A Scientific Model Of What A Zombie Apocalypse Would Look Like (And Where Not To Hide)

Tyler Durden's picture

The best spots for riding out a zombie apocalypse are sparsely populated areas of Montana and Nevada, which remain untouched even four months, according to a new study by researchers at Cornell University who have developed a statistical model for simulating the spread of a fictional zombie epidemic. As The WSJ reports, with real-life applications to modeling viral outbreaks, Cornell offer dire warnings for those who live in Scranton, PA - with northeastern Pennsylvania as the U.S. location most at risk of being overrun by the undead.

Highly populated areas are a bad bet in general, of course. But Alexander Alemi, a graduate student and one of the authors of the paper, notes that the most susceptible spots change over time.

Seven days after the initial outbreak, lower Manhattan, with the map’s highest population density at 299,616 people, has the highest zombie susceptibility. In fact, the New York City metro area in general is probably best avoided, as are other large cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.

By 28 days out, however, the pattern has shifted, Mr. Alemi says. Instead of individual cities being at the greatest risk, areas located between multiple major cities are most vulnerable. “You start to see interactions between different cities,” he says. While northeastern Pennsylvania, identified in the paper as the country’s most vulnerable region, “doesn’t have a particularly high population itself, it is near all these other high population areas.”

...

Also a bad bet—Bakersfield, Calif., which sits uncomfortably near San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

*  *  *

The spread starts slow and accelerates fast..

Blue - clear; Red - Zombies, Green - wiped out

As you can see, for the parameters we chose, most of the United States population has been turned into zombies by the first week, while the geographic map doesn't necessarily seem all that compelling. In the early stages of the outbreak, while the population is roughly homogeneous, the zombie plague spreads out in roughly uniform circles, where the speed of the infection is tied to the local population density. Infestations on the coasts, with their higher population density, have spread farther than those near the center of the country. After several weeks, the map exhibits stronger anisotropy, as we spread over larger geographical areas and the zombie front is influenced by large inhomogeneities in population density. After four weeks, much of the United States has fallen, but it takes a very long time for the zombies to diffuse and capture the remaining portions of the United States. Even four months in, remote areas of Montana and Nevada remain zombie free.

Another good reason to move?

Since most sane folks know 'zombie invasion' is code for financial collapse and 'financial zombie' hordes seeking food; the models should probably not be strictly biological. I'd incorporate a few 'dollar density' factors over just population density.

In the end we all know that the good go to Boulder and the evil come to (or in my case stay in) Vegas....we're 'always open'.

Forget the "zombies"; people are concerned with riots in the urban areas when it all goes down: Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, ect.. How do you put down the riots and protect the women and kids living there as well as your own family members living outside these areas. Don't think FEMA is going to be of much use. Probably just the opposite.

Being in the sububs is def better than being in the "city"..but it's still not a safe bet.

Those lucy enough to have "MUD CUTTERS" (assault rifles for shooting minorities) will be okay since most of these people are stupid, unorganized and cannot aim.

The real problem is having bands of organized, armed white people raiding other communities and such.

Alot of blood is going to be spilled when/if the EBT card and system collapses.

How to survive:

1) Duct tape

+

2) Old clothes

= Indestructible Duct tape armor that is both light, flexible, bite proof.

The rest is easy, the only time you will die while surviving the zombie apocalypse is when you let your guard down and get bitten. . . proper protective gear is what its all about. . . full helmets . . . light weigh body armor that can not be punctured by teeth .  . . and you have plenty of time to correct for any surprises that would otherwise take you out of the game.

If only a real zombie event would happen. These proxy zombies propagate and thrive due to government cultivation.

I'm in a pretty rural spot, so it's likely that there wouldn't be many real zombies that would make it to where I live. I can't image that hunting them wouldn't turn into a sport in very short order. Guided hunts, a scoring system, etc.

How many authors of bullshit are the Tyler's going to post here huh?

First off, recommending Nevada as a Place to go is the most idiotic thing one could do because 80% of Nevada is government owned.

Second, the map that show the increase of zombies doesn't take into account that most of them would decline within a Few Days because Amurica has enough guns and ammo to wipe out those zomies lickity split.

Come on Tyler's you can do better than this.

Sincerely,

A humble peanut in the gallery.

MsCreant- to a point I'll agree with you but the point of fight club is to be above the curve and promote the good solutions.

For the Tyler's to allow an author to promote such things is akin to ZH pumping gold ETF's and financial debt instruments even though this place is about zero hedging. The debate is supposed to happen in the comment section like it used to be.

Posting stories with sophomoric conclusions without realizing who your audience is says more about the Tyler's than the author.
That's my beef and I'm sticking to it.

This has nothing to do with zombies.

If you actually scan the paper for the acknowledgements section, this was funded by NSF, so yes, our tax dollars were spent on this.

The "zombies' aspect of it was probably a light-hearted attempt to cover up that this is modelling of a bio-weapon and spreading as a function of contagiousness, contagion vectors, weather, transport, social effects, etc.  I am not comforted by the idea that our govt is still actively studying these things, but I am not surprised either.

They've been studying/testing germ dispersal for quite some time, as well as genetic effects of certain applied vaccinations, add in the GMO affects to help compromise the immune system and it shouldn't be too hard to get their protocols in place for The 6th Extinction... all of which comes riding in with the usual cosmic 'dragons' spreading fire, death and destruction along with a nice helping of plague every few years for centuries... they don't them 'dark ages' for nothing, nor do these govt scientists call it the 6th extinction for nothing. 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.... and soon. Perhaps it'd be a nice time for a brown dwarf surprise to act as our black swan surprise? Then once things seem to cool off, just wait for the 'dragons' to do their thing. Extinction level event= ~95% killoff.... and not much is left besides ourselves, our various 'pets' and food sources, so it really won't take too much and given the level of ponerological infiltration on a global scale, it's way too late to fix the game, as the 'game' has already been 'fixed'... against the herd. Sayonara.

This is simply welfare for the PhDs which are going to be "restructured" just as soon as the student loan bubble goes tits up. A lot of worthless curricula will become costly excess baggage such as political science, sociology, (pick one) studies, you get the point. It will die hard because it's a hotbed of Marxism and our tax money will be distributed to the mess as long as they can keep the sheeple dumbed down. Mommy and daddy will want Johnny and Suzie to get their middle-aged asses out of the nest and go to work but Johnny majored in African Studies and Suzie majored in art. No value, so over in the corner of welfare signup with the dropouts from junior high. Voting will be mandatory, though, no matter for whom you vote, they are all the same, anyway. Just put your stamp of approval on this rotten government, so no bitching allowed about the collapse, after all, YOU voted for it. That's their monkey transfer program to the sheared sheep.

Being a conspiracy minded distrustful sort, I wonder what the real purpose of the study is. It probably involves the intentional introduction of lethal microbes in the prime locations and the study is for projected prepositioned war assets in the most likely places of resistance after the initial maximum panic shock has been introduced.

Zombies, my ass. The evil shits are up to no good.

People aren't running Zombie outbreak plans (go find it) because it's a real threat; it's a polite way of training for lethal crowd control in societal breakdown.

Aurora Ex Machina

I'll do this once, and once only.

Life is not as simple as you'd like.

In fact, life is even more chaotic and complex than you or I can imagine, and there are players in the Great Game working long term strategy, players who aren't really even the same species as you anymore in terms of mental frameworks, cases where ideologies haunt shells of actors having totally consumed them, entire legions of silenced minds who cannot believe the swill forced through the central communications.

Your heuristic path is happy with evil Muslims. That's the point of the media; parse heuristic capabilities quickly into an amalgamation that works, and satisfies all of them. From Fox to Alex Jones to the Guardian to the Socialist Worker Party to ZH to all of them. What needs to be co-opted, is. What can be mocked and left, will be. When safety valves need to exist, they will.

Riddle me this: do you really think the majority of ZH readers actually comment, or believe the literal words and so on? If you do, you're not playing properly, and should get the fuck out of dodge. Here's a hint: Paul Krugman takes time on an International Platform to state that he's not actually posting here. Well, derp. I'm guessing he'd not reply the same if someone on Reddit, HN, Biao etc did so.

Oh, and a head's up. "We think the price is worth it". And no, even if I dislike the 1996 Israel clean break plan or the Neo-Con New American Century, I don't make the mistake of thinking they exist in a vacuum. All the Great Game players have these plans. There's no single conspiracy, there's a multitude of massively talented individuals with differing ideologies with massive resources all in a tiny pot, all seemingly unable to meld.

Plans within Plans.

The major issue at the moment is that last time the Game was changed, a lot of the different modal thinkers were terminated with extreme prejudice (and, unsurprisingly, mostly female). [And at this point, you won't be even following this, it's for viewers]. Newsflash: when fish go, things will get messy. People aren't running Zombie outbreak plans (go find it) because it's a real threat; it's a polite way of training for lethal crowd control in societal breakdown.

For the record; Abrahamic Religions all have the same ideological root. So you're all basically killing each other over the same set of principles, just slaughtering over your interpretations of the same fucking idea. But hey, sure, let's bring it all down to the lowest common denominator and revel in it, no? Same goes for Hindus / Buddists or whereever someone is perverting the 'God Mode' part of their brain for violence.

God is not Good.

As for those wanting a second coming, you probably don't. Both sides are unfit, and the next stage contains neither side, if we're playing dualism. Which is probably why both sides of this coin aren't interested in actually moving the Great Game forward.

/rant over, go back to sleep.

Actually, the real Krugman was on here for a day. If I remember it correctly, he got his ass kicked and ran away crying like a schoolgirl.

First off, you have to come to understand that Zombie Apocalypse is a metaphor for social collapse.  Once you wrap your mind around that, you begin to understand why the DOD has CONPLAN 8888.

These maps are probably not bad estimates of the spread of a pandemic of any sort.

I wonder how this is going over with the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. They are probably fretting that it will crater the tourism industry there...

Everyone knows these public university studies about the zombie apocalypse are just another way of generating content for corporations without the masses picking up on it. Of those who do get it, pretty much everybody gets the concept of surviving longer than the other "zombie", looking for the same resources, food, and friends. What people don't get is the other side. The darker side. Being infected represents a total change in mind set, a total shift in game theory from prey to predator. However, I think Paul Craig Roberts has it more right though. And I'd personally like to stick it in the craw of all you "Orwell" afficiandos who go commando over the internet. Fuck you and your ghost.

You don't have to be overrun by the zombies to end up dead. Once the zombies take out the power plant that provides you with electricity, you're pretty much history. See James Burke's TV show "Connections." Season one, episode one.

Yes, yes, it makes absolutely perfectly sense for a university to create models on a zombie outbreak. It is exactly this kind of research that shows the academic brilliance in the US. And, as an added bonus ZH gets something really important to write about.
