And the wealthy men were enthralled by Chris Kyle...The American Sniper

hedgeless_horseman's picture

I was reading Tim Knight's post on ZH about Perfect Palo Alto, and teen suicide in America.

The heart of the issue isn't the fact that this one railroad crossing is or isn't guarded by someone. It has to do with what the kids think they have to "achieve" to be worthwhile.

This made me think about the movie, American Sniper, and the article I read in D Magazine about the subject of the movie, Chris Kyle.

I posted this:

There is hope. Those kids can always join the military and kill some men, women, and children that are just trying to defend their homeland from foreign invaders. This may delay suicide by a couple years, not to mention the 10% discount at Home Depot.

Who knows? If they kill enough, there may even be a book or movie deal and good times at NFL games with hedge fund managers.

I suspect that Tall Tom was referring to another ZH article in his reply:

Is 1628 the magic number? I gotta know...I gotta know.

That way they can feign remorse while bragging about the body count...

Makes for a great book and TeeVee time too.

Below is my response to Tall Tom, which I have now moved to the ZH Contributors blog in the hope it may spur some conversation on this sad matter.

160 confirmed kills has been the magic number in the past.  However, as Kyle Bass might say, past performance does not guarantee future results.

Bass invited Kyle to live at his house with him while Taya finished selling their place in San Diego. He introduced Kyle to as many “big money” people as he could. And the wealthy men were enthralled by Chris Kyle. They loved being around the legend. They loved hearing his stories and invited him to go hunting on their ranches. Bass would hold an economic summit every year at his ranch in East Texas. He would kick off the festivities by introducing his sniper friends.

“I’d have Chris and other SEALs come out and do exhibition shoots,” Bass says. “They would take 600-yard shots at binary explosives, so when they hit them it’s this giant explosion that shakes the ground.” He smiles as he tells the story. “For all the people that manage money all over the world and on Wall Street to come to Texas and see a Navy SEAL sniper shoot a bomb, it’s about as cool as it gets.”

I wish I could get Kyle Bass and all the people that manage money all over the world and on Wall Street to watch this 18-minute video by Sam Richards.  Maybe then they might begin to understand why Chris Kyle was killed by another veteran, and why more US soldiers are dying from suicide than are killed by the enemy

And maybe then Wall Street and The City might decide to direct their whores in Washington and London to get our sons and daughters out of Afghanistan, which is the longest war in American history.

Now, that would be about as cool as it gets, in my opinion.

For those that think this is a derailing of the Palo Alto suicide thread, just think for a moment about Tim's point in the article on Palo Alto.

"It has to do with what the kids think they have to "achieve" to be worthwhile."

What American Sniper Chris Kyle "achieved" to become a hero is not so vastly different than what Russian Sniper Vasily Zaytsev "achieved" to become a hero.

Read these two books if you want to better understand.

http://www.amazon.com/Stalingrad-The-Fateful-Siege-1942-1943/dp/01402845...

http://www.amazon.com/American-Sniper-Autobiography-Military-History/dp/...

However, the morality of a nation matters.

The morality of a fight matters, as was taught to a young Chris Kyle by his father, and to me by my father.

It always has.

It always will.

As Bastiat says in, The Law:

Each of us has a natural right — from God — to defend his person, his liberty, and his property. These are the three basic requirements of life, and the preservation of any one of them is completely dependent upon the preservation of the other two.

We do not have the natural right to attack others, imprison others, and to take or destroy others property...even if it is profitable to do so...and even if not doing so may endanger our nation's ability to enforce the petrol dollar.

Get us out of Afghanistan.

Get us out of Iraq.

Get us out of Syria.

Get us out of Bahrain.

Get us out of Saudi Arabia.

Get us out of Yemen.

Get us out of Ukraine.

Stop the drone war.

Peace be with you.

I remember it like yesterday. It helped influence my beliefs.

Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee

http://alphahistory.com/vietnam/muhammad-ali-refuses-to-fight-1967/

Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?

No, I am not going ten thousand miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would put my prestige in jeopardy and could cause me to lose millions of dollars which should accrue to me as the champion. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is right here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality…

If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to twenty-two million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. But I either have to obey the laws of the land or the laws of Allah. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail. We’ve been in jail for four hundred years.

What's next - gonna tell me Alvin York was an asshole too?

Wed, 01/28/2015 - 10:07 | 5715395 wtf1369

As I understood the York story:

1. He was drafted in 1917.

2. He left the Army as soon as he could to return home to start his family.

3. His CMH was awarded for killing 20 and capturing 132.

Whatever Kyle was, he wasn't York.

So he wasn't a tool for the elitists that got us involved in WWI? Why were we in that war again? Who attacked us? Shouldn't he have known it was a bogus war for the US to be in? By same standards used by people on this thread for Kyle he was just another murderer too.

Lot's of selective empathy on this thread.

"Same old shit, different era"

Agreed but there's a difference between being drafted and volunteering multiple times. Enlisted personnel like Kyle don't serve 10 years without raising their hands multiple times.

Contrary to the movie script about him, he was being pressured to be a conscientious objecter by his pastor and family, but felt a patriot duty.

So in essence - he did volunteer instead of opting for the CO.

C'mon folks. Military people kill people, that's their job. Some of them are assholes and some not, but one thing is the same - they are doing the war-mongers work for them whether out of feelings of patriotic duty or because they like killing. Propaganda works more on some people than others.

Don't focus on the messengers like the elites would want - focus on them and why they put men in harms way for their own selfish interests.

To be clear Dex, I don't have a bromance for York, Kyle, or any other soldier/jarhead/operator. My initial response was to your comment that seemed to compare Kyle with York. I stand by it, the draft was a much different prospect than our modern all volunteer force. Oh, and there were plenty of conscientious objectors suckin shit in Vietnam from what I've heard.

Uh, so Chris Kyle wasn't there to rack up a big kill score. He was there because he thought he was protecting people back home. Now, he was wrong, but that isn't the point.

Someone shooting a bomb at 600 yards is badass - hands down.

That being said, if we weren't in these wars, then Chris Kyle would have just been shooting deer and not people, because he wouldn't have felt that his talents were needed!

Let the first timers get so many words equally to make their point. Let a rating system sift out the worthy applicants to make a guest post.

Do a new one every week by a random member with enough credits to post. Fairness. And allow us to post some pictures for illustration as long as it's not horrible porn pics or fat person on rascals pics.

however, allowing everyone to post photos would be an invitation to disaster. with that said, if those with photo posting privileges would exercise a bit more discretion with picposts in the comments section for threads that they have not authored, it would be a small but powerful gesture in the responsible exercise of privilege.

i write the above with a far more positive opinion of the contributions of those discussed than you seem to have.

Nice post. For anyone critical of you, I hope they watch the Sam Richards video. He did a great job explaining why terrorists do what they do. Empathy can go a long ways towards peace. Of course the Washington Maniacs know this, so they do their best to keep sheeple from thinking about that and instead, get them excited about blowing things up. It worked with Kyle Bass.

Why don't you just trott over there to ISIS land and try out some of that empathy on those folks.

I think the reality is that Americans are afraid. Ever since 9-11 people have been trying to come up with every "empathetic"reason as to why the Muslims would attack us and immediately turned the blame on Bush, even though he had only been in office less than a year.

People can not, will not, accept that another person simply wants them dead. They will rationalize and empathize their hearts away to understand and come up with a way to solve it, to neutralize the threat. We went to war and many supported it initially in great hopes it would eliminate the threat quickly and cleanly.Once that started to become obviously wrong, the next step was to blame those who wanted the war, they were the ones who brought this down on us. Since then, this feeling has grown, all the while the radical Islamists have repeatedly told us that no retreat, no surrender will satisfy them. They line up their own people who have done nothing against them other than to not accept their doctrine, and casually shoot them in the head...or saw it off. But we deny. They are fake, or CIA, or Massad, or they just simply deserved what they got. Well folks, we can continue on and you know, and I know, they will not stop. We can hang Bush and Obama in front of the White house, and they will still keep coming. We can burn our churches and behead our priests and they will still keep coming. We will prosecute anyone who defames Mohamed and they will continue to come. They say they are killing us because we invaded their lands, yet they are invading ours, in America as well as all of Europe. Whats up with that? Is their some holy Mosque in France we haven't heard about that they are reclaiming?

Denial is a terrible thing to watch. We see it every day on our business channels and lament and the weak and simple minded as well as the corrupt. But radical Islamists are butchering people and we empathize. WE EMPATHIZE

Jesus christ...as I mentioned in another post, do you REALLY think that the "radical Islamists" just decided one day to put blindfolds on, open a world atlas, put their finger blindly down on the map, and then, when their finger landed randomly on the United States, said, "Okay, we're going to attack THOSE people"? Do you REALLY think that's how things happened? Why aren't the evil radical Islamists attacking the Uruguayans, or the Poles, or the Finns, or the Mexicans, or the Portuguese, or the citizens of scores of other random nations? Just our bad luck, I guess? You can't be serious--you're either lying, deluded, or stupid. Which is it?

You think they can't prioritize their victims? Are they not threatening to kill a Japanese citizen held captive right now. Do they not murder, brutally, their own people for simply a difference in TYPE of Islam?

Are you FUCKING BLIND?

Have they not attacked Spain and Germany and now France? Is there any group that they haven't attacked?

Jesus Christ is RIGHT! Take off your blindfold and ditch your "hate America first" badge and see which way the wind is blowing. The people living in these hell holes know what the problem is...its their fucked up insane "religious leaders". And yes they hate us as well for stirring them up. Most of those people live with their heads down and in constant fear of saying the wrong thing, and like you, care not for principle or even freedom, they only live in fear and the easiest and most immediate path to survival is to not piss these folks off. This is what most Americans want now. They realize that we cannot...no, will not defeat these people. These people that our president will not even refer to as what they proudly call themselves, Muslim extremists.

And also with you.

I browsed through the comments, adding a little green arrow here and there and thought I ought to stop there. What else could I add to them that hasn't already been expressed eloquently? Not much, except perhaps I learned a long time ago that such intangibles as empathy are the building blocks in the procession from knowledge and intelligence to wisdom - a state I am very far from, but to which I strive. The ability to put oneself in another man's shoes, walk his path in life, see from his eyes, feel from his heart, together with the ability to hold two or more opposing views in your mind at the same time, is not only essential in strategy but of enormous benefit in predictive reasoning for commerce and business.

In any event, the premise of the empathy video is kind of flawed. Their belief system keeps them living is the 7th century and accepting the oppression of their own elites. The more I read alternative reporting of Kris Kyle's exploits in Iraq the more disgusted I get - not only with the mind-set Kyle, and of those like Kyle, who view(s) murdering women and children as "fun" and the "best time of my life" (his quotes - not me paraphrasing), but with the inordinate number of Americans who view his actions as heroic.

The MSM obviously plays a HUGE part in this scam by the production of constant propaganda via; 1) Sports - the flags, honor guards, "American Hero's", "Support our Troops", etc. before, during and after virtually every game - particularly in the NFL which is watched by +60% of the 17-50 year old age group in the USA, 2) the Main Stream "News" - do I really need to describe the blatant propaganda spewed by channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, etc.?, 3) Video Game Manufacturers - Check out games like "Call of Duty" and that specific genre for propaganda geared at de-sensitizing people to the act of killing and violence.

There are more avenues TPTB use to promote their war agenda but IMHO these three are the main ones used to turn guys like Kris Kyle from a psychopathic murderer to an "American Hero" in the eyes of a good portion of the American public.

FWIW - I am not a peacenik, nor would I classify most of my world and domestic views as "liberal" (I hate political labels to begin with).  I own quite a few guns and know how to use all of them very well.  The bottom line is you don't have to be a card carrying liberal, anti-war activist to strongly disagree with; 1) the actions of our soldiers like Kris Kyle or 2) the (positive) reaction of a large portion of American Society when his story of murder by ambush is made into a book and movie.

Remember that Marine Corp General Smedley Butler, TWO TIME recipient of the Medal of Honor, said it best: "War is a Racket".

As Smedley's ghost I must comment that War is a Racket goes no where near the thrust of this article or your comment. Not commenting either way. War is a Racket is an indictment of the bankers and military industrialists (albeit before Ike coined the term). Remember please that Smedley's most unsung act was to out the banksters who tried to get him to bring down FDR and the government in a Fascist coup. Whole episode got buried.

Yeah; get it straight for once; killing people is fun; a lotta people like it. They're not too bright, and what have you, but they like it; and that's why they do it. go in the Bar outside Ft. Benning and listen. They laugh about it; it's fun. If you don't get that straight; you're never going to figure out what's going on. People are complicated, and they're not all civilized; or smart, either.
