Odd seismic activity, limestone, underground rivers that become warmer or more polluted, anything that shows up like dog's balls on IR nightvision, major sources of carbon dioxide (need to detect its spectrum remotely- lasers?), caves blowing fetid air, tailings piles / dump trucks, mobile neutrino labs in case they have a nuclear plant, black helicopters, strange comings and goings, kidnappings, strange stories?

Just throwing out ideas here, looking for creative solutions, especially stuff that might be within the grasp of the county's best redneck mad scientist.  Haven't really thought it through.

What you need is engineering knowledge, recon skillz, a good pair of boots, and a team.

What you might want (in addition to the NV) would be dogs, thermal, or a software defined radio and antenna or 2. (in escalating terms of range/force multiplication).

Things to keep in mind and watch out for- building bunker is heavy business and construction materials (1000lbs/ft2 or a million pounds per 1000ft2 doesn't get delivered and installed just in pickup trucks.  Cement trucks (non-military) don't travel off-road.  Roads can be "erased" but the signs of their previous existence (or the damage done by Oshkosh HEMTTs wearing a trail) can't be erased.  Moreover, unless the bunker "residents" have land nav skillz and good boots themselves, they probably have a convenient mechanism of ingress and egress within a short distance of the primary entrance of which there should be at least two, along with at least two service entrances (i.e. air and exhaust).

When the US government collapses, the police, NSA, TSA, ATF, etc will go the same way as the KGB in Russia went. They become, because of their contacts throughout the country and the world, an organied crime syndicate.

The only way to deal with them will be to, either be a slave or to fight them (probably to the death).

The government stooges have the technology but the citizens have the numbers in their favour.

The one thing that might lessen all of this will be if the police, etc. stay home to protect their families.

Not at all what happened and there wasn't any 'Mad Max' civilizations or anything close to it in Russia from '89 throught the '90s.  KGB were mainly in the large cities and they just largely either got folded into the FSB, emigrated out, or went into private security aligning themselves with the new power structure which in many ways was that much didn't from the old.

Russia to attack the US 5 minutes later.  Plan accordingly.

Maybe Kansas is NOT the best place to be.  Especially if that site is still on Russian maps.  Or any place in the US.  Not that Canada is any better either in that scenario, given the flight path of nukes.

White people prepare.  Admit it, gentlemen.  The blacks will depend on the Gubmint who will direct the hordes at resisting white populations.  If this thing really falls apart do you expect ANYthing different?  The population will divide itself naturally along racial boundaries.  The whites and asians will ultiimately survive.

All right, let the down arrows commence.  Keep believing...Kumbaya!

There can be little doubt that if it unwinds, the police/military will be instructed to protect the weak and simple minded (minorities) first. White folks will get protection too, but it will just be protection from ourselves...you know, disarm an detain...to keep us from hurting ourselves. Safety First!

Strategic relocation requires without any equivocation to remove yourself from proximity to diversity/minority populations.  Not cause you don't fancy them, but because likely don't share similar values and well yes, they'll be the first marauder wave.

That's where my circumstances turn. I live in a suburb city with about 30% white population. I AM THE MINORITY. Have to say it does put some perspective on living as a minority and it really doesn't concern me typically, but my wife served on a city board and racism was the constant refrain for the black methodology for action. Don't get what you want and its racism...every damned time.

I strongly believe that demographics in such a situation will be an almost immediate bug out requirement.  I know people back in DFW that believe their Texas mansion on the couple of acres in a gated community in the exurbs is a bug out location.  They are outta their minds.  Remember 6.5 million in an area about the size of Israel or New Jersey.

Initially it was a lower density area but that has changed. Considered buying a bugout property much farther out but lack "domestic" support. Plus one of my best friends has a 12000sqft bug out home on 40 acres in the Colorado mountains so while it is some distance, its worth the trip. Fully stocked with EVERYTHING and remote. I will have to contribute however, which makes it even better.

Not so sure.  I think they'll all be same same color:  Crispy.  Or "Zombie red".

Ants, bugs and cockroaches should do well though.  Gators and reptiles could mutate to giant size.

North of West Palm is rural?   Yeah, right!  The Acreage, Loxahachee, and Jupiter Farms are abutted by McManse communities these days.   Same deal through the rural tier in Martin & St. Lucie and upward from there.   Heck, my bugout spot (which has turned into my 1/2 year + home) is about to get butt-F'd by a major development called Avenir (think Venice meets the Doral Country Club area on steroids west of the Turnpike and on the outskirts of the rural tier for another 20,000 residents).   There is very little which is rural in South and Central FL these days and those area which appear to be rural will be overrun by shocked city dwellers (or worse yet 3d world gangs originating from Miami/FT. Laud/ WPB/ Orlando/Tampa-SP/etc) in short order.

I lived in Lotsascracthee when all that was there was the post office, a bar and a bait shop.

More rattlesnakes and gators than people back then.

Lets just say between Pacing Park and the Cut.

Lots of farms ,nursey's ,smallholding and horse farms, not much else.Yet the convenience of modern life aren't too far away.

Funny you mention that I was at the range a year ago and a guy( a doctor) and his wife were there with an AR he just bought never owned a firearm in his life but felt the need that he and the wife had to "learn" how to defend their home, because of the state of the gov and the economy (his words not mine) anyway I found this out after relieving him of his firearm the dumb ass almost shot 2 of us from a couple of benches away.  After an 1/2 hour of showwing him how to load the mags and cycle the action use the iron sights he proceeded to hip fire the thing like some jack ass from a movie.  when the fool emptied the first mag my bud yelled clear cease fire I gave him my number and the numbers of a few other instructors and we left.  This is the kind of shit I deal with all the time.  How most of these twits haven't shot someone or themselves yet is truly amazing.  I don't believe in any kind of firearm restrictions but I do believe these "new" firearms persons should have atleast 2 hours of supervised training.  Hell I don't even hunt public lands for this very reason, that and have almost been shot numerous times, if thats buck fever imagine what will happen when stupid humans are running amuk...

The liberals greatest fear, and they helped make it come true. Thousands of dumbfucks with guns. If shit falls, I do not fear my government nearly as much as the local villains and dumbfucks shooting everything they see. It kind of bothers me at gun shows. I used to take my wife and she freaked at guys carrying guns around but I was freaked out by really weak looking people buying relatively high powered guns. Stopped a a gun shop this evening on the way home and there was two teenager knowitalls with their mom looking at an FN SCAR 308. Had to go...

I like the idea that there is some awareness out there, but most of it just seems like another fad to market off of. If people paid attention and we held our assholes accountable, we wouldn't need guns for anything but sport.

You're really off base... After eating the "whole critter" whats left gets made into stock, and after even the bones have been demineralized, the dogs get them, along with the parts that really weren't fit for human consumption in the first place.  Far more is "wasted" by the slaughterhouse factories making McFood for the masses.

You can make stock from the fish heads and bone, but depending on species, the scales can be inedible and have little practical use.

Never understood why buck hunters would want to sit in a stand all day and wait for a deer to walk by & then need to blast it with a high-powered rifle hoping it drops nearly on the spot.  Beyond boring. Grew up bow hunting and moving while you hunt was always a hell of alot more appealing to me including tracking the animal after you hit it.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until all the deceived ones get it.  Zionists (Cabalists, masons, illuminati, p.sion, synagogue of satan, etc) are from the tribe of Dan, not Judah.  Like you said, they are "liars" and that is their biggest lie.

Since the designation “Jew” belongs exclusively to the tribe of Judah, only the tribe of Judah is “Jewish.” Other tribes of Israel who call themselves Jews are appropriating to themselves an ancient birthright which is not rightfully theirs, for the Messiah would descend through the tribe of Judah. Revelation 2:9-10 refers to the synagogue of Satan as “them which say they are Jews, and are not.”

A lot of mott and baily castles were thrown up because the countryside was overrun with marauders. They seem to work pretty well after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Patton was right when the defense is thrown up against overwhelming forces with seemingly unlimited resources. Post collapse marauders will be less well armed and less well led.  It will not be a picnic but it will sort itself out in a year or two.  Small towns will organize and resist even here in central Florida.

Time to revisit the poem prose, Desiderata.

To me, the most profound line -

" And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."

 Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

we had a little taste of apocalypse in the aftermath of hurricane andrew.it never reached the insanity level of hurricane katrina but in the week it took to mobilize support services neighborhoods had set up security perimeters to keep predators away. if it had taken another week to get water and food there would have been violent chaos as the hungry scavenged for food. i read the same sort of scenario played out in the aftermath of katrina.

urbanites trying to escape the cities for greener pastures will likely be shot in most rural towns if they looked like they posed a threat. if you think the present .gov is insane anarchy will give rise to all sorts of idiots.

I was on Miami Beach during Andrew.   The next day, I and a few of my friends who'd stayed in my home decided to walk up to 41st St (Arthur Godfrey Rd) to just look around.  As we crossed Pine Tree Drive at 40th St, a guy with a strong NY accent pulls over, rolls his window down, and starts interrogating us as to why Pantry Pride (or was it Food Fair at the time - so long ago) wasn't open.   We all broke out laughing and seemed to spill out "we just had a major hurricane - nothing is open" to which he replied "in NY everything's always open" and drove off in a huff.  I thought of that guy when Sandy rolled through NY/NJ and had a chuckle at the thought that he might have been in that area for that storm.   I wondered if he learned any lessons from the aftermath of Andrew, but had the picture in my head that the dumbass (if still alive) probably was cursing at the air again about nothing being open.   Lesson here:  Most people are this guy - they never plan ahead and they never will.   These people will also be the first to die should the Shite really hit the fan.  As for the rest of us, it will be the luck of the draw regardless of how prepared you are.  If you are prepared and you bug in and are lucky not to be "gang raided" or bug out and are lucky enough not to be "eaten by Garth" (some of you will understand that reference), you may survive societal collapse; but even then, over time without modern amenities, even the best prepared will find life a lot more difficult than they ever anticipated while preparing for the shite to hit the fan.

I always laugh at preppers preparing for 'one big event' -- the reality is that no one knows what is going to happen.  You have to have four stages of prep --

1.  Bug In and wait out a hurricane, flood, blizzard, power outtage, etc that might last a few days

2.  Bug In and be able to feed and water yourself for 3 months to wait out Airborne Ebola, transit disruptions, mass riots in only certain parts of the country, or other extended by temporary issues that may affect food supplies or your desire to go out and get food.

3.  Bug Out and Evade, in case mobs and gangs come knocking - you will need well hidden caches of food and weapons and mobility (instead of bunkers) - again, temporary for a few months (you hope)

4.  After three months civilization is either restored, or you need to pull out long term preps from storage.  Some fools think that they can set up aquaponics, grow gardens, or raise rabbits or chickens now -- those are going to be raided by hungry gangs during the first three months.  Wait for the die off to kick in, then you can pull out your wheat grinders, heirloom seeds, etc.

You better have #1 covered and hopefully you have #2 covered.  The rest is only needed if you want to live in a post-SHTF world.

Gonna fight to the death for the hens.  Eggs as a supplement is pretty important.  Many in the rural Blue Ridge sport chickens.

Interesting.  Does that mean that you currently live in Piedmont Virginia or the Shenandoah valley?  I am considering these locations (along with West VA) as my "bug-out" locations, in part because I was raised in those parts (Albemarle County, VA).

Pretty interesting ways to cope, the Bosnian had the warlord strife and shares some good insight.

I'm more concerned with military police and government takeover than the people in my town.  I figure if I just put the mark of the beast above my front door they will me alone, since it implies I am one of them.

Town hall meetings should be held on the neighborhood level to organize patrols, sponsor swap meets, coordinate resources, provide charity, root out gangsters, and interface with whatever remnants of "established" authority are around.

When Americans cooperate they are a tough nut to crack, and grass roots democracy is the legitimate way to do so. We have organized plenty of governments time and again through our history. Get a Robert's Rules of Order and you're good to go.

No one here seems to mention how the Fukushima disaster affected their prep ...

Even if were talking about a quick economic collapse without wars or nasty bugs the outcome is still total chaos..

America has over 100 nuclear reactors wich will go bust in a few weeks without electrical grid backup and will emit radioactive dust for years...

I don't think people will be able to survive more than a few months out there even with a lot of good prep..

It might help to go as far away possible from nuke plants like in Patagonia or New-zealand ...

I don't know if  even that will help because of the  430 reactors worldwide that will make the atmosphere deadly to most life forms ...

They are within very sturdy concrete domes designed to contain them.  Whether all of them will fail or not, can't be foretold.

Uh, uh how about the cooling pools?  Those reactors will go full china syndrome if the rods are not pulled, that concrete will not stop them.

Sure, possible scenario.   You die then it does not matter any longer.  The next guy can use your preps.   But what if its not that scenario, and you live.  Unless you are thinking suicide (which is your option, of course, not mine) you will still need to live.  For me there are acceptable levels of life, none easy after a SHTF, but beats dying if I am still relatively healthy.  If you don't have a plan, please plan to get out of the way for those that do.  Don't forget, your government and military prepare all the time, why shouldn't you?  Its called self responsibility.

When those EBT machines go down and those folks can't get their meds, and dope, you better have some sort of plan.

I never said that it's better doing nothing and wait for the end ...

I have my own bug out plan somewhere deep south .

The concrete dome might be very sturdy but it's not the point. Fukushima showed that failure to cool down the rods can lead to massive steam pressure which will blow up the dome from inside.

They can open the emergency vents to release the pressure and the let the nuclear fuel melt on the concrete pool beneath the reactor .

But how many ingeneers and technicians are needed to manage a safe cooldown procedure ?? How many of them will just run away to protect their family or go nuts when they understand the magnitude of the problem?

And what about massive fires or mechanical failures that can't be repaired without any help from the outside ?

there's some other basic rules you need to follow, or should learn, whether your a prepper, or just preparing.

location, location ,location, i've got a good location, i'm miles away from the immediate fall-out zone.

you don't tell your kids, or friends, what, or where your supplies are, you play santa claus, wait till the kids are asleep then hide them.

rule of thumb, don't tell anyone you wouldn't give your bank-card pass-word to, what, or where.

partnerships, i've got a friend who lives in the closest city, 30 mi. away, he's got plenty of lead, and the toys to get it where he needs it, i've got room in my house and feeding one more i can handle.

may sound over the top but, you can't stand guard, or do little things that always will come up, 24 hrs. a day.

i've got a good generator, and fuel to last maybe 2wks. in the winter, maybe 3 wks. in the summer, and we're looking to doubling that run time, with both of us funding it.

chose your partners wisely.

Mr Dr Prepper,

Design , is not "prep", prep is what follows, by design.  In that specific regard, I've not set about to prepare for anything (of that nature...)  I've already set core assets out to Sea... the Harbor will be what it will be... by design, and not mine.
