Thousands Gather At McDonald's Headquarters Demanding Higher Wages

Tyler Durden's picture

On Wednesday, we got a look at a leaked WalMart training video in which a series of “associates” (read: hilariously bad actors) patiently explain to new hires why unions are bad.

The video is especially relevant in light of the retailer’s recent battle with intractable “clogs and leaks” at several locations and if “clogs and leaks” actually means “unions” then it makes a lot of sense why the company closed its Pico Rivera location because if ever there were a WalMart store that suffered from stubborn “plumbing problems” then Pico Rivera is surely it.

But WalMart isn’t the only giant multinational that just can’t seem to get the “plumbing” fixed because as you’ll see below, legions of McDonald’s workers descended on the company's Illinois headquarters ahead of the annual shareholders meeting in an effort to show the company that they are most assuredly not “Lovin’ It.”

Here’s The Chicago Tribune:

Potesters hailing from as far away as Kansas City and New York City participated in a demonstration at McDonald's Oak Brook headquarters Wednesday, urging that hourly wages for the burger giant's front-line workers be increased to $15 an hour.

Darrell Miller, 35, who said he left Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday night on a bus filled with other protesters, said he decided to join in because it was his dream to march like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and fight for freedom.

His job at McDonald's, he said, gives him no control over his life or his independence because the $7.75 an hour he is paid barely covers his bills.

Protesters, who had gathered about a half a mile west of the headquarters, slowly marched toward McDonald's campus shortly after noon. At the head of the long line of protesters several held aloft a banner: "McDonald's $15 and union rights, not food stamps. #fightfor15."

The Oak Brook police estimated the crowd at about 2,000 people. Organizers had projected that upward of 5,000 would participate in the demonstration.

Before demonstrations began, Heidi Barker, a McDonald's spokeswoman, said the company does not have the power to raise wages of workers employed by its franchisees. She said it's possible that franchisees will follow the company's lead and also raise wages of front-line workers.

McDonald's will increase starting wages to $1 above the local minimum at 1,500 company-owned restaurants effective July 1. While that increase affects more than 90,000 employees, those restaurants account for about one-tenth of McDonald's restaurants across the country. Franchisees, which operate the majority of U.S. restaurants, make their own decisions on pay and benefits. Overall, about 750,000 employees work at company- and franchisee-owned McDonald's restaurants in the U.S.

Given that McDonald's can play the "it's up to the franchise owners" card when it comes to wages, one approach to dealing with rising wages if you're the company is simply to decrease the number of company-owned locations, which is why we aren't surprised to learn that the company is refranchising thousands of stores:

  • MCDONALD'S WILL REFRANCHISE 3,500 STORES GLOBALLY BY 2018
  • MCDONALD'S SAYS MOVING TO 90% FROM 81% FRANCHISED GLOBALLY

And while the company's employees may not be getting rich, its shareholders sure are, and it's all courtesy of central banks. McDonald's completed its largest reverse Yankee bond sale in history this week, raising $2 billion, money which, as you can see below, will be promptly used to buy back stock, enriching shareholders and management even as workers strike for higher wages. In other words: not only is the QE 'wealth effect' not working, the exact opposite is happening. Central bank policy is serving, once again, to exacerbate the wealth divide:

  • MCDONALD'S SEES RETURNING $8B-$9B TO SHAREHOLDERS THIS YR

Of course Illinois’ fiscal nightmare isn’t helping matters for workers in the state, as budget cuts aimed at closing a $6 billion funding gap are driving up prices for services:

Adriana Alvarez said that since joining the Fight for $15 campaign last year, her hourly wages at a McDonald's on Cicero Avenue jumped by $1.75 an hour, reaching $10.50 an hour. But the single mother of a 3-year-old boy said her costs also continue to go up and state budget cuts affected a child care subsidy she receives.

And according to union officials, the battle for higher burger flipping wages is just getting started:

Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, called on McDonald's to sit with a union at a national bargaining table and put some of its profits into the pockets of workers.

"Even when we get $15 and a union we will keep fighting," Henry said.

We suspect it might be just a matter of time before McDonald's and some McDonald's franchisees decide that now might be a good time to fix the plumbing at certain locations.

*  *  *

A reminder to McDonald's: WalMart suggests you discourage this kind of thing early on by showing this to new hires...

Scenario #1 - You're the lucky person who earns $15/hour to drop a vat of fries: The other workers at your restaurant lose their jobs.

Scenario #2 - Someone else at your restaurant earns $15/hour to drop a vat of fries: YOU lose your job.

Scenario #3 - Owner says fuck it and buys a machine to drop vat of fries: EVERYONE loses their job.

why should they not bitch about their wages?

do any of their "executives" work the front line and have to tolerate the fucking abusive language and nonsense from their "customers"?  The average American who barely acknowledges them, talks on the cellphone, thrusts their palms in their face demanding their change?

I work the front line at a second job as a direct result of this depression.  In my former high paying job I probably wouldve have operated in the same manner to the front line.

I now have an incredible appreciation of what these workers go thru in dealing with the most self centered, self important, egregious assholes.  The ME SO IMPORTANT segment of our society.

Why should the executives make 100x what they make?  They don't make the company any money.  They are bureaucrats.

The product or service is not the issue. The price sure is! Who defends the customer who demands the lowest price possible? MCD workers also shop in WAL and will have to be forced to pay higher price now too.  They will be very lucky to break even! The vulnerable & unskilled gets screwed on this big time! The union bosses & organizers rejoice!

Everyone should spend a year or two in retail experiencing the joy/sarc/of the American consumer.  It is my idea of hell.

I'm not arguing about their food quality.  What I am saying is that unless you experience what they endure you cannot possibly understand what they endure.  They deserve $15 but I doubt if McD can afford it unless salaries are reduced overall and that is not the American way.

Nonetheless, all executives should be required to be on the front lines for at least two to three months a year in order to have an appreciation for those workers who support their high salaries.

The union movement and minimum wage history dates back to the late 1800's and early 1900's to defend the northern construction workers against the southern black construction workers (who were prolific and built much of america) & who were willing to work for less wages. The 'minimum wage' was a wage that actually made the northern workers competitive & effectively shut out the black southern workers. The rest is just collasal bull shit & organized crime extortion!

Robots. And it's been shown that customers can enter their own orders into the touch screen better than the mirror fogger behind the counter because they actually care about getting the right food and being billed correctly. Soon there will be 2 McDonald's employees per shift, a manager and a person to load the machine hoppers. The rest will be automated/mechanized and the transition will be blamed on employee demands.

This is for Itchy and Scratchy and other ignorant mofos.

In Germany and the Netherlands, McDonalds workers make 15 dollars an hour (12 euro minimum wage,) PLUS every one here gets 5 weeks vacation from Day one.

Result?  Still big profits for McDonalds, Netherlands.

The minimum wage and 5 week vacation has nothing to do with UNIONS.  Its a National Law.

38 hour work week is standard also, and time and half over 8 hours a day,  double time on Sundays and triple time on Holidays.

And THAT is why even a McDonalds worker here has money to go on vacation to the Med and worldwide.  They even can afford to go visit the USA>

How many McD's workers in the USA can afford to visit Europe??

They may pay their employees more, but they also have fewer employees in their McDonalds.

"McDonald's is already deploying mobile ordering in other countries. In France, you can order a McDonald's hamburger from a mobile device, tablet or desktop and pick it up later at a restaurant, said Thomas Husson, a Forrester analyst in a report."

Something has got to give, especially when you have declining revenue and profits. Look at stock symbol MCD.

The MW stat is such bullshit from the get-go and the average person is dopey enough to believe it! Over 80% of the MCD workers are not at minimum wage. The longer you successfully work with them the higher the hourly rate you get - albeit small increases Most are young enthusiastic students (NOT SHOWN IN PICTURE) who are very happy to get a pay check to cover costs & spend! For many its their 1st job ever! The average worker works at MCD for less than a year. Most use the job to build basic skills and experience for their resume. Many many great & successful people have flipped burgs there! MCD has been a great innovative & important company to the economy!

Take as many photos as you can of the protestors. Load images onto website. Use google chrome to do some image matching.

Publish expose on every person in the crowd that does not work for McDonald's (but is affiliated with SEIU)...

If the person does work for McDonald's, shitcan them.

Americans are lemmings.  -thats what I hear a lot around here.

The idiotic comments calling us ''socialists'' because we have 15 euro an hour miniumwage and 5 week vacations.

Here are some more FACTS.

We have 6 percent REAL unemployment in REAL numbers.  while you have about 20 percent in REAL numbers.

I don't know of anyone losing their home or living off Credit cards because we have high wages.  Pay Day loans are ILLEGAL here.  But I guess you would say ''We love freedom to fleece people''.

Next MYTH you like to spew is ''we are being overrun by Muslims''.   More bullshit.

You know why you folks are so ignorant?  Because you allow your brains to be pickled by FOXCNNABCCBSNBC  The biggest liars and propagandists on the planet.

WE have more small businesses per capita than the USA.

WE have about 10 internet providers in our small country of 17 million and most of country is now Fiber Optic.  Average cost?  20 euros a month UNLIMITED.

Cell phone providers., about 6 vying for customers meaning LOW PRICES.  10 euros a month for 4G .

OH and one more myth you believe. is that we have free health care.  WRONG!!  WE have all private single payer, for 100 euros a month unlimited. Better health care and faciilties than in USA also.  We ranked number one in the world as per Wikipedia.

So instead of ranting about  ''libs'' and ''commies' and ''socialists';' I suggest you get educate and stop making fools out of yourselves.

There really aren't enough vile expletives in the universe to describe some of you gullible knuckledragging yahoos.

I remember doing some work for MCD corporate probably about 10 years ago... they had a test site in a warehouse out in the subburbs where they were testing a plan to eliminate most of the staff through automation, where they would have touchscreen kiosks you would order from, and had automated a lot of the kitchen activities like cooking the fries, burgers and a few other things to where a store could be run with only a handfull of people.

anymore... I wonder how long till they actually implement that..

You will walk into MickeyD's, order off a kiosk, pay via kiosk, the robot burger flipper will cook and prepare your burger, and one of the three workers still working (but making $15 an hour) will hand you a tray with your order number on it. There will be another $15 an hour employee restocking supplies for the burger flipping robot, and one $50 an hour employee surfing porn sites while waiting for one of the robots to need fixing.

The crisis would end tomorrow if: (just few random points)

1 triple minimum wage and triple all other wages proportionally, abolish tax on small business.

2. Eliminate income tax on wages, and temporarily eliminate sale taxes, increase tax on capital gains to 35%.

3.Triple barriers and tariffs on imports and exports including variable tax on oil depending o markets.

4. at least 10% Financial transactions tax and capital outflow controls. Close earned income loophole  retroactively and demand payment arrears.

5. One time 5% tax of total wealth located abroad and in US of US companies and individuals worth more than 15 millions to pay national debt.

6 . Nationalize banks,. abolish FED, seize assets, arrest bankers ,buy and retire underwater real estate and under appreciated assets, student loans. Break up companies of 2 billions or more in revenue foreign or domestic. Outlaw lobbying by lobbyists except for constituents at local office only. ban money from politics, create public election TV for all ads campaigns. Denounce WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA etc., return to bi-national agreements.

7. outlaw monopoly position of  health insurance , increase their tax, create national health, life disability insurance ( medicare like, reduce drug costs 99%) and all national car insurance to compete.

8. release all non-violent offenders except for banksters since the caused violent damage to society. Close private prisons. Dismantle companies that run them. Reduce sentences 50% and guaranties good paid jobs for all inmates while in prison and during probation. Close all bases in the world cut paid military spending 90%. Reduce police pay to national average. Shut down spy agencies, arrest those responsible for violating constitution including much of congress and executives.

9. Round up all illegal immigrants. Train them professionally and politically , give them money and political support to come back to their  countries to make  changes so they will not have to emigrate.

10. and much more.

Six weeks and you gonna have 5 jobs for one candidate and mainstream economy moving fast. The parasites will loose jobs.

Let these globalists run away we the people, have enough expertise to do it ourselves would pick up their assets on cheap since they belong to us anyway.

That would be a regime change we can believe in. But that would mean war.

THe average age of a minimum wage worker is 36 . according to some article ZH posted.. that means teens are not the primary source of labor.. from my experience.. in our local McD. . most of them are women in their 30s or 20s .. many with children .. there are NO JOBS .. the jobs that used to be there have been filled by Mexicans . .ala meat packing .. here in Georgia where the wages were among the highest for low paid skill sets.. that is until the cheap labor spiggot opened .. wage packages back in the 80s were in the 20 bucks an hour range.. the turnover was low . .. conditions were clean . now there is 100 percenbt turnover... same is true for whatever factory jobs are left. .. illegals get 90 percent of them .. most jobs since 2000 in the service sector have been filled by immigrants legal and illegal on both ends of the scale .. machine tool guys made 20 bucks an hour in the 90s . its about the same now . in Germany the average wage is about 27 dollars an hour .. and they did not divest themselves of their best manufacturing to ship to China .. in fact the US worker is NOT competing against he GERMANS or the SWEDES or the SWISS they are competing against third world country SLAVE LABOR in CHina, Mexico . fill in the blank .. the outlook for the minimum wage worker . . is . work for free . or slave wages  . and that is it .. granted robots will take over . but where does it leave thsee people . it leaves them on the govt. dole TOTALLY as the are squeezed out of low skill jobs by a never ending supply of cheap foreign labor . welcome to the USSA. PS .. in Georgia that cheap labor comes at a price.. the cheap and cheaper labor that has taken over in carpet manufacturing . .meat p[acking . road crews . .building .. etc .. their children cost the state 928 million a year to educate . and over a billion to medicate .. and incaceration is in the hundreds of millions . .. there is NO FREE lunch . the plutocrats who promote slave labor ala open border migration make out and dump the social costs on the taxpayer .. illegals send a LOT of the money they make back to Mexico so its not spent HERE ..

By far most MCD employees are students or young unemployed types like most fast food businesses. MCD hires lots of older senior/retired types for day shift work. The average age is meaningless. There has indeed been severe wage compression over the past 3 decades. Union extortion was the main reason for job loss early in the globalization process. Those jobs never came back and the unions didnt care. They just moved onto fresh targets & public service.  Also the spending demands by government contributed to the mix with higher taxes, rules & regulation. And now they want to tax carbon! Asia has been a wonderful market for many North American exports. Incessant money printing has created stealth inflation that has not benefitted wage growth since manufacturing has been hollowed out thanks to ALL the previous administrations. Skilled job protection is the key in some form but barring embargos or trade tariffs. Low skilled service  jobs will continue to be pressured especially if wages are forced higher!

White teens used to do the jobs at McDonald's but now, at least in the 3 I visited in 3 different states the last year all of the workers were, apparently, Mexican, although they could have been Central Americans.

The dollar is not worth what it was in 1950 or 1960.
Criminal government and business regimes have TRASHED the White middle class in every way. And it was by design, not by accident.

It is a terrible thing that they have done to this country.

It is great that they have the work ethic which really drives America! Even nicer that employers are not driven by race but by producing a product at the lowest price possible thereby enriching everyone! Self-interested Government is definately the elelphant in the room. They sure have have stifled economic growth at almost every turn! Hopefully at some point the fearless leaders will get the hell out of the way so the spirit of innovation, growth, & REAL wealth building can flourish!
