It Wasn't North Korea Or Russia: Sony Hack "Perpetrator" Said To Be Laid-Off, Disgruntled Employee

Tyler Durden's picture

First it was, with "absolute certainly", North Korea. Then, out of the blue, an even more ridiculous theory emerged about the origin of the Sony hackers: Russia. Now, we finally get the truth, and as it turns out it was neither of the abovementioned sovereign actors who had nothing better to do than to hack movie scripts and racist emails: it was Sony's own disgruntled worker who was the source of the hack. According to Politico, FBI agents investigating the Sony Pictures hack were briefed Monday by a security firm that says its research points to laid-off Sony staff, not North Korea, as the perpetrator."

Researchers from the cyber intelligence company Norse have said their own investigation into the data on the Sony attack doesn’t point to North Korea at all and instead indicates some combination of a disgruntled employee and hackers for piracy groups is at fault.

But... but just a week ago the FBI was so absolutely certain it was North Korea it released the following statement:

Today, the FBI would like to provide an update on the status of our investigation into the cyber attack targeting Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). In late November, SPE confirmed that it was the victim of a cyber attack that destroyed systems and stole large quantities of personal and commercial data. A group calling itself the "Guardians of Peace" claimed responsibility for the attack and subsequently issued threats against SPE, its employees, and theaters that distribute its movies.

The FBI has determined that the intrusion into SPE's network consisted of the deployment of destructive malware and the theft of proprietary information as well as employees' personally identifiable information and confidential communications. The attacks also rendered thousands of SPE's computers inoperable, forced SPE to take its entire computer network offline, and significantly disrupted the company's business operations.

After discovering the intrusion into its network, SPE requested the FBI's assistance. Since then, the FBI has been working closely with the company throughout the investigation. Sony has been a great partner in the investigation, and continues to work closely with the FBI. Sony reported this incident within hours, which is what the FBI hopes all companies will do when facing a cyber attack. Sony's quick reporting facilitated the investigators' ability to do their jobs, and ultimately to identify the source of these attacks.

As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. Government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions.

So will the humiliation ever end? Or does Obama have to launch a "preemptive" nuclear first in addition to taking down North Korea's internet and cell phone service before he too admits his false flag-based foreign policy is an epic disaster?

To be sure, the FBI says it is standing by its conclusions, "but the security community says they’ve been open and receptive to help from the private sector throughout the Sony investigation."

Norse’s senior vice president of market development said that just the quickness of the FBI’s conclusion that North Korea was responsible was a red flag.

“When the FBI made the announcement so soon after the initial hack was unveiled, everyone in the [cyber] intelligence community kind of raised their eyebrows at it, because it’s really hard to pin this on anyone within days of the attack,” Kurt Stammberger said in an interview as his company briefed FBI investigators Monday afternoon.

He said the briefing was set up after his company approached the agency with its findings.

Stammberger said after the meeting the FBI was “very open and grateful for our data and assistance” but didn’t share any of its data with Norse, although that was what the company expected.

The FBI said Monday it is standing behind its assessment, adding that evidence doesn’t support any other explanations.

Of course it is: otherwise it would look like a total idiot. It still will, but in time the FBI hopes nobody will remember this entire unfortunate embarrassing incident, and can just back away quietly with a small footnote explanation on page 18.

Meanwhile, Norse is pretty adamant the FBI are a bunch of clowns:

"Whenever we see some indicators or leads that North Korea may be involved, when we follow those leads, they turn out to be dead ends,” Stammberger said. “Do I think it’s likely that [officials] have a smoking gun? … We think that we would have seen key indicators by now in our investigation that would point to the North Koreans: We don’t see those data points. So if they’ve got them, they should share some of them at least with the community and make a more convincing case.”

Bottom line: the hacker was a disgruntled employee, and the leaked email situation was promptly used by studio execs to dupe the idiot public into believing it was their sworn patriotic duty to watch a failed comedic flop, generating revenues of over $20 million for what would have been a total dud. Which is why expect none of this to get any media coverage.

In the meantime, Obama almost launched another war over yet another video. So generally par for the course, bad pun intended.

The humiliation, however, is that not only did North Korea troll Obama, it officially got the upper hand. End result, at least someone is having a laugh.

It is so much more cost effective to cut and paste 'primary' source talking points.

Superfluous things like fact checking, multiple sources, investigative reporting and particularly editing do not increase shareholder value a bit.

... the FBI's flawed forensics had been rampant in the past ... so there's really nothing spectacular about their "investigative" forensic procedures ...

... so, if you'd expect something other than boneheaded forensic errors that spanned two decades from these Flawed-forensics Bloody Idiots ... just ask them why they had to cut the FBI review short according to the linked articles herewith ... which includes this paragraph >>> "Last August, the FBI cut the review short because the agency wasn’t happy with the results, which are quite damningnearly EVERY criminal case reviewed included flawed forensic testimony."

Unfortunately 14 years is not enough.  In 1913 Congress succumbed and planted the seeds that have so far fully destroyed the US democracy, not only killed countless of our own young soldiers for nothing else but egotistic power of the few.  In this process they have also killed and murdered countless millions of soldiers and civilians in Europe, Middle-East and Asia.

The only hope we have is to reverse the 1913 decision.  If we cannot do it we are doomed to become just another third world warrior country guided through Congress by the untouchables, the "living Gods" that are delusional and want to own it all!

The hatred towards the USA out there is growing by the day.  When it reaches the boiling point we won’t have the numbers they have and it will be the end of America as we know it.

just read the fbi's press release, (colaboration, very interesting word, look it up).

is this their way of stating, this was not us, and were tired of being bitch boys for obama, cia, and the mic?

with the word colaboration, will this ensure an investigation of the, acts of war commited against n. korea, (the hacking, and dropping of power, and internet to a whole country)?

if nothing else, this gives putin more belivability in his statements of the propaganda being spread about him from the west.

i'm tired of being called unamerican, or pro-russia, i'm pro-america, so now someone please show me whats american, about whats taking place now.

no matter what the outcome of the airing, it doesn't bode well for the nato junta now ruling in ukraine, when first order of business was to start killing russian, and pro-russian citizens, in eastern ukraine, (didn't a little man with a mustache from germany do the same).

Aw, this is really gonna be a disappointment to Amerikan Patriot and the rest of his crew of anti-Russian neocon trollbots.  Seems like they owe Vlad a lil' pinch and tickle.  Maybe give his undercarriage a bit of the ol 'how's your father'.  Only fair, given the copious amounts of homoerotic ad hominem.

My goodness what's next?  Did Al Qaeda not attack us on 9/11 because they hate us for our freedoms?

Is Amerikan Patriot not a rugged American individualist, but the sort of fella who eats a pint of chocolate ice cream right after a tear-filled crescendo, furiously masturbating to the boyish sexuality of whoeverthefuck on MTV?

And what of Taia Global - 5604106 -  So oft quoted in the Diplomat and NYT and Jerusalem Times, so ready to mention the culpability of Iran and Russia in any neocon/militarist publication which needs a quote.

Will their use in such "journalism" be reduced?

You bet it won't.   And the same media will keep going to SITE, and WINEP and the a dozen other Zioconservative shams created to fabricate quotes to advance the MSM, neocon/ziocon narrative.

Let's recap:

First the N. Koreans forbid Americans to see bad movies
which raises the wrath of a nation dedicated to all free speech......and then......
N. Korea uses the M word (short for jungle monkey) which is forbidden to be uttered in this land-of-free-speech,   but then.......The FBI clams up in the face of expert evidence that the FBI (and jungle monkeys) are full of shit, and won't discuss its evidence that nearly took the land-of-free-speech to international nuclear war.

I'm starting to like these Norks a little bit...The fired Sony employees have a hit book and movie waiting in the wings, if land-of-free-speech-Hollywood will make it (but only IF Hollywood will say 'Jungle Monkey' on screen).

And, if you are really sure the Police / FBI / CIA / FEMA / HUD, etc. have your back, get out go to a theater to watch it.

Be a Patriot, damn it.

Any of you who didn't go shopping when we went to war in Iraq & Afghanistan after 9/11 - remember, this is your patriotic duty.  You now have a chance to repay your country for the thousands of dead soldiers, tens of thousands of seriously injured and maimed soldiers, and hundred of billions spent on frivolous wars.

Never, ever forget - They hate us for our freedoms.

Apropos of little - I watched "The Interview" last night, and this might invite some junks, but I thought it was actually pretty funny - a solid B/B+ comedy.   Really.   Admittedly, I was also having a few drinks [I'm in a random artisan Bourbon phase], but relative to most of the shit out there posing as comedies - this really was pretty decent.

I totally believe the FBI is lying because North Korea never launches unprovoked attacks nor ever engages in the hacking of companies. Right? Oh wait . ..

Computer security experts that don't have access to the computer systems in question are clearly more informed than security experts who do. Right? Oh wait . . .

The FBI is lying because the movie didn't in fact sexually mock King Jong-Un throughout nor was effectively political commentary on the 15 million malnurished North Koreans nor the concentration camps. Right? Oh wait . . .

Well at least the movie wasn't well recieved in China, NK's main protector. Right? Oh wait. Maybe the movie is a bit of existential threat.

We'll at least this true. In the age of cyberwarfare, there will never be suitable evidence of attribution in the court of public opinion. This unfortunately means that the cyberwarfare is going to be common.

After reading some of the details of this 'hack', I was SURE it was the work of someone either on the inside, or had detailed technical knowledge of their IT infrastructure/servers, ect.

I'm not so sure I would even consider it to be a hack. It's more like 'digital vandalism', using a malware package. They just used their knowledge/information and turned the code loose on them. I'm about positive it wasn't intentional to generate publicity for the movie, because of the embarrassing emails and such that got out there, particularly the emails regarding 0-Tard. No way in hell would a large corporation do that to themselves for a movie, or anything else. Someone about had to have administrative level access to their email servers or mail store backups to get those emails. Unless they were 'intercepted' off their network, which is unlikely because an IDS would have detected such activity. (surely they use some form of intrusion detection)

NK just makes for a convenient scapegoat for our government since they are always around the top of our shitlist, and the people inside of Sony would love to be able to use them as a scapegoat as well. Especially their internal IT folks. When they go looking for scalps on the inside, as an IT person, I'd LOVE to be able to say that our system was attacked by another NATION, rather than broken into by a former, or disgruntled employee.  You can be SURE that lots of people working at the corporate level of IT at Sony have updated resumes right now. lol

Those cunts at CNN, ran this North Korea story into the ground, THEN switched to Russia did it. Now we are back to who really did it. Notice this example of CNN:

MH-17 shot down over Ukraine.

CNN: "Russia did it on ordes of Putin"

later on

CNN: "Russian rebels did it with missile provided by Putin"

later on:

CNN: "Russian rebels did it with captured Ukie missile"

later on:

CNN; "SILENCE"

See a pattern? When facts become known they change their lies. As the absolute facts become known they fall into "Dead Silence".

Now we see an American employee hacked SONY. Will silence greet this revelation? After hours and hours of CNN breaking news and dozens of American officials interviewed. Now it is clear an American did it? I think silence is in order.

I think you are seeing more than what is there. Todays update, leaked to multiple news agencies, is that North Korea paid (possibly with arms) another entity to help with the attack. I don't see any information thus far that that entity was a US citizen. To be frank, this is still pretty consistent with the original story.

The "Sony Hack" looks, smells, and acts like Sony's marketing campaign.

Movie Studios have a concrete formula

that the marketing budget for any film will be 50%

of the Production budget. Since the budget for the

"Interview" was $44 million, Sony would have to spend $22 million on a marketing campaign. That means for the last few months we would have been bombarded by a cheesey marketing slogan like, "This is not your Grandfather's Bok-Choy", or "It's Go time in Pyongyang".

The point is, THERE WAS NO MARKETING CAMPAIGN FOR THIS FILM,

other than the comments that we have been bombarded with by all mainstream media that North Korea is to blame. Putting the blame on NK looks, smells, and acts like a Marketing campaign, and when you add the fact that the first few stories about this quoted NSA spooks, so the FEDS get to bolster another fake boogeyman against the US, and here is the the third win for Sony: The major studios have known for years that the big screen revenue is declining sharply, and that Internet Premieres are inevitable. This way Sony gets to cash in on an internet Premiere without further raising the ire of the theatre owners, which have been clinging to big screen releases as their last hope, This scenario is win/win/win for Sony and big brother. Don't forget that SONY stands for Standard Oil of New York, which is Rockefeller, one of the original Robber Barons & Banksters.

In addition, the absolute #1 all time favorite thing for Studio Execs and film producers to do is to rag on actors. I can't emphasize this enough. So when Scott Rudin gets to rag on actor Kevin Hart for refusing to do publicity for a movie that he was paid $3 million for, and Amy Pascal gets to rag on Angelina Jolie, this becomes a win/win/win/win scenario for SONY & Big Brother. But since this info was "hacked", Scott and Amy get to hide behind their claim that it was initially a private conversation. This is exactly how producers operate.

Regardless of SONY's intentions, almost everyone with any critical thinking skills has to admit that the "SONY HACK" has become the de-facto marketing campaign for the film, "The Interview". Mission accomplished.

Hollywood is very tightly controlled by the powers that were, perhaps the most controlled after the military, politics, and the banksters. There is a lot of evidence that the "Sony Hack" was actually Sony's marketing campaign.

It was the NSA. Obama acted on the FBI info. If there was not prior knowledge then there probably would have been prudence excercised. Instead they attacked NK's internet.

Either they really are reckless or this was all part of an orchestrated plan.

I say it was likely the NSA and the quick action against NK proves it....or they are just sloppy insane politicians.
