US Sends "Tankbuster" Jets To Europe Over Russia Fears After Germany Says "A Large Scale War Could Develop"

Tyler Durden's picture

Karl-Georg Wellmann, a lawmaker in Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union has warned that, despite its efforts to avoid arms being provided to Ukraine, Germany "will no longer be able to stop weapons deliveries from from the U.S. and Canada." Almost too coincidental to these comments, CNN reports, the U.S. Air Force is sending its A-10 "tankbusters" back to Europe in order to "increase rotational presence in Europe to reassure our allies and partner nations that our commitment to European security is a priority." As Wellmann ominously concludes, seemingly confirming Putin's warning yesterday that if Kiev aims at a military solution, war will never end, "a large-scale war could develop out of that."

As Bloomberg reports, Germany May Be Unable to Stop Weapons to Ukraine, Lawmaker Says

Karl-Georg Wellmann, a lawmaker in Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and chairman of the German-Ukrainian parliamentary group, tells newspaper Tagesspiegel that Germany won’t be able to halt U.S. weapons deliveries to Ukraine to fight Russian-supported separatists.

"We will no longer be able to stop weapons deliveries from from the U.S. and Canada" after rebel gains in the strategic town of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine, Wellmann tells Tagesspiegel in interview

"A large-scale war could develop out of that," Wellmann says

Wellmann says further economic sanctions against Russia are "unavoidable," Tagesspiegel says

And so, as CNN reports, The US is sending in the Warthogs...

The U.S. Air Force is sending its "tankbusters" back to Europe.

The service's European Command said this week that 12 A-10 Thunderbolts would be deployed to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which was formed after Russia's intervention in Ukraine over the past year.

"The Air Force is increasing rotational presence in Europe to reassure our allies and partner nations that our commitment to European security is a priority," Lt. Gen. Tom Jones, vice commander, United States Air Forces in Europe -- Air Forces Africa, said in a statement.

The Air Force said besides operating in Germany, the A-10s will be forward deployed to other partner nations in Eastern Europe. U.S. forces have operated out of bases in Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland, among others, in the past year.

The A-10, also known as the "Warthog," was designed in the 1970s to support ground troops in Europe against the tanks and armored vehicles of the then-Soviet Union. Though the jets can carry a variety of bombs and missiles, they are best known for their nose-mounted, seven-barrel 30 mm Gatling gun that can fire almost 4,000 rounds per minute, enough to quickly blow apart a tank. The planes are also durable, with the pilot protected from ground fire by a wrapping of titanium often called "the bathtub." And they are designed for easy maintenance in battlefield areas, with interchangeable parts for the right and left sides of the aircraft.

*  *  *

Not exactly the act of a peace-seeking force following a "truce"? But then again... Washington was not included in the Minsk Summit so apparently feels free to stir things up explicitly.

A-10 can't operate in defended airspace and survive for long. The AH-64 probably can and the F-35 definitely can. The point of the F-35 is not to provide CAS, it is to kill the counter air and SAM threat and allow choppers to do CAS role, with the F-35 high cover watching for popup threats, kill them, and drop JDAMs, LGBs or SDBs when the choppers can't hit a target hard enough to end a situation. That the F-35 can do, it has 2.7 times the internal fuel load of an F-16C and almost 5,000 lbs more fuel than an F-15C. So it can loiter for awhile and kill stuff in the way an F-16C can not. The AH-64 has plenty of cannon against ground forces, and no one is going to be diving in close to kill modern MBT columns with cannons in defended airspace. That's a job for standoff weapons.

What is the matter? Did you think obamatron assclowns currently in charge were not bloody murdering tyrannical progressives? Still think progressives dance around with prancing unicorns that shit skittles singing kumbaya?

Progressives are death dude, time wake up and smell the coffee. Check this for example, they murder their own unborn babies just to warm up. You shoulda seen em in Texas, chanting and frothing at the mouth to be able to kill, kill kill little babies, lead by the queen death bitch Wendy Davis. She became a progressive "hero" for lead the charge for death..

Progressive medicine is death panels.

Progressive eco-murderers lied to bring back malaria, once almost wiped out so millions could die.

Big government progressives sit on top of the biggest throne of corpses ever in the history of the world in the last 100 years, hundred of millions dead, murdered by government. And who want MOAR government?

Yeah thats right, bloody murdering progressive do. Obama does. Obama is a stone cold murderer. Obama's mentor, Bill Ayers still wants 25 million Americans dead so he can create his progressive utopia. Ayers blew up four of his own friends building bombs and that guy was Obama's inspiration. Fuck me.

Hillary Clinton destroyed Libya and created ISIS, rivers of blood flow daily because of her.

I am surrounded by fucking morons and not a goddamn constitutional conservative in sight. Fuck.

It could also be some kind of a split between the anglos and continentals, would also fit into the Greek drama story line, but certainly, bankers clearly have a strong motive to stir up shit for diversion to escape the blames for that kind of a turmoily situation.

Amen to that brother, but unfortunately most don't see it that way. How many Germans were ever afforded the benefit of the doubt for Hitler's misadventures? And I'd temper your prayer with the caveat that Americans really should pay a little more attention to the chaos & misery their government is wreaking on the world. How many more wars does the Nobel Peace Prize winner have to conjur out of thin air before they say enough? And if Libya, Syria, etc. doesn't wake them out of their slumber, you might think that the idea of a war with Russia, in that neck of the woods, would. Boston is litterally jumping out of windows over a few feet of snow. Well I lived a bunch of years in Russia under Yeltsin, and let me tell you that their notion of winter is a little different. Napoleon & Hitler were given hard lessons by Mother Russia. It's too bad Joe Six Pack refuses to crack a book and learn a little history.

Maybe not. maybe drones are used as stalking horses to expose (light up) the radar sites which are then targeted by standoff airborne missile launchers. So now, no more radar. Rinse and repeat. again, no more radar. Third time, drones signalling like A-10s front run the real mccoys and only shoulder fired weapons are left. The A-10s have countermeasures for those... It is the perfect plane for a European Tank war. Shoot holes in the tails or whatever, keeps flying. Well not whatever, but it can fly with lots of holes in it.

I thought it would be sold or scrap, but there was another review meeting this year or within 6 months or so.

If you fly at tree top level, then the radar doesn't know where they are and you can't turn and fire at an A-10 in 1 or 2 seconds for a fancy aiming rig or a huge missile pod.

remember operation Norther Watch in Iraq... both the US & the Brits where flying in low and fast and taking out the Radar... at least that's the story I got.

I had an A-10 come over me 1-2 times. They are loud enough, but you can't see them. I guess with Manpads or older systems you have to get on a high place like under good protection on a hill or mountain in order to fire the manpads with success.

War has a way of focusing the mind back to reality, despite MSM nonsense. In Ukraine, we have a situation.

There are (at least) two sides which have no intention whatsoever of backing down. One side is backed by a formidable and experienced power. The other side is backed by a declining superpower with powerful allies. It is much stronger than the other power. However, the weaker power, Russia, is not in a position to back down. Weaker powers never are, since backing down means surrender, rather than retreat.

War, real war, not proxy war, seems very likely, don't you think?

This is dangerous escalation, these are aircraft exclusively for close combat support, what Kiev junta desperately needs and they can easily fly to eastern Ukraine from bases in Poland. As soon as first of them is shut down in Donbass we have open proxy war between US and Russia with US Air Force involved.

The warning about escalation of the events, we are at the edge of, as well as general background on Ukraine found at:

Two quotes from the article:

>Germany "will no longer be able to stop weapons deliveries from from the U.S. and Canada."

>The service's European Command said this week that 12 A-10 Thunderbolts would be deployed to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which was formed after Russia's intervention in Ukraine over the past year.

Such hypocritical bullshit. If Germany wants to stop weapons deliveries to Ukraine, a logical first step would be to close all of the U.S. military bases in Germany.

It has been debunked quite a bit.

It hasn't been debunked at all.  Because it was never acknowledged by the MSM.  Just like the missing Ukrainian ATC tapes.  You heard about it for a day and then the State Department hushed it up.  Same with the Donald Cook.  We heard about it on the MSM for a day and, bingo... into the memory hole..

Both the Pentagon and Russia agree that the the Sukhoi-24 made a dozen passes over the Cook in a period of 90 minutes.

And how did History's greatest military force respond when one of their modern war ships and its crew were so threatened?  What did the heirs of LeMay, MacArthur, Custer do?

They did nothing but sail away to Romania.

I'll check back to see if you provide some links of debunkery for basho.

If you don't I'll just assume you have resumed commenting under your regular moniker: VIEDOKLIS, PRINCE OF RIGA.

One again most of the commenters show they have no clue in reference to SAM batteries and Electronic Counter Measures. This battle of target acquisition and countermeasure has gone on for years. The A-10C has a few tricks up its sleeve that really help it out in and electronic combat environment. It flies an uprated AN/ALQ-184 pod for self-defense jamming. I will not go into particulars but suffice to say it is bad ass. It also carries an AN/ALR69A(V) radar warning receiver that ties in with ALQ-213 and flare/chaff dispenser’s.  This capability combined with the proven survivability thanks to extensive armor provides a very robust system to get to the target and bring the pilot home.

If we are flying in a heavy SAM environment any strike package will be escorted by a combination of standoff jammers   like the EA-6 prowler or EA-18 Growler and F-16CJ Wild Weasel aircraft. You Russian fan boys out there don’t want to be around any SAM battery when the word Magnum is spoken on the radio and the AGM-88E HARM is on the way. They will have to chain those fucks to their radar control seats.
