Ex-Plunge Protection Team Whistleblower: "Governments Control Markets; There Is No Price Discovery Anymore"

Tyler Durden's picture

One year after the great stock market crash in 1987, US President Ronald Reagan launched the "Working Group on Financial Markets." Conspiracy theorists believe, however, that the real task of this committee is to protect against a renewed slump in the stock market. In the jargon of Wall Street, the working group is known as the "Plunge Protection Team."

One glimpse at a few days suring 2007/8 and it is clear that 'someone' with infinitely deep pockets was able to support markets on several critical days - though, of course, anyone proclaiming intervention was propagandized away as a conspiracy theory wonk. However, as Dr. Pippa Malmgren - a former member of the U.S. President’s Working Group on Financial Markets - it is not conspiracy theory, it is conspiracy fact: "there's no price discovery anymore by the market... governments impose prices on the market."

In this 38 minute interview Lars Schall, for Matterhorn Asset Management, speaks with Dr Pippa Malmgren, a US financial advisor and policy expert based in London. Dr Malmgren has been a member of the U.S. President’s Working Group on Financial Markets (a.k.a. the “Plunge Protection Team”). They address, inter alia:

Still don't believe?

Here is Scott Nations in 2008 getting "Schiff'd" by the CNBC anchors (Liesman) and some other guest muppet when he dares to suggest the Fed is intervening and that the President's Working Group (i.e. Plunge Protection Team) is hard at work...

"look at the market action on the 10th and 28th and tell me what else might have generated a 100 point rally in the S&P under that situation?" Liesman fobs him off as some conspiracy wonk...

Yep looks normal to us... 10/10/2008

and 10/28/2008

Those are 100 point moves on a 700/800 S&P!! Nothing to see here eh Liesman, Kiernan, Quick?

And of course there's last October's Bullared bounce... the longest most consistent trend higher in stocks ever.

Pippa IMO is a very clever plant.  I have heard and seen her now at least a 1/2 dz times.  Her in your face with what a reasonably coherent observer can see is even more plus sized to earn some cred points.  Then we get BS like  Bitcoin is SEXY and gold is not an effective hedge.....so yeah TPTB see they have to throw some raw meat in the discussion BUT then the soft pedal comes.   Its classic next level propaganda yeah like BITCOIN is not anything the Bankster Gubmint Cartel can't manage....seriously.  Whomever is her promotions team they is good.  Her paint and plaster team is even better....Unless she was out doing Jaeger shots until 5 am before I saw her no way CAN she look that good....  She is good and smart but not showing any new skin just confirming what most that are paying attention already know and then saying oh no worries in the end TPTB will figure it out.....uh....I'm OUT

Some are taking a lot more of the system then they ever put in.  Much of it well before or at the cusp of retirement.

A family with gross income below 50K with 4 or 6 or more children is costing upwards of the gross just in education costs in most of the country.  They will never make enough to pay for their own children's education costs once the retirement of the educators and bureaucrats is considered -let alone any tax credits or ACA subsidies and the like even if they never actually receive WIC or section 8 housing or other overt support.

Disability claims have increased tremendouly since the 2008 crash.  People suddenly became disabled in much higher numbers than historically just as soon as the economy soured!  Did they all somwhow hurt themselves opening the envelope with the pink slip in it?

Look at the skyrocketing costs draining the elder-care and medicare system.  Drugs ( even what may arguably be recreational drugs in the case of such as Viagra )including rampant growth in the use of insulin, statins, blood-pressure meds etc.., surgeries: new knees, spinal fusion, to say nothing of the expense of electric mobility carts and care subsidies both in and out of home...

"I was just going for accuracy."

I'm sure you were, but you went off course. What is happening is socialist in nature (Statist if you prefer). Taking control of markets and manipulating them for political ends is exactly what socialism does. It's part of creating a façade to give the (false) appearance of everything going according to .gov plan. Whereas in fact the .gov meddling and interference introduces internal pressures which build up and create distortions. Enter what is being called 'crony capitalism'. But corporatism and fascism are more familiar terms because it's all happened before. See Mussolini.

Exactly the same thing happens within society itself. Eventually these economic/societal distortions blow and all hell breaks loose. At this point, the socialist solution is to impose more socialism but due to resistance in the economy and society, this mounting socialism has to be imposed by ridiculous new laws, enforced by jackboots, because socialists on their way to utopia cannot counternance anybody acting outside of their prescriptive edicts as this may lead to a challenge to their power & control and their journey to utopia.

You eventually end up with a totalitarian system of government with ever more State control: more meddling, more laws, more regulations. The State will never admit being what it is because its leaders will always find someone else to blame, often another government which leads to war to distract away from yet another failure of socialism.

It is always The People who have to pick up the pieces and clear up the mess after an indulgence into the murky world of socialism and its inevitable failure. It appears that new generations do not learn from history.

There is nothing about this that at all resembles actual socialism.  This is simply State Capitalism.  Socialism would have totally different people in charge, these leaders would be subject to automatic recall, and there would be greater participatory input from those lower down in an organization.

I really don't understand who taught everyone here that state-control = socialism.  This is merely a reflection of failed socialism that transmogrified into state capitalism in the USSR before collapse.  The USSA is in the very same state, only it never ever ever ever had socialism or a revolution with socialist aims.

"This is simply State Capitalism"

State Capitalism = Corporatism = Fascism and "Fascism is Socialism with a capitalist veneer" (ie: full circle back to State Capitalism)

Two historical examples of people who were lifelong socialists but adopted fascism are Mussolini and more recently Tony Blair.

The "markets" are a policy tool. It's a way to get the upper-middle and lower-upper classes to come to heel on a variety of policy issues. Jack up the market, and they forget about financial regulation. Drive it down and you have free reign to institute any policy or law you want. The market is a pressure point on the class that can actually inflict harm on the oligarchy.

Well the theory is that without the intervention we still would have needed multi-trillions in debt and printing, but it would be to a crashed economy.  By doing it early you save no money but live in pretty much a non-crashed economy.  Nobody (outside the clueless MSM) doubts the intervention anymore, but neither has anybody documented exactly how it has been working.  Looks pretty obvious that somebody, somewhere, is either buying and selling individual issues, maybe ALL issues, or else is dictating the pricing levels directly.  I'd sure like to know which.  Maybe both, of course.

Rent walkouts point to strains in U.S. farm economy

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Across the U.S. Midwest, the plunge in grain prices to near four-year lows is pitting landowners determined to sustain rental incomes against farmer tenants worried about making rent payments because their revenues are squeezed.

Some grain farmers already see the burden as too big. They are taking an extreme step, one not widely seen since the 1980s: breaching lease contracts, reducing how much land they will sow this spring and risking years-long legal battles with landlords.

The tensions add to other signs the agricultural boom that the U.S. grain farming sector has enjoyed for a decade is over. On Friday, tractor maker John Deere cut its profit forecast citing falling sales caused by lower farm income and grain prices.

One of the things that hasn't been reported on is basically just how many farmers today are really modern 'sharecroppers' who essentially have almost all of the risk pushed down on them.  In a lot of ways it is not much different that the Ante Bellum South where you had the wealthy white land owners turn poor farmers (black and white) into slightly more than economic serfs.

Its not a mystery that gold has not faired well during all this money printing its that QE money is directed into specific areas where banks are mostly invested such as morgages, stocks and generally debts which carry interest payments. So you see distortedly high prices in all these areas banks are interested as this is where new money goes to ensure debts stay good and interest payments keep flowing in for the banks and you see little to no change even delfated prices in areas they are not interested like gold for example as gold does not tend to be a debt obligation on bank balance sheets that carrys interest.

I spent $450 bucks at 3 grocery stores shopping sales stuff mostly on Saturday which is really insane.I spoke to my buddy who manages a Saefway in my town and he said that unless they have the Five dollar Friday sales they would be in the toilet totally. He also said that selling at that price is total deflation and their margins are being destroyed. He does not see how they can survive and he is worried about his job.

I am also worried about mine my company is 65 % off sales and revenue yoy and we are headed south.

I am a old guy and never have seen the economy this bad no matter what you read contray. I am in the auto finance business and deal with poor credit but the captives and money center banks are buying that paper hand over fist just to stay alive. 26 % of new car franchise sales are sub 600 fico scores and 34 % are lease because the good credit types cannot afford the payment. The Manhiem auto auction in PA had 5400 cars to auction 2 weeks ago and 1700 were 2015 and 2014 models years with under ten thousand miles which were repos.

Thanks cheap money for all the economic distortions ruin what ever you want and the peoples lives so you can buy another beach house. I have a hard working 21 year old and I really feel bad for him and his friends they will never have peace of mind or a happy life.

I can add my perspective as a lawyer who handles hi-tech bullshit.  Those assholes and their 5 man teams are bringing in absurd funding rounds - I have clients who take in $2-50 million a year in funding.  These funds largely come from VCs that are more or less government/intel.  The companies don't make any profits and just keep getting more funding and bridge loans because everyone believes they'll exit.  My clients who do turn profits are working in disgusting advertising skim operations or are benefitting directly from the US spy-matrix grid expansion.  The ones who do well are the ones who know how to scam the American lie.  I miss real people who work for real and contribute to their community.  That's why Upgrayedd is pulling an HonestAnne soon.

I am an old guy too.  I know what you are saying.

In Canada years ago, we were being sold "Free" trade.  We thought we could buy American goods and bring them over sans duty and tax.  I don't know what free trade meant, except I know companes like Nike and Apple are working people to suicide in far off lands for less than the price of a MacDonald's breakfast in the USA for a days wage.

Capitalism works if a company treats their employees fairly, but when the top syphons off everything, treats their employees like slave, even monitoring if they have a cigarette at home or not, we have a big problem.

We need a major reset allright, not in Russia, but in DC.  There is going to be some sufferring for a bit, but you can't tell me there aren't thousands of homeless not suffering now.

We need change, but not the banker/politician/lawyer type.  We need the go back to Constitution type change.

Do you really think it makes a difference if they buy stocks or bonds?

How much more explicit do they need to be?

If this is what qualifies as a conspiracy, no wonder you all think they are everywhere.

actually, it does matter if they buy stocks or bonds, bonds are wildly more important, and artificially low interest rates affect almost everyone (some in a good way, some not), as the vast majority of adults have some form of debt, be it car loan, mortgage, line of credit, student loan etc.

Relatively few people own stocks in any meaningful amount.

And of course QE has artifically supported commodity and precious metals prices too.

But those bubbles seem to be deflating rapidly now.

In Praise of Price Discovery

For six years financial markets have been drugged into zombiedom by maniacal central bankers who have violated every known rule of sound money and financial market honesty. In expanding their collective balance sheets from $5 trillion to $16 trillion over the past decade, for instance, they have midwifed a planet-wide fiscal fraud. Politicians have been enabled to spend and borrow like never before because central banks have swapped trillions of public debt for electronic cash confected from nothing.
