Chinese State Paper Warns "War Will Be Inevitable" Unless U.S. Stops Meddling In Territorial Dispute

Tyler Durden's picture

Whereas over the past year, ever since the outbreak of the hostilities over the fate of Ukraine following the Victoria Nuland orchestrated presidential coup, relations between Russia and NATO have devolved to a Cold War 2.0 state as manifested by countless interceptions of Russian warplanes by NATO jets and vice versa as depicted in the following infographic...

... at least China was mercifully allowed to stay out of the fray between the Cold War enemies.

This all changed this month when first the Pentagon's annual report to Congress this month cast China as a threat to regional and international peace and stability, followed several weeks ago when, with China aggressively encroaching into territories in the South China Sea claimed by US allies in the region such as Philippines, Vietnam and Japan, the US decided to get involved in yet another regional spat that does not directly involve it, and started making loud noises about China's territorial expansion over the commodity-reach area.

China promptly relatiated by threatening a US spy plane during a routine overflight, while immediately thereafter the US retaliated at China's escalation, and warned that building sea "sandcastles" could "lead to conflict."

Far from shutting China up, earlier today China said it had lodged a complaint with the United States over a U.S. spy plane that flew over parts of the disputed South China Sea in a diplomatic row that has fuelled tension between the world's two largest economies.

Quoted by Reuters, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday China had lodged a complaint and that it opposed "provocative behaviour" by the United States.

"We urge the U.S. to correct its error, remain rational and stop all irresponsible words and deeds," she said. "Freedom of navigation and overflight by no means mean that foreign countries' warships and military aircraft can ignore the legitimate rights of other countries as well as the safety of aviation and navigation."

China had noted “ear-piercing voices” from many in the U.S. about China’s construction on the islands and reefs.

In other words, China just imposed an effective "no fly zone" for US spy planes, a dramatic shift from its recent posture when it tolerated and turned a blind eye to US spy plane overflights. Going forward, the US has been explicitly warned not to fly over China or risk the consequences.

This handout photo taken on March 16, 2015 by satellite imagery provider Digital Globe shows a satellite image of vessels purportedly dredging sand at Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea

And just to confirm that if the US had hoped it could threaten Beijing into submission and force the Politburo into curbing its expanionist appetit, it was dead wrong, the nationalist Global Times, a paper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper, the People’s Daily, said in a Monday editorial that war was “inevitable” between China and the United States unless Washington stopped demanding Beijing halt the building of artificial islands in the disputed waterway.

PressTV has more details:

A war between the United States and China is “inevitable” unless Washington stops demanding Beijing halt its construction projects in the South China Sea, a Chinese state-owned newspaper warns.

“If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea,” The Global Times, an influential newspaper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper the People’s Daily, said in an editorial Monday.

“We do not want a military conflict with the United States, but if it were to come, we have to accept it,” said The Global Times, which is among China’s most nationalist newspapers.

Beijing last week said it was “strongly dissatisfied” after a US spy plane defied multiple warnings by the Chinese navy and flew over the Fiery Cross Reef, where China is reportedly building an airfield and other installations.

“The intensity of the conflict will be higher than what people usually think of as ‘friction’,” it warned.

The paper also asserted that China was determined to finish its construction work in the South China Sea, calling it Beijing’s “most important bottom line.”

Such commentaries are not official policy statements, but are sometimes read as a reflection of government thinking.

More importantly, they serve as populism-timestamped warnings that US demands for a Chinese retreat over what the world's most populous nation considers' its own national interest, will backfire dramatically and the next time a US spy plane flies over the Spratly Islands, or Beijing's smog for that matter, a very serious diplomatic incident may ensue.

This is true, but no one currently believes the US will sink into the sea. Not even China or Russia believe that. It would take America losing quite a bit of ground from where it stands today. For the to happen though, you'd already have needed to chose a side and it would be too late.

I used to go along with the notion that the gold in Fort Knox was gone .... but on reflection, perhaps not.

It is certainly re-hypothicated many many times.... but the old rule of possession being 9/10'th's seems to imply that greedy sociopaths would never allow it out of their possession.

Ok .. maybe send a few hundred tonnes to Germany where they have a nice second home, just as insurance so that they always have some physical gold in the event that they are chased out of the USA.  Same goes for small amounts in a variety of other 'second homes'.

EDIT:  Zerohedge's comment system is rubbish ... you reply to a post, and your reply ends up in what seems like a random location.... utterly useless for a high profile site.  They could learn from Reddit or Slashdot or .... almost everyone else.

You don't really have to start getting scared until, like now, both sides trot out the tired old meme that "War is the last thing we want with... (fill in country name here)."  Because the next word after that is always, "But."

Well Sabre rattling is usually the first stage of a war. And if I was a strategic thinking Russkie or ChiCom I would seriously consider launching sooner rather than later if I was going to attack the US.

You know, while we have no leader and the population is in disarray and turned against itself. Oh and the military is in low morale and weakened by dissention and forced retirement of any decent officiers.

Yep I would be moving those plans to the front burner, who knows, we might f#ck up and elect a real leader next time. god forbid

Looking on the bright side, "Pension Rights" in the insolvent West (includes Australia) are going to be evaporating pretty quickly, and our "Retirement Homes" are no better than a colleague's apt description - "Warehousing for Wrinklies", so maybe the pretty "sudden end" resulting from an exchange of today's "modern weapons" might not be such a bad outcome.

The "lucky" nearest the detonation epicentres will be dead (and vapourised) well before their brains can recognise the event (about 100 mSec give or take); those living further away might not be so "lucky" . . . . . .

Whatever survives will still have a few billion years to try to "get it right" this time around . . . . . . (before the sun makes life as we know it impracticable)

A war with China is the perfect means of recovery for the West. We will get a chance for once to manufacture our own TVs and all the other crap that we currently import from the East. It ain't real to TV Viewers till people are killed or taken prisoner in a confrontation.

Escalation is the name of the Game.

I predict that the next step is one side shoots down a plane or kills some military service members. otherwise the escalation is not occurring.

Cold Wars get set up with safeguards to prevent nuclear exchanges or full war. But Escalation is still the game and we can all tolerate a few people getting killed.

This is why Service members get praise for their Bravery.

Good points, TV88. I do wonder, however, about this new detente thing going on, and whether the old reliance on mutually assured destruction still applies. Nukes are heading into the grey area of tactical utility, especially with the advent of neutron bombs and the incorporation of fissile materials in projectiles. There have been several claims of nukes being used in Yemen and Ukraine over the past few months alone, and while the evidence for this is weak, just the fact that these claims are increasingly circulating through non-corporate media channels tells me that the nuclear detente paradigm may be dissolving.

China has no legitimate claim to the south china sea - look at the map. there are four countries closer to the spratleys.

they are building missile / air bases in the middle of the ocean, on sand spits in international waters, with the spratleys being the first, with more to follow, even further from China.

this is arguably the key trade route in the world and they wish to turn it into a toll road, a private road - whatever you want to call it.

no matter how the US fucks up elsewherse overseas, here is an example where a trespasser should be bounced out on his ear.

You need to stop thinking of things in terms of countries. The nation-state is an idea whose time has come. All this sabre rattling is just theatrics to confuse the sheep and ensure that when the UN does take over, there is no alternative. Soros, Kissinger, Jacob Rothschild et al have worked their whole lives to achieve this and they want to see the result before they die

Guys, guys, get a grip.  I know it is exiting on this Memorial Day to dream of massive formations of men going at each other on the beaches of California or in the heart of Asia.  It won’t happen.  You can never again do a Normandy style invasion.  Tactical nukes make it impossible.  What you can do is turn out the lights, sit back and watch the locals eat each other.

I agree with you that meat sacks can no longer storm the beaches ala 1944. But just like technology can't decide on thin client versus fat client and so is forever morphing from client to server and back again, meat sack versus directed networked disposable smart munitions could probably find a way to make invasion possible once again.

Like you, I don't see anything breaking out tomorrow, but in 5 or 10 or 20 years, the world, from a tactical point of view, is going to look very different than it looks today.

Think millions of disposable smart bombs at $100 a piece that can communicate on a series of floating encrypted subnets and can then route themselves over long distances to gps coordinates.

Think how important the techology behind UPS would be in the logistical supply chain of the next major dust up. Then strip out the human element and scale it up to machine speed.

The real question in my mind is going forward, who is going to field the better tech talent? The US or China?

The Chinese are pretty damn smart, but until they open up their culture to allow abject failure (and by extension wild success) they are probably going to continue to play second fiddle to the smart kids in California who can take flier, fall flat on their face and then go on to invent the next Google.

Interesting dilemna for international law.

If the waters are international, and a Chinese ship  is sailing, or drifting through the international waters, then some other country can't attack that ship, right?

In a way, is not China building a stationary ship of sorts?  So just as a country can't take over those islands (analgous to piracy if the new constructed island  is commandeered by the US) neither does  China have a right to protest  US overflying those "island vessels".

However, if China uses those new islands to launch patrol vessels for the sake of harrassing or intimidating other countries' vessels, then are not those islands analgous to the mother ships from which  the pirates off the coast of Somolia were launching their speed boats  to pirate/attack  international vessels?

The US keeps giving Israel billions as it continues to build settlements...and nukes... meaning the US is violating its own laws to subsidize Jewish colonialism and diplomatic cover to protect Israeli apartheid colonialism and illegal occupation from the consequences of dozens of UN resolutions and violations of the Geneva Conventions.

This is in addition to having killed millions of civilians in Korea, Vietnam, and tens to even hundreds of thousands in other theaters like Cambodia and Laos.

Maybe what China is doing is aggressive, and maybe it is in contravention to the law of the sea or whatever the fuck - but the US and Israel are the heavy weight undisputed champions of war crimes and ignoring international law.

Devoid of any moral authority at all, pilots should disobey orders to continue flying over 'disputed' islands thousands of miles from us shores on the thin pretext of protecting freedom of navigation.

TRANSLATED:

"Putin: RUSSIA will bankrupt a severing of links with the Ukrainian DEFENCE INDUSTRY"

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the cooperation ties with Russian companies put the Ukrainian defense companies to the brink of bankruptcy.

In his speech at the meeting of the Commission for military-technical cooperation with foreign countries, Putin said Russian companies ' strong position in the global market of advanced military technology.
Foreigners ordered from Russia at $ 50 billion

The President noted that Russia consistently holds the second place "on a complex and vibrant arms market" and has a great portfolio.

However, Putin also said that Russia is increasingly confronted with attempts to sabotage the DEFENSE INDUSTRY, including the use of political methods. He cited the example of Ukraine, which, until recently, maintained cooperation ties with Russian companies:

"We are increasingly faced with attempts to direct combat, sometimes these attempts to go beyond the competition and are frankly aggressive character, and can be, and policy tools are used actually as a subtle means of competition.

Before our eyes the example of our neighbours-Ukraine, where the gap of long-standing cooperation ties with Russia, vital for Ukrainian Defense enterprises, has put many of them to the brink of bankruptcy, forced to reduce staff".

Isn't this why genius Jaresko requested $40 billion for Ukraine on top of the $5 billion US Taxpayers were already robbed of?  Before the IMF shelled out billions for them? http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/414e2544-d16d-11e4-98a4-00144feab7de.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_oligarch

of the 13 listed there -
9 of them are jewish or part jewish in a country that is less than 2% jewish.

the situation is largely similar in Ukraine, where much of the media is in the hands of Jews, who are under .5% of the population.

http://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2014/03/the-unstable-alliance-of-na...

But I would never discuss this because discussions of wildly disproportionate Jewish power in dozens of countries is "hate".

also hate to point out that it was Jewish oligarchs who got rich stealing Russia's wealth, settign them back over a decade, under Yeltsin, with the help of Jewish economists and academics in the US.

http://www.softpanorama.org/Skeptics/Pseudoscience/harvard_mafia.shtml

It would be "hate" to suggest that when most people who got rich stealing wealth were part of a group that is a tiny minority, one which has done the same thing in other countries, that there is something like a deliberate and organized effort by, at least members of said group. Hate - and not common sense, it seems/.

So what's the solution? Kill all the Jews? Is that what you're implying? Or do we simply bring back the Nuremburg Laws and not allow anyone who's Jewish to hold any academic, political, or mercantile position of power?

And after you've eliminated the perpetual scapegoat of humanity and still have the same problems of greed and hunger-for-power that is part and parcel of the human experience, what then? Find another scapegoat of a people?

I understand the human necessity to have an answer for all the bad things that happen, but Life's not that simple. Or maybe it is and we don't like the answer!

Only problem is the Chinese might view this as default, and may chose to make their views abundantly clear to the Global financial markets. Some good points in previous replies, and some silly ones.  One thing should be clear, warfare won't be like wars pa and grandpa fought.

Warfare won't be military versus military, but instead, militaryA against citiesB versus militaryB against citiesA.  Which means, not many soldiers shooting guns at each other --- where would they do that, since no significant size invasions are involved?

If you follow the train of thought of some of the smarter messages below, you will now understand why self-sufficiency (NOT GLOBALISM) is crucial.  Any sizable group of individuals should be able to produce EVERYTHING they need to survive and defend themselves.  They don't need to produce the entire quantity of everything, but they need to have the equipment and experience to produce everything, and thus the ability to quickly ramp up quantity as needed if external suppliers hold back supplies or are cut off somehow.  China has been doing this... learning to produce everything important.  The USSA has done precisely the opposite, at the behest of the NWO advocates (which includes WallStreet and the entire government of the USSA).

Given modern technology, there are no barriers to quick escalation into tactical nuclear war, and the emotions involved in nuclear war of any size assures almost instantaneous escalation to total global thermonuclear war between all the self-proclaimed "big shots".

That China is willing to push this silly and unimportant issue so far is a clear signal that China will not stand for being manipulated much longer.  The federal government of the USSA has been so egregious in their bully behavior for over a decade, that virtually everyone around the world is FED UP.  One by one they have been too afraid to tell uncle scam to "shove it", but increasingly they recognize that everyone else feels the same way too.  And so, in a relatively short period of time, the many "small fry" are starting to realize the USSA is a paper tiger.  Oh, not against any ONE of them.  Maybe not against any TWO or THREE of them (except China and Russia of course).  But the USSA is definitely incapable of managing against them all.  And so, the USSA should shut the frack up, stay out of others business, and rebuild their own home.  WHICH THEY WON'T... because the neo-con-jobs are in charge.  And the neo-con-jobs are suicidally insane.

To those who claim China intends to block off the entire south-china-sea area for their exclusive use (and/or charge passage tolls for everyone else)... I would like to know where you get your information.  Or is this just fantasy?  I tend to doubt this scenario, because that's not generally how China rolls.  So put up, or label your claims as fantasy or speculation.

-----

DISCLAIMER:  I do not take sides, for reasons most of you know well.  Namely, every "government" and every "nation" is pure fiction... they don't exist.  And what passes for "government" is nothing but human predators... ALL of whom deserve immediate extermination.  Nonetheless, where this recent behavior is going is very dangerous to most of the world population (albeit maybe less so for me personally).  I'll just repeat what is the most important words of wisdom for those living in the evil empire or their nominal allies... get the hell outta dodge.  Else later, you will be so sorry.

The narrowest gap (between land) in the "south china sea" within 1000km of China is over 900km wide!  And to get to where the gap narrows to 200km wide is 2500km from China.

Maybe I'm missing something, but to bar or charge in a gap THAT wide and THAT far from the "homeland" seems completely insane.

China wanting to find oil in "no mans land" makes way more sense.

I don't know exactly where they're building, but if they're building artificial islands in international waters, then all I can say is... others better get cracking on their own islands if they want a share of whatever is beneath.

Just... don't pollute the south china sea, damn it!

I can honestly say honestann that this statement by you is one of the most profound I've heard in quite a while. It's not China provoking the USA. It's the USA provoking China.  "Get a life.", is apparently a statement that the USA forgot years ago. While China is actually doing just that. As you agree, the insane neocons are all out for corprotocracy, and making money, while the remaining sheeple here don't even pay attention, or give a damn. I think all China has to do is emp one of our surveilance planes, just once, after warnings, and somebody might get a message that we should stop fucking around in their territorial water and mind our own business. Somebody wants a war. Find out who they are and stomp on them. We don't want it. Too many people, too many problems. Let's fix our shit first and to hell with the rest of the world for now. Happy Memorial Day!

As Napoleon once observed in 1803, “When China awakes, she will shake the world.”

Mon, 05/25/2015 - 20:50 | 6131166 honestann
honestann's picture

Yes, I agree.  Except I can't see how anyone can call the "south china sea" territorial waters of China.  Unless you just mean "nearby waters that China as well as anyone else must be free to navigate".

See my message just below.  The southern tip of China is about 500km north the northern portion of the "south china sea"!  And the narrowest gaps (between land) in the south china sea are:

- a 900km+ gap between Vietnam and Brunei about 1000km south of China

- a 200km+ gap between Sumatra and Indonesia about 2500km south of China (in the southern freaking hemisphere)

Personally I think China should just ignore overflights.  For practical purposes, all flights over international waters should be ignored by everyone, including military flights.  If the USSA wants to attack someone, then definitely defend yourself, and make a huge stink internationally.  Everyone on the planet already knows who the big bully is, so anyone who refuses to START trouble looks good, and can leverage that into a win in the end.

I don't know the details of these reef disputes.  Best I can tell, there have been disputes for centuries if not millennia, but the value of reefs in the middle of nowhere have never been significant enough to make a big deal.  And so, I suggest nobody should make a big deal if someone develops a few of those reefs in the middle of nowhere... as long as they don't pollute the ocean.

I say this even though I have to guess that technically speaking, China doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.  Unless these events are happening in the very northern tip of the south china sea, they are so far from China as to strongly question on the face of the facts whether China has any legitimate claim of ownership or exclusivity.

Frankly, I don't recognize ANY claims on ANYTHING that is not occupied and/or developed in a productive way for over one year.  Which means, all those empty islands and reefs are fair game for everyone... as far as natural ethics is concerned.

China's claim to that sea of trouble is the same as the Jews claim to Holy Land.

A long time ago China ruled all that territory around the sea, and like Israel, she is now reasserting her sovereignty over those troubled waters.

Moving Fast Forward the support on American and European Soil from the political & Oligarch's & Elite Classes leads me to believe that a reawakening as to whom rules the Roost sees China and to a lesser extent Russia ( although their partnership is vital as combined they are More than a match for the USSofA & Allies ) gain sway.

Lobbying Super Super Super-Packs & How to Make FRIENDS and Influence People through Investment and NOT bomb the FUCK out of at any cost, including Genocide, is China's winning Formula. AMEN.

Banks need a pay day so they will start a war.  We will get caught in the middle. Long live Israel.  Israel has the longest claim to land of anybody on the earth.

Sometimes the logic of evil is that simple.

They've done this to countries all over the world. Eventually they'll do it to us.

The first shots would be the US sinking fifty cargo ships in US territorial waters off Los Angeles harbor.

FOB..... DUDE..... FOB

The passing of risks occurs when the goods are loaded on board at the port of shipment.

Walmart owned the goods when those cargo ships left port in China.

But look!   Tit for tatish.  50 oil tankers destined for Galveston went up in a hurricane of sunburn missiles.

China doesn't stand a chance against us, but we can't subdue them either. We could sink most of their ships, blockade their ports, shoot down their planes and blow up most of their tanks and they would not give in. They would just use a war to bankrkupt us and then in an decade or less we would be easy pickins. There is no chance this would become a nuclear war.

Note: I should say there is very little chance this would escalate into a nuclear conflict. Not impossible ... just unlikely.

They don't need a war to bankrupt the United States.

The United States is bankrupting itself nicely on its own. The Chinese just have to sit and watch.

A war would jsut accelerate things.

China would have civil war.

All it takes is one small spark to ignite a tinderbox.

LMAO. They can handle huge losses, we can't..no way. Video of one of our unsinkable carriers listing way over and on fire from end to end, will be enough to cause most Americans to rethink letting the oligarchs' meddle around the globe. It is no different than China telling us what to do in the Gulf of Mexico..we would go nuts.

Fools believe we will sweep them from the seas in a few days, and with no losses...we are so vastly superior, they believe. The Chinese and Russians know our strengths and weaknesses too. They are niether stupid nor incompetent. Smart missiles will rain down from hundreds of miles away, and we won't stop them all.

America's oligarchs, now fattened by the Fed, will demand their minions in Congress and the White House whip up a patriotic war frenzy. The MIC will go into overdrive...we need more ships and missiles! Lives lost means only fewer mouths to feed..profits are all that matters; those sacrificed are only cannon fodder.

War is coming. A distraction will be needed when the markets begin to tumble. Incredible levels of debt through loose Fed credit can only go so far. Stock buybacks, 8-9 year car loans, bailouts, etc...have all run their course. A war WILL be far uglier and longer than anyone can imagine. China has a lot to lose too, but they will accept their losses.

Agreed.

Does anyone reading remember the Russian Submarine Kursk? That was the one that went done in the Arctic Ocean above Norway, that one. The media described the Kursk as a missile submarine.....that is "sort of" correct. And the Russian's have many more submarine's of the same class as Kursk.

The Kursk was neither a Bassiltic Missle sub nor an attack sub, it was, to paraphrase, an Aircraft Carrier killer. That is what it is designed for, that is why it was designed and that is the reason for its existence. Aircraft carriers are great for beating up thirdworld dictators and the odd middle eastern strong man. Against Russia or China, they will be almost totally ineffective.

The Kursk class can launch, from depth, cruise missiles specifically for the purpose of neutralizing(sinking) aircraft carriers.

A Nimitz class carrier is truly a marvel of engineering, it really is. its biggest problem is just that, its big, has a MASSIVE radar cross section and is really "effing" easy to see....from tens of miles away. It carries an entire fleet just to 'attempt' to protect it. Just how is that going to work if 40 cruise missles are coming at the fleet at 15m above the water. Oh sure, the Aegis system is there to protect form aircraft but targets coming in a 450 knots 15m above the sea....it would be a turkey shoot for the Russians. Does China have this capability? They know what a carrier is. They know what they need. Don't you think it would have been something they would have been looking at over the last ten years?

This is going to be really messy. The Chinese claim of the spratlys is ridiculous but unless someone can enforce that, they will get it. We'll have a regional war between the Chinese and the Vietnamese (they positively HATE each other), the Chinese and the Japanese as well. But the hubris coming out of Washington just gives me a head ache and Washington's actions over the last 20 years has been alienating allies everywhere.

This is going to be VERY messy and Chinese would love something to happen here to take the mind of their people off the Real-estate crash currently happening. The Chinese government is not above the same crap that the US goernement uses to deflect attention of its people.

You forgot the Chinese commies and the Phillipines... the Chinese commies and the Taiwanese... the Chinese commies and the Malaysians...

And that's the Spratleys.... throw in the Chinese commies and the Koreans... yes, the Korean Navy and Coast Guard are at the point of firing warning shots at the rampaging Chinese fishing fleets ravaging their coastal waters...

Oh.. and the Chinese commies and the Indians... and the Chinese commies and the Nepalese.

Let's not add the Chinese and the Tibetans or the Chinese and the people in Xinjiang. Self explanatary, not?

So... at what point does the commie party political regime achieve a point of unsustainability? We could ask the same question about our own political overlords.

BS. A flaming carrier will only piss off the sheeple, and they will demand retribution.   Nationalistic propaganda rules the day, not reality.  Remember how Bush played the Twin Towers collapse.
