Guest Post: "Trump Terror" - The Donald & The Dollar

Tyler Durden's picture

[ZH: While we remain indifferent to the farce in Washington, we believe it is important to see both sides of the propagandized 'fight'... so below appears to be the best summary of how the mainstream protectorate would prefer we see the world under Trump.]

Authored by The Spotlight Group's Stephen Pop, originaly posted at TradingFloor.com,

The frontrunner in the race for the Republican Party presidential nomination is the businessman Donald Trump. Sadly, his rather vulgar comments with regard to Fox News host Megyn Kelly have dominated the headlines when it might be more useful to start focusing on his potential economic policy.

When they are placed under the spotlight of scrutiny, they lack any evidence that the businessman, who claims to have mastered The Art of the Deal [Random House Publishing © 1987 by D. Trump], actually understands even the elements of economics, let alone international trade.

Creating a buzz...Donald Trump's incendiary comments have dominated
headlines rather than his proposed economic policies. Photo: iStock

It is not enough to issue proclamations such as “it is time to get tough” or “It is time to make America great again”. These are the buzz words of a man that is reaching out to tap the rich vein of popular appeal.

Perhaps that is what all politicians strive to do, especially when the field of candidates is rather crowded. However, what is clear is that a well-crafted economic strategy is not present, nor are staffers that would have the temerity to disagree with Mr T.

Last week, when the People’s Bank of China moved to devalue the yuan, Trump was quick to appear on national television accusing the Chinese of having no respect for President Barack Obama. He claimed the No.2 economy had been treating the US like fools by using sweat shop and cheap labour and that it had used currency manipulation along with trade barriers and tariffs to restrict US exports to China while promoting Chinese trade into the US.

The Chinese are certainly protectionists, but a shift in the comparative advantage of manufacturing jobs was inevitable, so why not attack India?

Certainly the US had enjoyed its fair share of improvements in its level of absolute and comparative advantage as well as swings in the terms of trade. Manufacturing jobs in the US have actually been relatively steady in the level of payroll expansion since 1992 when Chinese GDP began to expand.

Trump on trade

Trump claims that it is all down to China that the US lost five million manufacturing jobs since 2000. That is too simplistic as it ignores the greatest US corporate trait – the ability to embrace creative destruction and reinvent its operating procedures.

The Trump message is playing to the basest of human instincts, which is to mistrust anything or anyone that is different. That political plot is unhelpful. America is better than such a message, which is designed to rouse the Tea Party fringe.

The most frightening situation is that he seems to believe that a great solution is the introduction of tariffs, as his policy programme is to look for levies of 25% on imports from China and 35% on Ford vehicles assembled in Mexico. That ignores the rules of the North American Free Trade Agreement and will do nothing to boost US exports. It will erode consumer welfare by raising prices for Americans and unleash tactical retaliatory moves.

Donald on the dollar

Another pillar in his economic architecture is a weaker USD to stem imports by naturally raising their prices and so stem imports by making them more expensive and increase the competitiveness of American exports. This does not allow for any consideration of the import and export elasticities or the great marginal propensity to import that has been in the US DNA since the 1960s.

If he were president the dollar might fall because of “Trump Terror” i.e. out of fright. The value is determined by the balance of demand and supply and that is driven by the interest policy of the Federal Reserve, an institution that Trump has been all too quick to attack. He opposed quantitative easing and yet we never hear about his alternative vision.

He is vocal on the issue of low interest rates in that they will unleash a disaster as new asset bubbles are created and ultimately burst amid a backdrop of high inflation. To date, that view has been proven wrong. Low interest rates have helped the US economic recovery and inflation is minimal and commodities and energy prices are falling.

The inflation rate in the US was recorded at 0.10% in June 2015 and averaged 3.32% from 1914 until 2015, reaching a record high of 23.70% in June 1920 and a record low of minus 15.80% in June 1921. These extremes have nothing to do with quantitative easing.

Muddled message

It is staggering that such a successful businessman can be so wrong on so many economic issues. He opposes any boost to the minimum wage and so ignores the multiplier effect of wages feeding consumer expenditure that in turns boosts corporate top and bottom lines.

He wants to cut all corporate taxes … keep them low by all means, but everyone and everything has to pay a share. Profits are made by using the infrastructure within society.

He clearly has a thing about Mexico. In addition to applying tariffs on Mexican imports he wants to build a great wall and deport 11.5 million illegals. I can agree with the latter point where individuals either claim benefits or work illegally. Why not legalise them? The Hispanic population in the US are the group that has the highest propensity to consume…so make them good and consuming citizens. As for the Trump Wall, the cost of construction, maintenance and policing is seen at $400 billion over 20 years.

Bad arithmetic

The plans do not add up or balance. He claims he wants to oversee an infrastructure programme, bolster defence and veterans' affairs, cut taxes and protect social security from any cuts and yet he says he is a fiscal conservative, a financial hawk.

It may sound fine in the early hustings. However, such a plane will not fly as reality teaches us that one cannot be on both sides of the street. The presidential race could do with a business thinker that is not enmeshed in the DC elite and cosy circle.

What was the name again…"Trump”. Oh…I thought it was “Chump”. Maybe Carly Fiorina would be a better business brain to warm up the political party.

Like I said the other day. A glitch in the matrix is where they, meaning the ones who run it, make a change.

It doesn't mean anything about fixing shit.

Might wanna find a new analogy, as your current one actually supports my view of Trump more than yours.

Every one of them is a Keynesian to some degree or another. My favorite part about trump, and every other candidates talking points on economics is how under their leadership, we will return to 4% growth. Haha no fucking way that is happening. Even their massively manipulated bullshit we see now can't even hit 3.

Anytime someone tells you they know how to get 4% growth when we are already leveraged to the hilt and in debt up to our eyeballs is either insanely stupid or knowingly lying. I don't want either of those in the White House.

DC doesn't have anything to do with determining growth

DC may determine whether or not conditions conducive to growth exist or not.

They could start with a return to rule of law and de-regulation and de-taxation-and in about 6-10 years you'd start to see real 4-6% growth-depending upon DC 's commitment to detaxation, deregulation and rule of law.

Absent a bunch from the states physically heading into DC and personally and physically making it happen-not too optimistic here

IMO any article on the national election diversion circus is a waste of time.
It does nothing but continue the meme that the paid off D.C. whores really give a damn about the rest of the nation. Their job is to provide p.r. to keep the sheeple calm as they are sheered and slaughtered.

There are no 'answers' to be had outta D.C. - but people are dumb enough to keep looking there.

If you really wanted to get TPTB worried, 90% of people would refuse to pay any attention at all to their (machine counted with no way to audit) national 'elections'.

He supports the Clinton's and is very close with both of them. Maybe it's all a conspiracy to get the Clinton's in/near the White House again. I mean he is polling double digits behind the democrats. Rand, on the other hand beats Clinton in multiple states won by Obama.

I have not heard anywhere that Trump wants to end the Fed. You cannot be pro fed and for a strong dollar. The fed has been very successful of destroying the dollar. It has lost over 96% of its value since the federal reserve act in 1913.

The Lame Stream Media really are in a purple panic about this, and above all, their inability to strangle free speech, as they have in the past.

For the benefit of the youngin's and the non-Americans, Trump is stronger than the polls show.  His two closest rivals, Carly and Carson, are really just "place holders", running for VP and/or favored by those who are so far undecided.  Neither has any natural base in the party, or serious chance of competing past the earliest primaries.  This could be over early.

I know the two parties both suck, but if Trump wins the Republican nomination, then the Democrats are garunteed to win the white house. Trump is viewed as unfavorable by nearly 60% of the voters. It will only get worse as he alienates more groups.  He is polling double digits behind Hillary. He won't get the independent/libertarian voters that are sick of wars. He won't get the voters that want their guns. He won't get the voters that are Hispanic. That are women. He won't get the voters that don't want to be spied on. He won't get the voters that like transparency. He won't get the voters that believe snowden is not a traitor. He won't get the prolife voters. Trump supporters are right, people don't like him. But its actual people that dislike Trump, not the media that gives him 24/7 coverage.

Understand economics?

How about ending the Fed? Rand is the only one who wants to audit (and end) the fed.

Our government borrows money, which the fed creates from thin air. Then we are stuck paying interest on that borrowed money, which was simply created on an account that had a zero balance, for generations and generations.

Ending the fed is the really the root solution to 99% of the problems.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Not sure about it's the same this time.  Trump is wealthy, but may not be controlled by the Oligarchs.   In the future if you start seeing him embrace globalist policies, like unlimited immigration, massive debt, or unrestricted trade. then he is.

Still with him there's a chance he isn't, whereas if we vote in  Jeb, Carly, Hillary or the like, we know 100% they are controlled and we get more globalism.

Even if Trump is controlled, he'll be more entertaining than anybody else, so really voting for him is unquestionably the best choice.

You've been here over 5 years. Have you learned anything about US politics in that time? Most politicians are uselful idiots and nothing else.

It's hard to believe people here are this naive on Trump. Even drilling down a half inch you'll see the man has no answers at all, and especially on US foreign policy where his views resemble those of Neocons John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

FFS. This place is turning into a madhouse.

Of course he dosn't have any ideas about those things, it isn't his job to know about things, his job is to get elected, the 'Advisors' have answers for any question, if he wants to know something an Advisor will write it on a slip of paper and give it to him, if an 'Advisor' wants him to make a speech they will put it on the teleprompter, it is the way things have been done for a long time!

Amen. I think I've voted in my last election and I've never been that big of a Trump fan but it's fun to see him ruffle feathers by bellowing sacrilege on so many issues that a majority of Americans are likely afraid to voice themselves.

It is staggering that such a successful businessman can be so wrong on so many economic issues. He opposes any boost to the minimum wage and so ignores the multiplier effect of wages feeding consumer expenditure that in turns boosts corporate top and bottom lines.

-Less staggering that a political hack could be so wrong on such a fundamental economic issue.

Probably written by a Democrat.

It is true Trump does not seem to have a clue about the monetary system nor the way the world economy works BUT...he tapped into the immigration issue which is high on voter's minds and which no other candidate dared touch....for this he is popular.

At this point I agree with Hillary!...what difference does it make. The government is so screwed up that unless it is turned arround completely we could elect anyone and the results would be the same...more of the same.

Trump will probably win simply becaause he is the only one who dares to speak the truth on even one issue. The dollar, the American economy, the reserve status of the dollar and the entire world economy based on it are all doomed. The Donald nor anyone else can change that. Maybe getting that one thing right will lead to other issues being corrected. At this point I don't care. I'm just trying to get a pillow over my head for when the jet we are on crashes. It might help.

"If he were president the dollar might fall because of “Trump Terror” i.e. out of fright. The value is determined by the balance of demand and supply and that is driven by the interest policy of the Federal Reserve, an institution that Trump has been all too quick to attack. He opposed quantitative easing and yet we never hear about his alternative vision."

- THE USD is the world Reserve Currency, and as Martin Armstrong says there is no other place in the world big enough to park money other than US Bond Markets.

- Plaza Accord is historical planned effort to devalue the US Dollar

- The FED, are you kidding?? They have had 6 years of LIRP/ZIRP to cause malinvestment and bubbles. Clearly the FED is in collusion with others or is incompetent to fix it's own system or re-embrace it's own rules and guidance. But since Banks are commingling funds with deposits, we are pretty sure collusion, racketeering, treason, and sedition are the causes

The fact that Donald Trump leads the Billionaires' Club in the category of "most bankruptcies" (as well as "loudest blowhard" and "worst hair-piece") is not a reason to elect him president -- unless you think like Simon Black.

...there’s one thing that really sets him apart, that, in my opinion, makes him the most qualified person for the job:

Donald Trump is an expert at declaring bankruptcy.

When the going gets tough, Trump stiffs his creditors. He’s done it four times!

Exactly what the US needs right now.

"The most frightening situation is that he seems to believe that a great solution is the introduction of tariffs, as his policy programme is to look for levies of 25% on imports from China and 35% on Ford vehicles assembled in Mexico. That ignores the rules of the North American Free Trade Agreement and will do nothing to boost US exports. It will erode consumer welfare by raising prices for Americans and unleash tactical retaliatory moves."

- Such a statement in this article about Donald Trump, ignores the previous statement about Creative Destruction
- Tariffs might lead to construction of manufacturing in the USA, and with new technology might produce as cheaply or at lower cost
- Imagine Chinese Robot Manufacturing in the USA
- Imagine Tesla's $400 Million in Subsidies actually gets help and starts to become profitable and at current market prices for light, small cars

It matters not which politician is elected or selected. It matters not which political party holds power. The system will not change, for the rich control the system.

It is not your system, nor is it my system. So, neither you nor I will reap its rewards.

All power structures must be decentralized in order for there to be progress. That means no more banks and no more monopolies. And, finally, government must become an open-source structure with no secrets.

Seattle raised their minimum wage and it was reported that around 1,000 restaurant jobs have been eliminated.  Raising prices will cut consumer expeditures on restaurants.

For each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Nothing occurs in a vacuum.

Trump wants to get people higher incomes, by way of stopping uncontrolled immigration, which is driving wages DOWN.  A forced higher minimum wage will just cause more automation, as an equal and opposite reaction. Automation will not create a multiplier effect of wages.
