United world leaders in Paris today... But what exactly are they all looking up for?

h/t @Zeemy_

Trying to spot Air Force One?

As The Blaze reports, world leaders linked arms and marched together at a unity rally that numbered more than 3.7 million people. Among the attendees were Angela Merkel of Germany, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, King Abdallah of Jordan and the brother of the Emir of Qatar, marching with French President Francois Hollande. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas attended, walking feet away from each other...

But...

President Barack Obama did not attend Sunday’s massive march in Paris to honor the victims of last week’s terror attacks, and the White House is not explaining his absence.

Has anyone checked the golf course?

*  *  *

Europe - United...(just don't mention Russian sanctions, sovereign QE, or budget deficits)

*  *  *

What we find remarkably ironic is Ukrainian President Poroshenko's appearance...

...'unified' with his European pals over the need for Freedom of the Press... when he just established 'A Department of Truth' to ensure the press reports just what he wants (and nothing else)?

Of course, he's not alone... as @DanielWickham93 explains...

Obama's royal retinue of several hundred, security for all, and 3 airplanes of equipment for overseas trips could never be arranged in 3 days. I'm sure Secret Service nixed the idea.

Its the downside of running an empire.

There has been strong opposition against installing the @Department of truth@ as you call it. FYI 2015 budget has roughly 2.4 mln USD for this department operations. How much of a propaganda and jorno oppression can be done with this tiny office? Free press is one of very few achievements this country has made, new pro-European parliament will not let Poroshenko screw this.

... where's Barack?

... he was about to tee off, when he gets tapped on the shoulder. A deaf-mute hands him a notepad, asking if he could play through. Barack refuses and tells him to wait his turn. He whacks his tee shot and strolls up to his ball, when suddenly, a ball hits him on the back of his head, knocking him out. When he finally comes to, the deaf-mute is standing over him, holding up four fingers.

If this Daniel Wickham guy on Twitter is to be believed, the "world leaders" represented in the march sure have some 'splainin' to do for their crimes against journalists and innocents.

Gotta give Wickham credit for using the indiscriminate NATO bombing of Serbia in '99 as #12 on his list.

For outside the U.S. it (not Iraq) was is viewed as the first really flagrant use of NATO (93% U.S. military hardware from what I read somewhere).

These hypocrites walked in the march for 15 minutes. Good opportunity to score politically.

The European leaders failed to protect their citizens from these crazy returnees from the ME. Why were their passports not taken? Why were they not put in jail? These leaders should have develop the legal framework to do this. In the past in Europe when someone joined a foreign fighting group they would lose their nationality. Why not now?

Glenn Greenwald wrote a phenomenal and thought-provoking piece on "free speech", where he puts the shoe on the other foot and strikes a righteous blow for "western values".

https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2015/01/09/solidarity-charlie-hebdo-c...

"When we originally discussed publishing this article to make these points, our intention was to commission two or three cartoonists to create cartoons that mock Judaism and malign sacred figures to Jews the way Charlie Hebdo did to Muslims. But that idea was thwarted by the fact that no mainstream western cartoonist would dare put their name on an anti-Jewish cartoon, even if done for satire purposes, because doing so would instantly and permanently destroy their career, at least"

"Is it time for me to be celebrated for my brave and noble defense of free speech rights? Have I struck a potent blow for political liberty and demonstrated solidarity with free journalism by publishing blasphemous cartoons? If, as Salman Rushdie said, it’s vital that all religions be subjected to “fearless disrespect,” have I done my part to uphold western values?"

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 06:34 | 5650623 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

truly excellent piece by Glenn Greenwald, +1

"Some of the cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo were not just offensive but bigoted, such as the one mocking the African sex slaves of Boko Haram as welfare queens (left). Others went far beyond maligning violence by extremists acting in the name of Islam, or even merely depicting Mohammed with degrading imagery (above, right), and instead contained a stream of mockery toward Muslims generally, who in France are not remotely powerful but are largely a marginalized and targeted immigrant population. "

agree, there. some of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons are offensive for offense's sake, and bigoted

some of those Charlie Hebdo cartoons ought to be restricted in a way similar to pornography, imho, instead of being praised as Great Achievements of Free Speech

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 05:54 | 5650657 smacker
smacker's picture

Indeed. there are few better examples of how Western nations have been brainwashed, conditioned and controlled by many national laws than to look at the free speech issue regarding Islam and Judaism.

With Islam, it's fair game to churn out the most offensive cartoon imagery imaginable and proclaim that it's "free speech". Witness the huge numbers protesting in France and elsewhere this weekend.

With Judaism, any critical mention of Israeli policy towards Palestine and elsewhere, its control of the MSM in many Western nations, its effective control of Wall Street and the financial/banking system, its effective control of US Foreign Policy, or of Zionism in general, is immediatly dismissed as "anti-semitism". As we know, this is why any politician, journalist or public commentator who values his career will never indulge in mockery of Judaism. It became a no-go area decades ago.

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 07:37 | 5650713 Wahooo
Wahooo's picture

By censoring ourselves around judaism and islam, we eliminate a powerful tool for keeping those two sides from warring. With no criticism, those two will grow unfettered.

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 08:36 | 5650782 smacker
smacker's picture

You may be right. One of the major reasons for Western self-censorship over Judaism (this largely means Israel), is that Israel is a terrorist, pariah state which was created based upon a huge pack of lies and Western misjudgement & collusion in appeasing Zionism (read: USA & Britain). The truth is that few people in Israel are descendents from that sandpit; they are not bloodline jews. So Palestine is not their ancestral home and they have no God-given right to claim it as their homeland.

Nobody in the West has the guts to admit any of that, let alone knows how to deal with such a catastrophic mistake when these same jews control Western media and US foreign policy. The Western band-aid solution is to pass domestic laws to shut people up/shut down debate to brush the problem under the carpet.

Since Palestinians are determinded to regain control of their own country and Israel is determind to do the exact opposite by creating a Greater Israel, I cannot see any peace settlement in the foreseeable future. The two-State solution would depend very much on where the borders are drawn.

Dunno where Obola was (golf course?), but Cameron was there for sure.

And was it not utterly disgusting that Poroshenko and Netanyahu were there? And the brother of the despotic Emir of Qatar? The only person missing from the gathering was Tony Blair.

IMO, by any reasonable definition of "terrorism", every one of those leaders is a terrorist.

right you are, Cameron was there, in a different "line of solidarity". my bad. when is Tony Blair ever going to face a tribunal? best together with Dick Cheney?

the problem is that the very application of that word "terrorism", lately, had been anything but... reasonable. it is becoming an empty word, another victim of all this

nevertheless, diplomacy starts with meetings, and I prefer meetings and diplomacy first, before all other "action". in other words, I abhor those "why are you meeting that bastard?" talk

The French will "march" for anything but not one of those people would take a bullet for these "principles" they so finely espouse. No doubt Charlie Hebdo will be France's best-selling newspaper next week ?

This is pure displacement - keep the people occupied with something organised - just as the British created a Cenotaph in London in 1920 to focus the grieving for the war dead on London and to channel the anger at the mass-unemployment of veterans, the Civil War in Ireland the the trades union disputes - the fear of revolution was too great and a Firearms Act 1920 was passed controlling guns and ammunition.

This is just the same kind of organised, channelled, popular "uprising"....they learned it all from the way they handled the death of Diana and used media manipulation to co-opt the populace the the agenda of the state
