It's not as simple as that; flags have become rallying symbols for domestic unity within nation states in peace time and as such are political targets for those who do not like to see national unity.
If we are going to discuss signalling among troops, why not discuss the history of the trumpet? It is not supposed to be used in jazz music since it is a battlefield information tool, isn't it?
The point was people project symbolism onto things, then those things are used to enslave and polarize them afterwards. Not only that people are willfully ignorant to the symbolism that was trying to be encoded into the image in the first place. Flags have their utility outside the battlefield just like a trumpet. They make for good tarps or dew rags and unlike a trumpet I can use a flag to make a tourniquet for first aid purposes.
If you are pledging allegiance to inanimate objects (doesn't matter what the symbolism means) that is just idol worshiping framed in a different manner. We just bullshit ourselves that things are anything but using language and symbolism to obscure what things and actions really mean.

It's some sheet, alright. Things may have changed since my day, but the reason I volunteered for flag duty was because if it rained, me and my buddy Bruce got out of class to lower the flag(s). If it stopped raining, we got out of class to go hoist them back up again. Also, we were dismissed early and allowed to be late to class in order to perform our solemn task.

Confederate flag represents a time of slavery and resistance to federal intrusion into local affairs. Today federal intrusion represents a new equal disopportunity slavery for all. TPTB don't like the resistance part, I do, non of us like the slavery as far as each of us is concerned.
I don't think the flag was created by the south to represent slavery. It happened to be the flag they were flying during the time. For the people of that era, it represented a number of things, just like if you ask somebody now what they think the stars and stripes represent. To me, the American flag represents a bygone era of a once great country. I won't fly it, because I worry that people will think I support what's going on now. That I support the banksters. That I support our continuous wars. That I support government that no longer represents its people. See how this works? When somebody says the confederate flag represents slavery, I think to myself, "well, not to me". So what we have now under the stars and stripes are elitists telling us how to think about the confederate flag. Which is worse?
Actually when flags were used for location of regiments etc, the original stars and bars of the confederacy was too hard to discern from the flag of the union. It was changed to be able to be recognized in harsh battle conditions.
