NATO's Not Enough! President Juncker Calls For Creation Of European Army To "React Credibly" To Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

No lessor official than European Commission President (and liar-when-it's-serious) Jean-Claude Juncker has called for the creation of an EU army... in order to show Russia "that [The EU is] serious about defending European values." Juncker explained an EU army would "help us fulfil Europe's responsibilities in the world," arguing that NATO was not enough since not all EU members are part of the alliance. As one stunned euro-skeptic exclaimed, "we have all seen the utter mess the EU has made of the economy, so how can we even think of trusting them with its defence."

The EU is divided on how to deal with an increasingly forthright Russia, but as The FT reports,

The president of the European Commission has called for the creation of an EU army in order to show Russia “that we are serious about defending European values”.

In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Jean-Claude Juncker, who leads the EU’s executive arm, said an EU army would let the continent “react credibly to threats to peace in a member state or a neighbour of the EU”.

...

Mr Juncker said an EU army would “help us to develop a common foreign and security policy, and to fulfil Europe’s responsibilities in the world”. Nato was not a sufficient protection for the EU as not all EU members are part of the alliance, according to Mr Juncker.

...

Some member states, including the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are calling for the bloc to take a much stricter line on its eastern neighbour. Large member states are also split over the idea of an EU army, with the proposals being cautiously welcomed by many senior German politicians but repeatedly dismissed outright by a succession of British governments.

The Brits are out...

British prime minister David Cameron - who argued against Juncker's appointment, claiming that Mr Juncker was too much of a federalist for the position - has repeatedly reassured eurosceptic MPs in his own party that Britain would “never support” any form of EU army.

Responding to Mr Juncker’s comments on Sunday, a government spokeswoman said: “Our position is crystal clear that defence is a national, not an EU responsibility and that there is no prospect of that position changing and no prospect of a European army.”

The Germans are in...

“I support Juncker in building an EU army, if it means the termination of all EU member states’ armies and is controlled by the European Parliament,” tweeted Jan Philipp Albrecht, a German Green MEP.

Furthermore, German Defense Minister von der Leyen went so far as to note, "I think what is most important, it shows up in Europe, 70 years after the Second World War - and 70 years ago we were mortal enemies - that today the peace in Europe, in the European Union stands on firm footing, and we Step by step, more and more firmly establish our alliances, especially in the security policy. This interweaving of armies with a view to provide also have a European army one day, in my opinion, is the future."

Well of course the Germans would prefer this as it is a move towards federalization. But we leave it to a euroskeptic to conclude...

Mike Hookem, a defence spokesman for the anti-EU UK Independence Party, said: “A European army would be a tragedy for the UK. We have all seen the utter mess the EU has made of the eurozone economy, so how can we even think of trusting them with this island’s defence.”

*  *  *

Finally, one quick question - what happens to the 'unified EU army' if Greece gets kicked out (or decides to leave) the EU? Do the Greek 'conscripts' get to leave the looming battlefield with Russia?

They order the Greeks to hand over all their gold. Then the EU Army goes door to door, scans for hidden gold, and if they find any, they execute every member of the household. They leave a million crucified Greeks along the major highways, so everyone sees the example and is properly motivated to comply with the new empire.

Obama, et al., are on a personal vendetta against Putin and Russia over losing face big time with Syria and Snowden.  They don't care who gets hurt if they can just hurt Putin.

I don't understand how the Europeans got suckered in.  Putin and Russia are no threat to them - their best customer.  Jeezus, Russia is still even willing to sell to Ukraine, which loves to kill local Russian ethnic types and does it just about every day with relative impunity.

Ukraine is utterly irrelevant to the security and economy of Europe.

Europe has been hoping to keep its EURO ponzi scheme alive by adding a new player - the Ukraine. From a european perspective, i.e. the viewpoint of a Bruxelles buerocrat the Maidan putsch was the start signal for the beginning integration process, drafted by the EU integration delegate Sebastian Fuelle. Unfortunately the professionals involved in Bruxelles entirely missed the Russian position and the quarrel tore up the Ukraine in two useless parts that will not be re-united in the foreseeable future. Without the straw fire of any other credit induced boom from the Ukraine and burdened with the billion of additional costs the european ship shall now sink fast.

Back last year before the Sochi Olympics the LGBT Nazis were demonizing Russia.     The USA media was full of how Russians hate and beat up gays.

Fact is more gays are beat up in the USA than any nation on earth. and its NOT illegal to be gay in Russia.

Arms' dealers have bills to pay too!

"I can confirm the fact that any Binladin Group investment in Carlyle has been terminated or is being terminated. It amounted to a $2m investment in the Carlyle II Fund, which was anyway a very small portion of a $1.3bn fund. In the scheme of the investments and in the scheme of the business of either party it was very small. We have to get this into perspective. But I think there was a sense that there were questions being raised and some controversy, and for such a small amount of money it was something that we wanted to put behind us. It was just a business decision."

But if the Binladins' connection to the Carlyle Group lasted no more than six years, the current President Bush's own links to the firm go far deeper. In 1990, he was appointed to the board of one of Carlyle's first purchases, an airline food business called Caterair, which they eventually sold at a loss. He left the board in 1992, later to become Governor of Texas. Shortly thereafter, he was responsible for appointing several members of the board which controlled the investment of Texas teachers' pension funds. A few years later, the board decided to invest $100m of public money in the Carlyle Group. The firm's magic touch was already bringing results. Today, it is proving as fruitful as ever.

"Among other private equity firms, New York-based Veritas Capital Management firm that employs many former high-ranking military officials received Pentagon contracts to the tune of more than $2.2 billion. Veritas is the 41st ranked defense contractor"

"Vectura Holding Co., another New York-based group, got deals to the tune of $1 billion, while companies controlled by Berkshire Hathaway, led by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, won contracts worth $688 million. Companies owned by Green Equity Investors II LP ($275 million) and Gores Technology Group ($153 million) also received substantial defense money."

Keynesianism.  Let's go spend quadrillions of euros so we can "destroy stuff" on a grand scale, thereby "improving the economy" (broken window fallacy), and assuring an eventual nuclear war on the continent.

These freaks know exactly what's going on.  These freaks know Russia has no designs on taking over Europe.  These freaks know perfectly well that they and the USSA have pushed military assets increasingly closer and closer and closer and now right up against Russia, forcing Russia to act as they are (short of handing the territory of Russia on a silver platter to Europe and/or the USSA).

For Russia to put thousands of nuclear missles in Cuba would be vastly LESS egregious than has already been done to Russia in terms of "closing in on them".  And yet, these neo-con and neo-con inspired cretins pretend Russia is being aggressive.

What a farce.  What a complete farce the predators-DBA-mainstream-media has made of human beings.  At this point the sheeple are so brain-damaged and clueless (and distracted by nonsense), the real nefarious, diabolical, hyper-dangerous predators are portrayed as the "endangered good guys", and forced almost every semi-aware honest soul to do something they would never imagine doing... defend Russia.

What a sick world.  The EU is trying everything in the book to deflect attention from the utter disaster that is the EU and euro.  Even playing with total destruction is not below them.  Nothing is.

If these morons imagine "uncle" will save them, they are truly insane.  The only way to win is to not play the game.  War Games, 1985

Now hold on...

Maybe Juncker is the sane one here.

After reading about US Gen."Precious body fluids" Breedlove's bizarre claims of Russian troop movements and numbers and his calling for use of force in a civil war on Russia's front porch, I think the Eurocrats have discovered that they have hitched their defense wagon to a very dangerous US driven clown-car that will end in tears and recriminations in a best case scenario. The worse case is too horrible to contemplate.

They may be learning that being a vassal to NATO and America's global ambitions for Eurasian dominance may not be in their best interests as the schism between Breedloves lunatic ravings and Merkel/Hollande's  diplomatic outreach to Putin widens.

Looked at in the present geo-political context, Junckers proposal looks like the only rational move, given the aggressive tone of the US propaganda mill. I'd be very nervous if the tough talking guy behind me was pushing me into a barroom brawl knowing that I'm the guy who will get the beatdown when it comes.

It's a moot point in regards to the situation in Ukraine anyway because it would take The EU Commission 2 years of meetings to settle on a uniform style and color.

Here is a little analysis of the European value done in 1960s.

"This Europe, which never stopped talking of man, which never stopped proclaiming its sole concern was man, we now know the price of suffering humanity has paid for every one of its spiritual victories.

When I look for man in European lifestyles and technology I see a constant denial of man, an avalanche of murders.

Man’s condition, his projects and collaboration with others on tasks that strengthen man’s totality, are new issues which require genuine inspiration.

The whole of European thought developed in places that were increasingly arid and increasingly inaccessible. Consequently, it was natural that the chances of encountering man became less and less frequent.

Two centuries ago, a former European colony decided to catch up with Europe. It succeeded so well that the United States of America became a monster, in which the taints, the sickness and the inhumanity of Europe have grown to appalling dimensions.

Let us reexamine the question of man…It is the very basic question of not dragging man in directions which mutilate him, of not imposing on his brain tempos that rapidly obliterate and unhinge it. The notion of catching up must not be used as a pretext to brutalize man, to tear him from himself and his inner consciousness, to break him, to kill him.

The Third World must start over a new history of man…for Europe, for ourselves and for humanity, comrades, we must make a new start, develop a new way of thinking, and endeavor to create a new man. "

The wars within inner cities and depressed areas are a part of city planning.  Someone has to buy the drugs which fund covert operations, and who better than a hopeless stressed out child who lays awake at night listening to drunken and drugged voices taking senseless on the other side of the wall?  Addicts provide a customer base the drug cartel can count on, as well as their investors.

The last 15 years has seen the US citizens go into the streets many times, at one point 50,000 crossed a bridge in Oakland Calilfornia in response to an veteran's injuries derived from a police officer's intentional targeting him and then preventing help to reach him as he lay unconscious and bleeding on the concrete.

Not a shot fired.

Fuck off.  If there is trouble in the USA, you can be assured it was imported intentionally to create a Sunni Shiite situation.  They are trying their best to turn the Black community against the White community, as we can see.  But we work, live, eat, and learn together as well as pray.

If there is a war, it will be to deflect attention away from the collapsing Ponzi scheme as a cause of deliberately failed policies, and onto a war that leaves the people without.  Haven't you learned that yet?

1.5 million active duty military personnel, 500 warships, 7'000 tanks, 18'000 AFVs, 9'000 pieces of artillery, 900 attack helicopters, 2'000 warplanes of national forces is enough

An EU army is very bullish for Greece and Spain. All the unemployed males can be drafted inth the EU imperial army, and this will require the issuance of EU treasury bonds. It is also a good way to get the UK out and lock the rest in more tightly. But the EU will need constitutional changes to make this happen. They will need a strong chief executive to command the army, and direct EU taxes to pay for it. The most efficient way is to create the Office Of The Caesar to wield supreme executive power, and to transfer all VAT tax powers to the European Parliament. They will also need EU courts, police and prisons, and elite Centurions to crucify deserters and draft dodgers along major highways.

The comments there, are Pro-Russian by something 90%+

Now, how are they going to react to this?  my impression from comments about the war in Estern Ukraine  is,  They are GOING TO BE RIGHT BEHIND THE European Army, CLOSE UP AND PERSONAL. Look it  up, the Crimean War 1853-1856

It is difficult to determine which is more obnoxous: British arrogance or Zionist chutzpah.  While flaunting their exceptionalism and "autonomy," these two are little more than puppets for US worldwide ambitions.  As a speculation, it would be interesting to see how they would manage if their strings were cut.  Perceptive Europeans are becoming more aware each day that their long term interests are no longer parallel to US ambitions.  They have already been damaged by the loss of their Russian export market, as a result of US overreach in Ukraine.  There will be more such events in the future.  Neo-con Vicky Nuland was more right than she knew when she demanded to f..k the EU.

If US foreign policy had any logic, it would now withdraw from NATO as that organization's objective has been accomplished. But pentagon ambition and burearcratic inertia will win the day.  While it contnues to keep a defunct NATO alive, the US will exhaust its resources while Europe continues its welfare state self indulgence.

again... central europe is but a mere geographical expression that lacks geopolitical substance today. indeed the reunification of germany, logically speaking, will not lead to the rebirth of central europe, but, will ultimately lead as we see very clearly today in the new cold war[?] part redux. ironically, the new battle for europe is unfolding fast and furious... fomenting, frothing, breaching east v. west, literally overnite? there is a new battle for europe and most importantly, for the heartland of eurasia.

germany will no doubt choose the east... aligning with russia and china. this will be bad news for poland, hungary, and and other former satelite countries. this explains the ussa building up forces with current satelite countries. germany has had its fill of being a feudal state/ colonial slave to a bankrupt hegemony shored up by f-35's?

their quasi-pacifism is being questioned by liberal forces? remember that liberalism leans on power, a quiet power, yet a power nevertheless. this in turn could make germany a balancing power-house in its own right between the atlantist and the ultimate prize... the eurasian heartland. england wants out of eu, so whats left are nation-states being bled economically/ politically to death by france, spain[?], [italy], brussels, belgium etel..

The Europeans want an army, once they have an army they will want to use their army, not a lot of point in its existence otherwise....against Russia, result millions of people dead, but not to worry the psychopaths in charge will ensure none of their wives and children get killed.

Europeans, except Germans, Fins and sERBS, cannot fight.

French army is a joke

Italian army reliably lost every battle and every war.

Spain hasn't got any army, they have a bunch of soldiers, but no army.

British army is nonexistent (o, they have 4 sub, but only 1 is able to get out from harbour)

Nobody in Europe wants to fight any wor. That moron is a dreamer. He got this script from NATO.

NATO wants to get rid of the old Europe and in a new incarnation include only countries on the russian border without the right of veto.

US wants to run NATO alone, in today's constelaltion it is impossible, so let us implode the current NATO command structure and bild a new one.

That is in my opinion the background of such a stupid idea, like european army.

NATO demonrstared its accountability already in Afghanistan, when Italian troops paid protection money to Taliban. Now it is down for individual countries to protect their values. A threat, real or imaginative from Russia should not be the first priority..

Ursula van der Leyen is a joke. Luxembourg is a joke. There can be no EU Army because there is no democratic Executive in Europe. You cannot have military force at the disposal of unelected administrators - even NATO does not do that nor the UNO.

There are maybe 3 countries in Europe with a military, the rest just buy F-16s for the bribes and do nothing much.

There is no threat from Russia if you don't invade it.....Poland had a bad habit under Pilsudski of invading Ukraine and planning to attack Germany, it wants to be the dominant player in Central Europe so it can be "Hungary" to Brussels "Austria" and have a dual power base moving the locus of EU power to Warsaw.

The EU is an Empire not a Commonwealth

Is an EU army a way to finesse NATO and end American domination of Europe's military decisions and weapon sales?

If England, America's proxy in the EU, is against it and Germany is for it, this may be the way to finally end America's meddling in Europe's defense decisions

"I support Juncker in building an EU army, if it means the termination of all EU member states’ armies and is controlled by the European Parliament,” tweeted Jan Philipp Albrecht, a German Green MEP.

Jesus fucking Christ. So we lost WW2, but hey, drop your guns and give us all your armies. Trust us, we will treat you fairly of course, and you will be managed by a bunch of beauocrats in Belgium.

And we wont fight wars anywhere here or overseas for the USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia etc etc...unless it absolutely essentiasl to our well being (our - bankster elite)

This Junker dude is the beaurocratic version of Adolf Hitler and Jo Stalin.

You can just see Junker starting a fucking great war killing 100s of millions to support some fucked up USA, neo-con, Zionist plan to improve their hegemony... with himself hidden away in some USA safe haven, ten thousand miles from the fighting.

But hey, so long as his Oligarch backers are happy....whats few hundred million deaths between friends.

Never give a beaurocrat power.....history is rife with jumped up civil servants being murderous egoists.

Junker and Germany just dropped a great big turd in the punch bowl for all to see....Now we know what the goals are behind the scenes. Russia and China will now most certainly be bound closer together because of this risk.

Strasbourg in France, home of the European Parliamnet and the highest European Court,  This is going to be the seat of the Government of Euroland which is including all present EU members except Britain, which is the only member not declaring that the Euro is the money of the whole EU in the future..

Natural Euroland needs a defense ministry and an army. The headquarter is going to be in Strasbourg too.

The US and UK made it possible that this dream is soon becoming true by creating war and chaos around the world and finally in Europe it self (Ukraine).  Their failed policy is now giving birth to the rise of Euroland which is an economic giant much bigger than the US when comparing things produced and not things consumed.

Does anybody doubt, that Euroland would not be capable to defend itself? Who would dare to attack Euroland (except the US/UK by doing it covertly through economic warfare) ?

Euroland, Russia, Iran, turkey, India, China would then be the big players on the big island of Eurasia with its annex Africa.

I can picture a scene in which a violent protest against draconian government measures,on  the streets of a British city, is met with an EU army in full riot gear. Made up of violent fascists with no sovereign allegiance, they open fire on the crowd, killing hundreds.

This will be the norm in this neo-liberal police state envisaged by Junckers and his cohorts. It must never be allowed to happen.
