Speaking in Camden, New Jersey, President Obama just uttered the following Detroit-esque words of doom:

We discussed Camden in 2012, 2013, and 2014... and had a different opinion.
All over America, formerly prosperous communities are being transformed into crime-infested wastelands of poverty and despair. Of course the most famous example of this is Detroit. At one time, Detroit was the greatest manufacturing city that the world had ever seen and it had the highest per capita income in the entire country. But now it has become a rotting, decaying hellhole that the rest of the planet laughs at. And of course Detroit is far from alone. There are hundreds of other U.S. cities that are suffering a similar fate. In this article, the focus is going to be on Camden, New Jersey, but the truth is that there are lots of other "Detroits" and "Camdens" all over the nation. Jobs and businesses are leaving our cities at a staggering rate, and what is being left behind is poverty, crime and extreme desperation.
Earlier this month, Rolling Stone published an article that took a hard look at the nightmare conditions that exist in Camden. A city that once made Campbell's soup and some of this nation's most famous warships is now a national disgrace. The following are six of the best quotes out of that article...
-"In September, its last supermarket closed, and the city has been declared a "food desert" by the USDA. The place is literally dying, its population having plummeted from above 120,000 in the Fifties to less than 80,000 today."

From NJ originally, and having visited Camden long ago, this is saddening. And yet the opposite end of the state, where I grew up, is quite well off.
On average then, I suppose, NJ is doing okay.

1. That is complete nonsense. The Pentagon budget this year is $495 billion, 10% of which is $49.5 billion. There are 1.2 billion people worldwide in abject poverty, so that comes to $41.25/year per person.

Applying Camden ratios we've have had 300-400 murders over that period and would now have a police force of about 90.

I was at a sales call 20 some blocks northwest of downtown Chicago on Friday afternoon. From the 3 flat i was in you could almost literally spit on I 94 traffic in the southbound lane. This building had been occupied by this couple for 40 years and they claimed they were going to put it on the market for 600 K after I did some structural improvements for them. I would not get out of my car in that neighborhood unless I had my 870 full of 00buck and both 9's concealed and only then to travel from the car to the building. WTF? This is in a "decent" neighborhood according to the residents. I am 59 years old and don't recognize my country. My suburban 1600 ft 3 bedroom w 16x32 inground pool and hot tub in sun room sells for 189 tomorrow. Who the fuck in their right mind would live in the city? They both however were long time Public Service of the City of Chicago and living on a healthy pension so maybe I just answered my own question. There are some neighborhoods in south Chicago I simply refuse to go. Some parts of west side are the same. I did notice there were only 2 shooting deaths over the weekend in the city but 59 wounded in other shootings. Piss poor aim I would say.
