Venezuela Increasingly Looks Like A War Zone

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the years, we have repeatedly poked fun at the transformation of Venezuela into a "socialist utopia" - an economy in a state of terminal collapse, where the destruction of the currency (one black market Bolivar is now worth 107 times less than the official currency's exchange rate) and the resulting hyperinflation is only matched be barren wasteland that local stores have transformed into now that conventional supply chains are irreparably broken.

Just this past Wednesday we showed a clip of what is currently taking place inside Venezuela supermarkets, noting that "the hyperinflationary collapse in Venezuela is reaching its terminal phase. With inflation soaring at least 65%, murder rates the 2nd highest in the world, and chronic food (and toilet paper shortages), the following disturbing clip shows what is rapidly becoming major social unrest in the Maduro's socialist paradise... and perhaps more importantly, Venezuela shows us what the end game for every fiat money system looks like (and perhaps Janet and her colleagues should remember that)."

Unfortunately, while mocking socialist paradises everywhere is a recurring theme especially once they have completely run out of other people's money to burn through, what always follows next is far less amusing - complete social collapse, with riots, civil war and deaths not far behind.

That is precisely what the video shown below has captured. In the clip, a demonstration against Venezuela's poor transportation services quickly turned violent. End result: one person dead from a gunshot wound, more than 80 arrested and four shops looted on the Manuel Piar Avenue in San Felix.

What is most distrubing is how comparable to an open war zone what was once a vibrant, rich and beautiful Latin American country has become.

This is just the beginning: with the ongoing collapse of the economy, the resultant acts of social violence will only deteriorate and claim more innocent lives, until the "socialist utopia" ends as it always does: with the arrival of a military coup or a full blown civil war.

Not by the people who did (most of) it, cause they'll be dead! The Greatest Generation had the wits to die before the music stopped. Depleting resources is sometimes unavoidable. However one hopes that a fair portion of those resources are depleted in the process of creating infrastructure or other assets of enduring value from which our children will benefit.

So if I cut down a tree to toast my marsh mallows instead of making a fine table that will be passed on down through the generations, it will be a useless exercise in resource depletion.

A reasonable enough deduction of my sentiment that I assume we agree upon the difference in sensible and non-sensical use of resources.

Infrastructure?  Most infrastructure will not last 50 let alone 100 or 200 years without maint. costs equivalent to original build.

Most houses in the US are built of particle board and cinderblock.

What does blacktop look like after 20 years of winter if not re-paved?

I don't consider most of what I see around me as infrastructure.

Dear Throxx,

Once again you are misconstruing why I am saying even though I am not in any real disagreement with what you are saying.

In the area of housing, the US produces a great deal of absolute shit but if you go to other parts of the world you will find houses having been in the same family for 3-4 generations. No doubt there is some maintenance but this is minimal compared to having to replace shit houses with more shit houses every 10-20 years or so.

Infrastructure if built well and maintained is a boon for future generations. You only have to look at some very fine dams and bridges to conclude this. But when neglect sets in we cannot expect miracles to take place.

Why durability when it must be sold to pay inheritance taxes? Both the deceased and the heirs are debt slaves, we know that to be a fact. We will never see a consumption based tax system, the Ponzi would immediately collapse. The politicians know that so any discussions along those lines are demagogue baiters. As the old joke goes we are full up on "master-baiters".

Plastic is benign unless some critter is choked on it, and from a resources shortage point, no shortage of sand for glass containers. Environmental wacko-ism has never been about the environment, it's about the destruction of property rights and its attendant freedom of the individual, vs. the looting by oligarchs. Carbon credits, my ass, bye bye competition.

Energy is all around us and will be exploited when needed, presently there is a glut of energy, thus no need to conjure up solutions. The captive government is the problem. Both parties suck and there will always be Solyndras and ghost cities as long as communists and fascists stay in power.

What else should I expect from dumbed down Americans that can't find their hometown on a map and will elect a fool twice.

I'm sure the barium nano-particles are kosher, too. :(

The Alzheimer's Assocation no longer funds research for or considers aluminum exposure a risk factor worth investigating. Dane Wiggington of GeoEngineeringWatch.org has been all over this.  I was just watching an old Clint Eastwood movie at VUDU and there was some sloppy and obvious splicing of "chemtrail" clouds into some of the scenes. I guess the Chosenites are at it there too. Nothing sells better than death. That's what the Rothschilds figured out when they went whole hog into fractional reserve lending and making sure that both sides of war got funded, and that the debts accrued were always paid. Back in feudal times, that we appear to be returning to, when the plebes got restless, the kings got together and would decide to have war with each other. Gives the "loyal servants" something else to think about.

Funny how Larry lost his appetite for breakfast up there that morning. I hadn't heard that piece. The rabbit hole is deep.

Be careful, though. It's not enough now that we obey. We must believe. :(

I know it may appear as a bit of a stretch to have viewed the video and find the natural cumulus clouds as being the only thing worth commenting on. But I was up at over 8000 feet today in the San Gabriel Mountains, doing a good 5 hours of hiking, and I would have enjoyed it were it not for the fact that there were 3-4 layers of these stratospheric aerosols sprayed overhead during that time, such that toward the end of the hike, when the particulate matter was dropping to ground level, my eyes burned and throat became sore. If you read up on this stuff at the links provided, you'll find that this operational Solar Radiation Management / eugenics program is the real elephant in the room, the true threat to the survival of our species and the ecosystem we inhabit. In a capitalist system, shelves stay full and product expires because no one can afford the product, and the product ends up in landfills.

You obviously have no clue what capitalism is.  But it's not complicated:

It's simply voluntary transactions between willing participants.

Socialism emphasizes consumption and expropiating property. In soft socialism, this type of socialism mainly deals in income redistribution, but again it concerns about consumption. The other type of stronger socialism expropiate all means of production to order to provide maximum consumption. Again consumption is not wealth, it's the product of wealth. Wealth does not necessarily imply 100% employment either. Soviet Union had 100% employment, but had a much poorer standard of living than it's main rival, the USA. For enhanced consumption to occur there must be savings to be deployed in more productive manner such as better technology to make production cheaper and efficient.

In the case of Venezuela, the government there has only been concerned about consumption, ie providing everybody with consumption as the justification to expropiate private property.

"In the case of Venezuela, the government there has only been concerned about consumption, ie providing everybody with consumption as the justification to expropiate private property. "

The justification for expropriation of private property is also cover for those managing the expropriation to provide for themselves first, best and last of the property expropriated.

This is not only a problem in places like Venezuela; but, in ALL places where those who work in/for government live more comfortably and have better benefits and retirements than those they purport to serve.

The bureaucracy serves itself best.  Always.

Venezuela, The US, France, Egypt, wherever: ministers, cops, teachers, clercks, etc.

ALL ARE THE SAME EVERYWHERE.

Read some OLIVER E. WILLIAMSON.

Corporate and public bureaucracies are all the same everywhere: they serve themselves FIRST AND BEST.

Their ignorance predicates/informs their tendancy towards believing the lies told by politicians who utilize the term 'socialism' to encompass the lies predicated/informed by ignorance.

Not knowing what production entails they believe the falsehoods that they are told.

It is easier to believe a lie than to face limited resources and scarcity for what they are...

It is also VERY MUCH easier to believe these lies when there is such obvious disparity in access to resources, and the disparity so obviously not a product of productivty or merit.

Acceptance of neo-feudalism for the Owner's sake is a hard sell.

Jamie Dimon or Lloyd Blankfein are not Billionaires because they earned it all via hard work and ingenuity.  They are master criminals in a well established criminal in a mafia that has captured the world's most powerful government.

Try selling them as 'capitalists' to people that can't a job with a degree, can't pay for a shit-box apartment to have some privacy in a night, whe can't even get on the Godamned subway without being body searched and shaken down.

Damn.

National Security is a mixed bag.

Prices have to be recognized as part of national security... obviously you get unrest if health care costs are hundreds of dollars for Venezuelans. (Something that Americans don't understand)

- Education Cost
- Health Care Cost
- Housing Costs
- Food, Water, energy, Gas, Propane, Natural Gas Costs
- Clothing Costs

Yeah, Americans you don't know what it is like not to have Education, houses, and upward mobility.

But Americans are now Experiencing European Style hikes in Housing, Banking, insurance, Taxes, Property taxes, missing pension, missing savings, and missing inheritances.

Guess what, the power of the government enables the wealth transfer from the middle class and poor class to the wealthy class. Wouldn't you fight for price controls?? Wouldn't you fight for public utilities to keep prices under control?

When situation gets bad enough to where NPO's begin soliciting contributions to provide them food, count me out.

Not that I don't feel for them, but it won't ever cure the problem that brought on the hunger and will continue to.

Their problem is not lack of food, never has been, it's the lack of any legit govt, and an abundance of corrupt socialists.

The only thing I'd ever consider supporting down there is the funding of bullets (not beans) for the people to get rid of their cause of hunger, the govt.

I feel the same way about most other tragic scenes of starvation in Africa, corrupt govt needs to be overthrown by the people and that should be supported by anyone who would truly want to help rid them of their ongoing hunger threats.

"This is just the beginning: with the ongoing collapse of the economy, the resultant acts of social violence will only deteriorate and claim more innocent lives, until the "socialist utopia" ends as it always does: with the arrival of a military coup or a full blown civil war."

Ends as it always does is the USSR, the USA, the UK, the European Powers swoop in with money for the Wealthy Influential Members of Society to get them to pull politics toward Capitalism, toward Moderate Politics, toward very limited socialist program, toward Darwinism, toward Banker Control, and toward Central Banking Policies created by Europe.

Seems clear.

It always ends with the Superpowers exerting their influence on the Latin American Countries.

Well it is not all bad.

I have to scratch my head a little here.

The Wealthy Families do understand Economies and trade.

This is sort of the principal that the USA runs by. Our US Economy and Government are run by the Elite/Wealthy/Educated. There are some great advantages to this. We don't remain as superpowers with Rogue Voices or Independent Empires taking Control. That much is obvious. We have a sort of Government Class that joins with a ruling class and wealthy class. Well they seem to understand banking and economics even if they are liars, obfuscaters, and racketeers.

The US Banks seem to rule and win over other banks and this is one of the "National Security" Policies.

Strong Corporations is not a new idea. The Japanese and Germans exploited this strategy long ago.

Chavez was an interesting fella actually. Said what he thought. But when OPM runs out, shit happens.

I am convinced that path to a new better and possible world is not capitalism the path is socialism. H. Chavez

The descendants of those who crucified Christ... have taken ownership of the riches of the world, a minority has taken ownership of the gold of the world, the silver, the minerals, water, the good lands, petrol, well, the riches, and they have concentrated the riches in a small number of hands. H. Chavez

Mr. Obama decided to attack us, Now you want to win votes by attacking Venezuela. Don’t be irresponsible. You are a clown, a clown. Leave us in peace … Go after your votes by fulfilling that which you promised your people. H Chavez

Everyday I become more convinced, there is no doubt in my mind, as many intellectuals have said, that it is necessary to transcend capitalism. But capitalism can not be transcended through capitalism itself; it must be done through socialism, true socialism, with equality and justice. I’m also convinced that it is possible to do it under democracy, but not in the type of democracy being imposed by Washington. H. Chavez

The socialist republic of Venezuela also has a spurious territorial claim on half of neighbouring Guyana. The claim is based on its borders at the time of independence from Spain, a process known as uti possidetis juris. But UPJ only applies to those nations that have opted in to use it - the former Spanish colonies and cannot be used in any court or tribunal 'without consent.' So Guyana's claim is based on customary law only. Argentina makes similar claims in respect of the Falklands. For ICJ Judgments and legal Opinions on Uti Possidetis Juris use link:

But since times are so good - they can also borrow large amounts so they can give out even more free shit-

When times turn back to normal - they can't collect as much in taxes - so the borrow even more -

Then when the economy slumps - taxes dry up and not only will the lenders refuse to loan you more money - they want the money they already gave you back.

The dumbing down of Zero Hedge continues unabated, given the quality and the partisanship of the replies on this story. Please, please, please, see Venezuela as merely one piece in a 300 piece jigsaw puzzle. FFS learn to connect and join the dots, instead of arguing over Socialism vs Capitalism. It is infantile at best and outright negligent at worst. Is Maduro an arsehole and incompetent? Undoubtedly! But there are other forces at work here, which the dumbing down is missing. Come on guys, its the same 3 card trick at play here. Polictics-Finance-Media. Who is behind the concerted and most importantly coordinated Political pressure, U.S pushed and led financial sanctions by the usual suspects who have been systematically over the last 5 years destabilising the Bolivar and the media attacks on Venezuela? I challenge anyone to identify the top 20 Agitators against Venezuela, both inside and outside the country and see what demographic they are. Once you realise the demographic of the people castigating and pushing for increasing sanctions against Venezuela, it will all fall into place. Until then, stay off the fucking Kool Aid!

It's no secret that Venezuela has been a high priority target for CIA, Bush made public statements alluding to this many times.  The US is also attempting to normalize relations with Cuba which has been one of Venezuela's most important allies.  The suffering of Venezuela is most certainly a result of more than their socialist policies.  I don't prefer socialism myself but Venezuela has the right to it if that's what they want.  They have shit tons of oil and it is theirs to do with as they please.

There sure is a lot of conflict and upheaval where the last of the large oil stores are located.
