Stunning Images Of The "Siberian Express" FreezeNado

Tyler Durden's picture

More than 100 million Americans are set to be impacted by the arctic blast known as the "Siberian Express" as record (low) temperatures are being broken across the eastern third of the nation. NBC News reports, Chicago is experiencing its coldest February since 1875 with roads in an "ice skating rink-like condition." From ice geysers to snow-golf and frozen falls, we can only imagine the breath-taking impact this 'polar-vortex'-esque weather will have on US GDP...

The coldest outbreak of the season is pushing south into the eastern United States this week. Temperatures will be running as low as 30 to 40 degrees below normal across the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic on Friday morning. Thursday night’s departure from normal temperatures is shown above in Celsius.

Windchill warnings across a third of the nation...

And the forecast for tomorrow is even lower...

With daggers hanging from the eves...

Machines hard at work...

But people are going nowehere...

Chickens not happy...

Nor are cats...

Snow Golf anyone?

An Ice Geyser!!

And Niagara Falls has frozen!!

*  *  *

And while this makes life more difficult for many - as beautiful as it is in some cases - the last time this happened, US GDP crashed 5%..

It was about a year ago today, when economist consensus, ever true to its "momentum extrapolation" ways, predicted that in the first quarter of 2014 US GDP would grow by a solid 2.2% (down from 2.9% predicted several months previously). This happened even as the very economists forecasting the GDP number allegedly had problems getting to and from work, due to all the snow and cold weather. Yes, in the middle of winter: truly unheard of.

The rest was history: a few months later when the final calculation of annualized Q1 GDP was released on June 25, the BEA reported that it had crashed by a whopping 2.9%: a delta of more than 5%!

And since nobody had predicted such an epic collapse in the US economy, an excuse was promptly cobbled together: the weather, and specifically, the "polar vortex" of January and early February, that was raging at the time when those calculating the impact of the weather on GDP only saw it subtracting a few basis points of growth.

Pittsburgh sucks; real Pennsylvanians live near Philly and eat Philly's and do other things with their Philly's...Pitts just dig holes and use them to ...well you fill in the blanks.

Ahh, the famed "Republican 'T'" of Pennsylvania. That's what keeps us back in the Dark Ages more than we should be.

Pennsylvania really is Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with Alabama in between. You'll never see more Confederate flags in your life than when traversing through the areas wherein those "real Pennsylvanians" reside.

Snowfalls Are Now Just a Thing of the Past

"According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

Go long gas powered water pumps and electric sump pumps when this shit melts. I shit you not. Salt can be as bad as doing nothing in certain cases. Throw it on your roof where you have an ice dam and voila, you instantly have leaks and lots of water damage.

Roof rakes are the biggest problem if you do not clear your entire roof. Where you couldn't reach you have another ice dam. The warm/cold shot we have had freezes the snow you couldn't reach and all hell breaks loose when it warms up.

Long metal roofs.

Climage change theory does state that extremes of weather will become more common as time passes. We are now seeing rather cold winters in eastern US, and warm winters in cold parts of Europe. Not that I'm saying man made climate change is real, I don't know, but saying this cold disproves it is just plain wrong.

"Climate change theory" is a steaming pile of unfalsifiable hypotheses. Any piece of evidence, no matter what the actual data is, is claimed to support the theory.

All faith-based dogmas are fundamentally the same, including "global warming". It ain't even been around very long and they're already selling indulgences AKA "carbon credits", and run its own inquisition against heretics which continues to this day.

It's hard to say what the single most offensive thing is about the religion of global warming, but condemning all nonbelievers as "climate change deniers" is pretty far up there - and it is every bit as absolute about the difference between believers and nonbelievers as the most extreme forms of Islam.

The funny thing about being a member of a faith cult, as you are, is that the dogma itself makes it near impossible for its victims to realize that they are being victimized.

Peak Finance's picture

Actually this:

LOL, you compare 'man made climate change' with religious fanaticism

Is a farily accurate description of the Global Warming crowd, and I will explain why.

First, it was not "Climate change" it was "Global Warming" and this is what was pushed for almost 20 years, most famously in that Al Gore Film. When the proof for this "Global Warming" simply did not exist, the theory was changed to "Climate Change" and the same huxters continued to push this. Under the new "Climate Change" theory any extream in weather, be it too hot or too cold, is now "proof" of their climate change hypothesis.

Problem is that, if any extream in weather, be it hot or cold is proff of "Climate Change" it's an "un-falsifiable" hypothesis which puts it firmly OUTSIDE the realm of science and closer to    religious fanaticism

Save your diatribe for the weak minded.  I don't believe man has anything to do with the climate period, and Al Bore is looking to take more money from us via the carbon tax....what's your point with me? You think because I am religious I cannot see what is going on, nice try.

You can bash my religous faith all you want, if it makes you feel superior, fine. God bless ya finance.

To be fair, before it was "global warming", it was "global cooling" in the 1970s, pushed by the same big government interventionist hucksters.  When that didn't seem to be working out, it switched to "global warming" and when, as you say, that didn't seem to be working out, it switched to "climate change".  The latter has of course existed as long as the Earth but now it needs government bureaucrats, politicians and faux-scientists to manage it, all being well paid by taxpayers to do so, as well as having lots of trips to exotic places to help them understand our dire peril.

Check this alternate observation ? Two Hundred Year Solar Cycle Continues to Dominate Global Climate. The most recent multi-centennial climate epoch which began around 1830, has begun to reverse direction from a global temperature standpoint. The past period of generally increasing warmth for the Earth, which was caused by the Sun’s natural and regular cycles of activity, reached an average peak of warming between 2007 and 2008 as measured by global atmospheric temperatures in the lower troposphere. This change was observed in oceanic temperatures as early as 2003. Acting primarily under the influence of a repeating 206 year solar cycle, a new “solar hibernation” has begun, and is marked by a significant decline in the Sun’s energy output. Starting with solar cycle #24, this energy reduction has initiated an expected reversal from the past warm era to a new cold era.Link to complete report. http://drrichswier.com/2014/12/13/released-global-climate-status-report-...

Instead they could never settle on a high enough tax and more importantly who got to spend it.

...oh yes Solara...forgot...

15 miles south of Lake Michigan. High of 5 F. today. I'm in a tight, old wood frame barn. There's grain in my trough, second cut alfalfa in the hay feeder. The water barrel is heated, and clean straw in my bed. Life is good, even if The Vladimir sends his Weaponized Winter to me. My man is able to take all of the winter that the Russians can send him and do the chores on time ever day.

OMG!! Cold in winter and warm in summer!?  This is the end!

Ice cores don't lie and there are no SUVs in the archaeological evidence. It's just cycles of about 100-125k years and then back to snowball Earth.

I noticed all the ludicrous references to Al Gore.

The reason it is so cold back East and so warm back West (where I am) is because of the huge undulations of the jet stream. Why is that? It is because of the loss of ice and the raised temperature in the Arctic due to warm Gulf Stream water entering the Arctic ocean.

Sometimes I am impressed by the comments on ZH. And then these 'Al Gore' references remind me that ZH commenters can be as idiotic as normal Americans.

The Eastern US is experiencing record low temperatures at this time. The really sad fact is that ~99.9% of ZH commenters couldn't explain why to their children (if they asked).

You are an imbecile; Al Gore didn't invent the internet but he did invent the carbon-credit market and cap-and-tax policy initiatives, along with his buddies in Kyoto:

"Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, the Protocol places a heavier burden on developed nations under the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities." http://unfccc.int/kyoto_protocol/items/2830.php

China's National Weather Service Blames Inaccurate Forecasts on Decline of Russian Ruble Dino Lirios   | Feb 18, 2015 10:50 PM EST

(Photo : Reuters) Russian President Vladimir Putin attends his annual end-of-year news conference in Moscow, December 18, 2014.

In a strange turn of events, China's national weather service is now blaming the inaccuracy of their reports on the decline of Russia's economy, as well as the decrease in value of the ruble.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) said on its official microblogging Weibo account last week that their forecasts may be a bit inaccurate due to the fall of the Russian currency.

Like Us on Facebook

While most people see the connection as a bizarre one, the NMC explained that they depend on Russian meteorologists to provide data which they themselves use as a reference for their prognosis.

The weather on China's northern neighbour has a big impact on China. Hence, the connection.

Most Chinese citizens did not believe NMC's claims though, questioning whether the statement was a joke or whether they were just seeking excuses for their inaccurate forecasts.

The reactions on social media grew to a large enough proportion that it warranted a reply from NMC late last Monday night. The reply was one of indignation, stating that the criticism they received was undeserved.

"We admit we sometimes can be inaccurate, and that's why we don't have to look for an irrelevant excuse that you wouldn't even be able to believe."

For what it is worth though, the NMC has recently come through with their forecasts. Recently, the Tuesday forecast they released in Beijing indicated a high of 12 degrees Celsius and a low of minus 2 Celsius.

This forecast was identical to what the U.S. website Weather Underground also forecasted.

With the ruble on decline, Russia has needed to roll back on their expenses. Among those they reduced spending on was the weather forecasting services.

Last last month, Russia was leading on the emerging stock decline. The new situation saw Russian equities lead a global loss and the ruble plunge lower and lower. The early decline in oil prices was also a factor for the decline in the ruble.

The Arctic sea ice is a'melting and the Chicago River will soon be underwater! I must ask; if the ice cubes in my whiskey glass melt, will the whiskey rise and pour out on to the table and then flood the kitchen floor?

Well hell,I'm too drunk to figger that out so I'm switching to Homemade Whiskey which don't need no ice to begin with. Prosit!

Ummm, fellas (and Dolls);  The magnetic pole is wobbling around, causing quite a bit of fluctuation in the amount of solar energy (and where) that falls.  Sum-buddy above mentioned that the AGW crowd looks exclusively at the arctic, but ignores the antarctic, which is in fact the largest it's ever been.

No, I didn't provide links.  Look the shit up.

Well ya know, I am from Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin and them parts.  Well, ya, itsa been a cold one lately.  But ya know thatsa what winter is.  We get'er every year round here.  And the wind she's a been a blowin around here.  Ya. Ain't no one really complaining because it's get's darned cold around this neck of the woods this time of year.  Naw, it ain't really been that cold too bad.  Ya, we know that though about here.  It keeps the mosquitoes down, eh?

I can speak Minnesota dialect better than I can write it but it is something like that.  Mr.s Russian M wants to leave this place but it is not THAT cold.  This has not been that bad.  It is not good but we have seen far worse.  It is raw outside.  You get used to it though.  If you have your vehicles ready for winter they should all start and mine all do.  I watch the weather in looked like if was going to be very cold in South Carolina.  They are not used to that so I sure that it is leaving a mark.  I thought I saw -2F for Charleston this morning.  I do not recall ever seeing that before.

In the northern prairie states we take it on the chin evey year.  I grew up here.  The wind blows making it unbearable to go outside but you acclimate.  I can go outside in a t-shirt right now because my body has made the adjustments.  Today I think we hit a high of 10F and it felt warm so we opened the windows to let some fresh air in.  Condensation flows out the windows like a steam pipe from a steam ship.  I feel bad because I like the Carolinians.  Their houses are not insulated like ours are however.  I hope no one gets hurt.

I just checked the weather forecast and it looks like we warm for a bit up but then go right back into another deep freeze over the weekend.
