Chinese State Paper Warns "War Will Be Inevitable" Unless U.S. Stops Meddling In Territorial Dispute

Tyler Durden's picture

Whereas over the past year, ever since the outbreak of the hostilities over the fate of Ukraine following the Victoria Nuland orchestrated presidential coup, relations between Russia and NATO have devolved to a Cold War 2.0 state as manifested by countless interceptions of Russian warplanes by NATO jets and vice versa as depicted in the following infographic...

... at least China was mercifully allowed to stay out of the fray between the Cold War enemies.

This all changed this month when first the Pentagon's annual report to Congress this month cast China as a threat to regional and international peace and stability, followed several weeks ago when, with China aggressively encroaching into territories in the South China Sea claimed by US allies in the region such as Philippines, Vietnam and Japan, the US decided to get involved in yet another regional spat that does not directly involve it, and started making loud noises about China's territorial expansion over the commodity-reach area.

China promptly relatiated by threatening a US spy plane during a routine overflight, while immediately thereafter the US retaliated at China's escalation, and warned that building sea "sandcastles" could "lead to conflict."

Far from shutting China up, earlier today China said it had lodged a complaint with the United States over a U.S. spy plane that flew over parts of the disputed South China Sea in a diplomatic row that has fuelled tension between the world's two largest economies.

Quoted by Reuters, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday China had lodged a complaint and that it opposed "provocative behaviour" by the United States.

"We urge the U.S. to correct its error, remain rational and stop all irresponsible words and deeds," she said. "Freedom of navigation and overflight by no means mean that foreign countries' warships and military aircraft can ignore the legitimate rights of other countries as well as the safety of aviation and navigation."

China had noted “ear-piercing voices” from many in the U.S. about China’s construction on the islands and reefs.

In other words, China just imposed an effective "no fly zone" for US spy planes, a dramatic shift from its recent posture when it tolerated and turned a blind eye to US spy plane overflights. Going forward, the US has been explicitly warned not to fly over China or risk the consequences.

This handout photo taken on March 16, 2015 by satellite imagery provider Digital Globe shows a satellite image of vessels purportedly dredging sand at Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea

And just to confirm that if the US had hoped it could threaten Beijing into submission and force the Politburo into curbing its expanionist appetit, it was dead wrong, the nationalist Global Times, a paper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper, the People’s Daily, said in a Monday editorial that war was “inevitable” between China and the United States unless Washington stopped demanding Beijing halt the building of artificial islands in the disputed waterway.

PressTV has more details:

A war between the United States and China is “inevitable” unless Washington stops demanding Beijing halt its construction projects in the South China Sea, a Chinese state-owned newspaper warns.

“If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea,” The Global Times, an influential newspaper owned by the ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper the People’s Daily, said in an editorial Monday.

“We do not want a military conflict with the United States, but if it were to come, we have to accept it,” said The Global Times, which is among China’s most nationalist newspapers.

Beijing last week said it was “strongly dissatisfied” after a US spy plane defied multiple warnings by the Chinese navy and flew over the Fiery Cross Reef, where China is reportedly building an airfield and other installations.

“The intensity of the conflict will be higher than what people usually think of as ‘friction’,” it warned.

The paper also asserted that China was determined to finish its construction work in the South China Sea, calling it Beijing’s “most important bottom line.”

Such commentaries are not official policy statements, but are sometimes read as a reflection of government thinking.

More importantly, they serve as populism-timestamped warnings that US demands for a Chinese retreat over what the world's most populous nation considers' its own national interest, will backfire dramatically and the next time a US spy plane flies over the Spratly Islands, or Beijing's smog for that matter, a very serious diplomatic incident may ensue.

A war with China in chinese waters, in range of chinese land-based planes, and -why not- chinese cruise missiles...

Yes, what could go wrong in this scenario?

The chinese ASMs arent perhaps of the latest make and model, but if they fire 160+ sunburns multi-axial on a carrier group, the CVG will die.

Including irreplaceable sailors and officers.

I dont believe the USN will agree to any such conflict.

160 Sunburns (or equivalents) would be an unnecessary waste to sink a carrier group. 15 to 20 for a carrier, 2 to 3 for a destroyer, and secondary explosions will take care of the rest. US navy has no reliable defense against supersonic missiles, and certainly can't handle manueverable supersonic missiles that China has deployed. Cheaper still, one tactical nuclear / neutron bomb above the group (not counting ecological costs).

Having the carriers burn and melt in front of cameras for a couple of hours before sinking might provide some badly needed shock therapy for those brain dead neo-con lunatics.

Do you think China could get 160 Sunburn missiles in range of a carrier group? Do you think the US would move one into that much danger? I honestly don't.

If I was playing that game, I'd hold the carriers back and launch from land (plenty of good places in the South China Sea) and let the navy hunt down and kill China's navy at it's leisure (a turn of phrase believe me, I'm not suggesting it would be a walk in the park) Sunburn missiles don't have the range needed to fight on the open ocean, they were developed for a war in the Baltic. Up close (in naval wars at least) and personal.

"Do you think the US would move one into that much danger?"

You seem to operate under the delusion that U.S. policy makers actually want to *win*. Somehow you've entirely missed the pattern of the way AmeriKa fights wars in the post-1945 era.

In other words, YES, I DO.

Yes I think China could get 1600 missiles in range of a US carrier group. US naval commanders think so.

Who are you?

You obviously are just an uneducated, uninformed, and brainwashed US military fan boy.

Realizing that our government is actually a corporation run ny the bankers, how is this going to pan out for their corporation?

Unless, of course, they own the arms corporations in China, which wouldn't surprise me.  I know they like to invest in both sides of a war.  The Tarpley piece on how they set-up WW II was quite a read.  They had the shipping, the arms, the steel and the railroads under their control before the first shot was fired.  Is that the plan this time too?

WAKE THE FUCK UP! Steven Blaney, "minister of public safety", chief promoter of the new "legislation", which has been refused constituent oversight, refused comment.

Why are our politicians spending so much fucking time in Israel?  Do they get free blow jobs if they stand really close to that hole in the wall?

"Steven Blaney, Canada’s minister of public safety and emergency preparedness, returned from Israel last week and had high praise for the country’s expertise in cyber security.

“We went to learn best practices in Israel. We can learn a lot from our Israeli counterparts,” Blaney asserted.

Blaney was a kickoff speaker at Israel’s Fourth Annual International Cyber Security Conference. He spoke about ongoing efforts to protect Canadians from cyber threats and work with allies to strengthen the “resilience of the global critical cyber infrastructure.” This relates to the interconnectedness of the fields of government, utilities, banking, communications, health, transportation and more.

Blaney acknowledged Israel’s expertise stems from being under constant cyber-bombardment: “Israel took a threat and turned it into an economic opportunity.”

How disappointed they will be if and when that should happen.  The US military as well as the people they serve live in a Hollywood movie with all the fictional dreams of an 'unbeatable' military force.  People forget that the US's greatest strength, its physical protection from traditional attack being between two oceans, is also its greatest weakness as an Empire.  As a result of its physical isolation, it must maintain a huge naval presence, grounded in massive aircraft carriers that project American air and sea power to the world, and in a vast array of military satellites that funcrtionally carry the burden of global communications.  It takes a huge amount of money to support a global military.  So whilst America has to spend most of her money supporting these global forces, Russia and China can concentrate much less money on developing weapons to fight an assymmetrical war against them, targetting only specific areas of weakness.

The problem with a global military presence is that in war America must maintain a very LONG supply line that can be broken in multiple critical places.  For the last 20 years both Russia and China have beren developing weapons that specifically target America's critical weaknesses - her aircraft carriers and her satellites.  Without them America is dead in the water (forgive the pun).  In the event of an all-out war with China or Russia, every one of America's aircraft carriers will be destroyed within the first half hour, and their most important satellites within the hour.  Without cariers, how will America deliver its military might?  Without satellites how will America direct its troops and weapons of mass destruction?  And most importantly, how will America protect its own shores in that event?

I suppose the message here is be proud of your military, but recognise its critical faults, for if it ever starts a war with either China or Russia, your life will be at high risk - you won't be afforded the opportunity to watch it all on TV or a Hollywood movie - you will be directly involved.

China is pushing the envelope knowing how lost is US and how much controlled by the Oligarchs. The Oligarchs will not have it i.e. a destruction of a Chinese economy that they can try and deal with yet another group of Oligarchs.

China will blink in an escalation not putting the vested power of their State Controlled Oligarchs at risk. This blink is only perceived as weakness in many macho Western minds. But not China where there is shrewdness to retreat and keep poking at the decadent structure fostered by US that is on the trajectory of implosion.

Forget about nations vs nations. It is peace that the Oligarchs of whatever color want. The meme is global domination of serfs of whatever color.

What you see is the tough negotiation going on btw Mafia families with muscle flexes.

Judging by the number of comments in a day, looks like many here are getting really excited.

It's fun to talk about this kind of stuff but IMO the probability of a real shooting war between China and the US is next to nil.

It took the US over 6 months to gather enough forces in the Middle East before invading the tiny insignificant and exhausted Iraq. The navy sent 4 aircraft carriers to the region!

How long will it take the US to gather enough forces for a naval battle against China in the South China Sea? Never.

Not enough money, not enough ships, not enough men, and not enough guts. (Wall St will say Not Enough Returns on Investment)

At least wait till there is a call for draft, or a big order for body bags first.

Who says the war would be in the South China sea? You don't need a force build up to drop an EMP over the United States. Then what? Things would be so messed up in the United States that the invasion would be the US military, not the Chinese.  We would pull our forces from virtually every hotzone in the world to concentrate on enforcing Martial Law in the United States.

I doubt the U.S. and China will ever have a shooting war, but let's say they do.

Tell me please, what will become of the endless throngs of mainland Chinese currently flooding into the U.S.? Southern California is drowning in mainland Chinese people.

Clever isn't it? You send your kids to Havud and Yale, your pregnant wife to NYC to drop illegal kid #3 so he can rack up a US passport, stash your illegal money in the Caribbean then go piss off half of Asia turning it into a sandbox.

Verrrrrry clever.

You've described it very well. You can't swing a dead cat in LA or Orange County, California without hitting a pregnant Chinese girl in the head.

Should we expect this to continue unabated? If so, parts of the U.S. will become Chinese colonies.

If not, then how is the phenomena you've outlined so well going to end?

Gorbachev is warning of a war with Russia, now China warning of potential conflict. How long before somebody takes a mis-step?

This report needs a soundtrack. "Victory AT Sea" theme music by Richard Rodgers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-EXNounv-U

That was then...are there any composers today with this kind of imagination? I'd be happy to hear some of their stuff.

Any idiot that brings up land invasion in a potential war between China and the U.S. is not very intelligent. It wil be a nuclear war . Why don't must of you idiots get that. So please tell me how either country wins a nuclear war. I' m waiting for an answer. And don't tell me one country and surprise the other without the other firing back, also that emp shit isn't going to stop. Either side from launching their nukes at the first sign of being attacked. So riddle me how having your country not livable for thousands of years is the answer. Not to mention the radioactivity circling the planet after. So I will repeat myself in case some of you idiots are slow readers ,,, the next war will be nuclear, that is a fact, therefore how does a nuclear exchange help either country to win . Don't say it won't be cause then you will prove to me you are an idiot . The U.S. will not use a land invasion against the size of China, that's frigging obvious. A US blockade of China would sure as hell have them launching nukes.

It is true a conflict between the U.S. and China would be unfortunate. But, China can not afford to do it right now. First of all, NOBODY is going to use. nuclear weapons, the premise is completely illogical because we are talking about a dispute of economic and territorial expansion. Second, our air superiority has a vast lead on any other nation not to mention it is bolstered by hypersonic UAVS that can intercept absolutely anything and disarm with directed energy platforms along with low earth orbit UAVS capable of multiple re-entry for dissarming satellite bound weapons and repairing satellites. Third, our naval superiority is not even worth talking about becuase it speaks for itself. Point is, the conflict, if started, will literally be a bunch of sitting around. Nobody will move, China isn't dumb enough to try to, and we aren't just going to bomb the civilians of an economic super power... We save that for Yemenis children... So it really doesn't matter if you have millions of soldiers, can you protect them while they move?

They cannot even build an aircraft carrier so you tell me...
