We discussed Camden in 2012, 2013, and 2014... and had a different opinion.
All over America, formerly prosperous communities are being transformed into crime-infested wastelands of poverty and despair. Of course the most famous example of this is Detroit. At one time, Detroit was the greatest manufacturing city that the world had ever seen and it had the highest per capita income in the entire country. But now it has become a rotting, decaying hellhole that the rest of the planet laughs at. And of course Detroit is far from alone. There are hundreds of other U.S. cities that are suffering a similar fate. In this article, the focus is going to be on Camden, New Jersey, but the truth is that there are lots of other "Detroits" and "Camdens" all over the nation. Jobs and businesses are leaving our cities at a staggering rate, and what is being left behind is poverty, crime and extreme desperation.
Earlier this month, Rolling Stone published an article that took a hard look at the nightmare conditions that exist in Camden. A city that once made Campbell's soup and some of this nation's most famous warships is now a national disgrace. The following are six of the best quotes out of that article...
-"In September, its last supermarket closed, and the city has been declared a "food desert" by the USDA. The place is literally dying, its population having plummeted from above 120,000 in the Fifties to less than 80,000 today."

This has been an issue since 1970 and Camden has been deindustrializing since the mid-60s. Even the large manufactureres that have stayed like Campbell Soup are a shadow of their former selves and do very little actual production there anymore. Hell, my family relatives in Hammonton, NJ, used to have one of the biggest tomato contracts and a few other huge vegetable contracts with Campbell but that dried up more than 20 years ago due to Campbell decreasing local production there.
Basically once the Shipyard close in the late 60s and RCA went the way of the dodo, Camden wasn't able to recover even if there is a ton of wealth right on the city line in the NJ suburbs just like Detroit.
Politicians in Camden and NJ have tried to fix this through a variety of methods and Camden is probably a bit better thatn it was 5 years ago only because the baseline in that case would be so bad.

Has Obama ever been to the bad parts of Camden without any security? No, so end of discussion here. I've been there and I can tell you that Newark and Asbury Park holds more promise than Camden. Uh... have you been to Spokane? It is a colossal and famous shithole. It has had zero economy since the end of mining and logging. The largest two employers there are the state and the hospitals (ony because the meth trade is not calculated).
