Caught On Tape: Dramatic Video & Images From The Mount Everest Avalanche

Tyler Durden's picture

In the immediate aftermath of yesterday's destructive Nepal earthquake, which has led to hundreds of aftershocks and a constantly rising death toll, currently exceeding 2000, the most visually stunning, if quite deadly, phenomenon was a massive avalanche on Mt. Everest and leading to at least 17 casualties, including a Google executive, and 61 injured.

According to Xinhua, the avalanche began Saturday on Mount Kumori, a 7,000-meter-high mountain just a few miles from Mount Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, gathering strength as it headed toward the base camp where climbing expeditions have been preparing to make their summit attempts in the coming weeks, he said. Numerous climbers may now be cut off on routes leading to the top of the world's highest peak.

The avalanche plowed into a part of base camp, a sprawling seasonal village of climbers, guides and porters, flattening at least 30 tents, Tshering said. All of the dead and injured were at base camp.

For a sense of the base camp's location relative to the rest of the world's tallest mountain refer to the image below, taken from a May 2014 WSJ story discussing the "dangerous business" of Everest, when 16 sherpas died in what was previously the deadliest disaster in the mountain's history.

Survivors reached over Internet messaging services described a scene of terror as the snow and ice roared through the nearby Khumbu Icefall and into the camp.

The nationalities of base camp victims were unclear as climbers described chaotic attempts to treat the injured amid fears of more landslides and aftershocks that continue to rattle the region. Chinese media "West China City Daily" reported that a Chinese climber and two Sherpa guides were among the dead.

Dan Fredinburg, a Google executive who described himself as an adventurer, was among the dead, Google confirmed. Lawrence You, the company's director of privacy, posted online that Fredinburg was with three other Google employees hiking Mount Qomolangma. Fredinburg served as product manager and the head of privacy at Google X.

Weather.com has further details:

The avalanche — or perhaps a series of avalanches hidden in a massive white cloud — plowed into a part of base camp, a sprawling seasonal village of climbers, guides and porters, flattening at least 30 tents, Tshering said. All of the dead and injured were at base camp.

Survivors reached over Internet messaging services described a scene of terror as the snow and ice roared through the nearby Khumbu Icefall and into the camp.

Azim Afif, the 27-year-old leader of a climbing team from University of Technology Malaysia, said in an interview on the service WhatsApp that his group was in a meal tent waiting for lunch when suddenly the table and everything around them began shaking.

When they ran outside, they saw "a wall of ice coming towards us," and heard the cries of Sherpa guides shouting for people to run for their lives, he wrote. "We just think to find a place to hide and save our life."

The small team planned to sleep together Saturday night in one large tent "to make sure if anything happen, we are together," Afif said. Quickly, though, climbing teams scattered across the camp and began to work together to search for survivors.

Gordon Janow, the director of programs for the Washington-based guiding outfit Alpine Ascents International, said from Seattle that his team had come through the avalanche unscathed. Their first goal was to deal with the devastation at base camp, he said, and they would then try to create new routes to help climbers stuck above the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. The icefall, which is just above base camp, is a key route up the lower part of Everest.

"Everybody's pretty much in rescue mode, but this is different from some independent climbing accident where people can be rescued and taken somewhere else," Janow said. "I don't know where somewhere else is."

Follow some truly epic photos as the avalanche was headed toward base camp...

... as well as a whole series of photos taken by AFP's Roberto Schmidt who was at base camp on Everest when the avalanche hit, courtesy of Telegraph:

Pictures taken by AFP's South Asia photo chief Roberto Schmidt show an enormous cloud of snow and debris cascading down the mountain as survivors recalled the horrifying moment that disaster struck on Saturday.

"I ran and it just flattened me. I tried to get up and it flattened me again," Singapore-based marine biologist George Foulsham told AFP at base camp. "I couldn't breathe, I thought I was dead. When I finally stood up, I couldn't believe it passed me over and I was almost untouched."

A spokesman for Nepal's tourism department, which issues the permits to climb the world's tallest mountain, said the death toll had risen to 17 and could increase further. "Seventeen have been reported dead so far and 61 are injured," said Tulsi Gautam. "Those who are able are walking down. Others are being airlifted to Pheriche." Here, rescuers use a makeshift stretcher to carry an injured person after an avalanche triggered by an earthquake flattened parts of Everest Base Camp.

Sherpas get the raw end of this deal. There will be a few more orphaned Sherpa kids after this. Honestly, if people had to carry their own food and gear up to the base camps and then carry their shit down the mountain no one would climb Everest. That said, this mountain is fairly important for Nepal revenue and the Sherpas. There are second and third generation sherpas there.

So listening to predictive bots geologic reports and remembering previous ones and thinking now that the pacific is nuclearized with melting starfish to say the least along with the hot spot. So that ring of fire sea has to start acting different now that it's nuclearized as its nuclear water now which has different properties than it had before as an unnuclearized ocean. Nuclear water is heavy. As we see with what I stumbled upon with that nuclearized aquifer in the desert which became nuclearized from nuclear missiles and is now heavy water which is a nuclear aquifer on the move like a slow motion horror movie tragedy towards Las Vegas.
The Pacific Ocean easily spills into other oceans some faster than others. The Indian Ocean which to is very geologically active as are all oceans but more felt upon land than say most not all of the Atlantic. The predictive bot predicts many new islands which we r seeing but it had predicted that hot spot... Wasn't sure what to call it when predicted but it was a spot in the pacific twit would appear and be different than rest... Wasn't sure if it would be fresh water or not.... Now I'm sure that word of fresh water might have a different meaning with talking about nuclearized water. But a large new island is likely to pop up in association with this hot spot.

So if the water is like all heavy now I watch the ring of fire with heavy water all sloshing around on that ring of fire.... And thing no wonder it is so active recently.....
This is all while bot again says the Peugeot sound will have a tidal wave dispersed unevenly because of topography more like a splashing bath tub.. Then mt Reiner was brought up as a maybe getting active not sure....
See that's all connected to the ring of fire and with heavy water the geologic process might be put into hyperdrive.
Would preview for errors... Got to get back to predictive bot reports. Trying to slow down typing so as to have less freak outs and errors in sentences.

Sun, 04/26/2015 - 12:56 | 6031449 Weaponized Innocense
Weaponized Innocense's picture

(have to get off mind)
U know when I said Atlantic volcanic activity isn't seen on all shorse. I was talking through human minds eye time perspective as of now.
Which is so not true as its activity is seen on shores... It just a slow mooing thing that happens slowly and at great distances u might not always relate back to it... Like the Rocky Mountains or the Appalachians mountain ridge or Arkansas ..... Etc how it meets the other stuff past the Rockies ... Affected by the ring of fire...

Sun, 04/26/2015 - 13:02 | 6031460 Weaponized Innocense
Weaponized Innocense's picture

See once again the bot keeps talking about fresh water up flows from the ocean floors over ther in the pacific region perhaps Indian....
Now if the ocean water has become nuclesrized it would become so heavy as to make the clean floor so heavy as to sink and squish out the underwater aquifer lakes etc... ... Heading for the core heading for the core!

In the background some animal I'm thinking dog starts making these almost bird like chirps about it .... Like it agrees and is so into what clif is talking about...
That's so cute... Hahaha.. U would think it was a chicken.. But I think it's his big dog ... Sometimes u can here it drink... And stuff... One day it barked at a bear.

Sun, 04/26/2015 - 13:45 | 6031538 Weaponized Innocense
Weaponized Innocense's picture

So all this chat via the predictive bot is via the "weddings interrupted meme" in which cliff likes to likes to scale across....
Previously the bot has said nuclear issues in many forms ... Now myself I am beginning to pick up between the lines of words not even clif has yet caught that I understand in my education. As to why last report or so he talked about odd new types of radiation issues unseen before in plants etc.
If the pacific is nuclearized which is a very large mass of earth when u start doing the antics now and Indian at least to this point I'm sure the Atlantic too by now... Not totally yet like others pacific mainly but....
Anyway to my point. (Since love the field of magnetic and other shit)
Now we r talking large areas and sun explosions and reactions via sun and nuclear earth.

Like big red on side or afterwards or next day to counteract alcohol for me some how ... Long topic there
Why I started in the tequila is a saw a baby cockroach and I never have had roaches here all these decades living here... And I should have filled my giant water glass first then sprayed but I did it in reverse fucked me up in having to try not to breath oh shit did once puke Luke gag gag gonna through up cough cough fucking poison (communication w dog) blah fucking poison... Need some tequila to get this taste out of mouth....

Then thought that's cool haven had hard liquor in a while but yet I need some so I can still drink... I'm a wus when I don't drink as I can't without getting sick)
Just because I have a drink early doesn't mean I have to keep going...
Not uncommon for me to not finish a beer I grabbed to go with my lunch chili and not finish it.
Sometimes it just makes me thirsty and I want a big red instead. I'm good I out the beer back in refrigerator as I was wasting too much and did research on keeping undrank beer.

If you have ever slept with a young woman, then you would know that there are things much more worth a man's time and efforts than climbing a mountain that thousands have already climbed, where ropes are nearly permanent up the slopes, and you have to wait in line to climb, where traffic jams occur on the slopes. Where base camp is indeed surrounded by forzen turds , piss, garbage, and the odd body.

I know rich men get their rocks off doing this, but since so many thousands have done it, whats the thing?

I totally agree. I much rather bang some hotty thigh gap action, anyday, than fucking climb a mountain! Luckily I married one twelves years younger ;) :- so I get to tap when I please.

I learned the hard way on my first wife. I thank the almighty the first wife asked for a divorce. Granted! The ex-wife married a beaner and had 3 brown little grease stains in 3 years so I hear. Glad it ain't me buddy.

I'll be fifty soon. I met my 2nd, and current, wife when see was 28 years old, fresh out of grad school with a Phd, no debt, and a job as a university professor. I even helped her get her learners permit and taught her how to drive. Now she has tenure and we have travelled all over four continents. She is at yoga class right now and she looks eternally 23. She took up yoga after I met her and she just gets tighter. Once you tap Asian, you'll never settle for Caucasian!

Climbing mountains is for fags! I prefer to drive up the mountain in my 4-runner, tear up the crush and run roads with a 12-pack and a bottle of Jack. I did take molly and go spelunking with friends long ago but, since I got away with it without a scratch I won't tempt fate another time. 8 hours in the bowels of a mountain tripping ours nads off! A very spiritual.

38.213858, -79.582234

My other activities always include the hotties. Driving on the beach and setting raging fires after dark is another favorite activity. I associate with a few pyromaniacs and we all meet at the beach on occasion. There are still a few places on our, East, coast were you can do that sort of thing! Used to be wide open but, again, the feds have been eroding our freedoms with respect to these activities over the last decade.

My advice to the young man who likes tight young pussy is to study nursing. You will be surrounded all day with eligible, young women in a lucrative field of endeavor. If I could do it over that would be my plan.

jack normally you piss me off with your antisemetic bullshit but on this one i'm in total agreemetn with you.

the allure of mountaineering drops dramatically when you are not making a first ascent as an explorer. for the most part, but not entirely, it becomes an exercise in masturbatory physical accomplishment.

the original mountaineers were mental champions. people who scale mount everest today are looking for a nikolodean physical challenge. you can get as much of a physical challenge walking around your local forest if you really want it, and it's a whole lot less needlessly dangerous.

My sincere condolences to all those poor dead and injured people and their loved ones.

Adventure is where you find it. And someplace where you can get killed by massive quantities of speeding ice and snow is not it.

Neither is jumping out of an airplane unless you really have to.

I understand the draw to climb a mountain, "because it's there", even though I've never stood on top of anything higher than Popocatépetl. Que Magnifico! Looking over the "Comments", I see mostly the stupid babbling of a bunch of children who have never accomplished Anything in their pathetic little lives except 'Facebooking' from the safety of their mami's couch...

This one made me nauseous! How Repugnant! This little kid does not seem to understand that this was a Terrible Tragedy, taking mostly the lives of Sherpa Porters. They work hard in Dangerous conditions to support their families! This is a Greedy Punk with No Respect for Human Life! So many other postings spouting off more ignorance... "Sings of our time.", "Mossad planted a nuke...", "waiting for Yellowstone Caldera to blow.", Our Sun is powering down...", "Vanity and stupidity in roughly equal parts.", "god's way of telling Google...", "Atlantic volcanic activity isn't seen...", They had to make it look like a natural event...", "pacific is nuclearized with melting starfish...", "slept with a young woman… things much more worth a man's time...", etc. Well, there are even women climbers, pendejo!

The Geological Forces that Created the Earth as we know it caused this! Google "Plate Tectonics" if you cannot wrap your tiny little heads around that! A 7.9 magnitude Earthquake would be expected to cause avalanches throughout this entire mountainous region... Geological Forces Deep within the Earth's Crust do not discern Who happens to be on the slopes of the Currently "Highest Mountain on the Planet"... Show some Respect! Idiots!

Christ on a bike ... never heard so much senseless ignoble bitching.  Takes money and balls to train, get over there, make the plan hire the team and do it.  It's a man's choice for Christ sake.  I gather 95% of the comments here are coming from Amerikan men who lack the resources and inner strength to make that kind of effort; while seated safely on their fat asses in front of the screen.  Eh, test of manhood?  ANYone got a clue what that may have meant in some bygone era?  Rant off.

When it's your community destroyed by calamity, your friends and family being pulled from the rubble, your means of livelihood gone...

maybe then you'll have more sympathy for suffering humanity. The big story here is not mountain climbing, or Google, or rich guys getting some so-called justice just because they have more than you or me.

Thousands of people just had their lives shattered in an instant. Same could happen to you or me. A prayer, a moment of silence, or just a sympathetic thought would be far better responses than many comments here.

I believe that empathy is a mark of emotional maturity. I wish there was a great deal more of it in the world.

All of you should be ashamed of yourselves, but you are not because you are as blind to the truth of your fallen conditions.  Read the comments!  Which one of you has not tried something very challenging because it was a passion?  The hatred you believe they would have for all of you; you prove yourselfs to be the ones filled and over-running with hate.  You wonder what is wrong with the human race; a total lack of moral character and compassion for others.  May God help us to see and quit being so critical and start loving; we are not each others enemies are we?  Any of you parents?  So are some of them?  Any of those children going to miss their parents and have their lives changed forever?  Lord have mercy on us; look what we are and have become; how sin reveals itself in the human DNA like our faces in a mirror.

Precisely why I don't climb mountains.  Seriously, if I get a thrill out of jumping into a pit of poisonous snakes, and once get bit and die, I won't expect you to feel sorry for me.

We hear the same story every spring of everyone that gets on the news because their house is flooded.  The house they built 50 feet from a river that floods every single fucking year.  'Please send us money to rebuild'  What a terrible trajedy.  How much money have we given to countries that get flooded.  You live a 100 feet away from a fucking ocean, and you're shocked when a storm comes, and can't possibly figure out how this happened.  You want to climb mountains, live in a tropical paradise, reap what you fucking sow.

I had a big fantasy climbing Everst before but now I rly don't see the point, all you need to do get to 10km above ground is to hop a plane, there's not much prestige to be gained too, as many old farts are climbing it every year, and if you dont die you just get frostbite and embolisms not much gratification at the end either oh and it costs upward of 50 grand, thanks but no thanks.
