Eurogroup Gives Greece 10 Day Ultimatum: Apply For Bailout Or Grexit
Update: And now this: "Moody's places Greece's Caa1 government bond rating on review for downgrade"
The key driver for the review for downgrade is the high level of uncertainty over the outcome of the negotiations between Greece and its official creditors over the terms of Greece's support programmer. The outcome could potentially have negative implications for Greece's ability to meet its funding and liquidity needs and for the probability of default on marketable securities. Moody's government bond rating applies to marketable securities only.
Moody's would consider downgrading Greece's Caa1 government bond ratings were it to conclude, as a result of the review, that (1) an agreement with official creditors is not likely to be reached in time to enable the government to repay its creditors who hold debt on commercial terms; and (2) that the likelihood of a significant deceleration or even reversal in the implementation of the adjustment programmer would further hinder Greece's growth prospects.
Surely Greece must be delighted to be part of the European "Union" at this point.

Europe has an unpleasant habit of dropping tape bombs at the most inopportune of times, like at 3pm or later a Friday. And while on Wednesday it was the ECB yanking repoable Greek collateral for local banks, today it was first S&P, which downgraded Greece 5 months after upgrading it, and moments ago it was none other than the Cyprus bail-in man himself, the Eurogroup's Dijsselbloem, aka Diesel "Blueprint" BOOM, who just have Greece a 10 day ultimatum to fall into place or risk a terminal bank run and capital controls (both hinted at earlier by the post-DOJ settlement political "rating agency')
- GREECE MUST APPLY FOR BAILOUT EXTENSION ON FEB 16 AT THE LATEST TO KEEP EURO ZONE FINANCIAL BACKING -EUROGROUP CHAIRMAN DIJSSELBLOEM
This means that Greece now has 10 days, or until the Monday after next to decide whether it will stay in the Eurozone or Grexit. More from Reuters:
[Yanis Varoufakis] made clear that the new government, which came to power on a wave of anti-austerity anger in elections last month, now wanted to forego remaining bailout money that had austerity strings attached:
"Greece is not asking for the remaining tranches of the current bailout programme - except the 1.9 billion euros that the ECB and the EU member states' central banks must return."
Euro zone finance ministers will discuss how to proceed with financial support for Athens at a special session next Wednesday ahead of the first summit of EU leaders with the new Greek prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, the following day.
However, the chairman of the finance ministers said the following meeting of the Eurogroup on Feb. 16 would be Greece's last chance to apply for a bailout extension because some euro zone countries would need to consult their parliaments.
"Time will become very short if they (Greece) don't ask for an extension (by then)," said Jeroen Dijsselbloem.
The current bailout for Greece expires on Feb 28. Without it the country will not get financing or debt relief from its lenders and has little hope of financing itself in the markets.

Participants said no progress was made at a preparatory meeting of senior finance officials in Brussels on Thursday because Greece and its euro zone partners were so far apart.
"It was Greece against all others, basically one versus 18," one official said.
Almost sounds like a reverse veto out of the European "Union".
At the end of the day what D-Boom has effectively said is this:
GREECE MUST PUT THE LOTION ON IT'S SKIN OR ELSE IT GETS THE
HOSE AGAIN-EUROGROUP CHAIRMAN DIJSSELBOOM— Eddie Morra_ZH (@convert_trader) February 6, 2015
Which is precisely the thing Greece, whose negotiating position already has been crushed with the threat of a wholesale bank run, did not want to hear especially now that the government really has no choice: either it complies with European demands, and can sign its resignation right after having flopped epically, or it pushes on to find out just how badly Europe is bluffing.
Suddenly next week's emergency Eurogroup meeting on Wednesday is looking quite fascinating. We hope the caterers have bulletproof jackets.
And with that we give you... EUROPE!

This is what happened in Greece:
1) This is important, because the greeks like to forget it: Greece received billions every year from the EU. This was NOT debt, but part of an EU wide program to help poorer regions. Directly paid for by richer european nations.
2) On top of that the greek state took on 300 billion of debt, which grew more and more and in 2010 led to their bancruptcy. This debt was mostly loaned from banks, but already received numerous haircuts.
3) They spend their money on nonsensical stuff. For example they had more state employees than even Germany. How crazy is that?
4) The "austerity" is an attempt to get the spending in Greece under control. It came only after Greece was bancrupt.
A classic example of a country that took on the banks debt was Ireland, but Ireland is getting on track because it didn't have the systemic corruption and marxist attitude. That is unfortunately not what happened in Greece. Greece needs to learn the really hard way.
That's the theory we're told on and on and on - and it's wrong, the money dd NOT went into Greece and their economy, Greece is used like a transmitter in a grand white-.washing money scheme, where at least your point 3) is right - only it's not Greece that decided how the money is spend (to continue paying banks) but Troika and there willfully claqeurs. Check the facts.
...and Spain
....and Ireland
....and Portugal
....and Italy (well, at least the South)
oh, and what about those Socialist Frenchies? Who do you think supports/pays for their great centralized society?
Yup - Germany is their engine, through and through
might be a good time to go back a bit and re-read Martin Feldstein's 2012 article 'The Failure of the Euro'
as well as some of his earlier articles.
http://www.nber.org/feldstein/fa121311.html
"The euro should now be recognized as an experiment that failed. This failure, which has come after just over a dozen years since the euro was introduced, in 1999, was not an accident or the result of bureaucratic mismanagement but rather the inevitable consequence of imposing a single currency on a very heterogeneous group of countries. The adverse economic consequences of the euro include the sovereign debt crises in several European countries, the fragile condition of major European banks, high levels of unemployment across the eurozone, and the large trade deficits that now plague most eurozone countries
The political goal of creating a harmonious Europe has also failed. France and Germany have dictated painful austerity measures in Greece and Italy as a condition of their financial help, and Paris and Berlin have clashed over the role of the European Central Bank (ECB)and over how the burden of financial assistance will be shared.
........Single currencies require all the countries in the monetary union to have the same monetary policy and the same basic interest rate, with interest rates differing among borrowers only due to perceived differences in credit risk. A single currency also means a fixed exchange rate within the monetary union and the same exchange rate relative to all other currencies, even when individual countries in the monetary union would benefit from changes in relative values.
......when a county has its own monetary policy, it can respond to a decline in demand by lowering interest rates to stimulate economic activity. But the ECB must make monetary policy based on the overall condition of all the countries in the monetary union. This creates a situation in which interest rates are too high in those countries with rising unemployment and too low in those countries with rapidly rising wages. And because of the large size of the German economy relative to others in Europe, the ECB's monetary policy must give greater weight to conditions in Germany in its decisions than it gives to conditions in other countries"

did they discussed with my humble suggestion about renting few military bases for rus and china . no.. you guys like have 500 all around the world.. take like half them off and trust your allies..and stay in your own soil.. lots of savings... but no.. you still have trying to be as a world police.. understand that there is a new seriff in town...ruskina alliance
Meanwhile, in the red light districts of Germany, the real reason why the unpegging of the Swiss franc.
http://news.yahoo.com/strong-swiss-franc-boosts-trade-german-brothels-12...
And those same fuckers will drive back across the border and gripe about how cheap imported labor is driving down their Swiss wages.
...As opposed to their own export of excess liquidity reducing local demand.
So, that's that. Syriza submits to Brussels or stands aside in favour of a government who will---or gets pushed aside by the army of the Hellenic Republic (who are not about to accept payment in drachmae---austerity is for civilians) or by NATO. It's a fair bet preparations for a coup and normalization are already underway.
Messrs. Tsipras and Varoufakis, if you're out there---do your duty to Greece, but don't forget your duty to family. If there's anywhere else they can go, get them out while you still can. By the end of this month they may no longer be safe in Greece.
"Go forward knowing that, sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open again where free men will walk to build a better society."

what is it today.. belfietainment
Good. Escalation. It's about time the troikapeople stopped fucking around, gladhanding and wincing. This crop of young Greeks sure have not been.
Everyone is fucked, actually. I'll reckon that the Greek team has a very good fix on precisely the scale of the shockwave that could follow-on repudiation of troika. Troika has a lot more at stake.
Someone tell me how big of a shockwave will a € 300 bilion repudiation by Greece set off? Seriously, what are the dimensions... all-in... €"n" trillion.
Say, as opposed to a €150 billion shockwave.
What's it worth to get off of this bizarre fiscal moebius strip?
Save the snark. Serious people, please.
Seriously? It's only a few percentage points of the EU's GDP. Most of it is on the books of eurozone governments, which can absorb the blow at near-zero or even negative interest rates. Listen---Draghi's QE push was three times the entire Greek debt. Even if NATO nuked Athens life would go on.
Again---this isn't about the money---not Greece's anyway. This is about power, and preventing wholesale tax and debt revolts in the rest of Europe.
You keep forgetting about the trillions in derivatives associated with that debt, nevermind the domino effect a default might set off.
Greece will go out of euro, and it'll be the example for the others euroskeptics parties.
In old greek : deka hemera means 10 days. Decameron it became.
On that theme Boccacio wrote a great allegoric novel about how a band of young people decide to pass 10 days in orgy or in tragedy as they feel they are condemned by the plague that strikes their region.
Syriza now has 10 days to do the Same !
The plague being Draghi and Mutti with Lady Lagarde as the IMF scythe that cuts off the head of the condemned like mowing straw scarecrows. Shades of Raqa in Athens but for economic reasons.
Varoufakis playbook
The Troika seems enraged and powerless, not their usual behaviour...
The house of the babylon moneygod is crashing down.
Give thanks and, fix bayonets!
greece is a mess. write them off...they will wander off into oblivion like venezuela, pining away for toilet paper and bread. it will take them a couple years of inflation to realize that they are well and truly miserable...until then, they will be dancing in the streets at their bravado in throwing off the evil bankers of europe. let them dance for awhile....
what about the lenders? right now all those bonds are still on the books...once greece makes the default official (which nobody really wants), they have to be written off, and we have contagion. gonna see some massive ECB bailouts of the lender banks, and perhaps some failures.
.......................(edit) allright, read niall's entry above, good point about the scale of the default. acknowledged.
what about the other riff-raff (spain, portugal, italy...) for awhile, it will seem like greece got away with murder. somebody will want to emulate.
time to short the euro in a big way? keep stacking pm? sell off your southern europe real estate now while you can get something for it (before it is nationalized)?
what does this do to political stability? is this a humorous chapter in economic history or a lead-up to another euro-war?
not funny, folks.
why is this true for Greece and not for Iceland? What are the differences here beyond the factor of 8 difference in population?
This site's data may help answer. Greece is so effed compared to Iceland
http://countryeconomy.com/countries/compare/iceland/greece
The population probably is a big factor in that Iceland has a population less than Omaha and Greece close to El A, Cali.
#PrintDrachmas
You shall not suffer a witch to live.
It really does seem that the Eurocrats are losing control.
I hope Greece is the tiny cog in the machine that brings this entire rotten system to its knees. We need a systemic revolt to re-shape the landscape.
This Greek farce gets better on daily basis. The monetary union treaty does not enclose an exit article and previously it has been alleged of an exit being illegal. Now the same chaps are threatening of throwing out Greece, but on what legal grounds. Should Greece not to abide with the ultimatum, neither to leave voluntarily would be world class entertainment. Europe has nine more national elections pending this year, which will go down to the history for many particular reasons.
Do what Iceland did. Nuff said.
Yes! Iceland doing very well. A lof of nations can learn from Iceland. Including the great USA.
do your research.
Iceland is where it is due to loans from the IMF.
D-day must not have been good enough.
"...a wave of anti-austerity anger in elections last month..." That is, the current Greek government was elected on a wave of "We want more crap that we don't have to pay for."
Why of course they do. They're socialists.
The crony capitalist banksters are culpable, not because they are demanding repayment, but for making loans to these deadbeats in the first place.
Perhaps Merkel and The Greek Dude can re enact this:

fuck greece...the worse bunch of shameless beggars and conmen of our age...they talk about pride honor? lol...lying fuckers lied to get into EU, lied to take out those massive loans until they couldnt repay...they get a bailout with haircut and now back for more...fuck em...EU and EURO will rally if EU does what it should have done in the beginning, kick the fuckers out and let them starve.
see above comments
...and read your fucking history, you ignorant racist knuckle dragger. The Greeks were *lied to* to convince them to join the EU so they can become debt slavers. All according to plan.
I believe the US of A entered debt slavery in 1913.

Who cares? How Greece ever got into the EU is beyond me.
I bet there aren't even 500 Euopeans left living in Greece. Oh, the entire nation was once Caucasian, white, blue eyes and yellow hair, typical European; but no longer.
I bet if they DNA tested ten randon Greeks they'd discover an average of at least 60% sub-Saharan African lineage. It wasn't like this during the time of the ancient Greeks, but really all you have to do is look at 'em and the African blood is easy to see. In another two or three generations Greece will be 100% Arabic and African.
So fucking what? Like being Caucasian white and all that means anything? WTF are you talking about, you racist git? And by the way, numbnut - there is probably a lot of central asian and armenians in them greeks dna too - so get your racsit shit right at least.
Fucker.
Southern Europe of course is an amalgamation of various tribes and races invading and re-invading, over and over again.
And those tribes and races are all human.
some one should test your DNA. LMAO
Back in the 70s a Greek friend of mine thought Greece was the place to retire to because they did not pay taxes. A sense of ethnic superiority was always in his tone.

Tsipras' idea of reform is to rehire all the fired gov workers (in a country that still has more gov workers than Germany) to give all gov workers a 13 month's free salary (in a country supposedly bankrupt), to roll back all reforms to date (which they have barely implemented and continue to do kicking and screaming at every step).
Austerity? What austerity? Greece spending in 2014 was 90B, same level as in 2006 with little inflation interim. Getting rid of the huge budget deficits is not austerity.
Greece lied to get into EU, Greece lied to get those loans, Greece lied until they could not lie anymore and had to go seek a bailout. Greece got a huge haircut already...but like a deadbeat, instead of thanking their partners and benefactors they blame them and now want more free money that someone had to work for...enough is enough.
Ireland got a bailout, they hunkered down and quietly working it off. Greece is shameless. EU needs to get rid of this cankerous pustule. Both the EU and euro will be stronger without these shameless beggars.
An alcoholic will steal your wallet then break down in tears and tell you how sorry he is.
A drug addict will steal your wallet then spend hours helping you look for it.
Greece can only support it's unproductive citizens with borrowed money. It must have it.
The ECB knows if Greece defaults it will cause the rapid and disorganized unraveling of 100's of billions of bogus derivatives trades and usher in financial chaos.
There is a deadly game of blink in progress.
both the EU and the € are on life support. GR getting out now is a good idea.
"...they blame them and now want more free money that someone had to work for..."
Only takes one person to press some buttons and create money outta thin air.
goldman sachs crony was put in charge of Greece by the troika goblins to lie them into the collevtive so that they could complete the set.
the whole point was to totally indebt greece and make them dependant..and remove domestic political control... but the unelected beaurocrats didnt bargain on there oneday being real politicians that would put their country first.
ECB EU and co will now reap the consequences of their dirty work in greece over the past decade.
the euro is poison to ciuntries like greece spain portugal...it ensures they can never grow and will always be debt servants... the euro ensures their exports are 40% more expensive than if they were on their own currencies which would have been devalued.
this why we are having global currency wars...countries want to cheapen the exports.. out compete rivals..
Yes, and all to make sure they had some captive banks to funnel bailout money through...that's why they want these weak countries in their stupid union. They'd never get away with direct bank bailouts in their own countries, so far better to launder it through, say, Greek banks as "loans" to Greece. When in fact the money doesn't stay in Greece, but goes right back to those insolvent banks. All to keep the illusion going that the loans are performing, and all is well.
They get to present it to their voters as foreign loans instead of domestic welfare for their big banks.
Looks like the march to war setup by the nazis in the US government will render the Greece situation a sideshow judging by the news frm the merkel hollande Putin meeting so far.
BS.
you would send H & M to negotiate with Putin.? how naive.

GIFT FROM GOD
When you see Washington's stooges [Merkel/Hollande] in a rush to meet Mr. Putin it's because things are worst than we can even envisage.
*This could be the prelude to WWIII.
Yes - Merkel and Hollande paying to meet P on his own turf: They are going to ask for continued gas delivery, in exchange for their sub-rosa resistance to further financial repression of Russia by O'Zero and his deluded financial conspirators.
And they need to say it to Putin in person, so as to avoid being overheard and taped, Victorious Nuland FU EU style...
it could be the prelude to a lot of things.
if it's to www3, the ussa is on the list. no free lunch this time.
maybe c. eastwood could make another perverted movie out of it.
I also wondered if their visit to Putin was a final warning to stop invading East Ukraine. We know he has done at least 15 times because Poroshenko and his boy have told us so and they never lie.
Mutti: Dear Vlad, Vashington sayz you musht schtop invading Ukraine.
Putin: Dear Mutti, how can I stop doing something that I'm not doing?
Mutti: Zis is not ze point. Vashington demand zat you schtop it.
Putin: OK. I pull out my tanks and columns that don't exist and you will be happy?
Mutti: Jahre, for sure. Zat monkey in Vashington von't know ze differenze.

Default. And ask Putin for the same terms Vlad offered Yanukhovich in Ukraine
Asylum?
Greece won't do fuck all, cept take the offer they are given. These new guys are just politicians, spineless creatures of low character, just like the last bunch that was given the heave-ho. If I'm wrong about this, drinks are on me and I'll fly the Greek flag outside my house for no less than 2 weeks before I take it down and put my Gadsden back up. I don't think I'll be needing to buy a Greek flag anytime soon.
Syriza's campaign song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-crgQGdpZR0
This is like that email scam about the Nigerian prince who wants to give you 20 million for helping him him wire some funds. Here its the ECB that wants Greece to be the middleman and channel ECB funds back to the banks. In the process Greece gets to keep a little for themselves. The Greeks don't seem to want to play that game anymore though. The Euros act like they have the upper hand, but it gets to a point when they really don't. Greece has lost it's apetite for more debt.
excellent summation of the issue.
the dilemma for Greece is that the entire global monetary system is predicated upon the issuance of debt to create "wealth".
they could print their own currency of course, but that would require enough people willing to accept it as value.
maybe they should do a kickstarter campaign?
If they have any sense, they will Grexit and not look back.
Website of all Brian Williams' lies developing......did you know he once saved a puppy as a fireman? Wait, no , it was two pupplies....Great fun. Can't believe ZH is ignoring this story.

the money, loans, bail-outs, and qe.'s are just loss-leaders presented by the BIS, (fed., ecb., boj., and boe.), to get you hooked, as are free drug samples from the dealers.
Greece is no different than the us., we've elected politicians through the years, (BIS whores), with no morals, and the same lust for money, and power as the BIS., and they've sold the citizens of the world out.
Greece is up the proverbial creek with-out a paddle.
the BIS must of had a 100 grubers drawing up the eu. agreements.
one part of me wants to see the first card come out of this house-of-cards while I'm still alive, and have the exit.
the other part of me says stick it out, it's not going to last much longer, now that the BIS has shown their hand, with them threatening to bankrupt a sovergien nation, and all of it's people, for not getting in line.
when the eu. fails, and the us. has to teardown that wall, things will move rapidly, and the eu. countries better be in some position to keep up.
I don't read, or watch hardly any foreign msm's, but what do Germans think about all this?
it seems to me Germany is the condom the BIS uses when screwing with Russia, others, and when they screw Germans into picking-up eu.'s debt.
the games will proceed, until people don't accept worthless currency.
The German MSM are all about beating lazy tax-dodging Greeks into a pulp for allegedly fiddling thrifty Germans out of their savings.
They've learned the hard way not to mess with the Russians, mind you, so they're a bit more sensible on Ukraine.
Greeks are famous for fisting
The Greeks need to tell the EU to go screw themselves. Redistribute the Drachma, take in all Euros. Free themselves from the Germans and then see where the chips fall. If nothing else they KNOW that Russia has their backs and when the Russians come calling don't think the good ole USA wont step up and make a counter offer. Trust me, the only losers in this whole shooting match are the folks still in the EU. Hopefully the others will take note and follow suit and this nightmare that we call the Euro will be at an end.
The EU strategy is the same as the payday loan company.
Don't recognize bad debt and just keep lending them more money.
In the short term the balance sheets look good.
In the long term the ponzi scheme collapses.
How the EU wants' to save Greece ? Offer them through the Troika more money at higher interests to make the debt balloon to 500 billions ......
How to become more indebted thanks to Goldman Sachs and the Troika . From 45 billions to 343 to 500 ? The morons from the Troika are really brilliant ( sarcasm ) at solving money problems ! Add to this the incompetent from S&P ....... I should consider opening a rating agencies I could do much better ......judging by their results ...... anybody could do it !
it may be that GR just gave the EU ten days to get their s*it together.
not going too well for the EU bufoons.
mutti merkel and msr. hollandaise left RU hand in hand with putin's blessing and little else. lmao
Yes, this little ultimatum of the ECB's just might have the effect of not only forcing the Greece out of the Eurozone, but also NATO. Nice work Darghi you f***tard.

This is exactly what Syriza wants as well. They want more Europe, not less. So far it has been a big no no to Merkel and Germany. Is this the tool used to "persuade" Merkel?

I believe there are countries around the Euro zone that use Euro's as their base currency without being in the union. This seems to be the kicker to me. Greece could default and it's currency is protected by the rest of the union.
this is what will happen.
the concept of eurozone was great on paper but now you have a serious problem, bank got all money, countries are empty money, so now the idea of paying for others when you have your own pbs in your own country, this can be ok for a while, but it is mathematicly inevitable that at some point the divorce is announced.
other hand, they're locked, they cannot kick anyone out of euro zone, it would make it explode with social movements all around the europ.
they yell but they do not bite, they need each others , every one they are, this is all mascarade
Goodbye sinking ship of Europe. Hello life preserver from Putin.
It's simply a matter of choosing the least bad choice.
For those who think Biden is talking inflammable, here's a sample from a speech made recently in the Russian parliament...
'...Paris should be burned completely to the ground! Since Angela Merkel is NATO’s 'chief instrument', its' her fault actions and sanctions were taken against Russia. Angela Merkel is our enemy.
Germany, in particular the city of Berlin, should be totally bombed out through the air by the Russians.
The nation of Germany should be obliterated....until no towns or cities are remaining.
Germany should be bombed until no there are no more Germans alive...'
