"Cancel All Student Debt" - The Petitions Begin

Tyler Durden's picture

With global moral hazard having long ago become institutionalized, and codified as "monetary policy", catering almost exclusively to the TBTF entities in the financial sector, we were surprised it took as long as it did for Obama to announce (as he did last week), that the administration is now studying "new bankruptcy options" for student loan borrowers: code word for an across the board student debt moratorium, or forgiveness.

To wit from "Student Aid Bill of Rights: Taking Action to Ensure Strong Consumer Protections for Student Loan Borrowers":

The President is directing his Cabinet and White House advisers, working with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to study whether consumer protections recently applied to mortgages and credit cards, such as notice and grace periods after loans are transferred among lenders and a requirement that lenders confirm balances to allow borrowers to pay off the loan, should also be afforded to student loan borrowers and improve the quality of servicing for all types of student loans.  The agencies will develop recommendations for regulatory and legislative changes for all student loan borrowers, including possible changes to the treatment of loans in bankruptcy proceedings and when they were borrowed under fraudulent circumstances.

Well, it didn't take long for virtually every leftist group: from the Daily Kos, to Democracy for America, to Campaign for America's Future and many more, to jump on this bandwagon, and demand - you guessed it - that the administration "cancel all student debt."

Sure, why not: leaving aside the very touchy topic of personal responsibility and accountability, in a world in which record debt is merely "replaced" by even more debt, and in which profits are privatized but losses are always socialized with taxpayers and future generations bearing the brunt in the form of a record $18.2 trillion in public debt (and some $7 trillion more if one adds the government-backed GSEs which one should), why not go ahead and "cancel" the debt. And don't bother trying to explain the simple math that debt is never cancelled, as every liability is someone's asset, and that asset holder will demand to be made whole in the form of more debt elsewhere or else, like Hank Paulson in 2008, it will scream mutual assured destruction and threaten to blow up the world unless bailed out.

In short, what all the concerned entities listed above are saying is not "cancel all student debt", which is impossible, but share the burden of the 43.2 million "student debtors" shown in the chart below, with everyone.

After all, "it's only fair."

Finally, since nobody, anywhere is harboring any doubt that any of the record debt the world is burdened with will ever be repaid, and instead will eventually be hyperinflated away even it means paradropping bags of cash, this proposal actually has a good chance of passing (sorry future generations not only in the US but around the globe).

Once it does, and once colleges know they can charge anything for tuition, room and board - because the debt funding it will be socialized and ultimately "forgiven" - prepare for the green line below, already exponential, to go... vertical.

The system protects the 1% from the other 99%.  The 1%'s assets are the 99%'s debts.  Cancelling debt is the same as taking the 1%'s fortune away.  You think .gov will sanction that?

Nah, I spent five years in a state university earning a science degree.... after an unlucky accident I couldn't make paymnts for two months, and the debt was immediately turned over to a private agency, which automatically sent me a bill for the IMMEDIATE payment of my balance, PLUS a $10000 "penalty".
Of course they were going to "finance" my penalty...

So, now I work in the EU, where the government doesn't even recognize any possibility to collect against me... no possibility of garnishment, no possibility of a judgement or any papers to be served. The government here won't even release my financial or residence information to private US institutions or even the IRS.

I'm willing to settle on the original balance, the PRINCIPLE, but short of that, Dred Scott AIN'T going back to the plantation this time!

I'll suffer here and take the hit, with free and great health care, guaranteed public and private pensions, and a constitutional guarantee of good coffee, crusty rolls, and nutella every day of my life....

You're gonna eat this shit sandwich, one way or another... let the banks tkae a hit now, instead of the whole lot getting thrown on the taxpayers later!

You are crazy to think they won't release your information to the IRS.  The EU already releases financial information to the IRS if it is asked.  If you are a citizen of US then you are covered by FACTA.  If the IRS wants your information they will get it through your bank.

If you can't beat them, join them. Have a rather large mortgage with fixed interest until 2027. No further debt. With a world drowning in debt, it's a safe bet i think. But for savers and hard work to pay with hard cash, it's a fucking shame. Helicopter money for everyone, people in debt must pay off their debt first, in that way there is compensation for honest people. But i'm afraid it won't work that way.

What puzzles me is why, with the high cost of education in the US, that more students don't study abroad.  Or maybe they do, and we're just not hearing about it?

If I were of university age today, I'd get my degree in Russia, or maybe China.  It can't be any more expensive that the USA, and you have the additional benefit of learning a foreign language, which looks pretty good on a resume.

I didn't finish college and paid my own way, never accepting a dime of debt. I made my own way, doing the best I could. I'm not all that smart, so if I can do it these cunts with advanced degrees should be able to figure it out. Doesn't graduating college mean you're smart now? That's what we're told.

If this thing goes through I will consider it my civic duty to spit in the face of everyone who took the money, and to cauterize the genitals of whoever came up with the plan.

It would be interesting to see the economic result of a one time check sent out to every head of household for 30k, backed by the trillion dollar coin rather than more debt.  Mandatory instructions that anyone with student loan debt must allocate the entire amount to paying it off. A debt jubilee of sorts.  Obviously this would be inflationary, but at least most folks would be out of debt, and the bankers would be paid off with cheap dollars.

Dear President Obama, Senators, and Members of Congress:

We'd like for you to continue lying to us, our children, and the future generations about the debt and how awful assuming it all it.  We'd prefer to pretend, like you, that none of this matters, that nobody is at fault, that your promises weren't all lies we were wrong to pretend to believe, that we expect you to lie and cheat us because we lie to ourselves out of convenience from having to think.

That $1.3 trillion of debt, that we told our children was ok to assume, that bloated corpse of an education system, that kleptocratic financing that has been shackled around the necks of the youth, that we participate in and choose to believe it is fine that the price of education is rising faster than wages, if one can get a job, that putrid abortion of government approved and Wall St adored student loan pile...we'd like to have a do over.

We've chose to throw sanity to the wind, yet again, and force you to makes us adore and worship you even more, by casting away all logic and responsibility, because that is why we vote for you after all, and wipe our asses and apply powder and whisper sweet pillow talk to us about how it's all going to be alright.

I'm drinking buddies with several of the profs now.  They're good guys, but a fucking far cry from brilliant.  Again, it's just a State school.   These jokers teach class 2-3 times a week, the TA/GA teach as much or more.  The TA/GA speak broken engrish, so I imagine the classes suck ass.  It's all a phony fucking scam.  My kids attend private school and are doing well.  I'm already gearing them to do something other than college.  If everyone is doing it, then go the other way.

Attention people: There is no real obligation to pay your debts. There are supposed moral reasons to pay, but these only work for moral societies (like constitutions). Worry only about legal reasons. Even if you are a moral person it is immoral to do business with immoral people.

If you dont pay your debts there will be consecuences. Rather than being afraid of them, weight them against the benefits of not paying. Its the same for any other crime. You can commit any crime you want as long as you are willing to go to jail or be executed if caught. There are some pretty good deals in my opinion, depending on the particular infraction.

Because if they could, THE BANKSTERS NEVER WOULD HAVE MADE THE LOANS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

This entire fucking bubble is the consequence of the fucking government trying to "make education more affordable." Just like EVERY FUCKING GOVERNMENT PROGRAM from the War on Poverty, to the Affordable Care Act, to the Bailouts for Banksters to "save the economy," the government has managed to accomplish for education the EXACT OPPOSITE of its advertised purpose.

The answer is to RETORACTIVELY make student loans dischargable in banckruptcy and FUCK THE FUCKING BANKSTERS. Right along with you IDIOTS who were not only stupid enough to take the loans to buy an education for which you were charged 5 or 10 times what it was worth, but clueless enough to pay the money back. You are wrong. Government guarantees for student loans went out the window five years ago.

"Prior to 2010, Federal loans included both direct loans—originated and funded directly by the U.S. Department of Education—and guaranteed loans—originated and funded by private investors, but guaranteed by the federal government. Guaranteed loans were eliminated in 2010 through the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act and replaced with direct loans because of a belief that guaranteed loans benefited private student loan companies at taxpayers expense, but did not reduce costs for students."

Yeah, and who is it that is making a FOOL of themselves? That would be YOU, dipshit.

Bankruptcy is the best solution. If someone discharges his/her debts through bankruptcy, there will be severe limitations on his/her ability to borow money for any purpose for up to 7 years. This will encourage the person with the means to service his/her debts to do so rather than walk away from them. But, for the person who cannot, bankruptcy affords such person a chance to renew life, albeit after living an austere "pay as you go" lifestyle for up to 7 years.

Sat, 03/14/2015 - 18:40 | 5889723 Northern Lights
Northern Lights's picture

You know, I don't think the limitations will be to severe.  The only difference will be that the interest rate will be higher than had they had a clean record.

In the ordinary scheme of things, as long as the borrower can pay the interest on the loan, the lender won't be too concerned.  Usually, the lender will set up the loan in such a way that they'll make double the principal in interest.

US colleges battle death spiral as enrollment drops

“Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen has predicted that as many as half of the more than 4,000 universities and colleges in the U.S. may fail in the next 15 years.”

Forfeit loan repayment -- in exchange for - - Forfeit degree(s) and related licensures, Forfeit right to benefit in any way from any government welfare programs, Forfeit the right run for any elected office or to be employed by or contract with any federal, state or local government.

Agree wholeheartedly.

If an individual wants their student loan debt cancelled, he/she MUST turn in their University/College Degree to each of the institutions who gave it to them.  That degree will then be cancelled, and the individuals scholastic achievements will be cancelled and it will look like they never went to college to begin with.

That, and their credit should be marked for no less than 10 years.

Fo Sho! Then we can all pay for them to be in prison via tax dollars! I just don't fucking care anymore.

They can just terminate their SSN if they want to get out of debt. It's not that hard.

Edit:

Fact is, this is a lose, lose situation no matter how you slice it. Only about 15-20% of people should be going to college. It is being sold (just like houses were not long ago) to people who have no place going to college, myself included. Then, on top of the loan they give you to pay for tuition they offer more loans (10,000 more than my tuition in my instance. I didn't take it though) for things like "housing" and "food". Any idiot can see that it's predatory. If you can't afford to pay for your own well being, you shouldn't be going to college. Now we have almost 50% of the population with a degree and they have become completely worthless. How can it be an achievement or something to be proud of if everyone has one? A college degree has become nothing more that a mantle piece to make people feel better, as if they accomplished something hard. It's not. I can't believe that the majority of the people I went to college with even earned a degree at all. Fucks sake, some classes there was NO turned in work at all!!! You just had to show up... That's not anything to be proud of.

There are basically a few options on the table as I see it:

1. Discharge all the debt. Result: Paid for by tax dollars.

2. The loans just don't get paid back. Result: Wall street loses, then will be lifted back up by QE or some other new form of assinine and bogus financing. End Result: Paid for by tax dollars.

3. Debtors prisons. Result: Paid for by tax dollars.

4: The 1.2 Trillion is paid in full! But of course, this can't happen unless wages go up significantly in the PRIVATE sector (that's you small business, franchisees, and mega corps) which in turn makes wall street lose again only to be propped back up by the fed. Result: Still... Paid for by tax dollars.

Suggest all other possible outcomes here vvv.

unlike the real estate bubble no one got ripped off in the student loan market. there is fraud in the system. there are schools that are schools in name only. there are students scamming the loan availability, and parents also doing the same thing. it doesn't help that congress has made the nonpayment of the loan a crime because of all the penalties involved(you can't leave the copuntry).

despite all this addressable shit everyone who took out a student loan only needed to read the contract to see what they were getting themselves into. i have friends who are just realizing they are on the hook for a quarter million dollars if their kids decide to chose deadbeat for a profession. one is studying music, the other physical therapy, at private colleges. that is plain stupid. a state school costs a quarter of that for the same education. they claim they didn't realize(both degreed). i called them dumbfucks as only a friend can.

For all you folks who claim "the people won't stand for much more", this kind of action is a demonstration of why you are wrong.

The predators-that-be know that the VAST majority will sell themselves and everyone down the river and into abject slavery for a give-away.

Also, see what you have done by allowing the most corrupt predators in history to take control of "the system"?  All they have to do to stay in power is throw crumbs... or even just promise to throw crumbs... or even just pretend to throw crumbs that they KNOW will be thwarted by others in the system.

Those others soon being voted out because the majority now wants freebees and special advantages... real, imagined or perceived... and so any responsible individual is now actually and "officially" their slaves.

Are you one of the suckers... one of the few honorable, productive beings on this planet at this point in history?  If so, wake up and...

SHRUG
SHRUG
SHRUG

And while you're at it.  Liquidate all easy-to-steal property (real-estate, bank-accounts, etc), thoroughly hide any other wealth (precious metals), and make certain they can't get it.  Then borrow all you can, buy more precious metals, hide them thoroughly in diverse places, and then DEFAULT.

And if you have even half a brain, get you and all your property out of dodge (which means, out of all western countries).  And don't leave traces to where you moved.  Adopt a new name if you are leaving debt or defaults (or family) behind.

Don't volunteer to be prey, which you ARE doing if you live anything remotely like a conventional modern life in a western country (as well as many non-western countries).

SHRUG
SHRUG

Otherwise, you support the predators, and punish yourself.

-----

Obviously some ZH posters understand what's happening here.  Obama and comrades know any such program will be stopped by congress, which will make more people vote for democrats in the next election (including president, they hope).  So this is a way to steal the next elections without any need to actually give anything to the unwashed masses.  Very transparent... to anyone with a brain.

First, you need a much more precise definition of 'educated'. In America, that may as well say 'job trained' and enlightenment is much more attainable by those foregoing college and working for a living (preferably abroad).

Education as a public commons is difficult to get past this crowd because they see very little value in anything that isn't strictly devoted to accounting, marketing, or finance.

This is absurd.  I borrowed money through student loans to attend college and pay for my education (in addition to PELL grants and other grants from my church).  I slaved my way through an unpaid internship after graduating, and busted my ass in my career of choice to earn enough money to pay back every cent of my student  loans in full.

So people like myself paid our loans back in full - and the current crop of students wants a debt jubilee?

Here's my take on this:  If a debt jubilee is going to be given to any one group of people - then ALL DEBTS MUST BE CANCELLED - both public and private.  Our government is not supposed to pick winners and losers (although I know it does all the time).

The insanity that is becoming more commonplace these days is very disturbing.  Sheesh...

All of this is so... provincial. Story time...

At a top 5 UK university in the time before 2001 (1998 perhaps?) I remember being in charge of the front desk of the finance part of the University. New Master Degree students (overseas) were coming to pay their tution.

Over three days I took ~£2mm + in neatly printed £50 notes from a long, long line of Chinese students, along with their passports (returned), their visas (checked and returned) and their academic grades (kept - neatly printed copies), all in indentical brown paper envelopes. Full payment for the course, in cash, everytime.

Counted each time, orientation given each time, smile, the "here's all the services our campus provides along with map", pep talk and links to the onsite Chinese speakers' clubs, alongside a gender specific chat (for the males: where to get drunk, where the gym was etc. For the females: well, that's not polite to devulge, but Western sanitary products for free were popular).

Their academic reports were a lot different to UK students: a wide range of subjects (over 30) ranging from calculus to sports to military tactics to engineering to leadership. Let's just say: I was very friendly, and I sweated a little each night as I took the stacks of cash down to the secure safe.

That was a long time ago. I guess they're now running the country, or at the very least, being groomed for it.

If you're wondering why the UK and the new Chinese Bank are being friends, this has a lot to do with it. [Note - same with Russian children and Public Schools, boy was that one a PITA, Russian kids are unholy terror weapons sometimes]

Take out: Western Countries have embraced students in different ways. Either you kick them out for espionage or you make friends with them. *shrug*

What's provincial is not realizing that 20+ years down the tube relationships can blossom. DC amazes me sometimes - anyone with any sense would know that the UK and EU (and to some degree USA, but they tended to attempt to leverage their MBAs far faster) were doing this for the long game.

As were the Chinese and Russians by sending their children to be educated in the West.

It's quite barbaric how people are ignoring these very much tested (an eon ago it was fostering children and swaps and then morphed into exchanges) ways of bridging gaps.

I'd say the Muslim demographic impact which is a major part of the foreign student issue is more important. If you look at the stats on the population growth of that community along with the birth rate stats of same - scary. The late Libyan Mummar Quadafi (sic?) said they would conquer Europe by birth not war. The let's learn about each other by student exchange has been perverted to let's invade by same is the norm now IMHO. And OK - I'll go there - I like Farage on the whole anti EU pro Brit sovereignty issue.

But in the colonies - we can be a bit colloquial. Sorry that does it for my big words. Ha!

Oh, baby, you can throw big words at me aaaal night.

The ME exchanges tended to go to lower tier Universities (2nd tier 10-40) or to specific London based ones (in Libyan terms, LSE) because the students wanted the nightlife over the education. My provenance wasn't ME based, apart from specific Iraqi children and that little line was nixxed by world events. Because, unlike the Chinese and Russian students, they really weren't into learning much: nor am I into their politics.

You could be mercenary and suggest I backed the winners of the race, but I prefer to see it as noting the humans who wanted to learn, and were actually fun. (However: Asian spirits all taste like piss to me, I can drink it, but boy is it nasty).

Libya. Libya will go down in history as revenge over Statecraft and we'll be sorting out the N. Nigerian region for decades because of it. Shitty, shitty little plan.

/derail. Too many drinks, we're all waiting with baited breath for the Moscow announcement.

Yea - WWIII will probably make student loans moot. BTW - Ireland kicked your ass but I would admit Wales was brutal today.

I support Scotland. It's a cross we bear.

#Regarding ME students - I've never met a more egotistical and stubbornly stupid bunch. Especially regarding women's rights and just basic respect. After punching the Iraqi <redacted> minister's son I couldn't do it. There's a reason they all end up as engineers.

WWIII?

Ha. Sorry, not going to happen. Well, not in the way you think it will.

p.s.

Was this entire exchange false? Work it out. No junks were exchanged during this thread.

I watched the clip - will now have to try and figure that out. Unfortunately - I'm a low level grunt trying to educate myself and that mind fuk is kinda beyond me. But - I love a challenge.

It's all bullshit, mirrors and light-shows. Anything you read online can be shaped, triggered, warped and made into a narrative structure. It might be true, it might be some vampire taking the life story of a popular young hedge fund person who died in a car crash and turning it into a weapon, it might be a PSYOP.

It's all about how your nose twitches. Bullshit, research and trusting your own gut helps.

Since you've been nice:

Ask a single question, the answer you'll get won't be bullshit. If the answer is known, and not above this pay-grade, you'll get a honest-to-Planck length answer. Make it good. Make it sexy. Make it count.

[Edit - an hour later, no response. Either he's dead or passed out. Damn this generation, not even spotting authentic offers, and knowing the correct rites: if a favor is offered freely, you ask, you get and we're bound, and there's no responsibility on our end or theirs, it's not dangerous... how much easier do we have to make this? Seriously, I blame advertizing and all that where nothing is really free. In this case, yes, it was.]

Passed out is so judgmental - went into deep think mode. So my question is : how do you see WWIII playing out? I realize there is an assumption built in but there you go.

Hidden assumptions. And the passed out was at my consciousness, self-depreciating joke.

how do you see WWIII playing out?

Which realm?

Physical, "Cyber", Planck level, Geophysical, Temporal, Spiritual, Dimensional? (And many, many more).

Didn't make it count, oh well.

In answer: I don't see the probabilities of WWIII as has been imagined by a majority of people becoming reality to be that high.

It's already over.

You're still thinking. And feeling. And loving. And autonomous. And brilliant. And shining. And singing.

And the Sun will not set upon your realm, no matter what is said.

You might want to start conserving all the rest of the planet though and stop acting like twats. My fate will be less kind.
