Gallup CEO: "America's 5.6% Unempoyment Is One Big Lie"

Tyler Durden's picture

The biggest threat to a corrupt regime is when truth moves away from the "conspiracy theory" fringes and into the mainstream. Which is why we thank Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, for daring to tell the truth to those who care to listen.

Posted first on LinkedIn

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment

Here’s something that many Americans -- including some of the smartest and most educated among us -- don’t know: The official unemployment rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, is extremely misleading.

Right now, we’re hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is “down” to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.

None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you’ve stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn’t count you as unemployed. That’s right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren’t throwing parties to toast “falling” unemployment.

There’s another reason why the official rate is misleading. Say you’re an out-of-work engineer or healthcare worker or construction worker or retail manager: If you perform a minimum of one hour of work in a week and are paid at least $20 -- maybe someone pays you to mow their lawn -- you’re not officially counted as unemployed in the much-reported 5.6%. Few Americans know this.

Yet another figure of importance that doesn’t get much press: those working part time but wanting full-time work. If you have a degree in chemistry or math and are working 10 hours part time because it is all you can find -- in other words, you are severely underemployed -- the government doesn’t count you in the 5.6%. Few Americans know this.

There’s no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed, amounts to a Big Lie.

And it’s a lie that has consequences, because the great American dream is to have a good job, and in recent years, America has failed to deliver that dream more than it has at any time in recent memory. A good job is an individual’s primary identity, their very self-worth, their dignity -- it establishes the relationship they have with their friends, community and country. When we fail to deliver a good job that fits a citizen’s talents, training and experience, we are failing the great American dream.

Gallup defines a good job as 30+ hours per week for an organization that provides a regular paycheck. Right now, the U.S. is delivering at a staggeringly low rate of 44%, which is the number of full-time jobs as a percent of the adult population, 18 years and older. We need that to be 50% and a bare minimum of 10 million new, good jobs to replenish America’s middle class.

I hear all the time that “unemployment is greatly reduced, but the people aren’t feeling it.” When the media, talking heads, the White House and Wall Street start reporting the truth -- the percent of Americans in good jobs; jobs that are full time and real -- then we will quit wondering why Americans aren’t “feeling” something that doesn’t remotely reflect the reality in their lives. And we will also quit wondering what hollowed out the middle class.

***
And since we never tired of showing the "job recovery", here is what Clifton is talking about visually.

It's a neo-liberal's wet dream!  Every POTUS since at least Carter can take credit for that one. All is going according to plan.

Hey, it's all about the the animal spirits, creative destruction, efficient allocation of capital, getting rid of fucking human liabilities and maximizing profit, yeah?

Brilliant success.

Hope your friend has . . . damn, what to wish a guy in that position anymore.  How about a backhoe to dig ditches in airstrips before the oligarchs' bug-out jets arrive in Paraguay and New Zealand?

Better drive the hell out of that ObolaCar while you still got some cash, because it will have an electronic lock-out device that will keep it from starting the moment (literally) you are late for a single weekly or monthly payment, whereupon you'll pay a "deliquency fee" to have "your" car service restored when you make up for the lost payment.  Allowing your full coverage auto insurance to lapse will also be a lock-out event.

Repo has never been easier.  And sure as hell never quicker.  Or, when you look at it, safer for the lender . . . long as they have good access to a used car or paper resale channel.  If you don't like those conditions, go ahead and buy a used car instead.  From that controlled used car channel that Obola's cash for clunckers bullshit demolished.

Good luck.

Likewise with the 1996 model flip-phone you'll get for your free 250 minute Obolaphone.  You'll look like a loser using it, though.  Even at the bus stop.

The food stamps will work well anywhere.  Well, anywhere with prices cheap enough to live on $190 a month in food.  Looking at prices on my kroger register receipts (just to double check the sticker shock I know so well during shopping), I see that you sure as hell won't be buying steak or lobster.  Actually, unless you buy the "manager's special" with only one day left til expiration (I hit that shit even with cash), you won't be eating beef at all.  Sorry, but if you're a beef lover, you're fucked.

The extended medicaid will definitely work, however.  Once you're lucky enough to find a doc who accepts it, at least.  And you better register quick: Feb 15 is the enrollment deadline.  For those states that signed on for it at all, of course.

Worst part from the perspective of "freebies", though, may be that you'll qualify for UIC.  In my state, pretty representative I would guess, that maxes out around $370 per week.  Not a lot, I'm afraid.  Especially if you're single and living alone, in which case you'll qualify for no freebies at all from the epically envied welfare state.  If you've got kids and a single income family living independently, you will qualify, fwiw.  Of course, then, you'll have an entire family to cover on said freebies.  Good luck maintaining the expenses taken on in your former social station.

Good luck all around, man.

You should blog your saga.  It could be educational for us and therapeutic (at the very least) for you.  Keep that shit going until your web service gets turned off.

Some in your position soberly assess their situation and cut spending to the bone while they pursue job prospects.  They make their credit card paments for a while . . . but being overly invested in maintaining a fiction that unveils itself to them fairly quickly if they have their eyes open, they then eye those cards as a funding source for some reasonably acceptable future in the future we now face.  They then max them out on fully productive necessities.  In full good faith.

Apply for them benefits the moment you leave the office for the last time.  All can be done online . . . where the program standards are always (you will have to dig for them) spelled out in simple formulas.

Act accordingly.

Good luck to all us commoners.

You must have great knowledge of your industry. With that in mind some thoughts for you.

Call any consulting company and or Temp agency that does business in your industry. Check out what they have open on line. Prepare your resume with What you can do and what you have done. Back it up by references that will attest to your work ethic and abilities. Get at EIN from the IRS and be prepared to work as an independent contractor.

Keep track and call all people you know in your industry for work leads, Get your references in order. Reconnect with any alumni organizations. Check out the posting in your state Employment Office or on line.

Form a working job finding group with some of your co workers. Invite more Sr Peole as well as Jr people. Make it a totem pole approach. Share Leads, always give great references for your co workers. Be approachable. You are ready to be hired, even if someone wants to phone you any time. Dont put anyone down who calls you. With your background you probably know much more than the screener that calls you. Educate them but never talk down to them. Lastly, make friends - no enemies. The world of staffing, temporary or permanent can either hurt you or help you.

All the best and let know when you land that next "gig."

Sickening to read your post as well as the posts in reply to you. Along with the lies in the unemployment statistics, the 2nd great lie is that American Corporations seek to hire over 50 years of age workers, especially white workers. They do not seek to hire such workers.

All these stories are written by reporters who love to quote academics, politicians, and other so called experts. No one bothers to call or quote actual Hiring Managers, Heads of Comapny Hiring Departments and CFO's who have a "to the number" needs for workers, planned in their "headcount budgets."  It is all feal good BS, designed to perpetuate the myth of employment improvement.

What economic statistic is not a lie in the land of the free?  Inflation? GDP? Unemployment? Earnings? Retail Sales?

Unfunded liabilities of at least $130 trillion are always ignored.  US debt and unfunded liabilities of $1,270,000 per US taxpayer are also ignored.  And they rise at $70,000 per taxpayer per year.  The chance that the US pays down its debts is considerably lower than Greece being able to do so.

True unemployment is 23% per Shadowstats:

Unfunded liabilities??? You are talking about the $23 trillion of private debt heaped on the public balance sheet, correct? I sure hope so. Although, it's not really unfunded. Not as long as we are still paying taxes and there are public assets to steal (eg. Social Security) and pensions to rob.

Now, I have given you the benefit of the doubt. I am assuming you haven't bought into the bullshit meme about unfunded liabilities as they relate to Social Security, Medicare, etc. As you are certainly aware, those systems can never be "unfunded" as they have a dedicated payroll tax associated to them. The clowns peddling this horse shit have so much contempt for the rubes that they fully expect to never be called on the illogical reasoning of their charge. Underfunded, unfunded what's the difference? As long as it has the prefix un-, the rubes can be had.

Even the underfunded charge is shit. I mean seriously! If I don't put money in a shoebox right this very minute for a beer that I'm going to buy forty years from now, every single penny's worth, I have an unfunded or underfunded liability???

I think they mean, unfunded as in, they stole from the lockbox and put in IOUs...in that sense they are unfunded lol.

I get your drift, but they are unfunded in the sense they have yet to pay out, until one retires! It is still a huge committment, and will eventually become insolvent.

Any male or female that was in the military knows how to shoot. Trust me when I say this, the USA has the biggest largest bad ass Militia there ever was.

Reminds me of a story from my undergrad days. An investor was in China visiting a massive construction site. Manual laborers digging away with shovels as far as the eye could see.

"Why don't you use excavators? The project would be completed much sooner," asked the investor.

"This way raises employment," explained his host.

"If it's employment you want, take away their shovels and give them spoons."

Joke's on us now.

About time this gets addressed.

Spain has 25% unemployment and 50% youth unemployment in certain areas. Employment is probably still overreported.

Pockets of these United States have the same structural problems and the same low labor participation rate.

The methodology by which they "count" employment is plain and simple a farce.

The trade deficit in goods and services for 2014 was around $480 bn.  Balancing the trade deficit with tariffs like the US did for the first 100+ years of its exisitence would create at least 10 million jobs.

The US has a lot of dead weight loss from nonproductive defense and healthcare expenditures.  Savings here would lead to even more productive jobs.  Probably $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion in savings located in wasteful areas for these sectors.

Oh yeah, the banking sector is parasitic.  Eliminating interest costs via the issuance of zero interest US Treasury notes at the federal level would free up $200 to $400 bn annually for more productive purposes--infrastructure anyone?

Instead of reasonably efficient and equitable government we have a form of fascism that is all bread and circuses.

We are number one in spectacles and regulatory theater to distract from these obvious fixes.

Wow.  The official number doesn't include those people?  That's terrible!  The government should construct a broader measurement of unemployment.  They did?  It's called the U6?  Well what does it show?  The same thing as U2 official rate, steady improvement and nearly back to pre-recession levels?  Well what are you blabbering about?  Almost like you are making noise where none is necessary.  Now admittedly there is a disconnect between the U6 and the total employment number, but why you harp on the gaps between U2 and U6 when they are publicly known (and in this case don't make a difference) is beyond me.  Why don't you analyze why total employment shows a gap vs U6?

Fuck this statistic!

Explain something to me here...when someone finishes with their unemployment insurance, and still can't find a job, how do they determine whether he is 'still seeking work', or has dropped out altogether? Do they ASK?

I've been on unemployment, and finished, and have NEVER been followed-up with, by anyone. Nor have ANY of the many, many others I know personally who are just like me...So how do they know?

They DON'T!!! They MAKE IT UP! Right now they are calling people like me "workers who have left the job market", because for whatever reason, it suits their purposes. Soon they will re-interpret their 'data', and we will be called "workers who are earning in the black market", and they will "calculate" our contribution to GDP when they need that number to rise significantly.

We, the unmeasured, serve as a sort of 'wild card' that TPTB can use whether they need an extra ace or deuce...

America’s most celebrated Capitalist, Bill Gates, turns out to be America’s No. 1 Communist. The evidence discredits the man.   Just as Gate’s Socialist protégé now in charge of ObamaCare, Sylvia Mathews Burwell,  told the GOP last week to “Get over Obamacare,” Gates the Displacer tells America'a displaced engineers and scientists to just get over the fruits of capitalism and calls for “Global Government,” his way.

Bill Gates Calls for ‘Global Government’: -- Billionaire Bill Gates called for “a kind of global government” this week, arguing that the creation of such a system would be needed to combat major issues such as “climate change.”

by Mikael Thalen

January 28, 2015--Speaking with Germany’s “Süddeutsche Zeitung” newspaper Tuesday, Gates decried the fact that a proper United Nations system has failed to materialize as planned.

“You can make fun of it, but in truth it was sad how the conference in Copenhagen is run, how individual who behave like the UN system failed,” Gates said according to an English translation in the Huffington Post.

Gates went on to stress his position further, stating that a global government was “badly needed” in order to combat an array of issues ailing the planet.

“Take the UN, it has been created especially for the security in the world. We are ready for war, because we have taken every precaution. We have NATO, we have divisions, jeeps, trained people,” Gates said. “But what is with epidemics? How many doctors do we have as much planes, tents, what scientists? If there were such a thing as a world government, we would be better prepared.”

The billionaire made headlines last week after introducing a plan to implement a cashless system in multiple third-world countries, a program that would undoubtedly give financial elites total control over monetary systems.

Despite the media’s constant glowing portrayal of Gates, which is rooted in his funding of major news outlets, a look at many of the so-called philanthropist’s pet projects reveals his true nature.

Aside from his founding of computing giant Microsoft, a corporation which has worked hand in hand with the NSA to eviscerate privacy, Gates’ role in the destruction of health worldwide is made obvious by the companies he invests in.

A breakdown of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2012 tax return by Mother Jones reveals billions in funding to corporations such as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Other groups receiving major cash include private prison company the GEO Group Inc., military contractor Dyncorp, a major player in human trafficking, and nearly every top oil company.

A major focus of the Gates Foundation has also been invested in vaccination campaigns, although Western media has completely ignored major ethical issues brought up by medical experts in countries such as India, where more than 47,500 children were paralyzed shortly after one of Gates’ campaigns.

Just last year, India’s Supreme Court began investigating Gates involvement in a vaccine trial that resulted in the deaths of several young girls.

Everything from gun control, Common Core and geoengineering, the practice of spraying toxic particles into the stratosphere to block the sun’s rays, has received millions in funding from Gates.

Gates has also taken heat for investing millions into biotech giant Monsanto, a corporation currently flooding foreign countries with genetically engineered crops.

In reality, the call for global government by Gates and other wealthy elitists has nothing to do with lifting up impoverished nations. Such a government would instead guarantee global surveillance, global wealth inequality and a world run by the exact corrupt interests currently consolidating wealth and power worldwide.

This is just a small example of the 'survival mode' that several sectors are in right now.  Nearly everyone is out to protect what they have and many will screw over someone else to achieve that.  It's gona be a fkd up time for a lot of people that own homes.  They're sitting on wealth just waiting for a fuck up.

Why would the government lie about Employment? Who are they protecting?

I think the answer may revolve around the meaning of the below quote....

Here's a quote from AutomaticEarth a few days ago... Is It Socialism or Just Failure?

"There’s an ideological battle happening between money and wellbeing, between people and banks.   Western leaders have so far chosen to protect money and banks, instead of people and their wellbeing, and that’s why we find ourselves where we do. Choosing money before people can only end in the demise of the system that makes such a choice. That, however, is apparently terribly hard to comprehend."

Kudos to Mr. Clifton for his honesty.  I have been horribly underemployed for almost 7 years, ever since the initial great credit collapse.  My so called career marketing wholesale energy, a six figure job from the outset, evaporated in 2007.  Ditto for 80% of my coworkers.  Most of us came from utilities and pipelines, but many of us found ourselves locked out from returning to our prior roles due to age.  Thus, we have worked as we could in any parallel fields.  My underemployment since 2007 has cost me (opportunity cost and hard dollar cost) about $500k.  I've worked for as little as $40k/yr with more than 30 years experience in multiple fields.  I am degreed and highly qualified, but I am the wrong age (too old), the wrong sex (male), and the wrong color (too white).  If I had not paid off all debt, and if my wife were not as successful in her career my circumstances would have been dire.  As it stands, I remain unconvinced our country is still merit based.  More like crony capitalism and national socialism to get a true picture of current reality.

My children, amazingly, see the world very clearly.  They are not distracted by the BS of MSM.  My daughter has a masters in marine biology but cannot get a job as a veterinary tech for minimum wage.  She gets it.  My son holds advanced degrees in nuclear sciences, but is developing multiple career path options in case federal funding collapses.  Much of his current job is federal funding based.  He envisions options prior generations would have never considered.  Leaving the US might someday be preferable.

Until the labor participation rate dramatically increases, everyone is painfully aware of the lies vs the truth.  The middle class is dying.

Mr. Clifton is part and parcel of the complicit-media. For him truth lies in his bank account, and lifestyle.

He's actually promoting a statist scheme, as outlined in his upcoming book. He wants to federalize the local governments further with a scheme of providing the banksters "printed" fiat, theft, to them in the name of " Promoting entrepreneurship and job creation..."

Thanks, and good luck with the job search.
