Russia Fed Up With US "Lecturing" As Pentagon Deploys 250 Tanks To Eastern Europe

Tyler Durden's picture

On Monday we noted that Europe has moved to extend economic sanctions on Russia for another six months in response to Moscow’s alleged role in fueling the violence that now plagues Eastern Ukraine. This marks the latest escalation in the ongoing standoff between the Kremlin and the West and underscores the pace at which the situation is deteriorating. Here’s a recap of recent events:

Ukraine has seen its worst outbreak of violence since February’s ‘ceasefire’ this month, with both sides blaming the other for the intensification of hostilities. Meanwhile, the US has dusted off the Cold War playbook (although, ironically, Defense Secretary Ash Carter claims Washington’s stepped up “containment” efforts are part of a new, more modern strategy designed to help America avoid being pulled back into the Cold War), suggesting heavy weapons may be stored in Eastern Europe to ensure NATO forces can deploy quickly in the face of Russian “aggression.” Last week, Belgium, Austria, and France froze Russian state assets in an attempt to enforce an effectively unenforceable ECHR decision stemming from the long-running Yukos debacle, while Germany, Norway, The Czech Republic, and The Netherlands rehearsed a Ukraine siege in Poland.

Now, just a few days after NATO’s latest proxy war dress rehearsal, and just 24 hours after Ash Carter accused Russia of "nuclear saber rattling", we have more details on the Pentagon’s plan to deploy heavy weapons in Eastern Europe. Speaking at a joint press conference, the Defense Secretary outlined the scope of US weapons deployment:

“We will temporarily stage one armoured brigade combat team's vehicles and associated equipment in countries in central and eastern Europe. This pre-positioned European activity set includes tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery. [Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland have] agreed to host company- to battalion-sized elements of this equipment.”

(Carter looking particularly pleased on Monday)

In other words, here's what working towards de-escalation and peaceful coexistence looks like to Washington: "250 tanks, Bradleys, and self-propelled howitzers, and associated armoured brigade combat team equipment [stationed] in Baltic and Central European countries."

Meanwhile, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law (yes, someone actually has that job title in Russia) has accused the US of sabatoging a bilateral agreement aimed at the pursuit of "common national interests" by adopting a "teacher-pupil" mentality. Here's TASS:

Russia is ready to conduct an equal dialogue with the United States and is against the US lecturing on democracy building principles, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov told TASS on Tuesday.

"The Russian-American presidential commission included the civil society group, and there were plans to continue its work," Dolgov said. "But then we got the general answer that the United States was ‘so concerned’ about human rights in Russia that decided to freeze this group among the first — that’s the alogism."

"We’ve never shed and don’t shed any tears over this," the diplomat said. "By the way, the Russian and US civil societies are communicating."

He said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has recently commented on the general situation in relations with the United States. "We’ve received signals from the United States that they are willing to resume dialogue with us one way or another," the Russian Foreign Ministry commissioner said. "We are fully ready for such a dialogue."

The diplomat said Russia had very many problems with Washington in the human rights sphere, in particular, the situation with arrests of Russians in third countries at American requests, the situation with Russian children adopted by US families.

"Dialogue is always a two-way street. The ‘teacher-pupil’ formula will not work anymore," he said. "It will be only an equal dialogue and we are ready to conduct this kind of dialogue."

"And if they want to lecture us on democracy building ways, let them lecture students at some American university," Dolgov said.

The reference here is to the 2009 U.S.-Russian Bilateral Presidential Commission. In April of last year, the US "temporarily suspended several projects and meetings planned under the auspices of the Commission" due to what Washington calls "Russia's ongoing violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity." After cancelling the projects, the US proceeded to channel the associated funds straight to Ukraine:

"Funding for these activities has instead been used to contribute to a package of U.S. assistance to Ukraine, which is supporting economic reform and addressing other pressing needs."

Fortunately for Dolgov, it doesn't appear as though he, or any other Russian diplomats for that matter, will be forced to endure a "lecture" on democracy from the US anytime soon because as the positioning of 250 Bradleys and self-propelled howitzers, and associated armoured brigade combat team equipment" in Eastern Europe makes clear, the time for dialogue of any kind has long since passed.

"He allowed NATO to take out Libya's Qaddafi. He is allowing attacks on Syria's Assad."

Please define 'allowed.' Legally and diplomatically, Russia has never agreed to NATO bombing of Libya and assassination of Muammar Gaddafi. As for the destruction of Yugoslavia, Yeltsin's Russia was too weak to pick up a fight to defend fellow Orthodox Slavs in the Balkans.

careful analysis shows it is not nice to dupe putin. the no fly zone over libya that russia also supported was not suppose to be followed by an all out ground war paid for by usa tax dollars. that was putin's red line. that is why he has blocked any such thing over syria. if you haven't noticed the syria takedown hasn't gone the way the empire has wanted, nor has the ukraine op. do you think that has happened without russia's help?

careful analysis shows putin has gone all in to put together a coalition of hell yea using the brics as a base to forge an alternative political economic market for all countries tired of usa lecturing and punishment for those who don't follow usa dictates.

at the same time the usa is trying to bait russia into a direct confrontation russia has been trying to convince the eurozone that the usa does not care(fuck the eu nuland told you) what damage is done to the eurozone to restore usa omniscience. germany and france are looking for a way out but fear a kaddafi solution for their objection to the usa.

if the usa does not fear russia the usa has jumped the shark. china and russia have each other's back. ask a coupla korean war vets what it is like to face a horde of chinese soldiers coming too fast to kill them all before they over run a position, the greatest bugout in history.

The reality is that Russia (and more recently Putin) has been backing down since Cuba.

Russia will not allow uniformed troops or planes to cross Russia's borders but have and will continue to back up while being bitch slapped (including Putin obviously).

Iraq1, Serbia, Iraq2, Libya, Syria, East Ukraine, Yemen, and on and on.  And those are just the military movements, the economic movements are even more widespread.  Forcing commerce leaders in Russia to hide within Russia's borders or be arrested on fake charges, confiscation of assets and accounts, sanctions etc..

But something is rotten within Russia.  Russia and Putin has assisted the west in the destruction of allies by giving consent to UN actions (abstaining from voting or actually voting for the UN sanctions) out of fear, short term self interest and profits or political/power conflicts within Russia.  Putin twice forced the EUk rebels to accept cease fires once they had trapped large forces of WUk.  The rebel leader called this a betrayal by Putin.

Was Russia in any shape to do anything about Serbia, Iraq1 and Iraq2? No. And what do they get out of getting involved with Yemen? Not everyone is a busybody AmeriKan military juggernaut looking to finance murder, occupation in return for their pound of flesh, thank God for that.

"Lest we forget, while it was Khrushchev who backed down in the Cuban missile crisis, President Eisenhower did nothing to halt the crushing of the Hungarian rebels, Kennedy accepted the Berlin Wall, and Lyndon Johnson refused to lift a finger to save the Czechs when their “Prague Spring” was snuffed out by Warsaw Pact tank armies.

Even Reagan’s response to the crushing of Solidarity was with words not military action."

The Hungarians and Czechs were (still are) seen by the US population as eastern block countries and people.  However if Norway, Sweden, Germany, Spain or even Turkey etc had been overtaken it would have been different.  Those countries also were of little or no economic value to the US, although the US was not happy about it and the Soviets should be credited for making that move (even if they could not hold them).  Also no important natural resources or oil.  The Soviets should have put a base in the upper regions of South America considering the bases the US was putting around the world at the time (and since).

The Berlin Wall was a structure.  It was my understanding that the split of Berlin was agreed to at the end of WW2 and that Russia did not invade a western held independent Berlin.  If my history is incorrect please advise.  Thus the wall was just enforcing a split that was agreed to after WW2.

The reality is that Russia (and more recently Putin) has been backing down since Cuba.

The Russians having been "backing down" lately because they know damn well they are being baited at every turn by the USA and NATO to react to one of their constant provocations, just to give them the chance to say; "see, look at the evil Russians, they attacked XYZ" and then act accordingly - which is more war and on a massive scale.  If the USA and NATO are stupid enough to ever try to actually go into Russia they are going to get their asses royally kicked . . . .

But something is rotten within Russia.  Russia and Putin has assisted the west in the destruction of allies by giving consent to UN actions . . .

Bullshit Stumpy . . . if it wasn't for Putin and Lavrov intervening we could potentially now be digging out of the rubble of WWIII due to the "west's" insistence on bombing Syria at the time.

German penetrators use tungsten carbide, considered "green" because it doesn't require radiological mitigation.

I remember reading not but two days ago reading quotes from an interview with some DOD brass saying something to the effect off "we can't afford any more provocations, both sides need to back off the throttle, there is already to much stuff, to close together, operating in to small a space, everybody is just inviting a disaster."

so now we have Carter throwing another 250 logs on the fire and it's not just the equipment, it's the message, the arrogance, the reckless disregard for anything close to a reasonable attempt at diplomacy in an area that is naturally of great concern in regards to Russia's national security interests.

first DC and the their EU puppet bitches sanction Russia, for taking a keen interest in what is happening in their own back yard, for taking actions to ensure they don't have a hostile NATO presence in their bathtub. sanctions, which are meant for no other reason than to weaken or outright ruin the countries economy, now this is an aggressive and extremely hostile action to take it runs exactly counter to the very basic idea of diplomacy.

it is, in fact an attack, an act of war.

and that's just the sanctions...now DC says we are going to run military drills on your border, in countries that we promised, guaranteed we never pursue or sponsor for any type of military alliance let alone NATO. on top of that Washington dictates that there will be a missile defense shield, also on your border and no, you can't have any say or any part in it, but don't worry, it's not pointed at you.

and now this, 250 more combat vehicles to go along with the some 800 that are already there and 40,000 NATO troops, all on the border and all to "reassure" allies against a false myth of Russian aggression in preparation for a propagandized invasion that they know will never come. and that is what makes this situation so dangerous, all the lies, all the betrayal, all the unchecked aggression and hostility that has been going on, not just recently but for decades.

so how else can Moscow view this recent development as anything less then a preparation for direct military action against them and their vital interests? say what you want about Putin but they would be the worst kind of fools if they didn't.

and how much longer, how much more pressure needs be applied, how much more provocation and agitation before this builds to it's final and now seemingly inevitable critical mass? Russia may be closing the gap in conventional capabilities but they are still running a deficit against NATO and they also know that they will be subject to a nuclear attack. Washington has made that point clear.

so how much longer before they decide that they have no choice left but to strike first in the hopes that it will cripple NATO enough stave off a larger more devastating war?

and what are the chances that such a strategy will work?

personally, I think we are all in real trouble here and the doomsday clock is ticking.

Pretty funny - it's your fantasy about the Russian army.
Russian army need only one order and only 7 minutes of time to convert all 250 armored NATO tanks in the metal scrap, stuffed with minced meat.

NOW THE NAME OF THE GAME FOR RUSSIA IS GETTING THE NATO FORCE ON ITS BORDER REMOVED.  KALININGRAD OBLAST IS AT RISK.

THE THEATRE SHOULD BE MOVED TO THE EAST PACIFIC.  NEAR HAWAII.  A NORTH KOREAN NUCLEAR TEST SHOULD ALREADY BE A FAIT ACCOMPLI AND BOTH CHINA AND RUSSIA SHOULD HAVE ANNOUNCED PLANS FOR THEIRS.

IF THE NEGRO WANTS TO CONTINUE TO ESCALATE, LET HIM.  HE WILL FIND OUT PUTIN IS NOT THE ONE TO BACK DOWN.

PERHAPS KIDNAPING THE SPACE STATION IS PIRACY AND OUGHT NOT BE DONE.  BUT THE RUSSIAN SEGMENT OF THE ISS BELONGS TO RUSSIA, WHO HAS RESERVED THE RIGHT, AS DID THE WEST, TO DISASSEMBLE IT FROM THE ISS DURING HOSTILE TIMES LIKE THESE.

THE DIPLOMATIC COCK LICKING HAS TO END.

DECLARE FUCKING WAR FOR CHRIST SAKE, AND WATCH THE TOUGH GUYS OF EUROPE GET INTO THEIR SUBMISSIVE POSTURE.

sorry for the bold caps.

EUROPEANS!

When will you tell your Parliaments to stop letting the military-industrial-complex companies dump their stuff off in your countries?

Doesn't it bother your pride just a little, when they keep saying, "Europeans can't protect themselves.  They need us to protect them."

So (if you are a European), don't LET Them.

It's your yard.  Stop letting Americans roll around it in their tanks.

What happens in your yard is YOUR responsibility.  Whose else could it possibly be?

Yet another FSB Tyler post.  There's more of this drivel than salient business commentary, which is this blog's core competency.

By the way, a Bradley fighting vehicle is an APC, not a tank.  There's a very large difference between the two.

But doesn't a Bradley have as much or more firepower than a WW2 Sherman Tank had?

So, the MIC does not classify a Bradley as a tank, but...

Does a Bradley look like a tank, walk like a tank, quack like a tank, swim like a tank, fly like a tank, and lay eggs like a tank?  (A duck, of course.)

Actually, Chicken Licken, it's not as bad as you think.

1) Poroshenko's admission that Yanukovych was unlawfully removed from power weakens Nato and the EU's position that Russia invaded Ukraine (Crimea) without any justification.

And today we learn

2) "The European Union has called for Kiev to give the breakaway Donbass region a permanent special status, a Ukrainian newspaper reported Tuesday, citing a local official.

http://sputniknews.com/europe/20150623/1023761216.html#ixzz3dw2PMQPt

The special status, of course, means "demilitarized", to the Kremlin.

I know this is not recognizing Crimea as part of Russia, but it closer to it than it was last week.

It is unfanthomable to me why America's strategy in Europe is to goad Russia into taking military action. NATO is in no position to defeat Russia militarily, and certainly cannot come to the defense of Ukraine.

At least 20% of Ukrainians are staunchly pro-Russian. Another 20% would rather give the Russians the benefit of the doubt, and would willingly accede to Russian governance rather than continue under the unruly chaos that persists in Ukraine today.

Yet somehow, American strategists want Russia to take this step. And, for some reason, Russia refuses to take it.

In the meanwhile, the people of the Donbass are enduring hell on earth. Ukrainians in the rest of Russian-speaking Ukraine are being harassed and suppressed by the extreme nationalists from Galicia. How long can these people endure their suffering under the boots of the Right Sector nationalists? Russia has to do something. But if not now, when?

Russians Pay Less Tax Than You - And Other Surprising (?) Facts

Russia gets a bad press. Literally. In fact Western media coverage of Russia is almost always extremely negative. That would be excusable if it was mostly accurate, but in fact it’s usually blatantly wrong. The reality of Russia is far removed from the fiction that we’re meant to believe. As investors, understanding the difference is essential. Here are just some of the surprising things about Russia that you probably don’t know...

The CabalPuppetMasters of USA (the Satan) want WW3

These tanks are only (smokescreen) to keep Russia busy on its borders & not enable it to think beyond while..

While Satan tries to gobble up all the middle east oilfields and puts it in the hands of western corporations

After that , try to strike Russia hard to break it up & gobble it too.

Lets see how it is played out & how long.

"In the Iraq War, the Bradley proved somewhat vulnerable to improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attacks, but casualties were light—the doctrine being to allow the crew to escape at the expense of the vehicle. As of 2006, total losses included 55 Bradleys destroyed and some 700 others damaged.[20][21] By 2007, the Army had stopped using the M2 Bradley in combat, instead favoring more survivable MRAPs.[6] By the end of the war, about 150 Bradleys had been destroyed.[22]" (wikipedia)
