France Set To Ban Skinny Girls In Show Of EU Solidarity

Tyler Durden's picture

Who says the eurozone doesn’t project a united front? Even as misguided analysts on the sell side throw out reckless language like “redenomination risk” and irresponsibly suggest that the EMU is in fact nothing more than a “collection of fixed exchange rates,” evidence abounds that the core and the periphery are most assuredly on the same page. If you need proof, just look at the convergence in EMU member policy as it relates to the weight of runway models. Here’s more from CBC

The link between high fashion, body image and eating disorders on French catwalks may lead to a ban on super-skinny models.

France's government is likely to back a bill being discussed in Paris banning excessively thin fashion models as well as potentially fining the modelling agency or fashion house that hires them and sending their agents to jail, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said on Monday.

Style-conscious France, with its fashion and luxury industries worth tens of billions of dollars, would join Italy, Spain and Israel, which all adopted laws against too-thin models on catwalks or in advertising campaigns in early 2013.?..

And while this seemingly flies in the face of the currency bloc’s wholehearted embrace of austerity, officials are fairly certain this is an important step in the global fight against unhealthy couture advertisements:

Under the proposed legislation, any model who wants to work has to have a body mass index (a type of height to weight ratio) of at least 18 and would be subject to regular weight checks. Health Minister Marisol Touraine says the ban would protect young women who see models as the ideal female form.

It’s important that eurozone governments focus on these types of issues and we now understand not only why Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis felt the need to show his fellow Greeks how much they could be eating at lunch if he weren’t stealing their pensions, but also why it’s critical to ensure that the fine for being skinny is high enough to deter people who were thinking about being thin from actually doing so:

Health Minister Marisol Touraine says the ban would protect young women who see models as the ideal female form. Plus, many models in France are still in their teens.

So, a woman who is 5-foot-7 would have to weigh at least 121 pounds. The normal weight BMI range is around 18.5 to 25.

The law would enforce fines of up to $79,000 US for any breaches, with up to six months in jail for any staff involved, French Socialist Party legislator Olivier Veran, who wrote the amendments, told newspaper Le Parisien.

Finally, the proposed legislation will also put an end to the egregious and rampant practice of encouraging skinniness:

The bill’s amendments also propose penalties for anything made public that could be seen as encouraging extreme thinness.

And although “the union representing fashion agencies” in France apparently opposes the new law, we suspect it could easily pass in certain other areas of the world where there is no food.

meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, having fat children is soon to be illegal. So, fat role models good, fat kids bad. Got it.

The Puerto Rican government is proposing a new law that would label the parents of obese kids as "child abusers."

Now, no one is saying that obesity isn't a problem, especially among kids. Obesity rates have doubled worldwide since 1980. The World Health Organization’s most recent numbers show 39 percent of the adult population is overweight, and 13 percent is obese. In Puerto Rico, that combined number is 66 percent.  As for Puerto Rico's kids: Studies have found their obesity rates to be anywhere from 24 to 30 percent.

So along comes this proposed law: Fat kid = abusive parent. Senator Gilbert Rodriguez Valle introduced the bill that would establish a process of identifying obese children in school ("There's a porker!") and sending social workers to investigate the families. If the social workers see no improvements after a year, the parents could be fined up to $800.

That's right: The government is telling parents they don't know how to feed their own kids. As if shaming and fining is the government's job.

This law ignores the fact that while moms and dads play a big role in their kid’s eating habits, so do a plateful of other factors, including education, friends, social norms, the food that's available, and, of course, genes. There's a cornucopia of forces at work in this complex problem, and no simple solution exists—especially not one handed down by an overreaching government

Sad.

That was some awesome hate on Puerto Ricans (only because they are fat, of course).

Have you ever been to any of these places where people also exceed the 66% overweight rate?

Do you have the same (or even better) vitriol for them?

  • Alabama    68.2%
  • Alaska    66.1%
  • Arkansas 69.9%
  • Indiana    67.3%
  • Iowa    67.0%
  • Kentucky    67.3%
  • Louisiana    67.4%
  • Michigan    66.2%
  • Mississippi    69.3%
  • North Carolina    66.1%
  • North Dakota    67.5%
  • Oklahoma    67.9%
  • South Carolina    66.5%
  • South Dakota    67.0%
  • Tennessee    68.4%
  • Texas    66.1%
  • West Virginia    68.8%
  • Wisconsin    66.5%

How about those that exceed 60% ?

  • Minnesota    61.1%
  • Missouri    65.5%
  • Montana    61.4%
  • Nebraska    65.5%
  • Nevada    64.9%
  • New Hampshire    61.8%
  • New Jersey    62.8%
  • New Mexico    62.7%
  • New York    61.3%
  • Ohio    65.1%
  • Pennsylvania    64.5%
  • Rhode Island    64.6%
  • Vermont    61.9%
  • Virginia    64.0%
  • Washington    61.4%
  • Arizona    61.8%
  • California    60.1%
  • Connecticut    62.5%
  • Delaware    64.6%
  • Florida    62.8%
  • Georgia    65.7%
  • Idaho    64.9%
  • Illinois    64.7%
  • Kansas    65.3%
  • Maine    64.8%
  • Maryland    64.1%
  • Wyoming    64.4%
  • Guam    63.5%

That leaves only five states (and one district). Unfortunately they too have more than half of their population overweight or obese. They are:

  • Massachusetts    58.0%
  • Colorado    56.4%
  • Hawaii    55.4%
  • Oregon    59.9%
  • Utah    59.2%
  • District of Columbia    53.8%

What about parents who provide their 9 year olds with fully featured smartphones and unlimited screen time?

That's abuse. That's fucking the kid for life.

My kids underwent an amazing transformation when we turned it all off.  It took a few days for them to adjust, like a crack addict or something.  1 month later, their creativity has blossomed, they participate in the family more, they are no longer 'depressed' about all the things they don't have (we ain't rich like you fuckers), and just yesterday one of their teachers told me that they had seen a 'transformation' in the last month.

When I told that teacher what had changed at home, he looked at me like I was a child abuser.  How could I possibly deny my children the wonders of facebook, TV, and all the rest?

What the ACTUAL FUCK?

That industry is full of abuse. The models are on the hook for abuse and predation by sexual predators the moment they sign up. I don't see what is so funny about that and why it should not be addressed.

Thu, 03/19/2015 - 03:54 | 5905178 Peterus
Peterus's picture

You can't spell "predation" without "coercion". If she's always free to walk away and the terms agreed upon are followed through, this is not abuse. It's a free choice of quite some models to fuck their way up the career path. If male plumbers also had high sexual value you'd see them more frequently trying to play this card. They don't have this option. While models do, so some of them use it.

Anyway it's generally miserable in professions that people just like for the sake of these professions. You get a surge in avaialble models as a lot of girls would like to be appreciated for their looks. Someone has to be left behind. Same with artist painters, though being valued for your looks is not prerequisite for painter. It is for a model. They all have this extra option and good reasons to use it against massive competition. No wonder a lot of them will use it.

Actually the difference between ideal woman and average woman in USA shifted by quite a margin (don't remember the exact figures) over last few decades. However the average weight shifted by almost the same margin.

Still, super-skinny was never considered ideal, so skeletal giraffe models had to get those gigs for other reasons.

The ex girlfriend is a Ukie and some have the toothpick gene, 5ft10' and 115lbs. She would eat just as much as me,pounding back steaks like a man! Another is my cousin, 5ft6' and 85lbs,she forces herself to eat because people think she's too skinny. There is no amount of food that can make her gain weight. Its in the genes and now these poor girls will get banned for the way God made them?????
