300 US Paratroopers Arrive In Ukraine After Russia Says Its Missiles Will Target NATO Member States

Tyler Durden's picture

While the escalation of the second Cold War between Russia and the US over their proxy conflict in Ukraine has been relegated to the back pages due to the lack of any flash points in recent months, events in eastern Europe continue to build up to an increasingly unstable equilibrium. Just yesterday, Russia again accused the United States of "seeking political and military dominance and sought to put blame on the West for international security crises, including the conflict in east Ukraine."

It didn't stop there. According to the WSJ, Russia’s top general warned European countries planning to host installations for a U.S.-led missile-defense shield that Russian forces would be forced to target them.

“Nonnuclear powers where missile-defense installations are being installed have become the objects of priority response,” Gen. Valery Gerasimov said, referring to Poland and Romania.

It was unclear if Russia would use conventional weapons or tactical short-range nuclear missiles for deterrence purposes.

The comments came at a defense conference in Moscow where a series of high-level Russian leaders repeatedly warned of perceived threats that the U.S. and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization posed to modern Russia.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, according to Reuters, that a drive by the United States and its allies to bring Kiev closer to the West was a threat to Moscow and had forced it to react.

"The United States and its allies have crossed all possible lines in their drive to bring Kiev into their orbit. That could not have failed to trigger our reaction," he told an annual security conference in Moscow.

General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, reiterated Russia's warning: "Considering themselves the winners of the Cold War, the United States decided to reshape the world to fit its needs."

"Aiming at complete dominance, Washington stopped taking into account the interests of other countries and respect international law."

When asked about the annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Shoigu "blamed the violence on Kiev and sought to dismiss Western criticism that Russia was forcibly remaking European borders, pointing in turn to Western military involvement in Serbia, Iraq and Libya."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the conference attended by envoys from China, Iran, Pakistan and some of Russia's regional allies, that Kiev had to deliver on its obligations under peace agreements reached in Minsk to "safeguard unity of the Ukrainian state".

The problem is that at this point it doesn't matter who started what, where and how: just like the Intifada, or any other regional, thousand year-old conflict in Europe or any other part of the world, all that remains are the escalating steps, and how long until one of the two adversaries snaps and engages in an action from which there is no return.

Yet despite Russia's very clear threat that its missiles are now armed at two more NATO countries, and numerous previous warnings that the official dispatch of US troops in Ukraine, besides the countless ones who are there on a mercenary basis, will lead to a flash point in the second Cold War, earlier today 300 hundred US paratroopers arrived in Ukraine - a non-NATO country - to "train its forces fighting pro-Russian rebels" according to the US army website.

As AFP notes, the move could "destabilize" the war-torn ex-Soviet country, which clearly is the intention. Because as we have warned on numerous occasions, the entire world is now headed into an event horizon in which the neo-cons have bet that only regional (or not so regional) war can be the economic stimulus that pushes the world out of its global depressed funk. Just like the first Great Depression.

According to AFP, the troops from the 173rd Airborne Brigade arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday in Yavoriv, western Ukraine, to spend six months training three battalions of Ukrainian troops, the army said in a statement.

"We will have about 300 soldiers from the brigade on the ground providing the training that will last over the next six months," said US army spokesman Donald Wrenn.

Moscow was obviously displeased: "The participation of instructors and experts from third countries on Ukrainian territory ... of course, does not help to resolve the conflict," president Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Pekov said, quoted by Russian news agencies.

"On the contrary, it can seriously destabilise the situation."

Just as Russian troops training Mexican Federales would be sternly frowned upon by the Obama administration.

But that's doesn't matter: what matters is that US troops will now train the National Guard of Ukraine, a reservist force that was reformed in 2014 to bring volunteers and militia under government control. They will do so literally within meters of the Russian border.

"We will be conducting classes on war-fighting functions, as well as training to sustain and increase the professionalism and proficiency of military staffs," Major Jose Mendez, operations officer for the brigade, was quoted as saying on the US army website.

Ukraine had asked the United States to send the training mission, dubbed Operation Fearless Guardian, according to an article published by the US army on April 11.

This is what paratroopers, from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, arriving at Lviv International Airport on April 11, 2015 look like courtesy of the US Army's website:

According to the US Army the brigade, as the Army Contingency Response Force in Europe, is conducting continuous operations in six different countries.

"This is the new norm for the 173rd," Mendez said. "The 173rd is in a special position, as the only forwardly-positioned airborne brigade in Europe, we have the ability to be anywhere in the U.S. European Command area of responsibility in 18 hours or less."

The brigade has trained with Ukrainian forces in international exercises throughout Europe, as well as within Ukraine, most recently last September in the Rapid Trident series of exercises, an annual U.S. Army Europe-led exercise designed to promote regional stability and security. The two forces are scheduled to participate in Exercise Rapid Trident 2015 later this year.

More:

Paratroopers, from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, arrive at Lviv International Airport in Lviv, Ukraine, April 11, 2015, in support of Fearless Guardian, a program to train Ukrainian national guard troops.

A ground convoy drove all the way from the brigade's base in northern Italy to the Ukrainian military zone in Yavoriv near the Polish border, with vehicles and equipment.

The US and Ukrainian armies stressed the equipment was for use by the US brigade in the training and is not to be issued to Ukrainian forces. Fifty paratroopers travelled with that 25-vehicle convoy, which arrived on April 10, while further troops arrived on April 14 and 15, the US army website said.

Ukraine's defence ministry said in a statement that the training would begin with a ceremony on April 20.

What happens after will likely assure the second consecutive very "volatile" summer. The good news for economists whose GDP predictions will be dead wrong once more, is that they will have yet another aspect of that thing called "reality" to blame it on.

" I don't want to believe that you meant it."

You don't want to believe it because you've got your head up your ass like so many others. Another with the iincurable infection called DENIAL DISORDER. You, like so many other dumb down Americans, believe WE are the GOOD guys, and THEY are the bad guys. We spead our vile, hideous form of "freedom and democracy" across the globe, ad nauseam, and these robot troops feed on killing, in the name of making money and expanding control for the bankers, and you have the audacity to call them "Brave"? That's fucking bullshit, and it's people like you (either dumbed down or a Zionist shill troll) who are just as fucked up as the bankers and troops who are addicted to destroying all living creatures, for personal gain. It just keeps going on and on and on and you keep buying in to the insanity. We don't need to be there. We don't need to be anywhere, killing and maiming (without malice) innocent men, women and children.

But wait, that's not the end. Wait till these "brave" warriors, strung out on anger, steroids, Rx drugs, and their toys, come home to roost in your neighborhood, soon enough. What will you be saying when same "paratroopers" land on you tonight, rape you, your wife, your children and pets, and fillet all of you, while your all still alive, singing campfire songs, when WAR comes to America? We are on a trajectory for that to happen within a very short time. I can see you contorted face now, gnashing your teeth. It's going to get nasty out there, downright medieval.

Even a very modest, localised disruption to the EBT system caused near-rioting (and actual rioting in a few select locations); can you imagine the consequences of a more prolonged, more widespread outage??

There is a VERY delicate balance running in the USA; "gotta keep the masses placated" still works, but as the entitlement largesse is seen to grow, the entitlement expectations amongst certain classes increase (the "career unemployable" are just one such group).

I would be very surprised if the Russian Military / Intelligence services are not very aware of this (and other) systemic weaknesses, and quite possibly have plans, (and people) in place in order to indulge in such asymmetric warfare should things become more interesting.

.

I don't know what you were thinking

Maybe I can help with some clarification.

Even though this would be for a bad war against the wrong enemy for the wrong reasons,

Even though this would be, as was determined at Nuremberg, a(nother) war crime of the gravest severity, against an opponent which never wanted to be an enemy, for the sole purpose of monetizing human suffering and death,

the emotions should range from pride and respect for their bravery,

the emotions should range from disgust and shame of their obedient eagerness to murder anyone arbitrarily labeled 'enemy' (and nausea and revulsion at their enjoyment in doing so),

regret for their sacrifice,

remorse for those whose lives are taken by these brutish and cowardly goon squads as sacrifices on the altar of psychopathic megalomania,

and anger at those who wasted their lives in pursuit of our leaders' desires to punish the Russians for merely being who they are: proud of their heritage and defiant as ever of the West.

and admiration for the honor and courage of those who choose the path of disobedience and/or desertion instead of murder for fun and profit.

when you wrote that you wished that their parachutes would not deploy, the consequence of which would be their certain deaths. I don't want to believe that you meant it.

I gave him a +1 because I believe that he did mean it. The best possible outcome (for Americans, Russians, and Ukrainians) of any conflict arising from this clown show is for these "defenders of truth, justice, and the american way" to meet a quick death, preferably before they've had the chance to harm anyone other than themselves.

I hope I've helped to clear things up a little.

The march to war continues. This is not a game, this is the real thing. Russians are gearing themselves for a war against NATO that many feel is now all but baked into the cake. US Soldiers in Ukraine, that means war to Russia, it really does. Obama does not need Ukraine, he only needs it if he plans a war on Russia. So he has sent in the troops, there is no other way around it, Russia is getting ready for an all out defense of their borders, and Eastern Ukraine.

If Putin has intended to defend EUke he has been incompetent.  Did he think it would not come to this if he kept backing up?  The US and NATO were their before now but it was more low key.  This is publicity to get media momentum for more heavy weapons.  Why did Putin not move into EUke at the same time if he ultimately intends to defend EUke.  He has to do so eventually, or plan massive missile and air attacks that also hit US/NATO troops.

But, Russia's borders will not be physically crossed by US/NATO but would be by WUke hit and run groups and terrorism.

Obama's controllers need EUke if they plan to take Crimea back.  Once their troops are at Crimea's borders it is cut off in some ways, such as water I believe.  And covert actions are easily staged.  Perhaps the naval base is damaged by covert action at that time.

Obama's controllers need EUke to plunder the resources for profit and to take farm land and maybe to eventually establish a jewish colony after the locals are killed by radical WUke troops.  And maybe Putin is playing along with making that happen, maybe that is why he forced the cease fires on the EUke's.

I agree Jack Burton. The USSA is marching into another war, so in part they can blame the Russians for the inevitable FED Reserve Ponzi Collapse.  The US troops will be sacrificed to create the conditions for a general mobilization, a new 9/11 to herd the sheeple.   This will not end well.

The real question is if the EU will go along with this game, or will finally say NO to the USSA.

All EU leaders are hand picked Washington stooges. Either paid, threatened, hand picked traitors, or simple stupid. EU leadership answers to Washington DC. EU people are divided. Those who watch media, tend to want war with Russia. Those who are smart or get new from alternative media, they want peace. Trouble is, too many EU people watch media, which is US owned, directly or indirectly.

Obama planning a war with Russia, I am sorry but that is absurd.

300 not-so-enthused troops sent by the (supposed) leader of NATO is not exactly throwing down the gauntlet.  Vlad probably welcomes this development, because it plays into his MO of never letting a crisis, fabricated or otherwise, go to waste.  This gives him more room to move . . .what is U.S.-led NATO going to do?  Attack?  Really?

Obama's moves internationally (or lack thereof, re: Red Lines) highlight his shallow intellect.  He has read and re-read Rules For Radicals, without ever considering if has been translated into Russian.  Russia has the will and capability; NATO only has capability.  The real problem is Russia is now keenly aware of NATO's lack of will to act.

Barack Hussein Obama has never gotten into so much as a playground scuffle.  Talky-talky-talky, and eventually it's off the front page.

But don't worry.  Hillary has plenty of experience with Russia.

unusually misleading headline for ZH. NY times-ish really.

So you have MAD and a status quo that could have bene preserved after 1991. Instead, the "Grand chessboard" aggressive-militarist line of thinking gets in the drivers seat, and accelerates under both clinton's 'kosher kitchen' and especially Bush 2.0's ZionistOccupation Administration.

Fair enough - so as NATO keeps expanding, part of it is countries putting in "defensive" missile systems [remember if you aren't Iran or Russia or Syria - you are allowed to have defensive systems]...

which have ZERO other purpose but to denigrate Russian deterrents, and offensive and therefore defensive capability.

So - Russia says - hey, if you put in shit designed to render our systems less effective, that shit is a fair target.

300 paratroopers?? how ridiculous....meanwhile Novorussia now already has its own large well-trained army. If Kiev attacks, Kiev will just loose more territory, because rebels are waiting for that. I already said that, unless they send a huge amount of NATO soldiers - tens of thousands, they wont achieve anything. So relax. But once you hear they are sending those tens of thousands NATO soldiers (if neocons get desperate enough), then you know the real hell starts. I somehow have a feeling that Obama wont send them and we will have to wait for the next USA president, who will be chosen for that specific purpose. If something does not happen till then, some kind of a miracle.

Putin should do the same and heavily arm Eastern Ukraine, then they can blame Russia for violating Minsk agreement.. nice trick USA..

One of the conditions in the Minsk II agreem3nt was that the Ukraine regime should start the political process of federalisation. Their response has been to ban Russian language and to remove Russian language names for towns, cities etc. Minsk II was dead the day it was signed as Ukraine had no intent to allow for a federalised state.

Monetas, imagine Hitler in his bunker,  moving  imaginary armies while screaming in his bunker that he was really winning, that everyone was falling for Russian lies.

You remind me of him, of a delusional insipid nothing and nobody, out of touch with reality.  There is NO scenario where Russia loses a conventional war to the USSA because they have much shorter supply lines, have a superior land based military, and are facing a direct threat to the homeland.   USSA air power means shit against S400 and 500's, and the navy would be a sitting duck in the black sea or the baltics.

Realistically, the USSA is willing to fight to the last Ukrainian, and I honestly wonder why you cannot see this.

The Neocon/Zionist goal is to destablize and take out Russia.  Period.  And that effort requires paid trolls.  Lots of them.  And the Rothchilds and other private central bankers have plenty of cash on hand to spend on these and various other undemocratic and evil projects.  End private central banking.  It puts too much money and power (trillions) in the hands of way to few. Of course bad shit is going to happen.  All power must be decentralized and democratized.  The evil doer's goal is just the opposite.

The US Elite prefer this sort of warfare, where all the nitty gritty occurs at a safe distance. Some (not all) of the US "general population" like this sort of warfare too - the wars they can watch on their 88 inch flat-screen t.v. s, and once theyve had their fill, they can conveniently change channels to whatever they prefer - without even needing to leave their couch!

They'll activate their 5th column of professional dissidents, human rights activists, soldiers mothers and a whole shitstorm of folks who they've patiently financed, coddled and nurtured for years for the sole purpose of staging demonstrations in Russia and destabilizing it.

If it goes well, they'll also have a new 9/11, Monsanto get's paid back, Joe Jr and the MIC make money, Israel, Franklin Templeton get something in the bargain. And Europeans will feel save in the bosom of Hillary. Pretty ain't it?

The only shooting war I see in the future is in Donbas, Ukraine, where the so-called Minsk ceasefire is tentative at best.

Will Poroshenko's Western military advisors move the newly trained Ukrainian divisions to the ceasefire line?

Will Putin consider the training and positioning of those troops a contravention of the Minsk Agreement?

If so, what what will that violation allow Russia to do in arming and assisting the separatists?  Will Putin act?

None of us can know the answers to these questions.

The alternative to that scenario is a nuclear first strike by either one of the two players.  Both have a rationale.

Ballistic missiles are most vulnerable while they are in launch phase. They are in vertical climb, with predictable course; and the multiple warheads within have not separated from the missile. the positioning of ABMs in the Baltic States and Poland will enable the USA to attack many of the missiles that Russia could launch while they are in this vertical climb phase.

If the USA was genuinely interested in intercepting potential Iranian missiles, aimed at Europe or the United States, these ABMs would be set up in Afghanistan or Turkey.

The anti-missile system being implemented by the US in Europe is regarded as 'offensive' by the Russians because it can be used for dual purposes - one, as a proper missile fence system, and two, it can also be used to launch nuclear armed cruise missiles.  The S-300 can only be used for defensive anti-missile purposes; thus, is considered by the Russians to be only 'defensive' in nature.

US warmongers - get the fuck out of Europe !

Germany's Ramstein airbase 'heart' of US drone program

The Ramstein airbase in Germany has been serving as the center of the US' drone strikes in Africa and the Middle East, according to reports by Der Spiegel and The Intercept. The German government is aware of the program.

The Ramstein airbase, in Germany's southwestern Rhineland Palatinate state, was being used as a "tell-tale" heart for US drone strikes in Africa and the Middle East, Der Spiegel and The Intercept reported on Saturday.

The news organizations, which reported the story after receiving information from an anonymous source, said that the German government was aware of Washington's intentions.

According to the news articles, the US administration regularly sent out drones to hit targets suspected of terrorism. These targets were situated in Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"Signals are transmitted from Ramstein, which tell the drones what they should do," Der Spiegel reported a US official as saying, on condition of anonymity. The magazine also referred to documents which could put the German government under pressure, especially since Berlin had always argued that it had "no confirmed knowledge" on the central role of Ramstein in the controversial drone attacks by the US.

Berlin shirks responsibility

These documents suggested that the US Department of the Army informed the German Ministry of Defense that it was installing a relay station for drones in Ramstein in November 2011. There was no consensus among German officials on how they should react to this information. An internal note even suggested that the "Chancellor's office and the Defense Ministry were planning to wait out the pressure from the parliament and the general public."

News about Ramstein being used as a coordination hub for US drone attacks began pouring in nearly two years ago. In 2014, German media reported that the airbase was receiving live pictures of the drone attacks, which were analyzed and compared with information from intelligence agencies.

US President Barack Obama, however, addressed the issue in Berlin in 2013, saying, "We do not use Germany as a launching point for unmanned drones… as part of our counterterrorism activities."

Unmanned drone aircraft have been part of the US' military arsenal for many years. The planes have been used extensively in areas believed to be serving as hideouts for terrorists, but have resulted in the death of thousands of civilians.
