Boston Smashes Monthly Snowfall Record: This Is What It Looks Like Right Now

Tyler Durden's picture

For some it may have been the hottest year on record (if only with the use of seasonally-adjusted, well, seasons). For Bostonians, the past 30 day stretch has just smashed all-time monthly snowfall records.

Just another 15 inches of snow, and this will be the all-time highest snowfall season in Boston history:

Add the furious windchill and resulting coastal flooding, and Boston is desperate for some of that infamous global warming

Below are various other photos of what Boston is dealing with this morning after the latest snowfall, which the locals are calling the Blizzard of 2015: Round 2:

What is causing all this atmospheric havoc is the latest Winter Storm to slam the Northeast: Neptune, which as the Weather Channel summarizes, "delivers a triple threat of snow, high winds and bitter wind chills to areas still struggling to recover from a series of major snowstorms virtually unprecedented in modern times."

Here are the key things you need to know about Winter Storm Neptune right now:

  • Low pressure is offshore of coastal New England and is pulling northward toward Nova Scotia.
  • Widespread wind damage occurred Saturday evening due to high winds along and behind the arctic front accompanying Winter Storm Neptune; structural damage has been reported in the Carolinas, and more than 200,000 customers lost power Saturday evening.
  • Neptune has already brought up to 8 inches of snow to parts of Michigan. Lake-effect snow is lingering over parts of Upper Michigan and northwest Indiana, with winter storm warnings and advisories in effect.
  • In the Northeast, blizzard warnings continue for parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine. These warnings include the Boston metropolitan area.
  • Parts of Massachusetts have already seen up to 22 inches of new snow.
  • High wind warnings continue from southern Connecticut to western North Carolina, including New York and Washington, D.C. Sunday.

Winter Storm Neptune's impact will be magnified by a large field of strong winds, even in areas outside the heaviest snow, and a sharp drop in temperatures that will lead to dangerously low wind chills in the wake of the storm.

This comes on the heels of an almost three-week snow siege that has smashed records in parts of New England, including Boston and Worcester. Much of that snow is still on the ground due to a prolonged cold snap, and that snow will compound the misery from this storm as Neptune's winds blow not only the new snow, but snow already on the ground.

The forecast timing and potential impacts are below the radar image. Check back with us at weather.com and The Weather Channel frequently as we update this forecast.

What is most odd is that for many in the Northeast and around the Great Lakes - one of America's primary economic hubs - the winter of 2015 has been far, far worse than the sporadic "Polar Vortex" of 2014. And yet, not a peep about how the "inclement" weather is about to result in an annualized $80 billion of lost economic output, which is what the weathermen, pardon, economists want the world to believe is what caused the economic swoon of Q1, 2015. That's ok, though: we have the West Coast port strike to blame for that in a few short weeks.

It's not "every snow storm." If you can read, it's record monthly snowfall.

I don't mind snow blowing the driveways but the dogs need to go somewhere and it is a bitch making paths around my hilly yard.  At my elderly parents' house they insist on paths to their bird feeders in addition to paths for their dog.  Took about 4 hours this morning but I got it done before the wind picked up and the temperatures started falling.  Broke the shifter on the snow blower and a shear pin.  Ordered new belts to go with these other parts.

Science requires that "skeptics" are correct until a proof is constructed and validated.

The collected data is not the problem; it is the "adjustment", "gap-filling", and "blending" of modeled and observed data that bugs me the most. Some of the work is so sloppy in the formation of the hypothesis that observed cooling is used to validate warming.

I have heard that line of reasoning many times about different situations. Typically goes like "killing yourself would help solve X Y or Z problem, so kill yourself". Goes for global warming, overpopulation, using too many resources, etc. Usual stuff.

The problem with that is that helping to solve a problem is not enough. One desires to solve a problem, not just help to solve it. No one will kill themselves to solve overpopulation.

Think about it as an optimzation problem... Your own life worsens a problem, but your life gives you a chance to fix it. If your contribution is potentially greater than the problems caused by yourself, then there is no incentive to commmit suicide.

Practical example: Overpopulation... What would it be more effective, to kill yourself or to become a camp guard? I mean, you kill two measly people, just two persons, and you contributed twice as much to solving the "human problem" as bare suicide would have done. Imagine a thousand!

See my point? Its all about balancing pros and cons.

I'll take gold, guns, and being a selfish prick any day over fiat, disarmament and collectivism.

If you're disgusted, then simply fuck off.

P.S.: I believe it was Locke who demonstrated that all willful human action is inherently selfish. If you help your neighbor, then you value that over not helping your neighbor, thereby alleviating some personal unease. But never mind that, I'm sure you fancy yourself as an arbiter of what constitutes selfish and selfless behavior.

Sun, 02/15/2015 - 18:07 | 5787975 rum_runner

Nice that you paint me as some "arbiter of what consitute selfish."  Laughing at collapsing buildings, economic hardship (for the thousands of hourly folks unable to get to their jobs), etc, isn't some selfish gene in action or even nihilism -- it's pure malice and it is celebrated here by the likes of yourself.

You guys decry what has happened to America, the artifice of fiat, the trashiness of pop culture but you don't think twice to spit on Americans you have never met just because of some bullshit grudge or another.

We used to help each other out because we were all we had.  Now the self-described selfish pricks run the show -- from the oligarchs manipulating the system to their own ends to the individuals so full of bitterness and hate that they delight in anyone's misfortune.

I sure as hell wouldn't want you as a neighbor.

I admit that I wished hemerrhoids on reptilians, who I'd gladly spit on.

I lived in the rural northeast for nearly 30 years. All I know is that if you're not prepared for the winter there, then it's your problem. If you are properly prepared, then you take it in stride. My comments on this article have more to do with the disproportionate coverage northeast snow storms receive in the media. There is much worse hardship elsewhere in the world than that experienced when you can't download your new i-shit app because the CATV cable was downed by an ice-laden maple tree. It's winter; get over it, or move south.

Regardless of your opinion of ZH, it's no place for the sanctimonious.

Sun, 02/15/2015 - 19:05 | 5788159 rum_runner
rum_runner's picture

Sure, there's a valid point to being prepared.  But there's also the fact that this is an unprecedented series of storms and people who rely on public transport to get to their jobs are out their wages, nevermind business owners barely getting by losing what is now weeks of revenue.  Did you laugh at New Orleans for being unprepared for Katrina because, hey, it's the south, hurricanes happen, be prepared?

I hate the system as much as the next guy but the gleeful cynicism on display here is indistinguishable from simple evil.   Everyday folks not just turning their backs on each other but celebrating any hardship of their countrymen is an appetite for cruelty I can not fathom.

I know, I know.. "It's ZH; get over it or leave."

Do you remember what happened a mere three weeks ago with the storm of the millenium? Right! Downgraded to junk!

Every storm and every winter must be hyped as "unprecedented" in order to attract interest, and you're buying this crap and magnifying its gravity in the greater scheme of things. There's nothing new here, bro.

Listen, B.S., yes, it is my personal (and professional) believe that the globe as a whole is warming. And it has absolutely nothing to do with Al Gore who is just a bloody politician trying to make a living off other people (like most politicians), in his case using heave taxation on this phenomenon. The case for a global warming though is much stronger than for a cooling IMHO. I'm aware this is not a very popular thing to say here for many ZHers, so be it, and it sure as hell ain't got shyte to do with saving the planet. I'm not worried about the planet the least. Humans, much more so. So hold your breath and stay cool! Over and out. Cheers.

Hey, It's still better than...Detriot; San Francisco; Austin or NYC.  Boston isn't so bad and bet you never ate at the North End. Lot's of nice places on the waterfront too and some good development over the last 5 years. Some of it may be a bit pricey but this place has been upwardly mobile. Definately world class and you should take the boat in at night and walk around, It's fucking beautiful, safe and classy. Let you in on a secret, check out the South Shore sometime. I'm from Maine and love both places. (never thought I'd say that).

Insurance companies need bailout for structural damage caused by storms in Massachusetts. I shit you not.

Looks like a big plus for building materials. Short renewable energy.

God damn that Florida flat or weak sloped roof (engineering) for commercial buildings. What the fuck were they thinking.

==========

I can tell you that a lot of damage has already occurred. They bailed out the banks/useless cars companies/cronies in the renewables business and themselves. They still find money to poke their noses in someone elses business AND wage fucking war where we have no place being in. Look at our crumbling infrastructure. Look at useless crony engineering and on and on... These asshats can't even get the simplest thing right.

I hope they enjoy their stay at the counrty club. They surely deserve it /S.

Global warming predicts this.  It predicts lots of snow and cold winters.  Of course it also predicts no snow and warm winters so it really can't lose.
